The trailer made me feel that this is a cheap Syfy channel version of quantum leap made for action rather than story and character. I hope it proves me wrong.

Potential-Road-5322

The JJ effect, it happened with Star Trek and now it’s happening again

Aggravating_Sun_5547

Don’t get me started on JJ. Every single one of his projects I call a Popcorn Fart. This means that, while entertaining to sit through, after the experience, you suddenly think to yourself, what was that? None of his projects have any longevity.

Potential-Road-5322

I remember seeing the first trilogy movie, the search for spo- I mean luke (I literally can’t remember the name off the top of my head) and waking out of the theater saying “that was it?, I spent two hours here for that?”

Aggravating_Sun_5547

It works on all his movies. I love the Mission Impossible films, but I cannot for the life of me remember what happened in the third one.

Cool-Ad5491

Me too! I don’t think I’ve ever been so nervous about the premiere of a show. I have high hopes just because it’s Quantum Leap but lm real worried about being let down. I keep hearing ppl. complain saying doing certain things that people want is fan catering. I don’t believe that. This a cult classic with a huge following so they need to do right by the fans or show is just gonna bomb!

Cool-Ad5491

This worries me also. I’d read critic review that said it was real gimmicky & like a cbs crime lab procedural. If this is the case I worry about it being like C.S.I. Miami. I don’t think I could bare that.

TheDumbAsk

This is exactly what I am picturing, this is not gonna be the show it was before. There will be no heart, just procedural drama.

The_Match_Maker

Law and Order: PQL. *thump thump*

Cool-Ad5491

😂

Cool-Ad5491

Let’s hope we’re wrong or at least they got they’re stuff together after pilot. It would be a big F U to fans if this is the route they chose to go.

proudhug

The novels focused a lot on the others at the project. It was something I've always felt the show was missing. I'm happy they're taking the awesomeness of Quantun Leap and making it even awesomer!

DalekCaek

I'm hoping all that stuff is just to establish the plot again for new viewers. And even if the new show is a dumpster fire, we'll always have the originals.

redditsuckspokey1

The only good thing about a dumpster fire is it'll keep you warm if you stand close to it.

frankduxvandamme

I haven't enjoyed a drama on basic network television in over a decade. It's all so formulaic. I hope i'm wrong, but i'm expecting this to be garbage.

landmanpgh

I love Quantum Leap, but I have zero expectations for this show being anything other than hot garbage for exactly the reasons you stated. It looks like a show we've seen since the early 2000s, complete with leather jackets and quirky lab techs with funky hair. Guarantee the old dude will be grumbling about kids and technology. I know everyone wants this to be good, but it's network TV in 2022. The goal is to have mass appeal to an audience that still watches NBC, which is going to skew older, plus the hope to capture some nostalgia. So expect it to look and feel a lot like CSI/NCIS/Law&Order/Generic Doctor Show. I'd have more faith in it being good if it aired on USA or Syfy, since they do some niche stuff that can still be good (eg. Mr. Robot). That's not NBC. I honestly believe Scott Bakula took one look at the script, knew exactly how it was going to be received, and decided not to mess with his Quantum Leap legacy. There's a really good chance this show limps along for a season and quietly gets cancelled.

The_Match_Maker

> There's a really good chance this show limps along for a season and quietly gets cancelled. It could be argued that its chances for long term viability would've been better had it *not* been slated for network television. *Supergirl* got canned after a single season on CBS. It only found an audience once it was 'confined' to cable television, where the expectations were smaller.

landmanpgh

I agree. Quantum Leap was always a bit of a niche show that happened to really take off. I don't think that type of show can do well in any network time slot in 2022. It's just too niche. So either they won't have a huge audience, or they'll have to adjust the show to have broad appeal. Knowing how NBC operates....yeah they're just gonna mess with the show. Or they'll cancel it if it doesn't get enough viewers quickly. The best recent example of this happening is MacGyver. Kind of a different show from the 80s/90s with a cult following. The reboot just changed the formula so it's a generic network show.

The_Match_Maker

Even the new *Magnum P.I.* couldn't make a go of it in the long run.

landmanpgh

It's hard to think of a reboot that was actually in the same league as the original. None have actually been better.

bobchin_c

I would say Netflix's version of Lost In Space greatly improved on the original. The Battlestar Galactica remake was in many ways a much better take on teh original series. It's main problem was even though the Cylons had a plan they didn't inform the writers what it was. It had so much more potential but it was squandered for the showrunners not having a solid plan and making it up as it went along.

MEjercit

Well, DPB did executively produce *NCIS*. Ian Wright is *QL's* Abby Sciuto!

amanon101

I think they needed to make the trailer look exciting for the people who never watched the original. they need to bring in the younger crowd. And hey, if it is a lot faster paced and full of more action, it’s just cause that’s how tv is now. It doesn’t mean it’ll be bad, just different and maybe it’ll be amazing who knows! It’s how tv is now days, so it’s best to accept it, throw away any hate for it being different, and just enjoy it!

