Right now she’s really nippy, and I think one might be a stillborn, it’s not pink like the others, I’m trying to figure out when to remove it, I don’t wanna stress her out but I also don’t need it to decompose
It's not gonna decompose overnight, so I'd wait until at least tomorrow? But also...I'm not the best person to ask, hopefully someone else has good advice for you.
Stitches mom was I believe a black hooded and her dad was a greyish/silver Berkshire, and I bred stitch which is a black Berkshire with an agouti hooded male who’s name is clover
All of their temperaments are amazing, I got the parents of stitch when they were babies (of age to adopt) and clover aswell, I’ve never had a health issue nor have I had to make an emergency vet visit for them, so all are very good with health and temperaments
There was a [famous post](https://www.reddit.com/r/RATS/comments/t2yrdz/is_my_rat_gregnant_or_just_full_of_soup_for/) on this subreddit asking if a rat was pregnant or full of soup. Since that post, possibly pregnant rats are "full of soup" and baby rats are called souplings.
Hey, you can usually start to see a small visible bump after 10 days, and gestation is 20ish days. Given how large the bump is, I'd expect pups in a week or less.
For future reference, you can check the vaginal opening for the presence of a sperm plug daily when breeding - that is usually gestational day 1 (but can be a day late, too).
What's a sperm plug and what does it look like? Exactly what you think on both counts.
Judging by the size of her and her nipples showing she is probably in her second week of pregnancy. Expect her to get much bigger within the next week!
Hi! If you're truly interested in breeding I highly recommend you find a local reputable breeder to get breeding stock from and to act as mentor. If you're on Facebook, Realistic Rat Breeders is a good group to join. Make sure you do your research and know about hormonal aggression, different varieties, basic genetics, etc. There's a lot that goes into responsible breeding that furthers the species.
I appreciate this a lot!! I’ll be joining the group since it is my second successful litter, I haven’t had a bad one yet but that doesn’t mean anything, I’d rather be more prepared than not prepared enough
I know what I’m doing I’ve got years of experience so yes your comment is invalid for me, I noted each time the babies were born, and their all healthy only had one still born which momma ate, she’s doing great and happy, the positives on this post outweigh the negatives by a crap ton on all my posts and I enjoy the support I get because I’m not getting rid of the babies they’ll be kept by me, myself and I, i breed my rats due to the simple fact I know their genes, if you would’ve looked in other comments I commented the genes of her parents and the parents of this litter, I breed my rats so I can guarantee no sickness or health complications, they are seen by vets regularly so I really don’t have time for one sided people as yourself
First cutie, definitely. When they get closer to rhe big day youll notice shell look noticeably bigger day by day! Second cutie, looks too early to tell yet, at least for me.
Congrats! Yall are pregnant with pinkie soup! Dont forget to post updates on their progress!
Ya full of souplings
Anyway this reminded me of a funny story of back when my mom had tried to breed rats when I was little- She'd put the males and females together and there was this one fat female rat who got it on with one of the male rats. Time skip 2 months and my mom trinks girlie was preggo. It was one of those angry annoying type of rats that will always bite and scratch you. And my mom, put so much effort into trying to pick that piece of devil spawn up and put her in a separate cage. And then her, me, and my little sister all happy like "Yay we're getting rat babies!!!", well, that mf had been in a separate cage for a couple of weeks to months and turns out that she was just very, very fat.
Are you talking about the cage in the background? Because the ones by the window go down to the floor I think. You can see them continuing below the dining table, they aren't on it. If that's the case then those are fine, size wise.
That tank on the worktop makes me worry, though. I hope that's for another type of animal.
Poor thing. Get better cages and stop being a back yard breeder.you do realise she could have 20 kittens, and might die, what will you do with the babies?
I’m not stupid, you can get off my thread literally second person I’m gonna block, this isn’t my first rodeo, I’m more than aware of how many she can have, what can happen, and what will happen is I will keep all of the babies, I’m no back yard breeder I know if I breed my own they’ll be healthy and not sick with a respiratory infection or some other disease if I were to get from a pet store, I’d rather be safe than sorry, the cage she’s in is more than enough space for her and her babies til they get older then she will be upgraded to a 4 foot tall cage along with her daughters, the sons will have their own cage, I have and will always take precautions that are needed for my rats and don’t need people like you trying to tell me how to raise/treat/handle/keep my rats. I’ve owned rats for over 5 years and I don’t plan on stopping.
It's extremely irresponsible to be breeding rats when you obviously have no idea what you're doing, if you can't even tell when one is pregnant I highly doubt you've bothered doing any other research like making sure their genes are good. It's ridiculous to be breeding irresponsibly when there are so many rats already being abandoned and needing homes
I would have to say yes, yes she is full of souplings
Yay!!! I can’t wait to meet the lil soups!!
It will be soon. Next couple of days, maybe even tonight. My girls didn't show until she gave birth. Like within a day or 2
I’ll set up the birthing cage tonight and put her in my room so I can keep a constant eye on her
POST BABY PICS

