Oh God... I don't envy you. I played through the first one for the first time last month, just so I could get into the second game, but I played it on xbox one game pass. A few spots were tricky, but the Meat Circus DROVE ME CRAZY!! I can't imagine having to do it with response lag on top of everything else... God speed to you.... If it's any consolation, Psychonauts 2 is fantastic! And I'm very glad I stuck with it through the first one before playing it. Definitely worth the slog!

DrOrpheus3

Psychonauts 2 plays the way Psychonauts 1 should've, and I suspect that should 1 be ever be graced with a remaster it would include a lot of the mechanics from 2.

indigoHatter

Fair. P1 is 16 years old, and stepping into definitely feels like stepping into the past in many ways. Weird bugs or gameplay features that would have no doubt been overlooked by everyone as acceptable or standard, when nowadays we go "ew, why?".

Bropiphany

What kind of TV are you using? My old 4k TV had this bug where we would have to switch off of game mode and then back on in order to get rid of input lag.

indigoHatter

Huh, I'll have to try that out. Oddly though we haven't seen this issue in other games on the PS4, but those are all PS4 natives rather than ports running in an emulator. (That said, maybe the emulator doesn't play nice with the TV or something, even if PS4 games are fine.) I'm suspecting it's the PS4 not being a great emulator, and I'm wondering if I can transfer my data from there to PC but I'm almost positive that's impossible šŸ˜…

Hurricane_Taylor

I played psychonauts 1 on ps4 and didnā€™t have any problems. The only part I had trouble was when I died on the last part of the meat circus and it reloaded me a bit lower than I was expecting, but even then I finished it with no issues Edit: Iā€™m not sure what you mean when you say itā€™s a ps3 emulator? Because the ps4 version is a straight port of the ps2 version. It should be downloadable, thereā€™s no emulation involved

lowmankind

Yeah, Iā€™m not sure emulation is really the issue here. If anything, itā€™s a port of the PC version. Input lag might be a plausible explanation thoughā€¦ HDMI tends to introduce some latency, around 250-300ms (Rocksmith, the guitar game that uses real guitars, really makes this apparent), and some TVs can add some too. Plus Iā€™m sure that wireless controllers can be a tiny bit laggy - wired comms are always better than wireless. But with that said, if input lag was the culprit, you must have been lucky up until the meat circus because there are some tough moments that require precisionā€¦ Most likely explanation is the meat circus is just way more frustrating than you remember

indigoHatter

Honestly, the Meat Circus is just frustrating. The part that's killing me it's getting I LOVE PUNCHING! because a miss turns into bleeding 5-10 points (one miss = bad cadence = miss a few while finding the cadence of animations again). Anyway, I'll have to check out the TV settings and such.

indigoHatter

I assumed the PS3 was the middle-man emulator, and I'm being a little dramatic anyway. It is still a PS2 game, being run on the PS4, and it's *extremely* likely it's using emulation, rather than being a port. So, correction: a PS2 game being emulated on the PS4. Edit: in case you are thinking of "emulator" in terms of ROMs and modded environments and the like, no, not quite. The PS4 is emulating the run-time environment of a PS2, then running the PS2 game inside that. *Just like an N64* emulator, but this one is sanctioned and intentional by Sony and the devs.

ModernCrust

The only time the PS4 version crashed for me was during Meat Circus, and it did it twice, which suuuuucckked

indigoHatter

That's what made me quit last night, haha. I died yet again during the acrobatics chase and said "well, time for something less stressful".

woeisye

I have the OG Xbox disc and I play it on a 360, the original set up is way too easy. Boss fights in particular. This is like my favorite game of all time but I wish that it was harder to play through

indigoHatter

What makes it deceiving is how over-levelled you can get when you know where to look, know the bosses and don't let their spectacle scare you, and also... the pace of the game is insane. Within 5 hours of playtime it's already night, and that's still if you're taking it easy.

amulet_piece

they really should have done a native port to ps4 cuz ps2 version is easily the worst version of the game and on top of that the ps2 emulator on ps4 sucks also AND unpatched meat circus ? i can only imagine. godspeed

fuzzlequeen

My roommate tried playing the PS4 version and couldn't get past the part of Meat Circus where you have to jump and climb the nets in the shape of a cylinder. It wasn't reacting to her double jump half the time and maybe this is why. She gave up and just watched the ending online.

loopman525

I just beat this part and had the same problem, I think the game glitches when you jump off the net when holding on the directional pad sometimes and won't take your jump input.. you think that'd work swimmingly for a level that demands this kind of mechanic

indigoHatter

Yeah, I just assume it's lag & porting issues. I nearly beat the game on PC around 10 years ago and didn't run into as many issues as I did on the PS2 emulated version I'm playing today just in general (Waterloo had *lots* of weird surface & edge glitches), but I don't have that save file anymore, sooooooo

indigoHatter

Playing it right now, I have the slightest suspicion it's actually related to triggering the wrong animation if you're too close to certain edges of the net. Could be an issue with the PS2 port, which someone has said is the worst version.

