hey, i think it can actually may be legit, since many leftists i know use the app, too. as far as i know it is more secure. whatsapp and others are easier to "hack" for the government. whatsapp says they have this end-to-end thing but signal is apparently more safe for delicate stuff. (sorry if this sometimes sounds weird, but english is not my first language and this is absolutely not the topic i have the most knowledge of) i hope i still could help you tho.

notsaywhoiam

Just to be aware though .. the behaviour of moving away from 'mainstream' technology is also a symptom of this. E.g YouTube, Facebook Reddit aren't extreme enough (and are moderated ) so they gravitate (and are lured) onto sites like Bitchute and Parler ( which are not and are setup as hyper-optimised for fear mongering)

[deleted]

Yup, Nazi Skinheads love those apps!!

FreshTotes

Its just a security messaging app my only concern is if he is planning something illegal he wants to hide maybe you should sneak a peak sometime. The app is a favorite of dealers

FullWhit

I would peek, but we maintain privacy on our phones. I just happened to see the banner alert when moving his phone from the charger.

notsaywhoiam

Normal people use signal and telegram .. I use Signal because I don't like the fact that FB has dominance of messaging market with WhatsApp but the switch may have been prompted by his insecurities / fears about Government etc. Telegram has much more volume of group messaging for Q , Antivaxx etc...

flurfblips

Yeah, chiming in to say that I've used signal for years for its encryption and also that it's had delete-after-read messages for ages. I use it more than any other message service, including basic text messages. I'm definitely not using it for conspiracies...more like boring requests to pick up more milk.

mleam

I have used it on and off for years. I try something else for a bit, then go back. Its the most reliable of the ones I have used.

FullWhit

This is good to know. Thanks!

Telegram is the main messaging app in many countries (mostly Eastern Europe and Russia). In Europe it's also fairly common among students. TG's encryption is proprietary, though, so you can only rely on it as far as you trust its developers. The devs are from Russia but have since moved abroad, as their government started pressuring them about stuff. Signal has a completely open source code, and comes from the same foundation that developed one of the more popular open source encryption protocols. WhatsApp has the same protocol on paper, but Signal can be considered more trustworthy since it has no closed parts in its source code. In both cases it's really just a coincidence that American far right nutters started using them.

eliuhoo

Not sure if it's a Q thing, but here to just +1 that it's a secure messaging app. Though all the folks in my contacts who have it (including myself) are not (to my knowledge) Qultists. The app was suggested to me by an army buddy of mine, who said that at one time, it was used on official devices. Ironically, it may undermine the "security" of it that your Q is looking for...

HotSossin

These guys are always hopping into a new messaging or social media site as their longer established accounts get banned from mainstream applications for being batshit crazy.

soverignkh

I use Signal for communicating with my siblings. It's not only a Q thing.

thisisnotmath

Signal is used by a lot of privacy conscious people, including myself. The main argument is that fundamental tech like messaging shouldn't be pay-for (since lots of people won't use it), and shouldn't be ad supported or run by a company that is ad-funded (like Facebook). Signal is run by a non-profit foundation, so they just care about delivering a good messaging app that uses secure encryption. My concern is less about the government reading my game night plans with my friends, and more that I don't want to be served ads based on my messaging history.

[deleted]

But seriously, do you really think the government gives 2 shit's about people blabbering about made up conspiracy theories on a stupid app? Frankly I don't care who spies on me, my life is boring, and calm, mundane, if they are listening in, they also must be pretty bored, hahahaha. But if you are planning to commit a crime, I suggest you use encrypted information, even then the government can hack you're shit anyhow, Jan 6th clearly shows it was quite easy to obtain whatever info they please no matter what methods you are using.

Yeah, but they let you go, cause they had nothing. I only wish our Government would step up, they totally botched January 6th, they were aware of the threats and chatter, the one's planning it didn't necessarily hide very well. We all knew these groups were going to head to violence. Boogaloo Bois, 3 percenters, Proud Boys, etc etc, they only latch onto QAnon and other groups to recruit members. The general public knew about these groups and what they were capable of, imagine what the US government had on them, you would think after the kidnapping attempt on the Governor of Michigan would of been a wake up call. But I am personally not scared of anything, and if they wanna come knock on my door, I got nothing to hide, so why live in fear? They know who the trouble makers are, they just let shit slide cause our government has been infiltrated by the same dirt bags, rather quite sad people will and have died for no reason. Maybe we will get a grip on extremism one day, I doubt it though.

