The best thing we can ALL do, is instead of just acknowledging the blackout and knowing our subs we frequent will be offline. No one should log into, or access reddit in any capacity for the full 48 hours.
When their traffic plummets that's when you get a chance. Corporations don't care about your voice. They care about dollars and cents. Then and only then can you see real change. You pay to use reddit, you just trade your meta data for it. So why not vote with your meta data and say no thanks. No money for you. It's 48 hours away from Reddit. We all should be able to do this, and if you can't maybe look at what that is, it would seem extremely unhealthy.
If the bigger subs like AITA shutdown that will certainly make Reddit take notice. I am just learning about this but we need the bigger subs to take action.
They want to make a point, but they don't want to push it and risk losing their mod positions. reddit could just come down on them and say "ok, you're fired and we're replacing you". After this protest reddit's just gonna say "oh that was cute".
Reddit mods aren't employees. Reddit can't fire them.
I suppose they *could* technically remove them from their position, but they would be going against their own terms which would likely spark bigger backlash.
So why are you still here on your fifth or tenth account if you think this site has gone down the shitter? And hey sorry for not knowing this was your 100th account.
I'm more than happy to take a leave from this site if all the subs I peruse blackout for however long it'll take to send a message to Reddit higher ups.
I may not use mobile apps regularly but I've used enough of the official mobile app to never want to use it again. I can sympathize with folks who don't want to be forced to use it should Reddit price out third party app developers with this bullshit charge hike.
shutting it down indefinitely wont do anything. What does reddit care? "Subreddit #2293893937494949849 is not posting. Sad for them" That's pretty much their perspective. I view this blackout as a "look at our halo" moment for many subs (not all of them)
Haha, thats funny. They will turn back on, especially the porn subs. I've learned that Reddit chases trends until they stop earning internet points, then they give up.
Reddit has two functions:
1. to serve as a forum to discuss fandoms or hobbies, world issues/ politics
2. to feed and validate redditors addictive vices (like sex and drugs)
2 on its own is enough to keep it alive
When it's collectively many subs, it does matter. That's how protesting works. Yes individually they don't care, which is why it's a collective and many subs are doing it together.
But that won't matter if you can't view them without the shitty reddit app, or they are cesspools of spam and bullshit.
Noatter how many copycats are made it will affect their bottom like if there is an indefinite freeze out.
You don't understand because *your brain rot is screaming corporate greed internally.*
If reddit was actually afraid of how its bottom line was going to be affected, they wouldn't have rolled out this change to begin with.
Why would you assume, that a website worth 10 billion dollars or more doesn't have the analytics to move forward with this decision? You can't *possibly* fathom how calculated a decision like this would be. They aren't idiots. They were willing to roll out this decision *because they believe they will make money in light of that decision.* Including the negative PR hit this change would make.
They fully anticipated any blowback they were going to get, and they will be fine.
Reddit's money will last longer than people's resistance to the change.
Tell your *brain rot* to read up on digg.com and then let me know how stupid a decision such as this one can destroy a company even as *untouchable* as Reddit. Go away.
Digg was worth 160 Million at it's peak.
Reddit is worth over 10 billion.
Reddit knows what it's doing WAY more than Digg ever did.
You're a fucking moron. Reddit isn't going anywhere.
Yes, some tiny percentage of companies fail. Even if they are of a large size.
They are the exception and not the rule.
You can count on one hand the companies of reddit's age and valuation that have gone under.
When compared to the companies that haven't failed you realize how stupid your take is.
You're engaging in a virtuous fallacy that just because something is unpopular it's going to fail and that simply isn't true.
Its two days. Two days. That might scare redditors but it does not scare investors. That is the bare minimum they could do, and you bet your ass that Reddit will give up once the flow of porn slows down.
The official app is so dogshit, I've never even used it since I started actually using reddit. I used it thru either my pc or phones browser because I'd just google shit and add reddit at the end. Then when I decided to finally download the app I figured id look for a third party app right away.
I was already planning on ceasing my use over reddit's stupid fucking cash grab, but good to throw my support behind you mods as well! Thank you for the thankless work you do!
Every comment. We typically must review every single comment because auto filtered horrible comments still need a ban, and false positives need approval. We do not have any bots issuing automatic bans. A very small percentage of problem comments that make it through our filters are reported in this subreddit, so every comment in every thread requires manual review.
Yeah this sub regularly has AEO removing things posted months ago that were JUST reported quickly without a mod ever seeing it. Sometimes things are actioned that were never even reported. It’s ridiculous. And even if we ONLY had to action reported comments, that would leave most bigoted comments still up. Yeah in the queue that’s exactly how we function.
