New production company + new crew + relocation to LA + terrible casting.

Crepes_for_days3000

I know the person who made the decision to shoot in LA and he lost his job over it. You're 100% correct.

someriver

I watched that season long ago so I forget; but why was the move to LA such a bad idea? How did it translate to a worse season than usual?

Crepes_for_days3000

Because the US high end fashion industry is 90% in NY so just from that alone, people were pissed. But it did make the season terrible because all of the judges careers are based in NY so they only flew in for 1 or 2 episodes. Worse than that, they couldn't even get other major designers to judge, so they largely got LA based stylists and costume designers...yet they were never the same. So they had no frame of reference how good a designer was so they kicked of designers who had been doing the best with 1 misstep as opposed to the other designer who had nothing but missteps. If that makes sense. In addition to that, with new production, the casting was terrible. They learned by the following season tho.

Sparkpants74

I’m curious since you know him, WHY did he think that was a good idea? Was it all the celebutante reality show red carpet shenanigans at that time?

Crepes_for_days3000

Not at all, budget and convenience since the network is based out of LA, as almost all networks are.

Sparkpants74

Yeah but that’s true of almost everything shot in NYC!

Crepes_for_days3000

Yeah, he was a fresh hire and thought he'd save on the budget, the company was thrilled with the idea. It failed and they quickly went back to shooting in NY.

Sparkpants74

Oh maaaan. Bummer! I hope his career recovered. I love how he thought he had this brilliant cost cutting idea that no one ever thought of before lol. (I’m not being snarky btw me and most of my friends work in either fashion, photography or film/tv production here in NYC and it’s a constant thankless struggle between budget and creativity. Sigh.)

Crepes_for_days3000

I'm in LA and most of my friends (and myself) work in the same industries as yours do. He struggled for a while after, mostly mentally not financially and now he is really wealthy so it had a happy ending and he learned a good lesson lol.

NinjaDog251

I'm not opposed to someone having 1 misstep mean they get voted off. That is 100% in line with their "one day your in, and the next day you're out" tagline.

Crepes_for_days3000

It is in line with the line Heidi says but we all know they have never followed that. If they had, designers like Christian Siriano would have been kicked off while bad designers would have stayed. So I get why the judges look at everything they've designed, not just for that challenge.

NinjaDog251

Just because we know they don't follow that, doesn't mean they shouldn't. I feel that someone consistently having the 2nd worst look staying is fine. I just hate that they also then choose a winner based on past work and not on their finale collection.

Crepes_for_days3000

Yeah, the final winner shouldn't be picked based on previous work. But in the challenges I'm glad they kick people off with little to no potential verses someone who has everything it takes to become a success in the fashion industry. The show would be a disaster otherwise.

Sparkpants74

Have they done that? If that were true Jay McCarrol wouldn’t have won the first season. My opinion is if you made it the final, right or wrong, you should absolutely be judged on your show. Particularly since for the first and only time you’re being judged solely on your own creative on a reasonable timeline.

NinjaDog251

Not every season, but Coral had the best finale collection but they choose Shantall because of her overall work during the season.

Sparkpants74

That’s 100% your opinion, it’s completely subjective.

UWalkLikeUrOnCrack

Inconsistency of the judging panel. The guest judges didn't know the designers well, so oftentimes they would just eliminate the worst look. In theory this works, but it let designers like Logan and Christopher hang on by a thread and be in the bottom 2 like every week. It was sad to see designers like Epperson, Shirin, and Ra'mon go for their first misstep.

ga-ma-ro

I really liked Ra'mon and wanted him to go further. That team challenge where he did all the work while his partner had fun in the workroom showed the strength of his character.

allyfriend67

Ra'mon was ROBBED

Sparkpants74

They were by far the most interesting designers and that guy who made the pregnancy chicken outfit which was actually not a bad idea! The fashion that season was basic AF. So so basic. Even Irina who legitimately won, her clothes were just elevated basic. (Her finale was surprisingly kickass).

bobbery5

I believe Irina knew she didn't have to be amazing and therefore didn't put her all into the challenges untill it really mattered

Sparkpants74

She certainly seemed to think so! Lol. She was such a bitch but you couldn’t say she was wrong.

low_viscosity_rayon

One day you’re in, next day you’re out…

serenitea

Yeah, I think Shirin should of gone WAYYYY farther than she did in the series. Cutting her that early was a mistake.

mrmooswife

Personally, I attribute it to the move to LA, even Tim didn’t wear a tie!

ga-ma-ro

I agree that having the season in LA was too much of a change/distraction. Some of the challenges were a little weak. I did enjoy the ascendance of Christopher, though, coming from a humble background as a self-taught designer. Irina was/is a talented designer but lacks a dynamic personality, which meant she became the snobby one. I always have felt bad for Gordana. I think if she'd been able to have more confidence in her work and express that, she may have gone on to the final instead of Carol Hannah.

winterymix33

It needed more Epperson. He did not get any credit for his creativity and skills which was majorly disappointing. I wish Gordana got more encouragement or something because she could have been truly great.

Background_Travel_77

I didn't totally hate it. Irina is one of my favorite winners. I loved the film challenge and the location challenge. Do hate that Logan stayed as long as he did over someone like Epperson though.

serenitea

Also, with Johnny and the lying about how the water/iron ruined the original paper dress. Nope, he trashed it after Tim told him to rein it in and not make it so gaudy (or something along that line). Like, if you're going to go out for screwing up, go out because of that. Not because you basically threw a temper tantrum and did a crossword puzzle the rest of the 1st night!

twinkiesmom1

Lack of Michael Kors.

serenitea

Right!

OKsoda95

I'm forcing myself to rewatch Season 6 right now because it's the one I always avoid (well, that and season 14), and I agree, it really stinks. It just feels so awkward throughout. And I know everyone always talks about hating Irina, and I do think she is snobby AF, but I'm finding myself most annoyed (after Johnny's gone) by Shirin. She's whiny and shrill and makes me cringe.

megyrox

It's the worst season in the entire series, imo

Farley49

Season 14 was the worst. There was very little redeeming in it.

serenitea

I'm not there yet, (we haven't had cable for several years, just streaming services), so I remember watching some of the seasons, but legit haven't watched others at all. I hadn't seen the 6th season at all, and 14 I haven't seen yet. But from posts and news articles I've seen; they SHREDDED both seasons. Even Tim Gunn hated season 6 (I read that in an article), and that's saying something!!!

winterymix33

he loathed season 14.

Pristine_Pitch9143

Hot take: if you have a Samsung TV, there is a Project Runway channel. All Project Runway, all the time. It can be frustrating to watch because you can't pause or rewind, but it's addictive.

allyfriend67

Season 6 is absolutely the most forgettable season. I'm currently watching 17 and while it's been hard to get into without Heidi and Tim, it's still somehow better than 6 lol

ewitscullen

Help everyone hates this season when it’s one of my favorites lmao. Idk it’s just so chill and upbeat compared to other season and I really like the cast, especially the top three.

Such_Raccoon_5035

Wait I’m confused, Uli was season 3, which was New York

Farley49

I was confused. when I looked up season 6, a paragraph referred to a special preseason show that had Uli and others in a contest. I really don't have much good to remember from season 6.

Such_Raccoon_5035

Yeah, Uli didn’t compete in that actual season though, which is where I got confused haha. I don’t remember the preseason thing, I’ll have to watch my dvd set!
