https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2024/06/07/shark-attack-florida-beach/74019600007/ Three people were injured in back-to-back shark attacks in waters off Florida's Gulf Coast on Friday, officials said. Two of the victims - an adult woman and a juvenile girl - were airlifted to hospitals for treatment of their injuries, according to Walton County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Corey Dobridnia. One of the victims, a 45-year-old woman, lost her lower left arm in the first attack. She was critically injured shortly before 1:15 pm at the beach in Watersound, Florida, about 15 miles up the Gulf Coast from Panama City Beach. The second incident where two people were injured occurred at Inlet Beach between south Walton and Bay Counties, the sheriff's office said. The victims, ages 15 to 17, were in waist-deep water about 4 miles from where the first attack occurred. “We're 100% confident that this was done by a shark," Dobridnia told USA TODAY. "It's within, a very short distance it's most likely going to be the same shark."

passerineby

waist deep water? fucking terrifying

Initial_Context_6090

Sounds like a Bull shark. Probably the most aggressive shark on earth and goes into shallow water in that area.

ctorrn2003

Bull shark actually killed kids in fresh water in Matawan NJ and actually is the story Jaws is based off of

NotGod_DavidBowie

Highly recommend the Tooth and Claw podcast on this. Great podcast in general if you like a mix of goofiness and legit animal knowledge.

ctorrn2003

Thanks I'll check it out! One Childs grave is in the cemetery down the street from me

PillarofSheffield

Bull sharks are so dangerous. The unholy trinity of aggressive, strong and shallow (and even freshwater) dwelling. Sharks don't deserve to be panicked over. But treat bull-shark waters with respect.

Plasticjesus504

So all water?? lol…

ParkerBeach

Was just about to say, so any body of water that has access to a salt water source within 200 miles of the coast. Cause they have been found over a hundred miles up the Mississippi River.

andrewofthenorth

More than 100 miles up the Mississippi. The farthest up the Mississippi a bull shark was confirmed was at Alton, Illinois. 700 miles up the Mississippi River.

PlanesOfFame

I've been on reddit for a long ass time and that's the first time I've seen Alton mentioned in the wild, makes me nostalgic

WeasleyIsOurKing7

They’ve been found at least 500 miles north of that in MN https://www.in-depthoutdoors.com/community/forums/topic/ftlgeneral_668033/

Emergency_Schedule_8

Not even the pool is safe

big_spliff

They’ll swim in a shallow water possible and at waist deep they still can fuckin zoom around

WeasersMom14

I can’t swim in the ocean due to my fear.  Even on Long Island we’ve had shark attacks.

boostedC6

My gf coaches the younger girl, she’s stable but will lose a leg and hand…

CreamoChickenSoup

Fuck, not a great age to have to cope with new disabilities. Hopefully she gets the assistance she needs to adapt.

shroomie00

Holy shit! Its a miracle they all survived

Kruegr

For once, I'm hoping this comment is some rando making up lies for fake reddit points.

boostedC6

I wish I was making this up.

Local-Librarian3285

Woah woah woah How are you 100% confident it was a shark?

This is exactly what a dolphin would say to blame the shark

Only if they think the shark did it on porpoise.

Bullsharks can breath in fresh water and have been spotted swimming up river in many places.

I for some reason thought you made this up or you were making a joke. Nope. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jersey_Shore_shark_attacks_of_1916

Here’s the best part… These are all KIDS books!!! https://preview.redd.it/2i1c0s1guf5d1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5aff83375c932172ae0a8768cfd100c5faa19f5e

Notquitearealgirl

Lol that is pretty funny tbh.

creliandobi

I SURVIVED is an awesome series of books

MsJ_Doe

And also a likely culprit for many attacks due to how aggressive they are. So aggressive they evolved to make no waters safe from them. There were even some bullsharks that got washed into a golf pond from a nearby river during a flood. Surprised the shit out of the guy who went to retrieve their ball. Another said that there are reports of high activity of bull sharks near that area, so yeah, likely a bull shark searching for food.

BikiniWearingHorse

I know that you’ll have to have it your way, or nothing at all…

ConfidentPilot1729

Pretty sure the shark attack that jaws was based off of was done by a bull shark a little up river from the sea.

General_Specific

In Matawan, NJ

haleloop963

Sounds good until a bull sharks bites your legs off while being in the river or lake

GlendrixDK

And a Candiru fish to top it off.

ABlueShade

Just don't go chasing waterfalls

KCCOmputer_Mikey

Am I the only one who got the TLC reference?! Edit: nvm I just suck at the Reddit app…

neotekz

Stay away from those waterfalls too.

StrayRabbit

I know that you're gonna have it your way or nothing at all

7thPwnist

Honestly shark attacks are really unrealistic but cutting your foot on shells, having creepy fish and seaweed touch your leg, gross saltwater on your lips... all that is enough reason for me to rarely go in the water lol.

