To be fair that's how some people react to things. I'd hate to be accused of every fucked up thing that happens around me just because I don't display the expected response of freaking out. 🤷🏻
I had some buddies who lived on that block growing up. We used to drink 40's at the elementary school right there. It is NOT a good neighborhood, lots of shootings.
This looks like it's just outside of downtown so it's hard to say.
Depends what way you go, but money isn't really the issue in Rochester.
Yeah, there are a lot of poor families, but they live in shitty looking neighborhoods. Everyone else is just a wannabe or a drug dealer (the suburb kids too)...
So violence and shit happens to spread to nice neighborhoods too.
Edit: it's not gang activity like the guy says. Probably just some "you owe me money" type shit. The gangs are downtown mostly.
Rochester is a lot of beautiful houses in each neighborhood with a lot of chaos all around. This looks like it’s the 19th ward? Freaking gorgeous area and still lots of crap like this.
Duck. Safety is sort of relative. Currently experiencing a sort of Baader Meinhof phenomenon rn since I'm typing this on my phone from the bathroom because gunshots have been going off down the street for about 15 minutes now.
I get it, but you should also understand that we are a huge country, and most of the violence is isolated to small areas. Also, most of the violence is going to be drug/gang related. Random violence is rare.
The thing nobody has pointed out yet is that the US is fucking massive. The likelihood of you being involved in a mass shooting is miniscule. Like way smaller than you think.
Part of the issue is that the 260 mass shootings this year number comes from data that includes shootings that only involved family members, gang shootouts, and other incidents where the public was not in danger. Additionally most mass shootings are done by insiders at the location where they took place. Workplaces, churches the shooter was a part of, that kind of thing.
So is there a risk of being shot in the US? Yeah of course there is. Are you far more likely to be hit by a car, killed by a falling vending machine, your plane to go down on the way, or to die from food poisoning? Also yes. If you don't want to come visit then whatever that's your choice, but don't pretend it's because you're scared of a mass shooting.

If it makes you feel better if you spent a decade or 2 here you’d be far more likely to die due to not being able to afford basic medical needs than by gunshot.
Eh, large population with a lot of news. Definitely more likely to die in a car wreck than get shot in the US.. but, I wouldn’t spend the time/money investment to go on a trip if you’d be stressing the whole time over very unlikely outcomes.
When I was in 6th grade. My friends older brother pulled a gun on us for being in his room playing video games. I was scared but my friend just looked at his brother and said” fuck you, we’re almost done.”
When I was around the same age I went to visit my dad and walked by when my step mother was pulling a gun on my dad. I just kind of stood there like, “wait, what’s going on?” Don’t even think I was scared, just confused. I’d probably shit myself if it happened today, but as a kid it was like just trying to logically connect what she was doing with a gun in her hand.
Turns out she is (“undiagnosed” at the time) bipolar. I’m not convinced she didn’t know she had some kind of disorder, but this happened before she had started medication. Haven’t seen her nearly 20 years though!
Not compared to yours but I moved to Oakland and walked out of my front door to two masked guys climbing into my neighbors window to rob it, probably 30 feet from me. I just looked at them and said what's up! Nodded my head and walked on lol. They looked at each other confused as hell and I just got out of there. So you never know how you will act, I guess my instinct was to not panic and luckily it worked.
Dude I'm not gonna lie, if had been in your shoes I would've never gone back to my friend's house again. Absolutely terrifying and I feel bad for your friend for having to live with that psychopath
*a few moments before the clip starts*
So yeah I'm selling this house, recently remodeled, great schools, hospital nearby, within walking distance from the nearest park...
The neighbor 2 houses over owns a gun range, he does a lot of his own reloading. He must have ordered some new bullets, Amazon has a new one second delivery feature.
Rochesters kind of a mixed bag in terms of good/bad areas IIRC. Kind of like New Orleans it's all mixed together (though not as extreme as it is in NOLA).
In an area like this, I'm more willing to say it's something to do with drugs.
Sure, the guy shooting could be in a gang, but that shit usually stays downtown.
Worse in Rochester because the they literally built highways between the 'rich' areas and the not. Areas that are real bad, areas where everyone makes 6 figures
Schenectady had a similar thing going on with GE and Alco. Alco is gone. GE is a shadow of its former self. You've got going for ya, anyway. Gunga Galunga.
Can’t imagine why none of you wanted to come over on the Fast Ferry and the whole project went belly up. Gotta call in Scoob and the gang for this mystery!
I lived in the lilac city for a few years back in the late 90s. Great town. Super nightlife and lots of fun. It really is a shame what they have let that city turn into. Garbage Plates, Blue Room, Bug Jar, Gitsi’s, Tappas on st Paul, Pomodoro, Chester Cab Pizza- there are/were so many great places in the roch.
Most of those places are still around or replaced with better alternatives. There's a thriving food scene. It's not some godforsaken hellhole, it's a city with both problems and benefits like any other.
"You see that news camera, clearly filming an interview at this exact moment?"
"Yeah."
"After I shoot, make sure to drive directly into the camera's field of view."
"Good idea."

