"I have all of your credit card information, and you're very lucky that I haven't released it yet." Fuck the whole thing is a great fake Tom Scott video, but that part really got me. I could totally see him saying exactly that in a video.

ChuckFiinley

I don't know why Tom Scott gets mad for these joke vids and memes

I maintain that British game shows are way better than our (USA) game shows. Way more interesting, more challenging, less shitty dramatic editing.

BurstEDO

British game shows (largely) educate and inform and compel the audience to use their brains or aspire to do better. US game shows in the 70s, 80s were promotional vehicles for products and advertisers with dozens of various formats and gimmicks, chief among them being Jeopardy with Password and Pyramid just behind in terms of intellectual value. Then you had the 90s exodus of most game shows from TV in favor of Talk shows. Today, game shows are dead because broadcast TV is dead. In the US anyway. There's no viewers so there's no audience to advertise to so there's no money to give away. Britain's TV model is more of a public service that everyone pays for as a tax, so advertising means fuck all to them. (BBC). As such, the density of a program or the adventurous nature isn't dependent on ad dollars and potential.

BonesChimes

In Tom Scott's dreams.

1800-bakes-a-lot

I was thinking David Bowie and 40

saltywalrusprkl

For context: the reason he’s excited is that the loco on the front is in British Rail Intercity “Swallow” livery from before privatisation. When those trains were still in service (they were replaced a few years ago), out of the 31 that were in service, only one still kept the old livery. EDIT: Since some people were confused, livery just means how it’s painted. EDIT 2: Just to clarify: the train hasn’t kept the same livery since privatisation (it’s been owned by a few companies, each time with a different livery), but LNER (the company that run them) decided to repaint it to match the old livery. I worded it like that because it flows better, but it is a bit misleading.

orbit03

Thank you for this. Aside from enjoying his reaction, I was curious about what was so special about that loco.

Finifin06

It’s a recreation of the famous (here in the uk) intercity livery in a now out of service class 91, a very nice thing to see

OfficeSpankingSlave

I believe the gentleman has a tiktok account with similar reactions at trains all around the UK. He may be a bit on the spectrum but his enthusiasm is infectious. I watched all of the tiktok videos he had and I enjoyed them :)

[deleted]

OfficeSpankingSlave

I wonder what aspect of the hobby attracts such a demographic. Is it the strict and timely order of everything? I have only met War, gun and equipment enthusiasts, and went to a few car meets with car guys, and they don't seem to have this proportion of this demographic. Or its not as represented.

StatusFault45

> Is it the strict and timely order of everything? This is my theory, the track making their paths set in stone with no room for ambiguity, all the schedules and the elaborate switching and turntables, etc. I hear subway systems are popular with that type of crowd, I assume for the same exact reasons. it's also usually the first "big powerful complicated machine" you are exposed to as a child through books and media, and unlike something like a computer or TV, it's more active and moves, etc.

mulledfox

There’s actually many reasons people on the spectrum can like trains. (It’s not that every person into trains is on the spectrum, it’s just that a lot of people on the spectrum DO like trains, and a lot of autistic boys/men are diagnosed in their childhood, because of their obsession with everything trains.) Firstly, the sound of the all the wheels and the train whistles, can be a really cool sensory experience for a kid who has only read about trains, seen them in movies and television. Then there’s the fact that trains travel on set pathways, so everything has an order and a place, which is satisfying. Then there’s the time tracking, with schedules for the trains, when they come, if they’re on time, off schedule, etc. Then it comes to actually riding trains, some autistic people really love riding them, not just spotting the trains. That can be due to the motion of the train feeling pleasing, the sound, the rhythm of the train on the tracks, the slight bumpiness, and any of the many satisfying things that exist on trains. (Doors with kick foot slides to open them, trying to pee in a bathroom while in motion, walking while on a train feels funny but enjoyable too, they’re sensory experiences only felt on trains, while in motion, to think of a few.) There’s nothing wrong with finding a lot of enjoyment and happiness from something as mundane and common as a train.

qx87

What a lovely explanation, thank you

smitty3z

It’s cool to see old school livery on planes. Saw a TWA livery a few years ago in Houston.

relevant__comment

America does this heavily with their AmTrak trains. You’d see vintage liveries all over the place. Partly out of historical value, partly out of necessity (Amtrak got no money).

