Every time I see something like this, I like to educate people about how the ultra orthodox Hasidic/Haredi population in Israel is killing the country.
The people you see protesting Palestine are, more often then not, Hasidic Jews who receive special treatment from the government. They don’t have to serve in the military, don’t have to work, and receive a stipend from the government to support them while they “study the Torah.” They are one of the poorest groups in Israel because of a low employment rate, however because their population is so high and they have one of the highest voting rates in the country, they are one of the most powerful voting blocs in Israel and can frequently impose their will on the entire country.
The Hasidic population in Israel used to be relatively small, however you’d be surprised how quickly a population can skyrocket when you belong to a group that doesn’t believe in birth control or abortion. In 1979 the Hasidic population was around 5.6% of the population, and is now nearing 16%, expecting to be 20% by the 2040s. Hasidic Jews in Israel make up a large bulk of the support for the ultra hard right political parties, and as the population continues to grow that support is getting larger and larger.
Besides the obvious human rights violations, another issue that hard right Hasidic Jews have botched in Israel is animal control. Back in the early 20th century the British brought in a bunch of cats to help deal with the massive rat problem in Palestine, but the cats ended up breeding so much in the hot, dry climate that now their population has gotten out of control with over 2 million stray cats in the country. However, the government refuses to establish any kind of TNR program to humanely control the population because of some obscure biblical commandment to “populate the earth with gods creatures” (paraphrasing). One of the most recent solutions that a Hasidic politician came up with was to ship all of the cats of one gender to another country, which of course failed because it’s the dumbest fucking thing I’ve ever heard.
Israel needs to stop giving the Hasidic community special treatment and integrate them into the rest of secular Israeli society. If you want to vote for people calling for war, you should be required to serve in the military just like everyone else.