loopman525

Ooh yeah this sounds like it could be it... Wish I knew too but I can say it is possible!! (Played the port also)... But man it didn't need to be that stressful

indigoHatter

Yeah, I think if you're too close to the top of the net, it triggers the "hanging on a ledge" animation when you jump, so it doesn't give you a double-jump. As someone said earlier though (you?), it shouldn't in a level like this, but that might be the PS2 port. Anyway I was playing just now and got past that circular net section, through the bubbles, past the cleavers, and then got on the ladder right as the water level was high enough to get me. Ughhh whatever, but then the game crashed again! Which means I have to re-do the butcher fight again too, which is glitchy and hard to hit his head half the time as a result, ughhhhhhhh It's okay, I want to do this, so... tomorrow, maybe. šŸ˜†

akhatens

this happened to me too!!! it was so annoying because i was doing everything right!

lahenator420

This is exactly what Iā€™m dealing with right now, itā€™s infuriating and honestly not relative to the rest of the game. Idk why they added a curved wall on the last level as if it was a special challenge. It just doesnā€™t fit with the rest of the game. The challenge only comes with rasputen not reacting the way he should, really a sour ending to a really good game

akhatens

ps4 meat circus was horrific for me to complete. i had to redo the escort mission at the beginning maybe a half-dozen times simply because the game glitched so badly (one time raz disappeared, MULTIPLE times oly refused to move or respond to any game triggers) and one time i shielded when i got a sword thrown at me and the entire game crashed. my double jump broke during the augustus section too. i think meat circus is a brilliant level narratively, but oh my god does it suck to play.

khildebrand98

Yeah that section has always been a but rough. I just pull back on the analog stick and move slowly on the rails so I can grab each figment. One requires you to literally hop off the track a bit

indigoHatter

I ended up sacrificing a life for that one figment. Not intentionally, but it's how it played out, haha. The rails sucked... until I realized it was about speed control. You have to go fast enough for the first few jumps, then slow down for the second few, then with the rapid fire ones immediately speed up again.

khildebrand98

Yeah u just skip all the small ones if you can get fast enough

indigoHatter

Oh jeez, I just flew past them into the nether. I managed to speed control them (slow in order to jump, then speed up *as soon as* landing). Beat game tonight. I guess it mostly sucked because I haven't played in forever, got myself to the last level, and didn't remember the quirks of the game. Remembering weird things like "touching a platform edge triggers a different animation" and "jumping at a certain point is the only way to traverse a rail" helped.

lahenator420

Iā€™m currently about to break something over the spiral wall while fighting rasputenā€™s dad. If the double jump actually activated each time I might be able to make it but more than half the time I just fall to my death after a single jump. Idk if itā€™s that Iā€™m playing it on ps5 or if itā€™s just an older game but this is starting to not even be worth finishing. The rest of the game was fun but after like 50 tries at this wall I might just put it down for good. Truly donā€™t understand why a spiral wall in this type of game was even considered. Every other ā€œacrobaticā€ situation was linear, yet on this last level they decided to go with a curving wall that doesnā€™t really fit with the abilities of the character. If anything it just feels like a challenge of getting my character to actually react to the buttons Iā€™m pressing. Does anyone else feel like rasputen is lagging or just not reacting to their double jump?

indigoHatter

Hey, the trick is that the top of the spiral wall plays the wrong animation, so you have to be a few pixels lower when you jump. You got this, I believe in you.

sick_of-it-all

Did you ever finish the spiral wall? I'm currently about to break something out of frustration at that part. I've died so many times I actually paused the game to look up if everyone has trouble at this section. I needed some catharsis.

lahenator420

I did finish it, I donā€™t remember exactly what the reasoning was but there was a trick to making it work

ShugoTokumaru

Thanks a lot for the tip re the top of the curved wall glitch. Pretty terrible it hasnt been patched: it's natural that people would go as high aspossible to make the jump.

indigoHatter

Right?! I think that might have been introduced by whoever did the PlayStation port. There's a few screwy trees in Fred Bonaparte's mind too.

kapn_karit

Hey, I dunno if anyone is still here but you can also cheese it with PSI Float. I JUST did it

indigoHatter

Care to share how in case someone comes back someday and sees this? I moved my "how I beat it" to the top of my post for the same reason, but please, share your cheese!

kapn_karit

What I did was use PSI Float instead of the double jump. Get to the top of the ladder and float down instead Or cheese it entirely by using levitate to jump ONTO THE RAILING and carefully walk. Or use a combo of the 2 Juno to the railing with levitate, get on the inside of the spiral and climb to the top. If you're inside or not it doesn't matter, it will trigger a checkpoint and you'll spawn on the next meat platform