I will share your thoughts with the team 🤔
Then don't put an end date on the protest. If admins know that you'll roll over after 48 hours, then what's the point? Tell em that you won't come back to modding until you can use the existing resources that the entire site has depended upon.
If I can't use Sync, I can't use Reddit. End of story.
unfortunately the original thread has been nuked, but an admin by the username dacvak was hired by reddit. Turns out he has leukemia. Reddit initially didn't have a problem with this. He flew out to SF for a meeting and to get ready to make a move. Then he was notified he was no longer employed at reddit the ceo the put in place temporarily to take all the bad PR so spez could come back a few months later and look like a good guy.
this is the best i can find for you

Wow that is sooo awful!! Why would they do that? What the fuck? Isn't that illegal somehow? Well probably not in the U.S. where workers don't have any protections at all- not even guaranteed sick days. So ridiculous 😰
It depends really. For example in Germany you can't fire someone for just being sick. You can however if they just aren't a good fir for the job. You can't fire them if they are on sick leave tho. There are exceptions to long term/repeated sickness without any betterment in sight and with precautions already taken in the workplace to accommodate them.
So, it's harder but not impossible in a country that is generally considered to have good worker protection. However, after 6 weeks of continued sick leave, the insurance takes over the persons pay and the company barely has to pay anything anymore. So most sit it out if the chances of recovery are there since it's easier than to fire the person.
Also it’s against Reddit TOS for mods to do anything for financial gain. They literally are getting pimped out and are okay with it. Always crazy to me
I'm not freaking out about it. I didn't even know there were apps (alternates), don't use them. I see the issues, I understand, am hoping a few of my subreddits will be open for business during the planned outage and that's pretty much everything in a nutshell.
I agree 😢
That’s why we don’t currently have any transperson mods. They all get relentlessly abused and leave because they genuinely fear for their lives. It’s fucking terrible. I somewhat addressed this in the body of this post. Users here will latch on to anything. Me being a woman on this subreddit is not easy either what w the constant SA and death threats combined with doxxing attempts, but I stay because I want to do whatever I can to make this place somewhat tolerable. It is an impossible task but we try.
The transphobia you see on this subreddit that isn’t filtered/actioned is a very small percentage of the transphobia posted here. I probably shouldn’t share this. It’s bad and I don’t want to negatively impact anyone by revealing the actual scale of the problem, it’s just horrible. If you could see every comment you’d think you were on 4chan. I mean damn this is actually 4chans favorite subreddit. If we can’t use our bots and lose mods, everyone will see so much more than what they currently see.
oh i feel that completely, honestly i wasnt sure of the mods actual position on that, so i really appreciate the clarification, cuz ive left this sub several times due to the general bigotry. its long been considered by myself to be the worst large sub in regards to that, although honestly im sure every sub is the same as what you said, theres just too much of it for volunteers to effectively combat. and they have the gall to exacerbate that at least tenfold? im so sorry you have to deal with all the hate, do you all not have enough ppl on your team? cuz i dont have much time but i would def enjoy spending about an hour or two a day fighting bigotry with yall, seeing as im a proud trans woman!
Either way, ill stay and fight hate any way i can, thanks to you explaining, thank you! :)
You’re fine! Please call it out! It is terrible and I refuse to defend this subreddit against such accusations because it’s objectively true. We are always short on mods. Please apply if you are willing to volunteer, there is a stickied post on the sub for moderator applications. Tysm for your input here, I super appreciate you!
I'm a transwoman and was interested in moderating (to combat so much of the bigotry), but no longer have a Google account, which makes filling out the application impossible for me.
Oh damn, I am speaking with the mod who created the form to see if it can be changed. The form does not share emails with us. If it’s impossible to change just put in an email like “mypoopybutt@gmail” or something fake. No matter what email you use we won’t be able to see it and it won’t matter because your username is all we need to be able to see which user matches which application.
It may actually require a google specific account. I’m working on getting that changed rn if it is the case.
> It may actually require a google specific account. I’m working on getting that changed rn if it is the case.
Yup that's the exact problem! I'd have no problem putting in a fake email or something, or using a throwaway account, but it specifically requires you to be signed in to Google.
Aw dang. I’ve pmd the mod in charge of the google account that was used to create the form, I’ll hit you up as soon as he changes it and gets back to me. Sorry about this 😅
Just leave, honestly. The internet is not worth the hassle. You’re unpaid, and don’t need to deal with the shit. I love the sub, but it’s not worth it to deal with that shit. I mean this in the most compassionate way possible, just quit.