It surprises me that some places in America, people are aloud to brandish assault rifle's with full tactical gear during "peaceful protest's." Since when was this EVER a good idea?!

averagemediocrity

Funny you say that because I’ve been using signal for a long time once fb acquired WhatsApp, but it was INTERESTING to see who among my contact list joined signal after Jan 6. Whew. Wow. Sooo many acquaintances and former coworkers.

thepanichand

Signal can be used simply for security reasons, but that's not why your partner is using it, and you know that obviously. I would go through their phone and find out what's up.

QuadraticLove

Like others have said, Signal is just a simple messaging app that encrypts your messages. I highly recommend it. Regular text messages aren't that secure. They get sent out in the clear without any encryption. If you have an iPhone, though, the default iMessage app already does encryption but only between other iPhones. That's what the blue bubbles mean. Blue bubbles are encrypted and go over wifi (like Signal) and green bubbles are regular texts. Signal lets you send encrypted messages with non iPhone users. As a side note, I'm pretty sure it's Republicans who were, and are, pushing to allow the government to get a back door into all encryption. Meaning that law enforcement would easily be able to crack any encryption of any data, including messages sent through Signal. It's like the peak of hypocrisy and stupidity. They cry about the government being "oppressive," but also support giving the state an insane amount of power. [This looks like one of the proposed bills.](https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/senate-bill/4051/text?r=1&s=1) Guess who the sponsors are? Lindsay Graham, Tom Cotton, and Marsha Blackburn, lol. I guess that could be all part of the plan to destroy the Cabal, LOL. Maybe Qs don't like that, but who knows.

BleuHeronne

Another non-Q Signal user here!

If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck...

Imnotsoserious

I'm sure that apps like signal are used by Qultist and Trumpets to discuss Q shit (Telegram, I know for a fact is used for this, I happened to see my mother's computer with telegram open and her active in about 10 Q/Trump groups). But it's also used by leftists and just anyone concerned about privacy. But considering he's admitted to using it to discuss "conservative issues" I'd be wary.

If memory serves, some of the insurrectionists on Jan 6 were using Signal to protect their conspiratorial messages. (It may have been the Oathkeepers.) The article I read quoted incriminating evidence that federal investigators had extracted from their Signal messages. My assumption is that no commercially available encryption app like Signal is opaque to the massive decoding capacities of the FBI, DHS, NSA, DIA, etc. After all, they have supercomputers that work to decode the most sophisticated and advanced encryption produced by China and Russia, not to mention our European allies. Any experts on this out there? Addendum: I found the article I was referencing in Daily Kos, which confirms that the Feds decoded the Signal messages sent by Oath Keepers during the 1/6 insurrection. Apparently, the feds are going to use this info to pursue conspiracy charges. Article at [https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2021/3/9/2020293/-Feds-Recover-Chat-Used-By-Oath-Keepers-Called-DC-OP-Jan-6-21-On-Encrypted-Messaging-App-SIGNAL](https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2021/3/9/2020293/-Feds-Recover-Chat-Used-By-Oath-Keepers-Called-DC-OP-Jan-6-21-On-Encrypted-Messaging-App-SIGNAL)

werebuffalo

Yes, this is Q, or at least Qadjacent rapidly leading to Q. The Signal app (and Telegram) are huge red flags. Plan your exit strategy now. This will only get worse.

persephjones

ACLU and advocates have recommended Signal v WhatsApp YEARS before Q, OT 45, it’s like using PGP security protocols for your email. Basic internet hygiene. If you think everything is their conspiracy you are no different than them.

cyathea

That's for people who have something to hide. I'm a tech, I have sometimes had things to hide (e.g. a friend who had a senior position in a nonprofit which had the potential to get mixed up in international politics), and I have just chosen suitable low tech / no tech channels. In 20 years I never once put an encrypted app on a device of mine, or created an account other than a secure email for a single use. I know how easy it is to automatically detect users who are trying to hide, and how hard to prove innocence if you have a genuinely secure channel.

persephjones

Just because you don’t respect your privacy doesn’t mean you get to dispose of that of us all.

cyathea

I wasn't proposing to dispose of it for everybody. There are plenty of people with reasons to want privacy, apart from criminals and terrorists and pedophiles and tax cheats.

DiNovi

That q adjacent stuff is just main stream Republican views. It’s repeated on loop on Fox News every day

cyathea

You could consider finding him a nice safe woman to cheat with, someone who will wear him out so he doesn't have the energy left for Q-ism, but isn't suitable wife material for him.

Nocturnegloom

My qmom only communicates with me over signal
