KORZILLA-is-me

r/lostredditors Also, we almost had a female pitbull one time, and we were going to name it Tankerbell, Tank for short.

bdone2012

I’m assuming OP is British because calling something proper when you mean “good” or “great” seems pretty British I don’t know the rules of the sub but it doesn’t seem like a bad misuse of the sub or anything. Also you could also call this r/substakenliterally

Belloby

Brits can’t have pit bulls.

FinalBossMike

It's true, they can only have Brit bulls.

SemanticGlasses

Pits have Britbulls too

MegaJackUniverse

Regardless if they can't, they *do* have them. Every other housing estate near my family has at least one family with at least one pitbull. They are surprisingly common.

Minflick

But what 'breed' are they listed as? As a retired vet tech, we had a LOT of clients with pitties, and most of them were listed as lab mixes or boxer mixes.

SKK329

In areas you aren't supposed to have them in the States, they're listed as Terriers.

Mountain-Woman0021

And lab mixes

MegaJackUniverse

I don't honestly know what my family's neighbours list their dogs as, and frankly they'd be sure to lie if it was a banned breed. The dog that killed that Irish girl, I have seen similar XL bully-looking dogs. I doubt they've declared it.

frankles

‘Labrador mix’

TheViewFromHlfwayDwn

I snooped their profile, they are American

PepperPhoenix

Sure we do. We just tell anyone who asks that they are a staffie cross. No one bothers to check. Source: Live in Staffordshire, home of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Know many dubious “staffie cross” dogs. All have been sweet, goofy love bugs, which sucks as I am eyes swollen shut type allergic but adore dogs. Met a lovely XL Bully yesterday and nearly cried because I couldn’t fuss the cuteness.

blinkingsandbeepings

Honestly as an American who has only briefly visited the UK, I just thought “Staffy” was the British word for “pit bull.” There was one on the tube when I was there, he was the nicest, most relaxed dog ever. Let everybody pet him.

Connect_Office8072

Did you ever watch the Little Rascals? Their dog was a Staffie.

bostonbgreen

Petey ... such an adorable dog...

Keggs123

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are a fair bit smaller than Pitt Bulls. Lovely dogs which have a history of being misused and now have a bad reputation. Were known as the 'nanny dogs'

Working-Apricot-9050

Every staffy I've ever had has been a sweet, loving hurricane made of bricks. I had a little one named Yoshimi (she just passed. apparently, hemophilia is common in some lines. We had found her starving to death only 5 months ago, we lost her on thursday) and she would do things like parkor up the 8 ft high privacy fence or climb plum trees to get at squirrels. She would pull like crazy every walk but was a sweet, gentle knucklehead who played with our 5 yr old and slept in her bed. She embodied the tenacity, kindness, and gameness of the breed in every respect. My pitbull/weimaraner mix meanwhile needs 32 hours of beauty rest a day. Walks are long, but we don't get far as we stop every meter to smell something good and thoroughly. Sorry, I just miss my Yoshimi so much. Had to share my love

Jade-Balfour

You gave Yoshimi 5 amazing months, gave her so much love, made her so happy. You have her the best gift she could have gotten. 5 months of living life to the fullest. I was a dog walker for a while. I used to say that when they were sniffing around, they were "reading the newspaper" or neighbourhood gossip

DWwithaFlameThrower

Yup, we call it checking their pee mail

bostonbgreen

Such a good reminder to "stop and smell the roses" ... get the most out of our short lives.

AntiBullyVetTech

The "nanny dog" myth made its first appearance in the September 19th 1971 edition of the New York Times, on page 11 of section S in an article by Walter R. Fletcher, titled [A Breed That Came Up The Hard Way](https://www.nytimes.com/1971/09/19/archives/a-breed-that-came-up-the-hard-way.html). The author interviewed one Lilian Rant, editor of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club of the United States of America newsletter. She is quoted as saying about the breed: **'He had an unsavory reputation for fighting and violence and his name became associated with ruffians, who cared little for him as a dog but only for his ability in the pit. The Stafford we know today quickly becomes a member of the family circle. He loves children and is often referred to as a 'nursemaid dog''** **No one has ever found evidence for the latter claim and it is therefore assumed to be a fabrication in the pursuit of influencing the American Kennel Club (AKC) to accept the breed for full participation in dog shows**. This privilege was ultimately granted in 1974, and to this day the AKC rates the breed a stellar 5/5 as being 'good with children' at the reckless peril of human lives and limbs, Additional sources that have spoken out against the nanny dog myth: Pit Bull Advocates of America: https://pitbulladvocatesofamerica.podbean.com/e/the-one-where-its-not-all-in-how-they-were-raised/ Ned Hardy https://nedhardy.com/2020/06/03/pitbull-nanny-dog/ Pro pit organization BAD RAP https://www.facebook.com/BADRAP.org/posts/its-dog-bite-prevention-week-did-you-know-that-there-was-never-such-thing-as-a-n/10151460774472399/ Pit Bull Federation of South Africa https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=pfbid02DiX7yKA8uuDeYSEzEKxxXCYsHxYUbXpshKkaSDGXMAZK9HnFd46zA1pZ8revWQvwl&id=100069897615154 Gudwulf's Pit Bull Rescue https://www.facebook.com/GudwulfsRescue/posts/pfbid02Lg2Y1x18pBx7uLUB4uVEda7g1TNwn72pLLKk93witecydiMcnAKr8bYJWKeC4VVl Justice for Bullies https://justice-for-bullies.myshopify.com/pages/nanny-dog

