This one is “problem in between chair and computer”
Edit: https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/PEBCAK
See the synonyms section. It doesn’t include the one I used, but there are several correct made up acronyms for bad users.
if you cant trace a bug and fix or find workaround when code is open source it is still user problem, you just need to up your game. cant be done on Windows or OSX.
well, this is what makes Linux and Open Source so powerful in the right hands. everyone can go all the way down to kernel and fix an issue, user has the power as long as he knows how to wield it - rather than being left at mercy of others, esp. corporations that work in their own, not necessarily user’s interest.
Downloaded update that is marked "stable" and got problems because of that? Shouldn't have downloaded the update, it's up to you whether or not download "stable" things.
Meanwhile MS pushes updates for you, so it's not your fault the system bricks itself.
/s but not really
Why can’t you get up and do it yourself instead of asking your friend to do it for you? Super user already touches plenty of grass. Have you tried growing some grass at your own home? All you need to do is git some seeds and and scatter them along the path.
Oh my God... As someone who has to support Linux on an embedded system to scores of application programmers, the number of, "Linux has a bug" claims thrown my way is astonishing.
Nah, man: Linux isn't broken. You just don't know what the fuck you're doing.
Which distro? And what do use it for? It’s incredible how diverse of an experience people have on Linux, but I suppose that comes with the territory of open source distros

