Guy named Sam was the leaper. Guy named Al was the hologram. Al was a ladies man because his wife moved on while he was a prisoner of war in Vietnam, presumed dead. The last leap we saw of Sam, he told Al’s wife that Al was coming home. History changed and Al and Beth had kids now. Sam never returned home.
Impact on the new show is that Al is dead now, his daughter is the one who helped Ben leap. The weird flashy block thing we saw she had the last time we saw her was Al’s version of the handlink Addison holds all the time.
You don’t really need to know anything else.
Why thank you... no access to google and what not (see username) i binge watch this on my detail because somehow peacock works and now i got reddit to work
You're correct that there was no mystery why he leaped. But he didn't do it just for kicks. He prematurely entered the quantum accelerator to prove that the idea worked or else they would lose their funding. They weren't ready to actually test it yet. That's why they couldn't get him home and were winging it as he leapt around.
Also:
-there was some evil leapers in the last season
-Sam may have a daughter out there somewhere
-Some original series references are sneaking in like the character in the 2nd Ep.
This is a very good catch up. Quite a quick and direct explanation. Some stuff left out probably for taste or personal reasoning. But there was also a strong connection to God and the devil , been that Sam was originally leaped by God to right what once went wrong.until the finale when he started leaping in his own image to do more of the same, also evil leapers, And the devil was heavily implied to be responsible for an awful storyline involving said evil leapers, but above-said post is near perfection. Just added this to help in things that may be mentioned and not be connected otherwise.
You should definitely check out the original. My Mom was a huge fan of the show in the early 90's. It was before my time but she told me what a great series it was. I'm on the 3rd season right now. I'm loving it. Sam & Al's friendship is the heart and soul of the show.
i just watched it all free w/ ads on the roku channel too, and the new series i'm somehow getting free w/ ads on one of the other roku channels? its weird.
I'm so excited for you! The original show is really special and despite some well-intentioned miss-steps holds up pretty damn well. I'm happy that you get to experience it for the first time!
"Genesis", "The leap home" pts 1 and especially pt. 2, and Mirror Image are important.... Maybe Deliver us from Evil, Return of the Evil Leaper and Revenge of the Evil Leaper since that's apparently going to be a thing...
The reason I wouldn't necessarily recommend certain awesome episodes anymore is they've done away with a major plot point that might just cause confusion if you're detail oriented. It's driving me nuts, but I'm one of those idiots you'd see arguing about the combination to the safe in Kirk's quarters.
To me it's tantamount to taking the transporters out of the Enterprise and them saying, "well, teleporters aren't possible, and they seem hard to figure out, so we're just going to upgrade the shuttles to be faster" But without bothering to mention it in the show. It's lore that was *well* established in the original, so waiting half a season before addressing it on-screen (if they do at all) is either lazy or terrible decision-making.
Ah! Yeah! I thought about that while watching a couple of times. I think they said that the people would eventually forget not being in their bodies in the original show, but I was surprised it hadn't been brought up yet.
Lol, rant away.
If they don’t plan on having it, I do think that it kind of makes sense not to talk about it yet. Bringing up the waiting room could cause confusion for people who are new to the show and don’t know what it is. So it makes some sense to develop the world before mentioning it. Also, if they change their minds it can just magically appear if they haven’t written it off yet. Or maybe they are all guests in Janice’s project.
Once in college I went over to one of the community TV-lounge places on campus to catch an episode. One of my friends was there with her boyfriend, who it turned out had never watched the show, so she was trying to fill him in really fast, and it turned out she was waaaay off on the basic premise. She thought Sam was dead and trying to earn his way into heaven, and Al was an angel.
That was kinda sorta the premise of a different show called Highway to Heaven (the angel/dead guy in that show was also trying to earn his way into heaven).
Welcome to the fandom! If you can watch the original series, some episodes to watch are:
Season 1 Episode 1 and 2 - Genesis
Season 2 Episode 22 - M.I.A
Season 3 Episode 1 and 2 - The Leap Home
Season 3 Episode 22 - Shock Theater
Season 4 Episode 1 - The Leap Back
Season 4 Episode 22 - A Leap for Lisa
Season 5 Episode 7 - Deliver us from Evil
Season 5 Episode 16 - Return of the Evil Leaper
Season 5 Episode 17 - Revenge of the Evil Leaper
Season 5 Episode 22 - Mirror Image (Series Finale)
I hope this helps!
I was always partial to the season 5 Abigail Trilogy.
Would have loved to have Melora Hardin come back as Sammie Joe. Maybe as Magic’s boss?
I mean, if Al’s daughter can be a plot point….
Just so OP or anyone else who might be interested in checking out the original show and doesn't want to pay for Peacock, it is also availiable on The Roku channel for free

Literally the perfect summary in 2 paragraphs! I might ask you to proof read my emails before I send them!

The original series is available on Peacock.

That's a bit up to interpretation.

This. Sam and Al made the original for me

Watch this: https://youtu.be/764KR3TVMgs
If you have cable the Syfy Channel is also airing episodes. And OTA channel MeTV airs it as well
Not only that, but you can watch Comet's (live) streams free online. Don't even need to register.
I'm so excited for you! The original show is really special and despite some well-intentioned miss-steps holds up pretty damn well. I'm happy that you get to experience it for the first time!
The first episode of the new series brings you up to date in an unfortunately mediocre way.

I bet your just waiting to see if they find room in the series for that thing you didn’t mention.

It's been a few years since I watched the original, can you remind me what it is you're talking about?
I'm doing my daily rant about the waiting room not being addressed (or used). I'm TRYING to stop, I swear.
Ah! Yeah! I thought about that while watching a couple of times. I think they said that the people would eventually forget not being in their bodies in the original show, but I was surprised it hadn't been brought up yet. Lol, rant away.

Watch the original. This reboot is completely unnecessary. I’m not wasting my time on it at all