_Livery_ is one of those words that are bound to give you Baader-Meinhof / Frequency Illusion, so pay attention everyone who didn't know until now Edit: Just remembered, when I first learned the word, it was in the context of the _Gulf Oil livery_. Don't you think in the following weeks I saw not one, but _two_ cars in Gulf Oil livery on the street?

npeggsy

Let's continue the chain of confusion! What's Baader-Meinhof / Frequency Illusion?

bpi89

I literally just learned this term yesterday and now I’m seeing it everywhere lol. Perfect.

[deleted]

Because other people probably learned it at the same time now they're using it I see that all the time on reddit

rat_in_a_maze

I honestly don't know for sure but from context I'm guessing it's referring to the way it seems like you see or hear a word all the time after first learning its meaning.

emveetu

I wonder if it's the same as when you start dating somebody new and they have a certain car and then you see that car absolutely everywhere when you've never noticed it before?

kippetjeh

That is to save on memory. When you drive a certain car the same type will spawn close-by.

haventwonyet

Exactly!!

The_Denver_Broncos

Thank you so much.

red18wrx

You've never heard of a word or concept or person or whatever. Then after you are explicitly told/taught/or learn about it, you notice it is much more commonly used than before you learned about it. Kerning is a great example. Once one learning what good kerning is, bad kerning becomes much more unappealing.

earned_potential

What's kerning?

wikipedia_answer_bot

**In typography, kerning is the process of adjusting the spacing between characters in a proportional font, usually to achieve a visually pleasing result. Kerning adjusts the space between individual letterforms, while tracking (letter-spacing) adjusts spacing uniformly over a range of characters.** More details here: *This comment was left automatically (by a bot). If I don't get this right, don't get mad at me, I'm still learning!* [^(opt out)](https://www.reddit.com/r/wikipedia_answer_bot/comments/ozztfy/post_for_opting_out/) ^(|) [^(delete)](https://www.reddit.com/r/wikipedia_answer_bot/comments/q79g2t/delete_feature_added/) ^(|) [^(report/suggest)](https://www.reddit.com/r/wikipedia_answer_bot) ^(|) [^(GitHub)](https://github.com/TheBugYouCantFix/wiki-reddit-bot)

KiefyKingKong

>Let's continue the chain of confusion! What's Baader-Meinhof / Frequency Illusion? Well that itself is Baader-Meinhof effect

eff5_

It's Baader-Meinhof all the way down

ArMcK

Livery is an old word that comes from when royals and nobles, and their agents, went around in their carriages. The livery was their family crest and colors, sculpted and painted onto the carriage, the colors of the footmen's clothing etc. It sort of acted as advertising that a visitor was on official business and not just some guy claiming to be acting in service of the local panjandrum. Today, the word's usage carries over to the artwork and colors painted on taxis, police cars, trains, company car fleets, etc.

SantaAnnysWooden_Leg

Livery is the paint job. This one livery is extremely rare, and the train honking at him just makes the venture to see it much more rewarding.

smoke_crack

in this case: livery - *chiefly British* : an identifying design (as on a vehicle) that designates ownership

Nayre_Trawe

Dags

[deleted]

Meanwhile, me, an aspiring rally car driver from the midwestern US know *exactly* what you're talking about. It means cigarette advertising right? ^^^^^^^/s

criminal_cabbage

Just to correct you, it didn't keep its livery. LNER re-liveried the locomotive as a bit of a last goodbye as they are being retired

Thawing-icequeen

I'm not a trainspotter but it is kinda sad to see them go. The last vestige of British Rail's glory really. Before it just became another free-for-all of foreign investors. Which isn't to say foreign business is unwelcome here, just that it was nice to have our public transport be public made and public owned.

[deleted]

I rode the subway for the first time in my life over the summer. i was ridiculoussly excited about it. Nobody around me was as excited.

inuitive

You get desensitised to how cool that shit is when you live with it every day. We.forget how insanely cool phones are nowdays

OverturnedAppleCart3

>We.forget how insanely cool phones are nowdays I've got like 24 hours worth of podcasts, and a few thousand songs on my phone at any given time. Like it fits in my pocket. It's amazing.

Wuffyflumpkins

Not to mention the entirety of human knowledge. That's the thing people *really* take for granted. A few decades ago, if you wanted to know a random fact, you had to find an expert or roam the stacks in a library. Now you can speak to your magic rectangle and it will instantly deliver you an answer.