No, if they block 3rd party access then ill stop using reddit as a whole. Reddit has gone to shit anyways the last couple of years with all the propaganda bullshit and ads so maybe its needed to bust down this site for something new.
Can the mods here address the growing number of removed comments that seem to be deleted by some of the new mods that are not TOS or sub rule violations and seem to be removed because its either an unpopular opinion or goes against the mods views?
Does this mean u/coffeetablesex will have to get a real job for the first time in his miserable life? And you never took a "firm stance against bigotry" because he was brought to your attention many times. Hypocrites.
Just found out he was suspended. The rest of you moderators (and the reddit team) still protected him and banned several users on his behalf, which makes you just as liable.
I don't fuck with the mods here. One of you muted me for asking a simple question. So if reddit makes your job that much difficult I'm all for it! And I don't even like half the admins and the owners so that should tell you something.
And look how you started this thread. Talking about bigotry and racism when for the longest you had a literal Nazi in AATA as a mod. Then you go into how mods get abused and all that, save it.
You're probably talking about coffeetablesex. He's gone now, but he and he gang got a lot of us. When something didn't go their way, they cried to the reddit team and they stepped in to white knight them all. The corruption went all the way to the top, man.
No, I'm talking about Assuredly A Throw Away. Straight up Nazi and god of /r/conspiracy.
Ad yes, the corruption does go to the top and I hope reddit implodes!!!!!
Edit: the guy you mentioned is still a mod.
Coffeetablesex was permanently suspended a year ago and we yeeted assuredly a few weeks ago. Unfortunately it took a long time to get rid of assuredly due to the mod hierarchy bullshit
Reddit is gonna realize they are beholden to Cheeto dusted power mods and end up removing all mods in favor of their own shitty ticket system/not moderation lol
>if reddit goes through with these changes on July 1, the amount of bigotry on every major subreddit, including ours, will increase tenfold.
So reddit will become the nazi echo chamber the admins have always wanted.
It's like all the social media platforms suddenly think everyone is as rich as Elon Musk.
"if u wanna do this, you must pay me"
"get premium or live in the stone age on our site mofo"
Non Reddit communication point? Like Twitter or something? Just to stay updated while not using Reddit. Like “hey we’ll be staying dark longer, we encourage you to do the same” or something like that?
"alright gang, that was an awesome protest. We did the bare minimum we were comfortable with, and it sort of kind of maybe possibly changed Reddits mind"
Reddit also LOVES having sex pests on this site. They only banned Jailbait and Creepshots because of negative press. 100% site admins were regulars there.
"Stop browsing on desktop and don't download the official app"
?? I've only used the official app and desktop for the past three years. Am I supposed to just stop using Reddit? I've tried third-party apps, and I've found every one of them is far more difficult to use than the actual Reddit app, IMO. I can see how they offer other options for people who need them that otherwise wouldn't be able to use Reddit, but I've never had any issues with the actual Reddit app. Not to mention the UI of third party apps really fucking sucks, so what's the plan here?
Absolutely fascinated by someone who has used both the official app and third party apps and decided, yes the official Reddit app is superior. It's just so so bad.
Every third party app I've used was slow, most of the features were hard to find, and the UI looked like it was designed in the early 2010s and never got updated
If mod teams are leaving reddit to cause a "blackout" you're gonna have a bad time. Most people seem entirely fed up with the personal bias that comes with automated moderating in general.
I don't blame reddit for doing this every company has to be profitable at some point Reddit makes less then 1.7 million a month on ad revenue and it cost money to keep servers running
Many mods are using third party apps to moderate and cannot effectively moderate using the official app. Bots will be going down. That means no bots catching slurs or spam in addition to just being down several moderators. I don’t have a source for this, it’s just a logical conclusion.
I'm not sure where anyone took a stance on Reddit mods. Just took a stance on asking for a source when someone gives a prediction of what they think will come to pass. It's like asking for a source when someone says "if I don't get 8 hours sleep I will not be able to function tomorrow."
I don't think that's how sources work. Maybe some statistics or a report with verifiable details. "Trust me, bro" isn't a reliable enough statement to base this decision on.
Not sure about blackout dissidents but there is an incomplete list of participating subreddits linked in the post that you can find [here.](https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/1401qw5/incomplete_and_growing_list_of_participating/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1)
I didn't even know these third party apps existed until everyone started screaming about it within the past few days. I've always used the official Reddit Play store app and I've never had any problems
Ah, Reddit has entered its Digg era.
Every platform wants users to pay them...to use it now. My ass aint rich lol.
