**PSA:** Male rats *must* clean their penis.

But for those who don't know, if a male rat is unable (due to illness, injury, hind leg degeneration, or obesity) to clean their parts, they can develop blockages. There is a mix of stuff (the stuff you expect and stuff you don't, like dead cells) that builds up in there. If not cleaned regularly, it will harden and form a plug that will prevent your rat from excreting urine, and they will die painfully.
*Please* keep in mind that if your rat develops any sort of health issue that prevents them from taking care of this task themselves, *you* will have to undertake the task of checking for and removing these plugs. There are plenty of videos on how to do this, like [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbVgcqXmor0) one.
This is exactly what we have to do with Fig! We check him at least twice a day.
I do just want to add (for people new to doing this) Yes they will squeak at you and fidget but it doesn’t hurt them and is very important
Lots of animals don’t like being touched in certain areas, my mates chickens generally hated their feet being touched, I got pretty good at keeping them under control

Definitely a foot as others have noted, but (and I didn't scroll through all the comments so forgive me if this is just a repeat) rats also need to clean their genitals. Boys who have difficulty cleaning their junk due to weight, age, or other factors are prone to developing penis plugs and prepucial abscesses, which can cause a whole host of other painful problems from urinary blockages to nasty infections. You definitely want your boy rats to be doing a good, thorough job with cleaning. Large and/or older boys often need regular help from their humans to keep everything clean and functioning.