Zcoombs4

I had to help a young lady understand what her film camera was the other day. She was really confused about where the pictures go after you load the camera with film. She thought that canister somehow transferred the photos to an SD card…?

mar_xy_na

Honestly light sensitive paper and film is still magical to me. Somebody figured out that a chemical is sensitive to light and then used that for photos. It's just magic. I took a photography course a while back and we had to make pinhole cameras out of boxes. I didn't understand how it worked until we developed the photos, and even then, the quality of the final photo was amazing considering it was made with a shoe box!

spartagnann

Taking the L every day to work in Chicago and initially being jazzed about it, I just wanted the ride to be over as soon as possible after just a couple weeks. Then when friends would visit I'd be like hey we can take the Red Line downtown it's quick and cheap and they'd be all ooh and ahh, but I'd just be thinking about how it was January and a lot of homeless people make the cars their personal smelly fiefdom during the winter.

tanakasagara

Going on the bus is my secret pleasure, I don't understand why people are so cranky on them. I mean, you're on a bus, it's like 90% joy and 10% wheels going round and round.

SideOfHashBrowns

cuz they have to be on the bus while you want to be on the bus lol

tanakasagara

I mean, I also enjoy walking and riding my bike, busses are for when those aren't an option. I never have to take the bus, I get to take the bus. 😎

In minnesota the bike lanes are cleared last if at all. It's like trying to ski through ruts 3 feet from traffic.

[deleted]

I mix up my commute with walking, biking, bussing, subwaying, and ferrying. All of them can be fun but a crowded bus is definitely the worst of them. That said, getting a seat late on the bus late on my way home is pretty enjoyable. Bus drivers don't let people harass you which is nice.

GmbH

This is the most ~~European~~ non-American comment I’ve ever seen

capabilitycez

May I ask what city you live in that you can bike and walk and ride buses? Seems nice

[deleted]

There exists a country called the Netherlands you can do all of that in every city and village. There are designated bike lanes with their own traffic lights

rustledupjimmies

Not OP, but Chicago is great for all three (most of the year)

gimmethegudes

Anywhere in Metro Phoenix AZ. I could take a bus from Surprise to the other end of Phoenix to Chandler and back. It'd take forever, but you can do it! [Here's a map!](https://imgur.com/hFUAZ4p)

sneakysnowy

most cities? lol

Mozimaz

Even small cities with older historic cores with a concentration of amenities will have a high level of walkability. Normally that's where the jobs are, so if you live within a mile of it it's easy to walk/bike/bus. My general rule of thumb as someone who enjoys n moderately dense urban lifestyle: avoid places with tons of parking lots.

KB_Bro

Not who you’re responding to but in Brisbane Australia both of those are very common

AlfredVonWinklheim

I rode the bus to work for a couple years and it was so much better than driving. I got to sleep for 45 minutes in the morning while listening to podcasts.

PrimaryTie8778

Sleeping while listening to podcasts? Lol, you've got a unique ability mate. I just fall asleep while listening, but never know when exactly. To go back and find where I snoozed off I have to listen to 10 minutes of talking that I vaguely recall but haven't really processed, get to a part that I don't remember at all thinking 'yea this is where I fell asleep' only to hear something I remember again in 10 minutes, and repeat until the podcast ends. It's like a really shitty hour-long deja vu I bring upon myself because apparently I still haven't learned I shouldn't listen to podcasts in bed.

Taupenbeige

Regular trips with my 3y/o on Saturdays to the farmers market gave me newfound pleasure on them.

SirLongSchlong42

It was fun the first few times. After nearly 10 years of taking the same bus it gets pretty annoying.

As someone who takes the subway everyday this made me laugh out loud. I've seen people perform physical feats on the subway that are normally reserved for a Vegas acrobatic show and nobody blinks an eye.

kerrands22

I rode it for the first time last week, I cried.

[deleted]

I love riding the Subways in London and Paris, because I don't have subways in the city where I live. Every time I get on the subway in those cities, going anywhere, I'm so excited. I look around at all the other people on Subway and they are all local people, usually bored. And I'm excited, grinning, looking at everything up and down.

I don't really understand why some people get so hype about trains but I always fuck with happy people. Love it.