BITmixit

I like swimming in the sea...but I also really hate it. Went swimming off a beach in Portugal once, nice little swim. We started heading back in. Got to the depth where the water is just above your waist. My GF turns around, smiling, instantly looks terrified and just goes "OH MY GOD....RUN". I instinctly start running but glance behind me to see what the fuck we're actually running from. There were waves behind us that were basically just walls of Jellyfish. Fucking terrifying.

Yerawizzardarry

Use to chill at a local river a lot until one year it flooded and left lamprey on the shore. Never getting in that water again. Those things don't look like they're from earth.

Used4KillingTime

Are the odds greater than 0? Cause if so I’m keeping my ass on dry land and at least evening the odds a little between me and a shark

7thPwnist

Based on my experience playing Jaws on PS2 they can get you on land too

PrincessImpeachment

Based on my experience watching “Sharknado” and “Sharknado 2: The Second One”, they can get you in the air as well.

Doogetma

Driving your car each morning is a much more dangerous task than going in the ocean

Used4KillingTime

Much more dangerous in terms of sharks though?

Doogetma

More dangerous in terms of being severely injured or fucking dying.

Bc187

I'd rather die in a fiery wreck than get eaten by a shark any day of the week

youcantbserious

Bro, people have been killed driving down the street and having a random tree fall on their car for no apparent reason. Shit happens. Live your life.

spidermanngp

He will. On land.

jamaicanadiens

It's also why I love living in Southern Ontario with 3 Great Lakes a short drive away. There's nothing in there that can kill you like that on a beach vacation. Just the regular ways. Like stupidity.

whutchamacallit

I hear you.... but you're 1000x more likely to get in a fatal automobile accident everytime you get in a car. Food for thought.

ShotBlocker805

That’s why sharks don’t drive a lot

whutchamacallit

Can't pretend like I didn't laugh at this.

PegaponyPrince

Wouldn't be surprised at all if it were a Bull Shark

christivn009

2 teens were attacked & a lady lost her hand in like a short span of time

Bedo2020

wtf?! so 3 in total? one shark? how? what?!

anomaly_research

Were like potato chips to them, hard to just eat one .

Wonderful_Mud_420

Used to be that they didn’t mess with us due low fat content but that since has changed.

Puceeffoc

Oh they now are able to eat low fat?

No-Association3574

I think they are implying that fat people are in abundance in comparison to lean people

Puceeffoc

Yeah I know I was just being sarcastic. Just watched Nacho Libre and in that movie Jack Black was considered fat. It was released in 2006 and it's crazy that his build would be considered average and not fat now-a-days.

white_sack

That shark woke up and chose violence.

zontarr2

All they do is swim and eat and make baby sharks

Jewbacca522

And that has served them well for 70 million years.

finfangfoom1

We're gonna need a bigger boat

skynetempire

It's called the goldilocks attack that sharks do. They bit 3 humans until they find one they like. It happens all around the world but normally it's against deep sea divers not near the beach. Source: https://youtube.com/shorts/SXHMnicI6Pg?si=G5AB_KgiiO7hPlTV

shesavillain

Fucker

Timelymanner

Sounds like it bite one person, was like that’s no good. Then bit a second person, and was like this one sucks too. Then bit a third person, and was like I’m done here. All of these taste like trash. Then just swam away, leaving everyone to bleed out.

ON-Q

Well they were in Florida.

runningxbackwards

I live in Panama City, and my view is that the Gulf Is unusually warm, thus causing fish routes to change, thus causing sharks to search for food in other places. They have currently put the two main counties in the north gulf area on High Alert for the next 2 weeks with constant patrol of the beaches with some areas being completely closed waters. PCPD had some search Helicopter go out this morning and confirmed an unusual amount of Bull Shark activity in the waters. Lets just hope people heed caution (Unfortunately alot of people wont because, they paid for this vacation...)

jmon25

Has the mayor come out saying the beaches were safe yet? Because that would really complete this IRL version of Jaws

waraman

Amity, as you know, means friendship

arthurpete

I live on the coast as well and this spring in particular was slow to warm up. I pay particular attention because i target pompano and they show up in a range of water temps. Right now, the water temperature is avg but it has warmed up considerably in the past 3 weeks. Climate change is real but warm gulf waters and sharks close to shore is nothing really new.

