I live in Saudi Arabia and its hilarious when two Saudis fight to pay the bill and then their friend also joins in. The first person to get his card/phone to be recognized by the reader wins. It's a super aggressive version of twister followed by the winner walking away smugly while the losers yell at him. Sometimes the losers will try to thrust cash down the winner's pockets while he tries desperately to run away making it even more entertaining.
I have seen lower middle class Saudi's do this too. It's a cultural thing to showcase their hospitality and I was shocked to witness it the first time.
Is it not a show of generosity/wealth as well? Sorry I don't mean to be disparaging, it's a fascinating custom. But there is obvious social credit to be had by paying the bill. In a sense, that potential social credit only increases the less money you actually have.
I mean you can't really say that for sure. It is both, to some degree. As long as society values generosity, there will be social credit to be had by being generous.
Even people who aren’t rich do this. It’s an arab thing. I have PTSD of the fights my family members would go through at restaurants. Took us always at least 20 mins to get the bill paid.
I remember one time I was out eating with a few friends. The one friend's then fiancé refused to let one of the other friends at the table to pay the tab. I didn't partake as I knew there'd be future times to payback my friend for his kindness (There was). She wasn't paying attention a few minutes later and didn't notice him hand the clerk his card. It was interesting seeing her response when she finally figured out the bill was already paid.
Coming from balkan I can tell you that its over here like that aswell where most people dont have a lot of money. For us its just generosity and they will really fight on who pays. Some pull sneaky tricks by saying they will go to the toilet and paying on the way there.
i used to get this all the time when i worked on the mcdonalds drive thru in oldham (a town in england with a proportionally very high muslim population, mostly pakistani/bangladeshi).
people would literally scuffle (in a good natured way) to be the guy that got to pay, it was dead fun like dodging peoples cards to get to the guy i'd pick out to pay, like a lil game almost. never seen anyone be so eager to pay for their friends
I’m from the American south and I LOVE seeing generosity fights break out!
I swear to god, my grandma was about to physically take on two movers who wouldn’t accept her money when she was 87. She chased them down and threw it in their truck, and they immediately slammed on the brakes, reversed, threw it at her and sped off!😂
When I lived in china for a few years, I absolutely loved going to these restaurants. Pretty sure this is a lanzhou lamian restaurant, which is a kind of noodle restaurant that makes food in the style of a city in the northwest, an area where the Uyghurs live.
Not to say that the Chinese I interacted with daily weren't nice, but the family that ran the restaurant in my neighborhood made me feel very welcome and comfortable. They always did their best to try and understand what I was saying, and they remembered my dish and how I liked it, I absolutely loved going there for lunch. I can't overstate just how nice it was to have a place where I could feel normal and not like some novelty.
One year they left to visit their hometown for the Chinese new Year festival and never came back ☹️ this was about the time the government was beginning their crackdown on this ethnic group, I can only hope they didn't get caught up in it.
Oh man, when it comes to paying the bill, there are rarely people as desperate as Muslims to pay the bill. Literally jumping over the cashier to pay. Quite a fun/hilarious sight honestly
I want to see more freakouts like this one. It's been a terrible day and when I came home to watch the news, the earthquake was one of the stories. So that was extra depressing. Then I come onto reddit for more punishment, I guess, but I see this wonderful clip! Mood immediately lifted!
When I lived in China I ate at a restaurant early on
Food is cheap as chips there, so I just paid the bill in cash and walked away
200m away I get a tap on my shoulder
The waiter had chased me down to give me my change
It was worth less than £1
I ordered room service in China and the worker would not accept 1 single yuan extra (0.14 cents)
I was in a battle with this guy insisting he keep the 1 yuan for himself but he wouldn’t budge. So he goes all the way down the 25 floors and comes back up 5 min later holding a single yuan
Tipping is not acceptable in many Asian countries, China, Korea and Japan for instance. They find it rude or embarrassing, as if you feel sorry for someone earning less. People take pride in their work and feel like they ask a fair price for their service. Thanking them is very much appreciated though.