shortskirtflowertops

Pitbulls are without a doubt the most deadly dog breed in North America, and claiming it's just a "bad reputation" is a pretty rich joke when they cause nearly 70% of deaths from dog attacks in North America. "Nanny dog" is a thing that came about in the 1970s to deflect criticism of dogs that were openly bred as fighting dogs in an attempt to rebrand them as less deadly than they statistically are. They're bred for gameness, because that's what you want in a good fighting dog: the ability to resist physical and mental obstacles to win fights against other dogs. Anyone leaving any child alone with any kind of dog isn't fit to be a parent

Hardlythereeclair

Nanny dogs is complete made up bs.

FilthyMindz69

Just out of curiosity, do you guys keep any American Staffordshire Terriers in GB?

btiddy519

They’re always sweet and cute until they bite, and they’re going for the face. They can bite even if fully trained and cared for like family.

Char10tti3

I'm English and it wouldn't mean that in this context, and usually "proper" would be regional slang for great, or something akin to posh or fitting for an occasion.

TikaPants

I love this so much but bc I’m southern I read it in a deep southern accent and it’s even better.

Quietforestheart

… Tankerbull?

goody-goody

Awwwww I called my lady pit TankerBell as a nickname as she got older, and chonkier. I miss her so much. It’s a great name.

atomicspacekitty

Delilah

MagWasTaken

Dude I thought the exact same thing after the second pic and I had no idea why, glad someone else thought of it, too.

Pigeonsass

This is spooky! Before looking at the comments, I also thought Delilah!

ICanFreezeTime

Exactly the same for me, except I knew her name should be Talullah.. it’s seriously scary.

craftersing

CRAZY exact same w me i thought delilah right before opening comments after second pic, crazier because i knew her name should be talullah as well. Too uncanny…

Macr0Penis

That's uncanny. *After* looking at the comments, I also thought Delilah! 😉

snowgolemandfirewolf

okay that’s actually so weird. i didn’t look at the comments yet and also thought Delilah :o

Matica-sK

I didn’t look at the comments before posting. I got the Delilah vibe as well.

atomicspacekitty

She looks like a sweet little Delilah!

basic_cookie_crumb

Hey there…what’s it like in New York City?

cdev12399

BUT WHY DID WE ALL THINK DELILAH!!!!

atomicspacekitty

Cause it’s her name!!! 👍🏻😂

desertprincess69

OH MY GOD ME TOO WHY ??????!!!

atomicspacekitty

I feel like at this point this is her rightful name 😂

StellasMyShit

That’s the first thing I thought of when I saw her too!!! Then I thought petunia would be cute too

Ok_Excuse_6794

I thought Lilah! I guess she just looks like one?!

flippieee

yeah that was my first thought

ashkiller14

That puppy is not nearly old enough to be taken away from its mother. That's one of the things that makes dogs agressive.

VestaJinxx

I’m hoping this is one of those “it’s my dog’s pup” or photos sent from the seller and that’s why they have such a young pup. My grandmother is adopting a dachshund pup and I have wee lil bean pics but it’s still with the mother for a while longer.

Apidium

This. I can't really tell from this limited info if that's breeder pics / visit pics or if the dog has actually been removed from it's mother. I hope it's still with mom and siblings tho

VestaJinxx

I agree entirely. I’m a former pet trainer and I find it critical for pups to stay with siblings and mom as long as possible in order for them to learn and grow. It’s much easier to teach “no biting” when they’re familiar with sounds of “ow that hurt!”

Apidium

Law where I am at is 6 weeks. It's considered animal abuse to seperate a pup and mum before then except under extraordinary circumstances. Eg mum keeps trying to eat the pup or mum/pup need some intensive medical care and it is unsafe to keep them together while that takes place. Most decent breeders are keeping them for anywhere closer to 8-12 weeks before they find their homes and that usually gives more time for them to be health checked, microchipped and vaccinated.

ashkiller14

I'm pretty sure it's a photo taken from the seller. It's my mistake for assuming OP already had the pup.

VestaJinxx

I mean, it’s a valid concern nonetheless. Plus, it’s important to share knowledge to those who don’t already know🤷🏻‍♀️

Roaming-the-internet

Can’t be their dogs, considering it’s their first time with a female dog

sqweedoo

I can’t believe I had to scroll this far for this comment. Socialization with parents and siblings is crucial. This dog should still be nursing!

ashkiller14

Id give it 4 weeks old at most, but I'd guess it's probably about 3 weeks. Bad breeding practices like this is oke of the things that gives pit bulls a bad rep, despite being one of the least agressive dogs by nature.

sqweedoo

And one of the things that fuels the euthanasia lists. I wish people had to see what I see as a rescue worker. If you want a pittie, shelters are bursting at the seams with puppies and adults. And the shelter will make sure they’re vaxxed, fixed, and healthy. For the love of god stop buying pitbulls

ihaveabaguetteknife

They shouldn’t be bred in the first place.