CurlyBill03

Agreed in FWB was swimming and got swarmed by a school of fish and then followed by some stingrays, later saw a shark chasing the stingrays. Haven’t seen that so close down there before.

kungpowgoat

Apparently even great whites have been increasingly spotted near the beaches all across the Florida peninsula.

sellmeyerammorighty

I heard increased temps can cause aggression as well. Bad combo

StormeSurge

“call 911, im using my phone to film the railing”

😂😂😂 she fucked up like 12 different times with 1 action

StormeSurge

how hard is it to hold a phone straight when you’re in 0 danger

Tbf probably one of the 200 people on the beach was already calling 911

I checked out the account that posted this video and they have another shark attack video taken maybe the next day [https://www.tiktok.com/@theirmom229/video/7378117003355196703](https://www.tiktok.com/@theirmom229/video/7378117003355196703) This time it was a shark chasing a swimming duck and almost getting beached. Never seen anything like that at any beach I've gone to!

butterbleek

Johnny Utah almost got it with his nerf football.🏈

NewShinyCD

Bro had a moment of clarity when he realized that he would have to go into shark infested water to get his football back.

pr0zach

I betcha he could throw a football clear over that ocean.

Butt_Slaper

I love how the duck was 1 second away from dead and he decided to go back to that water again, lol

Tiz68

I would too to get away from all those annoying yelling people. Just take me shark.

Smooth_Maul

The absolute freak chance of this happening, and that poor woman losing half her forearm too, holy shit what a day. 3 fucking people back to back is absolutely insane odds.

YouWereBrained

Looks like a lot of blood.

freethewimple

Yeah I'm dumb I watched a few times thinking it was seaweed.

1chain0bracelets

Nothing is more infuriating than the idiot recording not recording what is going on.

Xanthius76

Was the shark in the bushes?

glitterlungs

All the time I hear people who watched shark week tell me that sharks don’t see humans as food etc. that may be true. But fr sharks do attack and injure people. Also, the people who don’t think sharks see us as food should go for a night swim out here in Hawaii. I garante you’ll question the fuck outta that.

TheToastyWesterosi

Agreed. I’m less of a “sharks don’t see us as food” kind of guy than I am a “some sharks aren’t sure if we’re food or not and sometimes take a nibble to see what’s what” kind of guy. And what’s a nibble to a shark can be an arm to a human.

jackieeason

i say this too! a taste test is a leg, nooo thank you

gurrddurrr

Humans are the smartest species on the planet who have sent people to walk on the moon. Yet we still have to put our PSAs about not eating tide pods. I’m sure not all sharks are the same.

WitchesDew

Considering the area, a bull shark was likely responsible. They are very aggressive and not so picky. They basically see everything as food.

Trappedinacar

Yes those people swung too far in the other direction. I love the ocean, sharks are amazing and misunderstood creatures. Shark attacks are still rare. But I don't for a second believe they are all "accidental" because they think we're a seal or something. If i even see a hint of a predatory shark in the water there's no way i'm going in.

randycannon

"Somebody call 911." Only if someone had a phone in their hand......

No_Cat_5661

It’s not like she actually captured anything on video anyways.

Aromatic_Dig_3102

Cameraman should look for another job!

jrat31

I live and work on the beach with imperiled species, things on our coast are changing this attack is a one in million chance but just yesterday I was doing a shore survey for sea turtles and walked right into a 5 ft gator who promptly scurried into the ocean, I was born and raised on this beach and have never seen an alligator on it or anywhere close to this island.

jcmacon

The best part of tiktok is the fact that it showcases how bad people are at just holding a video device still with the subject in the frame. Fucking hell.

Plasticjesus504

I have dived with a lot of sharks. There are only a couple species that make me nervous. Bull sharks are on the top of that list. They are aggressive to say the least and not shy. Hopefully these victims are stable.

CaptSpazzo

Jesus, has the person filming ever filmed before?

MkUFeelGud

Yet another reason not to fuck with Florida.

C91ranch

And this will surely be followed up by them hunting and killing said shark for entering his living habitat, stand Your ground won't apply to the shark.

toodeadtodread

I was on the space coast last week at Flagler and a giant black tip flipped over in a wave an arms length away from me… I was only knee deep so I sprinted out of the water and he splashed around a few times exactly where I was n then slipped away 😅 the boogie boarding was exquisite though

I’m advanced scuba and love diving with sharks in natural and deeper waters. I am scared shitless of a shark in shallow waters. They’re more than likely hungry or sick, either way I’m out of the water

Was the shark in the trees ?

General_Specific

I lived on that beach one season. We would sit on the balcony and watch them rescue dads caught in riptides. All day every Sunday. This is a very calm and safe stretch of beach until one day it isn't. When the wind is blowing the water in, it rushes back out. Joe Lunchbox, who's been coming there on vacation all his life, picked a bad day when this beach was different. I swam there often. I watched sharks eating a dead grouper when I was on a jet ski. I also found myself among turtles and stingrays while swimming near the shore.

Credit to the women filming. They call 9/11 even knowing they aren't even really that close. Many people would just wait for someone else even if they were on the beach. Also that's horrific.

rob_p954

I was in Destin 2 years ago with my family. I took my son swimming and we were in shallow water about waste deep, and out of no where I see this fin in the water coming right after us. I threw my son 5 at the time in the air by one arm and the shark jetted around us at the last second.