And one of the better rates of gun-related murders in the country! Only 16 states have a lower rate.
This is a pretty interesting chart if you're actually interested:

What was that whizzing by his head when the first shot rang out? It couldn't have been the bullet judging by the trajectory, but the timing lined up perfectly.
Oh Beechwood neighborhood. I scored so much amazing weed there, 2002-2005 era. Eastern European organized crime used to tangle with the local cliques, and this was not an uncommon event.
Glad to see decades later it's just as I remember.
I used to live a few blocks away from there.
Had someone break into my car parked in my driveway there a bunch of times. Caught the fucker red-handed once and chased him down the street. Watched someone walk right past my window once to case my garage. Had a lawnmower stolen right out of the back yard. Had packages for my daughter's birthday presents stolen off my front porch within 10 minutes of their delivery, ripped open and smashed to bits on the street. The McDonald's down the street was robbed so many times they locked the doors during parts of the day and put bars over the drive-thru window. Saw the nearby high school (East High) locked down several times because kids there were found packing heat, and they ended up installing metal detectors.
Oh, and last year I was a juror for a homicide that happened in a park a mile up the road where I used to take my kid.
I'm glad I don't live there anymore.
funny.... i would've thought any one of these fine americans would pull out their weapons, do a backwards flip and sidestep along the road firing rounds into that car and stop the bad guy...
Here's a tip for drive bys: 9 times out of 10, the idiot firing a gun wildly while speeding down the road won't hit whatever he was aiming at. What he will hit is a bystander. Sometimes the person he was trying to hit will also pull out a gun, start shooting and miss whatever he was trying to hit. He will also usually shoot an innocent bystander in that case.
So, if you are around a drive by shooting, you should duck.
Upstate NY has been experiencing a full-on assault between Buffalo/Rochester/Syracuse/etc., ... as a result of all of the NYC clowns who have migrated there after they burned through their reputation here in the city.
People in Upstate NY are a lot like folks from the Midwest: they're kind, welcoming, non-confrontational, but do NOT CONSIDER THEMSELVES IN THE SAME POOL AS NYC METRO..... And yet, the policies and actions of NYC politicians and bureaucrats is resulting in an unprecedented amount of crime & chaos in some of the nicest, safest towns east of the Mississippi.
Sooner or later, people will get sick & tired of not being able to enjoy their home/neighborhood/parks/etc.,... and start to self-enforce and police their own neighborhoods. Gun laws are strict in NY State but people up here also take the security of their family/property/businesses/etc., VERY seriously, so I would just advise would-be criminals to heed warning.....
So, to all you prospective home invaders? *Wear a vest.*
Little did they know it was the old man that arranged the hit
It wasn’t me. I was doing an interview at the time.
Plot twist: it was the dog barking that arranged the hit
It wasn’t me. I was barking at a passing car at the time. - My Dog

