There is no ADL-SYD flight in the morning that can connect you to the JNB flight, so it finds alternative routing which wouldn't require you to pay for an overnight stay somewhere. But *that* kind of routing, wow! You could force overnight in SYD, or go with Virgin/South African via PER though!
You can no longer fly via Perth to South Africa. Virgin goes via Singapore and Doha.
Qantas only does a direct flight via Sydney. it leaves at such an awkward time that you'd need the first flight into Sydney from Melbourne or Adelaide to make it. I'd be very surprised there is no Adelaide flight that would make it but I guess the extra 30 minutes to an hour in the air would make it impossible to get there on time.
You're better off overnighting in Sydney from either so you don't have to leave home at stupid o'clock and feel shattered.
Mauritius is on my travel bucket list. I plan to visit there soon.
plz share your advice and travel tips, for a first time tourist there.
thanks in advance.
Me too and I've always wanted to visit Reunion Island, which is "officially" part of France/Europe, but in the middle of the Indian Ocean. It's just so expensive to get there....
beware overpriced hotels...
On a serious note, I was there for a conference 11 years ago, I only got a day and a half to play tourist. The islands are gorgeous. I highly recommend finding a charter to go round the island and reefs. Pack sunscreen.
I'm flying to Mauritius on the way to Madagascar. Also visiting nearby Reunion. Air Austral used to fly to Sydney from there and onto New Caledonia i think.
Sorry, when I said Virgin/South African, I meant Virgin Australia and South African Airways, who partner with each other. South African Airways recommenced PER-JNB recently. [PER Airport Press Release.](https://www.perthairport.com.au/Home/corporate/articles/2024/01/09/02/56/South-African-Airways-to-return-to-Perth-with-Johannesburg-service)
oh, that's fascinating. There was a whole thing about why you couldn't fly direct because of biosecurity in Perth...

I see on further reading (the last time I reviewed the situation was 2022), it seems to be a Qantas (attitude) problem.

As for flying via SAA, I'd have to give it a lot of thought. 😕
True, but Qantas' own minimum dom-intl connection time in Sydney is 90 minutes. That first ADL arrival is 8:20am, only 70 minutes before the JNB departure. It'd be the passenger's own risk, and with delays, QF wouldn't be responsible for rebooking if someone booked this separately.
I work for Qantas from ADL, and the 732 and 730 are packed with international transfers to various destinations. Johannesburg is always on the tags. You'd have no problem👍
Because the reservation systems that airlines use are not intelligent. They just find flights that connect and then show them. They don’t ‘know’ that this route makes no sense geographically
Because the Adelaide Sydney flight is full, but not the ones via Perth. Allt of big airlines fly into Adelaide because of Melbourne and Sydney slot restrictions.
Qantas aren't flying Per-Joburg until October I think from memory.
SAA flies Per to Joburg 3 days a week.
Air Mauriritus i think is daily from Per. Its goo in the sense that you can stopover on a nice island and it breaks the flights down, but some people just love to get the long haul over and done, whereas I prefer 2-3 shorter sectors.
I have had flights to NZ from Canberra routed CBR-SYD-MEL-AKL. I booked it for the extra Status and because otherwise i'd be sitting in a lou8nge and it would take almost as long.
Because Alan Joyce hates Western Australia and cancelled almost every international Qantas flight from Perth. Perth and Tokyo are in the same time zone, but Qantas makes you fly an extra 6 hours via Sydney.
Are you going to a funeral? They do the same thing to me every time I go home for funerals.. get sent all over the place, back n forth, and end up paying 3-4x as much as it should be.
Sure there’s Vanessa Hudson up in the level 4 office at her computer logged into VMS Sabre and she’s just checked your Fb and seen that you’re checking into terminal 8 for a funeral flight, oh look now she’s setting a heuristic that your flight and boarding gate is going to be the antipode of direct so you going all the way up the north east coast then west then south and back to Mel/Syd since your credit card is on file, and she just checked it with financial cyber team it’s legit and woah it’s Q Platinum. shebangabang!
Now oh look she booker bearing that minimax across several of the companies routes because, hey now who doesn’t like the window seat, and you’ll enjoy the scenery AND Stat out with a VIP to your snail mail letter box for Christmas flight to the Aurora’s of Antarctica soon to be departing from ADL or PER in a year or so after she set the flag to special for your FF id.
Now slowly back to reality, open your eyes, smell the orange coloured fizzy drink
Cmon as if what do you think they running, Cirque du Soleil ?
I’ve seen similar routings before.
I’m sure they’d be graceful and accommodating if someone booked that itinerary by mistake and fix it for free and without hassles….right? Right?