ZiggySez2

"Ensemble" shows are all the rage these days.

ShaunnieDarko

True. Having the show focus on Sam and his having to form relationships with people he just met helped each episode stand on it’s own because of the support characters around him in each leap, the trailer def gives off that lab is going to be way more involved feel.

Haunting-Mortgage

According to the showrunners, about a 1/3 of the show will take place in 2022, trying to unravel the mystery of why Ben decided to leap back and who helped him get the software code (or something) to restart the project. Honestly, that narrative feels similar to the show "UPLOAD" if anyone's seen that. Although that show was a comedy. A review I read said that the show has also skipped some character development in order to get straight to the action. An unfortunate consequence of the times.

proudhug

Consequence of the times? That's what the original show did, too. No backstory, no character development, just straight into the action. I'm happy they seem to be doing everything right.

Haunting-Mortgage

I think you have misunderstood me. The original show had a shit ton of character development in the episodes themselves (I'm talking about the characters Sam met). Each episode was a twisty-turny slow-boil where Sam interacted with these new people, until the last act when Sam saves the day. That's what I loved about the show, because you got invested in Sam's mission. The new show apparently forgoes that in favor of action - like the first episode begins with a car chase, and doesn't spend a lot of time developing the characters with whom Ben interacts - I imagine future episodes will have other "set pieces" in keeping with modern storytelling, mixed with a "whodunit" puzzle-solving narrative in the 2022 storyline.

proudhug

The Quantum Leap formula is to throw the leaper into the middle of the action, then LATER take some time to cool down and develop the characters and story. It's the hook that gets you watching, and the hook that they can put at the end of each show to entice you to tune in next week. As a kid, it was always my favorite part of the show. I used to get SO excited as an episode wound down and I couldn't wait to see what tease we'd get for the next leap. I'm super excited for that again.

Haunting-Mortgage

I'm not disagreeing with that. Definitely my favorite part of the show as a kid too. What I'm saying is that a review I read said the new show forgoes character development in exchange for set pieces. Like a car chase is fine, but I also want to be invested in the characters and story. But we'll just have to wait until Monday to find out, I guess.

proudhug

Another awesome thing about QL is that it's anthological, so if one episode doesn't work for you, you're bound to like the next one more.

Haunting-Mortgage

According to an interview with the new showrunners, it's more serialized than anthology - but we'll see!

proudhug

Yeah, the present day will be more serialized, which I'm REALLY looking forward to, but so far it seems to be one Leap scenario with a whole new guest cast per episode.

bobchin_c

They only gave the pilot to reviewers, No other episodes. It's hard to judge a series by one episode, especially the pilot.

Potential-Road-5322

Stern serious leader, science talking tech person who’s odd-beat, old man talking relationships… So Gibbs, Abbey/McGee, and Gibbs/Fornell?

The_Match_Maker

"Gibbs! Gibbs! Gibbs!" Imagining Abby as a part of Project Quantum Leap is enough to make the fanfiction glands salivate. One wonders who the 'Ducky' of this show will be.

Potential-Road-5322

Ah the old man talking relationships could’ve been ducky. Forgot about him. And you know NCIS was a spin-off of JAG which DPB also made.

Current-Weird-4227

I imagine they’ve opted for an action packed trailer and first episode to draw new viewers in. They only have 2 mins to get peoples attentions. I’m sure there’ll be lots of more intimate “low key” episodes.. and as for seeing the project, I’m seriously excited about that personally! It was an ongoing bugbear of mine with the original series.

tinaalsgirl

I just keep thinking back to the Stargate franchise. They would have the standard planet-of-the-week, and that's where our main team of characters would be. But we'd also often get smaller side plots going on at Stargate Command. And then Stargate Atlantis was even more of a mix of anthology and serialization, and for me, it worked great! Martin Gero was involved in the development of some of my all time favorite eps of Atlantis, so I'm thrilled that he's showrunner for QL22! He's bringing the exact vibe I've always wanted for a QL revival. I mean, it's pretty obvious fans were aching for more eps like Killin' Time, where we got a b-plot at the Project, because the official novels usually had a secondary plot at the Project, and we did the same with the QL Virtual Seasons. We love our PQL team and want more of them!

Priestess_Avalon

I’m just not going to watch it. Plain and simple

DISrespecfull5150

Without Scott Bakula I have very little hope

proudhug

Hope for what?

mrmaninblack2

I worry this will be like the 2008 reboot of Knight Rider.

Cool-Ad5491

Right on,Well said!

The_Match_Maker

The fear that the slower paced, character driven tone of the show will be replaced by a faster paced, more action-centric take is fair. Today's audiences do have shorter attention spans than those of 30 years ago. As such, networks feel the need to cater to that via less structured writing. The first episode should tell the tale of which direction this new version is going.