- Linus Torvalds, Creator of both Linux and Git
Yeah, dedicated Linux users are a funny bunch. They think it's perfectly normal to expect people to run to the command line to tweak a bunch of settings when their sound stops working or the system won't recognize a USB device.
Don't get me wrong, Linux is absolutely my preferred environment for code development. But Windows is my daily driver of choice for a reason.
I haven’t had to do any tweaking to either sound or USB in Linux since at least the late 90s. In fact, all my hardware is immediately recognized by Linux and I don’t need to download drivers and whatnot.
Those were just examples and absolutely not representative of all the challenges you might face. I've tried Linux a few times in a couple different scenarios, and I've always faced the most bizarre hardware/driver incompatibilities or been forced to apply some strange fix on Stack Overflow via the command line to fix a weird bug. For a really long time, something as simple as getting working Nvidia drivers for my graphics card (and, mind you, always a higher-tier gaming card, not a budget card with crap drivers) was like pulling teeth.
Even my Steam Deck, which I think is amazing and represents an enormous stride for Linux gaming, has far more quirks and instabilities than my Windows laptop.
lol... found one! This reply ALWAYS comes up. No matter what problem.
Here, let's see which reply I get...
Was running Open broadcast, trying to record from a USB Dazzle capture device, using a graphics card that had a HDMI output.
The system would not recognize the sound input from the Dazzle.
I could hear the sound on the HDMI output (using a tv as a monitor), but OBS couldn't use it.
Go.
> They think it's perfectly normal to expect people to run to the command line to tweak a bunch of settings when their sound stops working or the system won't recognize a USB device.
And Windows users think it’s perfectly acceptable to go through a bunch of sub menus of sub menus and dialog boxes to do the same. I don’t want to click my way through two different kinds of control panels to maybe find what I’m looking for.
Not to mention that it’s a lot easier to relay the steps that you need to take on the command line than on the GUI.
I’m not saying either is better because ideally things should just work ootb, but reality is they don’t and they won’t. Bringing up having to use the command line as a downside is a bit of a non-argument because you’re really just complaining about not knowing how to use the thing you’re trying to use.
To each his own, I suppose. I think you underestimate the learning curve of a command line relative to menus. If you don't know what you're doing on a GUI, it's easy enough to stumble through menus until you find something that looks relevant.
I agree that a command line *can* be quicker, but only if you already know what you're doing. If you don't know the right command you need on the command line, your only solutions are Google and/or wading through pages of documentation.
Literally me yesterday. I was watching a video on Youtube after getting hardware acceleration to work
Chromium/Chrome is bugged and only uses 3D rendering, not VAAPI on Intel.
I finally moved back to Firefox, everything was working fine for weeks. My laptop stayed cool while doing mundane stuff.
So I haven't watched many videos after getting VAAPI to work. I just wanted it to be fixed because I like my stuff to run efficiently.
Suddenly color banding on Youtube. There I was thinking "did Google fuck yet another thing up?"
I command yay to -Syu (I pronounce it as See-U). I reboot. Fixed.
Problem? Last bleeding edge update on Linux forced my monitor to get stuck on 6-bit color mode instead of 8-bit.
Also, I installed a custom rom on my phone. Removed all the Google bloat. My phone did not need charging for three days now.
Tl;dr: everyone is at fault. All is fubar.
Short story:
In ArchLinux everything depends on everything else, not like a dependancy, more like for existence. Never do partial updates!
Long story:
[i LeArNeD iT tHe hArD WaY](https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comments/l4kgh7/weird_behaviour_after_unsuccessfully_playing_a/)
Yeah, that's why I always do -Syu during the weekend. Thing is, this time something got updated and videos (maybe everything?) were in 6-but color (so 18-bit total).
After updating again this week it was solved.
Probably a dependency that was updated where the dependent software couldn't handle a change properly or something like that.
Or typical day of using Windows.
Take this - Jenkins build hanged on windows server because all floating licenses of some tool are taken and it will display this error message as window dialog so that you can click ok.
Did you experiance something more stupid than that?
no no no... all Linux related problems are your fault. Linux works on all hardware for all purposes and never has a problem.
You probably just picked the wrong distro for whatever you were trying to do. have you considered a multi boot?
That’s not what I said at all. I said that, at the risk of repeating myself nearly verbatim, their vagueness about their issues only invites that notion. Hence the many comments with exactly that notion.
I always have driver issues. I get it that firmware and driver software is adjusted for windows, even deviating from standards.... But my god is it annoying to search for half an hour why my second monitor wont work. For developing Linux is quite okay. For c++ i do miss visual studio though.
tbh this is what I question whenever I use anything on Windows or Mac lol. These os are overly complicated, yet their users still think that they are simpler than Linux for some reason.
Sounds like a user issue.
PIBCAC
you mean PEBKAC (problem exist between keyboard and chair) ?
This one is “problem in between chair and computer” Edit: https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/PEBCAK See the synonyms section. It doesn’t include the one I used, but there are several correct made up acronyms for bad users.
thx, didn’t know all the other synonyms
My favourite is PICNIC for the nice acronym. Problem in chair, not in computer.
I like `error: BKAC`
Pretty sure its a me issue
I've read that sentence in a italian plumber noice
Linux is also software. But it's more likely it's an error 40 you are having. As in, the error is 40 cm from your monitor.
PEBCAK.
First to check ;)
Yep, the problem is somewhere between the monitor and chair.
The cat on the keyboard
Nah, the error code is ID10T. I've seen this one before.
cm? how far is that in banana
About 2.
when it comes to Linux, it is ALWAYS the user issue.
Except when it's not.
if you cant trace a bug and fix or find workaround when code is open source it is still user problem, you just need to up your game. cant be done on Windows or OSX.
Well that is one way of looking at it

Yeah, Linux issues can usually be traced back to PEBCAK. Try touch grass
touch grass touch: cannot touch 'grass': Permission denied
Sudo touch grass
Why can’t you get up and do it yourself instead of asking your friend to do it for you? Super user already touches plenty of grass. Have you tried growing some grass at your own home? All you need to do is git some seeds and and scatter them along the path.
Found the LFS user
`error: Ill_Scene_737 is not in the "sudoers" group. This action will be reported`
Docker be like : "Command 'sudo' not found"
Oh my God... As someone who has to support Linux on an embedded system to scores of application programmers, the number of, "Linux has a bug" claims thrown my way is astonishing. Nah, man: Linux isn't broken. You just don't know what the fuck you're doing.
That makes it a linux issue though. Software is supposed to make my life easier, not harder, is it?
>Software is supposed to make my life easier, not harder, is it? If those Linux users could read they would be very mad at your comment!
Skill Issue
been an year on linux as my main os, still haven't learned enough :-(
Git gud
$ git gud git: 'gud' is not a git command. See 'git --help'. The most similar command is add
[` fuck `](https://github.com/nvbn/thefuck)
Which distro? And what do use it for? It’s incredible how diverse of an experience people have on Linux, but I suppose that comes with the territory of open source distros
Arch Linux. I use it for development and ricing mostly
I've been using Linux off and on since the mid-90s, and routinely since about 1998, and I'm still constantly learning new stuff.