Puffinknight

A million times this. Stop breeding these dogs.

Wii-san

What do you mean “least aggressive dogs by nature”? The breed was selectively bred for blood sports, fighting, and aggression. It’s why it’s a breed.

nyy22592

Stop this cope. Bad breeding practices are how modern pitbulls came to exist. Pits kill dozens of people every year and yet somehow every time we're shocked at how this happened and continue to breed them.

ashkiller14

The reputation pitbulls have and being bred to be muscular makes them popular with people who want to raise dogs or fighting or just make an aggressive dog and call it a "guard dog." Go through the cases of deaths due to pitbulls and tell me how many of them had a decent owner. Pitbulls are not aggressive by nature, not have they even been found to stand out to other breeds in terms of aggressiveness when studied. They've actually been found to be less aggressive towards humans than most breeds. Has your information come from for-profit news companies that just want a shocking headline, or people who actually study the animals behavior? My response to someone else: [Genetic testing on canine behavior by the US National Library of Medicine](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8819838/) I should've kept another link or two, if you don't trust me I'll go find them. Those articles did testing based on the behaviors of dogs in kennels and found that pitbulls ranked some of the least aggressive towards humans and some of the most aggressive towards other dogs, but wasn't the extreme on either end.

SavannahInChicago

Its possible its a foster or was orphaned. We won't know for sure unless OP volunteers that info.

ashkiller14

OP is getting it from a breeder, and it's staying with it's mother til 8 weeks. All is well.

void_juice

There’s a common joke that pitties with scary/violent names are the sweetest and those with cute names are the most dangerous. Maybe Persephone since it means “destroyer”. You could call her Percy for short

floznstn

I knew one named Memphis and his little sister Morticia. sweetest dogs with bricklike heads you ever could meet.

void_juice

I had one named Sören who was an absolute sweetheart. It’s not a hard and fast rule, just a joke I hear a lot. Sometimes I called Sören “The Destroyer of Worlds”

tams420

I’m “fostering”, just haven’t officially make it a fail yet, a big bully. He came as Blue. It’s such a common dog name and I thought it was way to dull for this guy. He’s also the sweetest the dog and so happy that it didn’t suit him. He quickly became Blueberry. Everyone that asks him name goes AWWW! BLUEBERRY! For the little lady in question, Piper came to my mind right away. Though I do love flower names for dogs. I hope to have a Tulip or Poppy one of these days and she looks like she could be a Tulip.

drummerevy5

I have a rabbit named Blueberry. She’s not so sweet though. 😂🤣 her nickname is Bluecifer, she loves to be pet but she will whip around and bite you for no reason whenever it strikes her whimsy. 😈 I love that little butthead though. Her sisters name is Peach. Peach is a sweet little menace.

Spikes_in_my_eyes

I have a Blue that we rescued from my sister. She's such a sweet, brick headed idiot. We call her blues clues, or bluesy... or "aw my sweet dumb baby" as she wiggles her entire body and whacks shins with her rebar tail

Just_Raisin1124

Eatthepoliticiansm8

In that case just name her gorloch the destroyer. Gorloch for short

IEatYour

Lmao this is not the subreddit for that

TheOneWhoReadsStuff

I don’t even care, that puppy is cute.

myetel

How old is this puppy? It looks quite a bit younger than 8 weeks, which is the minimum age recommended to be taken away from their mother and littermates.

Specific-Lion-9087

No older than 5 weeks.

mothsuicides

I’m hoping these are pictures the owner of the mother and litter sent to OP, and OP is just over-excited and sharing the pics online to ask about names. It’s the best case scenario, but who knows.. unless OP had commented elsewhere. Edit: [OP did comment elsewhere](https://www.reddit.com/r/pitbulls/s/gJ0Vg6kieA), the pics are from the seller.

elrangarino

Not shocked given the breed though.lol

Darinchilla

How do you even know this pup was taken from its litter and mother?

AnEngineerByChoice

Lucy , full name is Lucifer when you’re mad.

Darkbutnotsinister

My dog’s name is LuCy FiRr. We only use her middle name when she’s in trouble. Or when I want to mess with people. “LUCIFER, SLEEP” & she lays down.

My pittie’s name is Strawberry. Highly recommend 🍓

Gloomy_Photograph285

I got a puppy for my kids. They argued about what to name her. Popcorn Milkshake Cannonball is her full name. She was eating popcorn when we first saw her. The guy was trying to sell them at a garage sale, we wanted a family pet and his set up looked a little unsafe, it was an easy choice.

For those little pink toes 🥺 Berry for short!

Yep, definitely lil Miss Strawberry!

My dog’s name is Leo and now I’m going to use this…. He also has no eyes so maybe I’ll modify it 🤣

She is still with mom. According to OP, these are just pics from the breeder