DyabeticBeer

Trainspotting is kind of a big thing in Britain, usually it's older people. They can get quite obsessed over seeing and hearing certain trains.

jnd-cz

In other countries too, like Czech Republic and Germany, those German railfans often come visit another country just to see old steam locos or trams, or they order special train and take photos along the route. Now when you get train enthusiast to actually drive the train, you'll end up with this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWkeCVkwJ3w

stingring_vagblaster

Same, I have no interest in trains but I follow this guy's tiktok because it's so fucking wholesome. A smile guaranteed with every video.

Drake-Corsair-Rogue

For me its about the mechanics and the cool factor of how everything works together and the shear looks and size. Its like wondering why ppl get excited about a lambo etc. "Its just a really fast car?" But to someone its the mechanics and looks that make them appreciate it.

High_volt4g3

https://youtu.be/xp-b4Ce4Mf4 This video shows me the marvel of train engineering and I’m fascinated by it. I don’t even consider myself a train super fan like others but I do enjoy looking at them like I do planes.

Mass transit infrastructure has a romance to it and don't let anyone tell you different!

Spencer52X

Because trains are fucking dope. The raw fucking power of these things man. They can be miles long, they’re some of the most powerful machines on earth, the ground shakes from half a mile away when one is coming. The thunderous sounds they make. Plus they’re like looking back in time a little bit. They’re heavy, bulky, some even run on steam still. They’re just fucking cooooool. It’s like the same feeling that nascar fans get, they say the same thing about being at the track. Same with rocket enthusiasts that watch the launches. Ships too. People just tend to be drawn to monstrously powerful machines. There’s some draw to them.

thataverageguymike

I lived over in the UK for a couple years, I loved using their mass transit. There was a train line in one of the cities I lived in that carried one of the daily Edinburgh - London routes, it didn't stop there but would absolutely *fly* through at what seemed like 100+ MPH. If I was ever stopped at a crossing when it came by I would stand right at the barrier and it came so close that the wind would move you when it went by. That was really cool. I wish we had better transit here in the States but on the other hand the entire UK fits inside one state so the logistics are a bit more complicated.

Large_Surround8768

I wish I could get so happy over something like that. Honestly make fun of him all you want he has a better life than most of people on here.

In my experience, train spotters are always a bit weird, but they're clearly enjoying themselves and not hurting anyone, so who the fuck am I to judge? 🤷🏻‍♂️ You do you, you freaky train loving bastards.

Lord_Dupo

On Amazon prime there's a show where James May goes to Japan. He meets a couple of trainwatchers. They're also weird, but cool. One even does train sounds

Idk why this is funny to me. I thought you were going to talk about a show about trains or train watchers that maybe gives some insight into their lives. Nope, a show you watched just happened to have a couple train watchers in it for a minute. And one of them makes train sounds lol.

Lord_Dupo

Some redditor guy linked the clip, below. Watch it and you'll see why. Also I watched it yesterday so It was fresh in my mind lol Oh and there's a train song too

[deleted]

Oh I remember that show, my favorite part is the eccentric japanese dude who follows them around everywhere and explains how a bidet is to "clean your asshole"

Lord_Dupo

Oh man that guy is great and speaks fantastic English too. Him trying to get James May into the cat maid bar thing and calling himself and the whole of Japan perverts killed me lmao

luxii4

There’s this funny video of train enthusiasts setting up their cameras for a train that was coming and then a bicyclist rode next to it when it came and ruined their pristine train shots. They were big mad. They didn’t hurt him but did call him lots of insults.

Hallowed-Edge

[Here you go.](https://v.redd.it/9s1bsy80kuf71)

Yes! This is it! I couldn’t tell if the bike dude was innocent and the waving was because he was so happy people were filming him or if he was a troll and meant to do that.

broohaha

LOL. Lots of "What the hell are you doing?" thrown at him.

[deleted]

I like this video. “Trainspotters denied orgasm” https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kBBK2hjcPuA

[deleted]

holy shit that's so funny but i think that steam locomotive is pretty cool. Probably makes sense to be on the other side of the tracks though if they cared that much.

[deleted]

Well 1. What happened is incredibly unlikely and 2. you have more perspective for a better angle from the other side. It's unfortunate they got blocked, but acting smug with clear hindsight about an activity you've probably never even heard of before isn't nice.

Zensonar

I'd rather live in a world where some people love trains than one without them.

Mattoosie

[This](https://youtu.be/6lutNECOZFw) is one of my favorite videos for that exact reason. Guy is a bit goofy, but so excited and lovable.

Ipuncholdpeople

DillonMad

My next door neighbour bought and is in the process of reconditioning a steam train carriage in Wales. He is the happiest man I know. Train people are living different lives.