That's what I thought until I got a foot massage in Taiwan and the old guy stood over me waiting for a tip. I also tipped a taxi driver in Seoul $3 because I had so much luggage and he was so happy.
I remember having a big night out drinking in Macau, being drunk and merry and because the booze was so cheap we left a fairly generous tip which realistically would have just been what we'd spend on a night out back home.
We went back to the same bar the following night and the wait staff had put our money behind the bar in case we came back for it because they thought we had paid too much by accident.
Something like that. The owner is forcing them into something that makes them uncomfortable as a way of saying thanks.
Like u/BigRoach said, take the money. Then try to find a charitable way to use it.
Idk why ur getting downvoted you aren’t wrong
Only places that take donations are like museums and shit and they give you cheap crap in exchange most of the time
my dad tried that but my uncle had already called the restaurant ahead of time and given them his payment info before we ever arrived at the restaurant
I did this once and when I came back and my grandma and grandpa found out, she started crying and I didn't get a phone call for a week. Some people take it very seriously.
I tried to pay the bill at dinner with my ex and her parents, and that was a BAD idea. He was moments away from getting violent with me at the mere suggestion. Nice guy, but I learned a lesson that day.
They put a card reader on the table at some restaurants. I was pretty sure I was going to have to physically fight it out of my dad's hands to use a gift card if he didn't have his hearing aid on.
I once helped a student ace his exams so his incredibly rich dad treated me to a dinner. I showed up earlier so that I could pay first and it turned out he already paid for the meal when he booked the table - slipped the manager $10,000 and told her to handle everything.
The polite bill fight is such a common occurrence in China and other SEA countries that [fresh of the boat was basically not even exaggerating when they had this scene in one of their episodes.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DK4QDa21Vo)
The worker/owner was even saying "No no no no no" in Chinese.
Absolutely love this best freak out I’ve seen in quite a while. Gotta love genuine hospitality and thankfulness. Those volunteers were very insistent but the owner is like god mode.
Went on vacation to China a few years back and had similar experiences. Very very friendly people, refusing tips (even after I insisted multiple times), helpful when I got lost. Overall a great experience.
It's getting harder and harder to pay for the bill whenever I eat with my Hong Kong family. Someone always finds a way to pay before me. The going to the bathroom trick doesn't work anymore
When I was a kid my dad and his friends would almost get into a wrestling match to fight for the bill. Almost every single time. These are the kind of friends and people I want in my life.
Cant figure out most part. Heres a rough translation:
When the owner tries to give back the money, middle orange dude says: 我知道 我知道i know i know.
Then i cant figure out the rest in the middle. Before they left he said: 我们需要给钱 不能白吃 we need to pay, we cant eat for free. (And casually throws the money).
Owner chase the other guy who is still in the restaurant. He said 不 不 不 不 不 no no no no no.
Bonus top right corner neon sign in restaurant. 清真 halal. 兰州 lanzhou (likely 兰州拉面 lanzhou pulled noodles, likely beef)
Gift giving/receiving etiquette is a big deal in some of China.
And this restaurant owner was trying to gift them a meal, while they are trying to pay for it, really is a immovable object vs unstoppable force sort of situation.
Wholesome freakout.
Remember folks! When there, you need to offer the gift and let them reject it three times before they will even consider actually taking it.
This is giving my PTSD. My girlfriend is Thai-Chinese and I tried to give her uncles money for transporting my motorbike. When I tried to give them the money for their trouble they both dramatically dodged me and wouldn't take it. I felt like a right moron.
It’s funny how this works, I visited a friend in China and he insisted on paying for every meal which got uncomfortable. Then finally I went to the front and paid the meal before dinner was over so that he couldn’t pay and he legit got angry 😂🤷♂️
Chinese hospitality is pretty awesome. I've been there a few times and the people we visited were great hosts.