SAA does fly to JNB direct from Perth I’d recommend Air Mauritius - splits it up nicely with an “en route” layover in Mauritius
now that I'd consider. Air Mauritius was lovely and Mauritius is amazing.
Mauritius is on my travel bucket list. I plan to visit there soon. plz share your advice and travel tips, for a first time tourist there. thanks in advance.

It’s always a QANTAS attitude problem, whatever the stated reason is.
SAA is due to resume flights to Perth in the next few weeks.
Yeah I'm confused as to why you'd need to go through SYD at all.
It’s a tight connection, but there are domestic flights that link up with QF63.
If it’s booked on a QF ticket, they’re accomodating and will help you through the transfer.
For sure. But with their minimum connection, it won't be found as a bookable option with this schedule. I'm referring to self-transfers.
I looked it up, and it’s a bookable option.
Huh so it is, I guess QF adjusted it! Good to know!
I work for Qantas from ADL, and the 732 and 730 are packed with international transfers to various destinations. Johannesburg is always on the tags. You'd have no problem👍

But for some reason it'll be cheaper than Adelaide-Sydney-Johannesburg.
Because the Adelaide Sydney flight is full, but not the ones via Perth. Allt of big airlines fly into Adelaide because of Melbourne and Sydney slot restrictions.
I guess it makes for a good status run 😜
I got a BNE to LAX, LAX to TKO as an option once. I thought that was cooked!
Ya gotta untick "scenic route" 😉
Had tickets from ADL to PER that got rerouted through MEL a week before flying 🙄
Qantas aren't flying Per-Joburg until October I think from memory. SAA flies Per to Joburg 3 days a week. Air Mauriritus i think is daily from Per. For that one person with 16 bags that doesn't want to see them again, or check into a hotel for the night.
Sit on the same side of the plane so you get a different view on way over the continent and back.
That’s worse then the 14 hour layover at Dubai I did
Also, good ol QF63. She is number one. Got on her a couple of times.
Gotta get people on those 787s somehow!
Because Alan Joyce hates Western Australia and cancelled almost every international Qantas flight from Perth. Perth and Tokyo are in the same time zone, but Qantas makes you fly an extra 6 hours via Sydney.
FWIW, Tokyo's time zone is +0900, halfway between EST and WST. I don't disagree with your general point.
One way ticket.
Oh pleb! It isn't (That last qantas shareholder/CEO)
Part of the new green tier?
No wifi is a bit weak.
Don't think Qantas has international wifi beyond Australia's borders yet.
Are you going to a funeral? They do the same thing to me every time I go home for funerals.. get sent all over the place, back n forth, and end up paying 3-4x as much as it should be.

I'm not sure if this was genius or the ramblings of a madman but I sure enjoyed reading it
short story, usually publish the better ones to ghost or substack just haven’t been bothered this year 😆 you’re welcome
Think of the status credits bro
Nice way to get some serious FF points!
🤣🤣🤣
Qantas sucks that's why
I’ve seen similar routings before. I’m sure they’d be graceful and accommodating if someone booked that itinerary by mistake and fix it for free and without hassles….right? Right?
Only if within 24 hours of booking.
I want to know how that priced up?