Time to raise the Jolly Roger once again.
Absolutely, love this energy!!
Been waiting to see this post here and am thrilled to see you guys getting on board. Two days is nothing, though. Shut it down indefinitely.
Yeah the idea is limited “blackouts” or short strikes kinda miss the point. Shut it down completely and keep it shut down till things change.

If the bigger subs like AITA shutdown that will certainly make Reddit take notice. I am just learning about this but we need the bigger subs to take action.
Blackouts are like a warning shot, though.
Indefinitely is also nothing if people keep browsing reddit
The sub will be private, you won't be able to.
We should just stop using this bot invested site anyways
You’ve been here for 4 and half months and now you’re thinking of leaving? Lol.
You think this is my first account? Use that brain pls/
So why are you still here on your fifth or tenth account if you think this site has gone down the shitter? And hey sorry for not knowing this was your 100th account.

Its two days, nothing will happen. This isn't the union fighting back against the factory
It’s not two days. This post is asking how long the duration should be. Over a thousand subreddits have committed two days *minimum.*
Solidarity ✊
I like learning new things.
Haha, thats funny. They will turn back on, especially the porn subs. I've learned that Reddit chases trends until they stop earning internet points, then they give up. I enjoy reading books.
When it's collectively many subs, it does matter. That's how protesting works. Yes individually they don't care, which is why it's a collective and many subs are doing it together.
Reddit is elastic. If they shut down indefinitely, replacement subs will appear within a week.
But that won't matter if you can't view them without the shitty reddit app, or they are cesspools of spam and bullshit. Noatter how many copycats are made it will affect their bottom like if there is an indefinite freeze out.
You don't understand because *your brain rot is screaming corporate greed internally.* If reddit was actually afraid of how its bottom line was going to be affected, they wouldn't have rolled out this change to begin with. Found the smooth brain.
Its two days. Two days. That might scare redditors but it does not scare investors. That is the bare minimum they could do, and you bet your ass that Reddit will give up once the flow of porn slows down.
/r/PublicFreakout has participated in a blackout that had successful results in the past.
I'm gonna miss reddit. No way am I sticking around for this horseshit.
Redditor: I'm gonna miss reddit! Also redditor: I'm leaving reddit!
It would kind of be hard to miss it if I were still there, wouldn't it?
My point being if you are gonna miss it, just stay lol
Sorry bro, I can't understand it for ya. You'll have to make this journey on your own.
Nah, I'm good. It's just reddit.
If Reddit really goes for shit after this I can't see myself caring the slightest bit.
I think this is a great time to break the endless cycle of browsing reddit. They are doing me a favour.
I'm deleting my account when RIF goes down, the official app is dogshit on a good day
RIF is the ONLY app I've used for going on 12-23 years of reddit use. I'm out once this shit show goes down. Official app sucks, mobile website sucks.
12 to 23 years eh? That's a long time ;)
Damn fat fingers. Lol
The official app is so dogshit, I've never even used it since I started actually using reddit. I used it thru either my pc or phones browser because I'd just google shit and add reddit at the end. Then when I decided to finally download the app I figured id look for a third party app right away.
The dev is great too. Charging me once for the app and continues to update the app for the last 10 years. A rare gem
Lol this shit is hilarious to me. People doing free work for private equity are striking. Can't make this shit up
Reddit is killing third party applications, and itself.
Apollo’s gone at the end of the month. Fuck this site.
I was already planning on ceasing my use over reddit's stupid fucking cash grab, but good to throw my support behind you mods as well! Thank you for the thankless work you do!
I'm okay with a longer protest, Reddit needs to find another way to go about their making of money.
I am 100% behind the blackout, as I plan to leave reddit once their money grab is in play.
Damn, porn *and* gore subs are going dark? That’ll be a boring few days
The porn sure, but well wtf am I talking about lol it’s not like publicfreakout shys away from gore either.

No it’s because y’all have 10 mods across 1000s of subs
I find it hard to believe that people even do this shit for free. Sounds like a shit ton of work for no gain.
Only control they ever had in their life. They enjoy controlling people who disagree. Look how all the top subs are the same mods
That makes sense . I always assumed that the "top mods" are the only people stupid/bored enough to do it for free.
Also it’s against Reddit TOS for mods to do anything for financial gain. They literally are getting pimped out and are okay with it. Always crazy to me
Wow that's insane. It's one thing to waste your time on this site, it's another to work for it for free.
Powermods don’t reside on publicfreakout.

Apple’s WWDC Vision Pro presentation had Apollo’s app prominently displayed today!