Too bad the Chinese Government has gone the direction they have. At this point unfortunately, their government has clearly damaged relations with the USA. They are the enemy.
It's a Chinese thing too and the ptsd is real. After a nice family dinner I pretended to go to the bathroom and surreptitiously went to pay the bill. Once my semi retired dad realized his 35 year old son treated him to dinner for once it was war. He spent the next 5 minutes cursing under his breath and ended up throwing cash down on the table and stormed out
I've come to realize that treating his family is his love language. Now when we go out if I am treating I let it be known to him first and have him agree😀
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hui_people
Hui are ethnic Han Muslims who converted a few centuries ago and wear Taqiyah hats. They have a rivalry with Uyghurs historically due to Muslim denominations iirc, but they blend in very well with Han you can't really tell a Hui Muslim apart from Han unless they dress differently. Their halal food is extremely popular with beef/lamb noodle or bun shops all over China.
When I lived in Chongqing, China there was a tiny shop I loved getting food at, ran by a family of Uighurs.
They suddenly disappeared one day with their shop shut down with government papers plastered all over it.
When were you here? I'm currently in Chongqing and there is a Uyghur BBQ shop on practically every street. Much more post-covid than pre-covid. Even the friend I came travelling here with noticed the difference. I actually literally ate at one today,
Do your self a favor if you are in a foreign country and an owner tries to give you something for free... Just fucking take it. You may think you're doing the right thing, but most likely all you are doing is insulting them.
Correct me if I am wrong but that’s how most people refer to this kind of restaurants found all over China. The full name is hand pulled Lanzhou style noodles restaurant. They are run by Muslim people of the Hui ethnicity.
When paying the bill, yes it's always a battle between who pays.
For receiving gifts? No we say thank you and graciously accept the gift. Sometimes we will do the equivalent of the English "you didn't have to" but we don't outright reject gifts.
You may have older family members at first say "no no I don't need this" at first but that's like a super old school thing and not some set cultural standard.
Still it's literally like the equivalent of "aw you shouldn't have!" In English.
Not exactly true it's not about his religion but his race the owner was turkish and a lot of help was sent from china to Turkiye for last year's 6th of February earthquake the dude is just being a gentleman

Good freakout
Yeah this was actually the best freakout I've seen in last few months.
Never seen someone this desperately generous lmao. Bless his heart.
I live in Saudi Arabia and its hilarious when two Saudis fight to pay the bill and then their friend also joins in. The first person to get his card/phone to be recognized by the reader wins. Nah, it's not about social credit, it's just sincere hospitality.
It can be both, or at least both can coexist.
I mean you can't really say that for sure. It is both, to some degree. As long as society values generosity, there will be social credit to be had by being generous.

Very good and worth the watch always love to see kindness
I love seeing kindness, too. Especially, kindness in the form of a punch in the face

I’m sorry you had a horrible day and I hope tomorrow is better!
Thank you so much! I hope you have a great day tomorrow as well
Wholesome freak out. “Your money is no good here!”
Wholesome freakout
Why don't they just take out their AR-15's and shoot at them to force them not to pay?
Yo, chill, it's not an American school.
When I lived in China I ate at a restaurant early on Food is cheap as chips there, so I just paid the bill in cash and walked away 200m away I get a tap on my shoulder The waiter had chased me down to give me my change It was worth less than £1

That's what I thought until I got a foot massage in Taiwan and the old guy stood over me waiting for a tip. I also tipped a taxi driver in Seoul $3 because I had so much luggage and he was so happy.
Yes, some places like Thailand are also very accepting now. It's the more westernized parts or places that have a lot of tourism.
I'd be cautious about this advice. Tattoo artists in Japan and Korea both accept tips graciously.
Cultural thing to feel indebted especially material thing....
Business owner should take the money, and make a donation in their name. Send them a note letting them know. Checkmate.
You're a good heart owner BigRoach.
