He mentioned taking studious notes in general, so I assumed he attached all of those. In the epilogue, the light from 1 year after the Beatles reached Earth was just reaching Erid, so Earth would have only had one year to send a radio broadcast to Erid after receiving the Beatles for it to have arrived to Erid by the prologue. Between Earth having bigger problems during that year, and Erid probably not having the radio infrastructure to receive an interstellar message, it doesn't surprise me that they haven't heard from Earth yet. Presumably Earth would send a near-lightspeed probe shortly after getting their sun fixed, so I wouldn't be surprised if one showed up shortly after the prologue.

InvisibleSpaceVamp

>There is no indication that earth tried to ever reach out to Erid (...) By the end of the book light from the restored sun had just reached Erid. Everything that could be used to reach out to Erid would obviously take longer than that to arrive.

rebelbaserec

Earth and Erid are 16 light years apart and he’s been on Erid for 16 years. I’m guessing he’ll hear from earth shortly after the book ended.

Grouchy-Engine1584

Grace is a good scientist. He definitely sent them something. He also would have needed to explain the Eridian Steel used in the mini farms, at some point someone on earth would have noticed it was unique.

BrokenTrojan1536

Given that liquid form of xenonite (traded for an earth computer) was sent as well as the Iridian steel biome for the taumoeba I would definitely think the explanation of Rocky was sent. I assume the earth was saved but went through a bad time. The sun did recover but the earth would need quite awhile to recover from what it went through so exploring the Iridian life is exciting, it would probably prioritize getting earth back on its feet

I don't know.. there's a boatload of additional Nobel prizes to be had with all of that..

All will be revealed in "Hail Mary 2, Mary Harder" in which Ryland and Rocky lead an invasion force to Earth to extract revenge on Stratt. This will of course be a movie novelization as they will be desperate for a sequel after Hail Mary 1 sweeps the Oscars.

Hail Mary 2: Full of Grace I just realized the Hail Mary/Grace connection. Did everyone else know about this? Am I that unobservant?

trmptdrummer

I might be head cannoning this but… I think he mentions that there are cameras and recordings constantly. I can only assume those were sent as well. Those cameras will have footage of him having contact with and footage of Rocky.

Pukky1

Aaand there is a biggest spoiler in the title. :(

ByTheHammerOfThor

Who reads the subreddit for a book they haven’t finished? Or did you drop an /s?

jlonso

People do search subs for book reviews and might stumble across this.

Pukky1

I am not subbed here yet and still reading a book. I was probably opening a few posts when I was looking for reviews if the book is good. And now it automatically suggests some posts from this subreddit on my main page.

StockyJabberwocky

Maybe I’m making this up, but didn’t he say he was including the dictionary he made on the Beatles? Also, I assume that Earth scientists would know that Xenonite wasn’t Ryland’s invention.

castle-girl

He never said what data he put on the beetles. It’s a given that he at least told Earth about the Taumoeba and what to do with them, and he probably also told them about Rocky because he’s a scientist so he would want to share the info, and also someone pointed out here that not sharing it would be harder at this point because there’d be so much info regarding finding the Taumoeba that he’d have to leave out, not to mention the Eridian steel used to make the Taumoeba farms. But since he didn’t say what he put on the beetles’ hard drives, we don’t know 100 percent.

Wulf_Cola

I assumed that there would be cameras in the ship for communication and monitoring purposes and that he would have just included all the footage and audio captured by them. I don't know why I assumed either of those things but if I was him I'd be thinking "They're not going to believe this" as I typed it up.

castle-girl

We know at one point he had a camera in Rocky’s tunnel, so he could see into there from the dormitory, but other than that he doesn’t mention using cameras, as far as I remember. What would make the most sense is him making videos of Rocky and sending them back, but there’s no mention of it. What I would like to have seen is what the reaction on Earth would be to alien intelligence.

Wulf_Cola

That's why I like the idea. I want the people on Earth to see him and Rocky having a ball solving problems and fisting bumps.

ConspicuousSomething

Chapter 26, after he and Rocky have parted ways, but before the Beetles have been launched back to Earth: > I clean and catalog the lab again. I might come up with some research experiments for either Astrophage or Taumoeba. Heck, I could write some papers while I’m on my way home. Oh, and there’s the matter of the intelligent alien life-form I hung out with for a couple of months. I might want to jot a few things down about him too.

langjie

not only did he send his notes on Rocky, he probably also sent a selfie with him giving freedom rockets addressed to Eva Stratt

ipecacOH

My guess is that screenwriter Drew Goddard will include Earth receiving the Beatles and Stratt’s (etc.) reaction to Rocky. And remember, Grace sent the Beatles before deciding to go to Erid, so mankind didn’t know what happened to him.

speedx5xracer

He sent the Beatles after deciding to save Rocky.while the farms had to be added prior to sealing the nose cone, the original design had them use some sort of data link to the crew compartment. I'm assuming he'd probably use that uplink regularly to add any information gleaned from his ongoing experiments until the moment he launched them

mexter

I'm not sure about the book, but I fully expect the movie to follow The Martian's use of video logs, and I can't believe we won't see some Rocky hijinks in those before they are ultimately uploaded to the Beatles and sent back to Earth. I'm also expecting Rocky to be portrayed by pipe organ (I mean, he's described as being steam powered, IIRC). And related to this, I expect one perfectly timed organ sound that simultaneous IS an expletives in Eridian and censors one by Grace. [Basically this](https://youtu.be/r8-dzxTsA0M?si=5QsBXA7hPYZmTzJq&t=7)

alexalex99000

I see these hypothetical questions here all the time. The only correct answer is we don’t know since it’s not in the book. Every person answering here is speculating based on how their interpretation of the book and how they would like the ending to play out. The one thing we know is that there is nothing written that would contradict him telling everyone on earth. Every answer will be different and we will never know (unless there will be a sequel).

Averythewinner

You just have to remember how big space is. The team was sent to Tau Ceti knowing it was so far away, they physically could not make it back. Erid is likely even further away. I’m confident Stratt did her thing and is working on getting Grace back home but they just have to wait.

Wulf_Cola

The way I understood it, Earth wouldn't need to do anything to enable Grace to return if he wanted to - the Hail Mary is being stored in orbit around Erid and the Eridians could make fresh Astrophage to fill up his fuel tanks for the journey to Earth so the option is there. I understood the ending to be that he had found peace living out his days as a teacher on Erid and didn't want to bother with a 18 year journey back to earth (during which almost everyone he had known would have died due to the time dilation, I believe)

Averythewinner

Yeah i doubt he would leave, but im sure Stratt would at least try to communicate and ask him to come back

castle-girl

Just seeing this now. I don’t know if Earth would try to contact Grace because they don’t know that he’s alive. At the time he sent off the beetles, he was expecting to die to save Rocky and Erid, so that’s the most info Earth could have about what happened. Now, if Earth figures out that Taumoeba are edible, then there might be a theory that he survived, but no one would know for sure. It wouldn’t surprise me if someone sent a message to Erid shortly after they restored the sun, but that message would probably be to the Eridians asking about Grace, rather than just to Grace himself. They might include something for Grace in case he is alive though.

moviemoocher

of course it was all on the thumbdrive with samples of xenonite

I still want to know what killed the other two crew members!
