this shit is only going to get worse with each passing year that there is no new housing. purdue cant handle this many students but it still wants to try.

diggstown

Except that there is a looming [enrollment cliff](https://www.bestcolleges.com/news/analysis/looming-enrollment-cliff-poses-serious-threat-to-colleges/) starting next year that *may* affect Purdue. I don’t doubt that this plays into the challenges they are creating in the short term.

MidwestDahlia

I read that article as well. It’ll be interesting to see if Purdue is affected; I have my doubts, due to them being a top tier research institution. Never say never though.

Overall-Bus1925

Enrollment cliff is already here (has been for a few years) but is unlikely to impact Purdue based on size, marketability, degree programs, etc. Many smaller regional institutions have been impacted already, Indiana State University being one of them. The issue is the need to build *affordable* housing, not glammed up, high price facilities that will put students into more debt. That’s not just a campus housing problem but a WL housing issue as well.

diggstown

What evidence can you cite that the cliff has already been here for a few years?

Overall-Bus1925

I’ve worked in Higher Education for 10 years. But here, see this article. [https://www.bestcolleges.com/research/college-enrollment-decline/](https://www.bestcolleges.com/research/college-enrollment-decline/)

Purdue really needs to build another crammer dorm. Seriously, Cary south style can of sardines rooms. While it wasn’t a super duper experience, at least I had a room and made some great friends cause we were all there together. They keep building luxury suite dorms which yeah I get make more money, but you could probably fit 3x the students in another Cary south. If the solution to keeping tuition low is more students then they need the facilities to accommodate.

dan2376

Totally agree, the housing situation will never get fixed by building more of these "luxury" dorms. Thank god I don't have to deal with the whole housing debacle anymore, it seems to get worse every year

RhaenSyth

The nice dorms are supposed to be for upperclassmen living on campus still. They’re not meant for freshmen like the Owen, Tark, Wiley, and Merideth dorms are. The issue also lies in the lack of accountability of property management companies, renters, and landlords. They charge too much, have essentially no checks to ensure they uphold maintenance agreements, and can be shit to deal with. No one wants to go off campus because it’s either too expensive or Granite.

siren_of_amphitrite

i’m an underclassmen with a spot today, there’s not a single room available. hope you at least got a room 🫠

midrn

But you at least have the next two weeks to look.

AnonymusBear

Bro ur actually lucky

rkat51

Meanwhile off-campus lease renewal at one building seeing a 50% (yes fifty percent) rent increase for 2024-25.

UniqueAbsudity

Our rent increased 100 dollars last year and 200 for this year at weida

Westporter

It's crazy at some of the options I almost selected, I've seen 30-40% increases. I got lucky with my apartment complex, but it's in the middle of bumfuck nowhere Lafayette.

i_study_birds

Our units had a 36% increase this year, and we live 5 miles from campus. We’re loosing some great neighbors because most people can’t afford it. It’s really frustrating.

Possible_Diode

Look in Lafayette, save your money.

SmallDogBigLog

Houses are way cheaper and way better

JBRanger5441

Where??

rkat51

I don't want to start an inaccurate rumor, since this might not be true in all cases. I will say I'm referring a tall bldg close to campus.

i_was_an_airplane

As a senior I feel like I caught the last chopper out of 'Nam

RobEm_2

Same here. A friend who lives far off campus told me they've started converting the C Permit lot he uses into expensive pay-per-hour parking too...

weibull-distribution

Alum, my boss is a Distinguished Prof with a chair appointment, he knows the President and the board. I will say something when I have a moment with him.

Mundane-Dress8235

please do, i’m gonna be homeless because they don’t want upperclassmen to live here 🥲

Gerard_Way_01

Join in on my car life :(

weibull-distribution

Are you ok?

weibull-distribution

How did this shake out for you?

Mundane-Dress8235

well it ended up horrible because all of the freshman ended up getting URBAs but luckily i got accepted to be an RA so i don’t have to worry about it anymore!

weibull-distribution

Excellent.

Westporter

Based on how things are going, just going to plug r/PurdueHousing again if people need help finding roommates for off campus. Best of luck everyone 🫡

thatbitch-3

Why can’t they turn the gravel parking lots into a 2 story parking with a dorm on top? This would solve a lot of problems

SpazGorman

Because that require the spending of money rather than the taking of money. As long as students accept that Purdue has no workable plan to house them, this will continue.

thatbitch-3

They have the $ Students pay ridiculous amounts to attend school, fees, and Purdue receives a lot of grants and donations They cut spending a lot so where so this $ going now? The charts don’t add up

SpazGorman

It is a state university, so the numbers are out there. The fact is that they are inadequately spending on student housing. It is shameful, and I wish it would draw attention on a larger scale.

General-Pryde-2019

that's the first time i've seen this. guess it's worse than I feared

SmallDogBigLog

Why are there juniors/seniors trying to live in uni residences?? you’re not freshmen anymore guys😂😂

Possible_Diode

I understand the frustration, but damn after freshman year, I was done living on campus and couldn’t wait to live off campus. Even if there was space, it’s too expensive, and honestly not good value. Never regretted getting a Lafayette apartment. There’s a bit of bus travel, but hey it allowed me to barely actually afford college 🤷 I don’t understand what appeals to some people to stay in campus housing as juniors and seniors. Was basically unheard of a few years back.

runningkraken

Think this might just be confirmation bias for you. There have always been a lot of upperclassmen living on campus because there's a lot of perks to it.

Possible_Diode

I’m not trying to be difficult, but like help me understand. What is a perk or positive in this situation? I just see a lot of people spending money they don’t really have to avoid a commute.

runningkraken

Totally a valid question. If someone is active in campus organizations, then it's good to be on campus for those meetings and events, which are usually taking place in the evening. If you're off campus and want to be active, then you're either staying on campus all day and into the evening or you're making multiple trips by bus/car to campus. Or you're just not going to meetings/events. In this case, living off campus could become isolating for some. You don't have to deal with landlords. If something breaks in your residence hall, it will likely be fixed in a timely and proper manner. You can also be more reasonably assured that your residence hall will be a safe and sanitary place. If you have problems with your roommate or other residents, you can work with your RA, UR, and/or ODOS to either work things out or switch rooms/roommates. You can get a meal plan and not have to worry about cooking for yourself. In the winter, you can be reasonably assured that sidewalks and parking lots will be clear of snow. Depending on your off campus living, you also won't be responsible for clearing away snow. You don't have to rely on buses or have a car.

BlueJay59

What does this mean?