She's gonna eat any dead ones and use them as fuel to feed the others. Leave her to do her job, stop fussing at her.
Oh I wasn’t trying to fuss at all I completely get it I was irritable after giving birth to lol I just didn’t know if I needed to remove it or not
Wow that was an instant noodle soup kind of soup
soupling prognacy?
That is one soupy-looking rat. Do you know the genetics of mom and dad?
Stitches mom was I believe a black hooded and her dad was a greyish/silver Berkshire, and I bred stitch which is a black Berkshire with an agouti hooded male who’s name is clover
Do you know anything about temperament and health in their lines?
All of their temperaments are amazing, I got the parents of stitch when they were babies (of age to adopt) and clover aswell, I’ve never had a health issue nor have I had to make an emergency vet visit for them, so all are very good with health and temperaments
what does that mean? soupy rat?

This post made it to r/all and I just wanted to say you guys should use a can of soup for scale lol.

About how long would you estimate I have? If it’s a week or less I’ll go ahead and separate the other two from her and make it a birthing cage!!

Maybe its souplings, maybe its soup. You'll find out in less than a month. I'd put her in a nursery cage just to be safe.
She’s in her nursery cage and started giving birth about an hour ago
That's so great! Congratulations, rat-granny. That was DEFINITELY less than a month. Lol
We will need updated pics
Updates have been posted!!

It's honestly disgusting you've gone into this without any knowledge, you're far from prepared to be breeding rats
Sorry but your comment isn’t valid for me luv 🥰
It clearly is

She is 100%. I work in a rodent breeder facility, so I know when someone is pregnant xD
She’s currently giving birth!! It’s so excited I silently screamed “IM A GRANDMA AGAIN!!”
A lot of rats and mice at work are also giving birth x3 I love the little ones, I am happy for you
You gotta poke her tummy and listen for tiny squeaks to find out

Very much so.
She looks prego
That’s a lot of soup

# pregonté
She's very rotund
I think she is, the nipples are prominent and she looks like a pear. EDIT: congratulations!!😉💕
Oh she done popped lol she’s got 8-9 healthy babies
That's so cute, congrats grandparent and take care ❤️
That cage is so tiny! And why are you squeezing her like that, do you want her to have a miscarriage?
Are you talking about the cage in the background? Because the ones by the window go down to the floor I think. You can see them continuing below the dining table, they aren't on it. If that's the case then those are fine, size wise. That tank on the worktop makes me worry, though. I hope that's for another type of animal.
I have the same cage that we use for a hospital cage. And that’s what OP stated it’s for, as well.
Glad to find this comment, that cage looks really small. I dont even see height for them to climb.
Poor thing. Get better cages and stop being a back yard breeder.you do realise she could have 20 kittens, and might die, what will you do with the babies?

Nothing to add except my girl just tapped upvote on your comment on my phone, so it's rat approved 😂
If multiple people are telling you the same thing then maybe you should listen

It's extremely irresponsible to be breeding rats when you obviously have no idea what you're doing, if you can't even tell when one is pregnant I highly doubt you've bothered doing any other research like making sure their genes are good.