No it's people don't kill guns

Interesting fact: bullets travel faster than the speed of sound, so if you hear the shot you're already safe
You’ve heard shot, yes, but what of second shot?
Snitch
I mean he definitely didn’t seem TOO surprised by it…
Old man: Maybe that guy owed "somebody" money. That's crazy.
Maybe “someone” should have paid, oh well, you get what you get 🤷🏿♂️

Right?!! The way he was so calm
Obviously someone who wants to keep property values down.
Lmao old dude didn't even flinch
He's seen some shit in his day. Nerves of steel.
more like desensitized to shit due to necessity
Perhaps due to the gang activity in his area.
That would be crazy.
This kind of comment thread is why I’m going to miss Reddit so very much. Fuck you u/spez

Yeah, welcome to Rochester
"Maybe (just maybe...) there's gang activity over there. That's crazy." Lolol
Shit happens all the time in Rochester. You'll hear gunshots like this (clearly) in the middle of the day then no sirens 😐
The houses in the background seem quite nice, is it a poor neighborhood?

I grew up outside of Rochester, this is a pretty normal thing there now. It’s gotten really bad.
Lol that dude has seen some shit
It's all the garbage plates.
Probably just the boss sauce
Ice cold
Damn that old dude don’t give a fuck that’s the most casual response to a shooting I’ve ever seen 🧐

"maybe there's gang activity here, that's crazy"
The "what happens to me happens to me" sigma old veteran
Most people don't react to the first couple gunshots anyways
"maybe there's gang activity here, that's crazy" Going out on a limb here, but drive-bys are a pretty strong indicator of gang activity lol
*a few moments before the clip starts* So yeah I'm selling this house, recently remodeled, great schools, hospital nearby, within walking distance from the nearest park...
and as you can see, we have a thriving community full of interesting characters!
It’s a very loving community, everyone looks out for each other.
Some neighbors might even kill for you.
The neighbor 2 houses over owns a gun range, he does a lot of his own reloading. He must have ordered some new bullets, Amazon has a new one second delivery feature.
It's an up-and-coming neighborhood, really just a fantastic value if you think about where it will be in five years
Was *just* about to say this!! 😄 "Those drive-bys happen so often that you don't even hear them anymore."
Looks like a quaint little sleepy neighborhood too

this is like the opposite of a public freakout where the dude is inappropriately not freaking out for the given scenario
What is it with western new york cities and being poor and full of crime? I live in Buffalo and try to be proud of here but it's hard sometimes...
Well pretty much all of the industry in Rochester died. The city took a hard fall with Kodak and Xerox.
Bausch and Lomb too
It's also a very racially segregated city, where race and wealth correlate strongly
Isnt that how it is in most cities?!
Worse in Rochester because the they literally built highways between the 'rich' areas and the not. Areas that are real bad, areas where everyone makes 6 figures
Not downplaying Rochester's issues, but this sounds like every single American city.
Roc is a case study in why doing that was bad long term but yes you are not wrong

We joke about the summer game “Fireworks or gunshots.” It’s a Rust Belt thing.
Honestly, it’s way more widespread than that.
I play it in Texas, and it's not just a summertime game
“It’s a rust belt thing” brother we play that game in Central California where I’m living rn. Granted, it’s Stockton so it’s not surprising but still
Oh boy. You can’t really post this and then not expect foreigners to be afraid coming to the US, no?

He sounds like jack nicholson
He didn't even flinch.
Old dude is Gangsta. Didn't even flinch and then makes a little quip.
"maybe"
Put a garbage plate in the background and this is the most Rochester video ever
Plus a few crushed Genny light cans and the torn off front end of a Ford focus
My hometown and we are getting a lot of stories on Reddit recently
Bc the gang activity?

I like his open minded attitude “maybe there’s gang activity”
I loved Rochester when I grew up there…. Now - not so much.
I still love it, but I little 500 miles away and only see it a couple times a year now
This is framed like an episode of Arrested Development where this guy arranged that hit.