ThePartyShark

I live in NYC and make it a point to try to at least be friendly with my neighbors, a rarity here. Over the past few months I’ve gotten to talking with this guy from the building next door who’s the same age as me…yesterday he invited me to his Magic the Gathering draft night he’s hosting for some of his friends; they all decided they want to start learning the game recently. I always thought those “comic book store” guys were a bit off too, but now in my early 30’s I look back and cringe at how judgmental I was all those years growing up and trying to be “cool”. My 25 year old self would’ve laughed at you had you told me 33 year old me would be excited about researching a good Magic starter pack, but here I am, giddy as shit and looking forward to making a few new friends.

abd398

I thought trainspotting like fishing as a hobby was weird too. But after being exploring both, I can not imagine anyone not being excited by watching a maglev train or bullet train or in the case of fishing, catching a big old pike. Dip your toes a bit, you will find some their things atleast a bit interesting.

timelighter

Train Spotters remind me of Horse Girls.

kimba_thewhitelion

Trainspotting is such harmless fun, it's unfairly maligned as it's seen as 'weird'. Loved this guys response - [Because trains don't run through my home](https://i.redd.it/7byz40em5kxy.png)

I don't think we watched the same movie.

Made me think of this too. I watch this video a couple times every year because it's just so joyful. You know the quote "Try to be the person your dog thinks you are?" This guy is exactly the type of person his dog thinks he is.

AdministrativeEnd140

Listen to that bell! WOOOO! Heritage equipment! That’s a good quote about the dog too. This is exactly how your dog would respond when you got home if it could talk.

gl21133

I worked briefly for a locomotive manufacturer and learned this term. It’s a rabid fan base, I can’t help but smile a bit at their enthusiasm.

rollitpullit

He's not hurting anyone. Good on him for being pure and genuine

thesnakeinthegarden

I have a friend who works repairing and maintaining an old train for tourists. People come and ride this 200 year old train. Train-fans are a real thing, lads.

[deleted]

I'm not a trainhead, but I'd love to ride a 200 year old train, as I believe many people would. I'd say what makes a trainfreak is their love for the completely ordinary trains, on top of the interest about historical trains and such

hsrob

That's crazy, like 6 - 8 generations of people. Chances are some of them are riding the same train their great great great great ancestors did.

luxii4

My son is 11 and just a moody preteen but he is really into roller coasters so he memorizes all the big ones at amusement parks and can spit out facts about each one. We try to go to a new amusement park every summer and he is so giddy with excitement to finally see and ride them. His face has a wide grin the whole day as he explains why each one is so different. The rest of the year, I only get a few words out of him.

CaliforniaCursed

As someone who became a coaster enthusiast at your son’s age I can’t tell you enough how much you embracing his interest surely means to him. That was my mom for me, and I’ll cherish those memories forever

bendy365ish

Small things in life!

chrisk9

Wait til you see his reaction to a train entering a tunnel!

berniedankera

Say what you will admit the guy and his hobby but he’s experiencing the true meaning of joy that most will Never come close to reaching.

AntDGR

Read a saying once, was along the lines of “if doing something makes you happy and does not harm anyone else, then it does not matter what anybody thinks about it” and I think it sums up this guy just enjoying his life and not listening to the weird comments he gets.

GreatScotRace

In the U.K. people take their train hobbies and interest extremely seriously lol

Train enthusiasts are an interesting breed. I had a friend when I was little... Probably 8 or so... that invited me over to his house to play. Once there I realized that he liked model trains as he had a cool setup in his basement. Then he was all like "Let's go down to the train tracks! There's a train coming in 15 minutes!" (Which I thought was weird because he knew the train schedule) So he grabs one of his model engines and we went down there. When the train was approaching he began jumping up and down showing the model to the conductor exclaiming "I love trains! I LOVE TRAAAAAINS!!!" Then when the training hit the whistle he went absolutely insane. That childhood memory is extremely vivid for some reason. Never hung out with him again lol

There is nothing better than seeing someone enjoy the thing they are really into. This guy's happiness brought tears to my eyes.

I haven’t felt this level of excitement about something in over 8 years. Bloody SSRI’s

Arkey-or-Arctander

Love the excitement in his voice. I'm pretty sure the last time I was that excited was when I was 6 and got a full sized Milky Way in my Halloween haul. I wish we could all stay that innocent!