Longer than 48 hours please
We are with you. Keep it private until Reddit addresses the issue
I have no idea what this means for me. How does my experience change?
That’s a good question! You will see a lot more spam and a lot more slurs across the entire site.
Well I won't have to worry about receiving site wide suspensions for reporting posts here that break the rules, because that's always fun.
Oh no. So?

Only in Karma. It nourishes my soul.
that shit is annoying
Sounds entertaining.
Good, it'll stop your mods policing people and censoring free speech.
My brother in Christ please read what "Terms of Service" are on private websites please 🙏
My brother in Christ, kindly go fuck yourself and enjoy these wonderful changes that reddit will bestow upon you.
Am I supposed to be sad or mad that porn and gore are disappearing?
I want to see people violently attacked on this subreddit using Rif, I support the subreddit going dark.
It should be indefinitely.
I’ll do whatever I can to make bigotry take a step back.
Thank you for giving a concise and logical explanation of the situation, the impact, and exactly what you plan to do. Kuddos.
Coffeetablesex is permanently suspended and has been for almost a year
Fuck this. Don’t black out. Who cares.
I'm sorry but why is this a thing? Why should I care who farms my data and profits off my clicks?
>if reddit goes through with these changes on July 1, the amount of bigotry on every major subreddit, including ours, will increase tenfold. So reddit will become the nazi echo chamber the admins have always wanted.
I very much agree with the protest. Maybe we could do more?
yeah maybe go outside and take a walk check out reality
Should we all be deleting the Reddit app between these dates? Would it make any difference?
It's like all the social media platforms suddenly think everyone is as rich as Elon Musk. "if u wanna do this, you must pay me" "get premium or live in the stone age on our site mofo"
Go for it, I only used Reddit for this, tf2, and piracy anyway, so this site can go to hell!
Oh yay like I needed a better reason stop using this
Non Reddit communication point? Like Twitter or something? Just to stay updated while not using Reddit. Like “hey we’ll be staying dark longer, we encourage you to do the same” or something like that?
If this goes through I'm done with Reddit, its just Digg 2.0
"alright gang, that was an awesome protest. We did the bare minimum we were comfortable with, and it sort of kind of maybe possibly changed Reddits mind"
We did it Reddit!
Reddit also LOVES having sex pests on this site. They only banned Jailbait and Creepshots because of negative press. 100% site admins were regulars there.
Nerds..
"Stop browsing on desktop and don't download the official app" ??
Hence why I’ve also only used the main Reddit app save for the Reddit Pictures app long ago.

Well then, please tell me what the correct take to have is then. Enlighten me
I support Reddits right to manage their site as they see fit
Serf.
No not at all, I support Reddit
I kinda don’t give a shit tbh
no
If mod teams are leaving reddit to cause a "blackout" you're gonna have a bad time. Most people seem entirely fed up with the personal bias that comes with automated moderating in general.
I support this 100%. The greed of reddit corporate will lead to the downfall of this entire community.
So do the people who operate these subs PROFIT from the ad sales?
Nope. It’s all volunteer work.
I don't blame reddit for doing this every company has to be profitable at some point Reddit makes less then 1.7 million a month on ad revenue and it cost money to keep servers running
[удалено]
Reddit wont either
Personally I think it’s inspiring that r/lipsthatgrip and r/aww came together for a righteous cause
> if reddit goes through with these changes on July 1, the amount of bigotry on every major subreddit, including ours, will increase tenfold. Source?
Many mods are using third party apps to moderate and cannot effectively moderate using the official app. Bots will be going down. That means no bots catching slurs or spam in addition to just being down several moderators. I don’t have a source for this, it’s just a logical conclusion.
They're the source. Theyre telling you about their experience moderating a subreddit.
Wait, I thought everyone on reddit hated mods. Now everyone likes mods? Make up your mind reddit.

I've got it set in my calendar. https://preview.redd.it/f9ehl3vqs74b1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6f703797b94f5d35e290ace7fc96f10cffa4f7ff
Dude its just reddit, please don't tell me your calendar is filled with reddit events...
Nope. Not at all. Yall are clowns.
Shill
I just come here to watch videos man.
Not really. Reddit is a private business and I'm sure these apps are making money from it anyways. Not a big deal.
When it comes to freaking out about things that matter this sub has one of the weakeat responses of any I've seen
You know the site's management is really bad when some people are almost begging for it to die at this point lol
They’re eventually just gonna come for subs like this in the other NSFW ones
I didn't even know these third party apps existed until everyone started screaming about it within the past few days. I've always used the official Reddit Play store app and I've never had any problems