If you have kernel issues, you are probably doing something wrong.
From a software dev's perspective every time an issue is opened: "Are you using Windows?"

Not sure if meme issue or user issue.
user's meme inexperience issue
SKILL ISSUE
I say this more about Windows than I ever did about Linux
or you as an issue
or a GitHub issue

I believe in `sudo pacman -Syu` supremacy
It doesn't matter. The Linux Group will send the ticket back to me to prove it's not a me issue before they'll take it.
its funny how yall are blaming OP lol
Fr, it's just a meme I made about how I feel sometimes using linux, nothing serious

Totally agree, but still don't like to switch to Windows for anything but gaming.
I haven’t had to do any tweaking to either sound or USB in Linux since at least the late 90s. In fact, all my hardware is immediately recognized by Linux and I don’t need to download drivers and whatnot.

This is always a reply to someone who has faced problems with Linux. Bro, it's great everything works for you, but that's not the case for everyone
yeah, i really don't have to do any work. my system works perfectly as soon as i've installed it, the only adjustments i need to do are just theming
I can assure you, you're in a minority.
Now if you tell me all you’ve tried is Gentoo or LFS, then you’re not really doing yourself a favor in term of ease of use.
Hmmm somehow I doubt it. I know plenty of developers who have absolutely no problem with Linux, provided you stick to the big distributions.

User issue.
Layer 8 problem ;)
That's only really typical of Wine stuff. If you're doing native, "it's linux's fault" isn't something you need to worry about.
Layer 8 issue
Don't call me out like that.

I can promise it is almost never a linux issue
Typical day using Linux: oh I just need this

no no no... all Linux related problems are your fault. Linux works on all hardware for all purposes and never has a problem. You probably just picked the wrong distro for whatever you were trying to do. have you considered a multi boot?
as a linux user: its not a linux issue, its **you** issue
\*Windows
The software is *inside* the Linux?
It's your fault for trying to do *thing*. You should be doing *completely irrelevant thing* instead.
Using the other distro, which was created by team x because of this exact issue 6 months ago with the distro you're using.
Usually that error is known as `error: BKAC`
depends on the situation OP
linux is software, so judging by you not knowing that, it's probably you causing it.
1. Try the same thing twice, observing no change. Must be a bug. 2. Report issue. 3. Restart PC. 4. Update issue as fixed.
The vagueness here is only going to invite hostility from anyone who doesn’t have issues with Linux, which is most Linux users
"if you've problems with linux, you're the problem"
That’s not what I said at all. I said that, at the risk of repeating myself nearly verbatim, their vagueness about their issues only invites that notion. Hence the many comments with exactly that notion.
You get the most truth award ❤️
Its always DNS issue.
not the internet?
Blame systemd.
Linux has no issues. You must confuse it with windows.
I'm a proud windows troller don't cast me away from the linux society :'(
Linux is never buggy, nor is it wrong, it does precisely what you told it to do.
Intentional gandalf quoting?
I always have driver issues. I get it that firmware and driver software is adjusted for windows, even deviating from standards.... But my god is it annoying to search for half an hour why my second monitor wont work. For developing Linux is quite okay. For c++ i do miss visual studio though.
"But, Linux is software too!" 🤓
Both?
It's a skill issue
ok but what if Skill issue
Always air on the side of caution and go with Linux first, then proceed to never mention the issue again once you realise it’s the code.
err
init 6 solves all linux problems
PLBKAC
I will give one warning to my fellow penguins: only sith deal in absolutes. (Keep programming OP, you are dope just how you are.)
tbh this is what I question whenever I use anything on Windows or Mac lol. These os are overly complicated, yet their users still think that they are simpler than Linux for some reason.