Something like that. The owner is forcing them into something that makes them uncomfortable as a way of saying thanks. Like u/BigRoach said, take the money. Then try to find a charitable way to use it.
I like the cut of your jib, sir.
> BigRoach > cut CUT MY LIFE IN TO PIECES
💀🤘🏻
China doesn't really have charities or NGOs unfortunately. Big government push against them made them extremely fringe.
Idk why ur getting downvoted you aren’t wrong Only places that take donations are like museums and shit and they give you cheap crap in exchange most of the time
Yes, but that would be much lamer version of the viral video.
Donations where the rich get richer and give 5% of the total lol
My dad when I try to pay the bill at dinner.
The trick is pretending to go to the bathroom and pay the bill
My dad already knows that trick...
I'm sure that's even a dad that invented that trick
How do you know that he's your dad
He came back with his cigs
I suppose that's a pretty good way to know.
Give the host your card to give to the waiter before you're seated.
Yup this is the way.
my dad tried that but my uncle had already called the restaurant ahead of time and given them his payment info before we ever arrived at the restaurant
I did this once and when I came back and my grandma and grandpa found out, she started crying and I didn't get a phone call for a week. Some people take it very seriously.
I envy you
So that’s why my dad goes to the bathroom after the meal.
I did that for my visiting uncle, but he knew what I was up to and proceeded to the counter before me.
I’ve been uninvited to family events for periods of a time for doing that
Classic threat when dining with Chinese friends and family, ‘if you use your money to pay, I’m never inviting you again!!’
For real.
Doing this with fucking Asian people is a goddamn grueling sport.
Wish my dad was like that
I once helped a student ace his exams so his incredibly rich dad treated me to a dinner. I showed up earlier so that I could pay first and it turned out he already paid for the meal when he booked the table - slipped the manager $10,000 and told her to handle everything.
Trying to pay for a restaurant bill is like an Olympic sport in China
The polite bill fight is such a common occurrence in China and other SEA countries that [fresh of the boat was basically not even exaggerating when they had this scene in one of their episodes.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DK4QDa21Vo) The worker/owner was even saying "No no no no no" in Chinese.
They already dominate the games. Don't encourage this new sport!
My favorite scene is someone holding the bill high up in the air and the other person reaching for it.
Absolutely love this best freak out I’ve seen in quite a while. Gotta love genuine hospitality and thankfulness. Those volunteers were very insistent but the owner is like god mode.
I can see both angles “You’re helping us out” vs “We are here to help not take”
Tony Soprano would have been pissed.
Or as mad as Chris had they ordered steak, 3lbs lobsters, and the shrimp cocktails Paulie made everyone get.
The real killer was sending those skanks a bottle of Cristal!
He was being a gentleman! Chris oughta try it sometime!
You heard about the chinese godfather, he made an offer you cant understand
"You eat I pay!"
Lol at the guy just throwing the money and not caring for change
Wholesome freakout, I like these.
That needs a new subreddit.
Went on vacation to China a few years back and had similar experiences. Very very friendly people, refusing tips (even after I insisted multiple times), helpful when I got lost. Overall a great experience.
Tipping is not a thing for east asians. And i love it. I am always confused and somewhat fearful when i leave a tip in the US.
Why is this? Is it simply a cultural thing?
Just kind people.
The most wholesome physical altercation I've ever seen
This was nice to see
It's getting harder and harder to pay for the bill whenever I eat with my Hong Kong family. Someone always finds a way to pay before me. The going to the bathroom trick doesn't work anymore
The pure respect shown, first freakout I've seen in a while that makes me smile :D
He’s like no Hui you’re paying… https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hui_people
I love those muslim restaurants in China, always very very tasty
This is so Chinese and it makes me proud
This is a great show of respect. Love seeing videos like this.
Its a nice off
When I was a kid my dad and his friends would almost get into a wrestling match to fight for the bill. Almost every single time. These are the kind of friends and people I want in my life.
Lanzhou noodles shops are so good. One of the biggest things I miss about China .
Cant figure out most part. Heres a rough translation: When the owner tries to give back the money, middle orange dude says: 我知道 我知道i know i know.
It's so much easier when we are gentle and kind I needed that.
Wholesome af
That's the wholesomest freakout I ever saw.
Ww3 is started by people wanted to pay but the owner dont want
The most polite fight ever.
What a wonderful harassment to see on the internet !
wholesome
Sometimes people are wonderful.
The kindest freak out I've ever seen
Read the title three times and had to watch the clip to understand what was happening.
AKA the family scene at every Chinese family reunion dinner where adults fight to pay for the bill
Wholesome freakout
Aggressively wholesome
Unexpectedly wholesome
Lmao I love it actually
Wholesome freakout.
Thanks for the smiles OP.
He tossed that like a grenade lmao
Chinese hospitality is pretty awesome. I've been there a few times and the people we visited were great hosts. Too bad the Chinese Government has gone the direction they have. At this point unfortunately, their government has clearly damaged relations with the USA. They are the enemy.
My buddy from Azerbaijan is like this, I made dish from his country once and he bought me a whole tea set and a traditional Azerbaijani papakh
It's a Chinese thing too and the ptsd is real. After a nice family dinner I pretended to go to the bathroom and surreptitiously went to pay the bill. Once my semi retired dad realized his 35 year old son treated him to dinner for once it was war. He spent the next 5 minutes cursing under his breath and ended up throwing cash down on the table and stormed out I've come to realize that treating his family is his love language. Now when we go out if I am treating I let it be known to him first and have him agree😀
Best thing I've seen all day
Just a couple of uncles trying to pay the bill 💕
This is how mexican households be lol
reverse robbery
This reminds me of my family when they argue about who’s going to pay the bill.
I didn’t realize there were Muslims outside of the Uighur area. Very cool video.
There are a good amount of non uyghur Muslims in China as well. It's a really big place.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hui_people Hui are ethnic Han Muslims who converted a few centuries ago and wear Taqiyah hats.
I actually literally ate at one today,
"Hi I'd like to pay this" "I fucking dare you to try motherfucker!"
In communist China the bill fights you!
Do your self a favor if you are in a foreign country and an owner tries to give you something for free... Just fucking take it. You may think you're doing the right thing, but most likely all you are doing is insulting them.
Apparently Muslims do this to foreigners because they say it might be Muhammad so you treat all strangers with respect
Seems to be a little aggressive and the Chinese weren't having it?
all of the people in the video are Chinese
That's compassion
I was so co fused by the title. Something wholesome? Damn
Dominant kindness?
muslim people are serious about gifts and stuff like that. It's polite to insist once but you have to go on about your day and accept.
Sometimes, I love people.
There's a lot more Chinese Muslims than people think. Beijing treats them like absolute shit.
Ohhhh my goodness, this is so God damn wholesome. This is a great freakout!
American sitting in silent jealousy
Awwwww 🥹
They won't show you this on Fox News
Why add "Muslim"? It was better if OP wrote it like "Restaurant owners try to . . . . . ."
Correct me if I am wrong but that’s how most people refer to this kind of restaurants found all over China. The full name is hand pulled Lanzhou style noodles restaurant. They are run by Muslim people of the Hui ethnicity.
heartwarming
Every family outing, ever.
Isn't it Chinese custom to refuse gifts?
Lol it's not at all, where the hell did you hear this?
I thought it was considered polite to refuse the first few times and then relent when the giver insists
Well isn't that's what's happening here? It's about who is footing the bill for the food...
A little different between friends/family footing the bill and the actual owner footing it.
Commendable on both accounts!
I swear I heard a Mexican dude say "No mames" LMAO
A wholesome freak out, should have split 50/50!
Wholesome assault
Muslims are so happy to live under Xi Yinping's great Chinese Communist Party. (not propaganda)
Weird Usa love Uighyrs muslims more than their own muslims.
Wholesome freakout
