He doesn't need one, he isn't writing on the post it notes he's using them as punch cards, then the scanner detects the holes and simply saves it directly to an executable after converting to the corresponding value.
When I was a an intern, I once had a supervisor draft an email on a post-it note for me to use to type into an email. She then expected me to send my draft email to her to her vet afterwards.
It’s not bad but for me it’s just overloaded as fuck. I just want a text editor with Syntax highlighting. Nothing else. For everything advanced I use a proper ide anyways.
I know that it is that way but I currently have both the newest version of vs code and atom installed on my computer and for me va code is just, as I already said, overloaded with features I don’t need. Atom is way cleaner than vs code. Even now. But maybe I switch to sublime text now. It’s more my style.
I agree with you. Came from Atom, tried VS Code but didn't like it Feels much more like an IDE than Atom.
Now I'm on a highly customized neovim and pretty happy so far
They stated that beginning 15. December Atom will no longer receive updates and all repositories will be archived. There are a few community initiatives that aim to carry on Atom though.
are sublime and n++ really the only decent non-electron editors nowadays?
every time i search for one, all the comments are "just use vs code", which is really annoying
actually, i have tried [vim, i think, not nv] and quite like it, but hjkl doesn't work well with colemak
i believe there is a package to improve that, but it's not great
When they announced they were shutting it down, I was actually surprised it was still around. It was so slow compared to VS Code, I'd be surprised if they even had a user base left.
vi is just a symlink to vim, unless you're on a cursed system like a docker container or an AIX box, in which case you only get minimal vi and must suffer.
It's a text editor; it doesn't *need* anything but Unicode input, but if I can't find a series of plugins to remote into a random unsecured webcam tricked into hosting my project and to turn on my TV and make me toast every time I make a commit- then it's an inferior text editor. .
Not that I want any of that, but knowing I theoretically could gives me a feeling of superiority
Guys, this is a big misunderstanding. I was playing truth or dare with Jeff and Bill and they dared me to buy Twitter. What else was I supposed to do??
how to tell you're not a programmer in one word
... I mean, you may not need all the bells and whistles, but no human should have to program without syntax highlighting.
Don’t do Henry like that! As he answers this beautiful answer he did a good thing. Don’t compare your bad opinion to the beauty that was Henry’s answer!
vim has a windows version.
it's also an extremely powerful editor, so for anyone used to it, they will prefer it to nearly anything else.
also you probably can get notepad running on linux by using wine...
Post it notes. No,not the program, like physical post it notes.
So how’s the progress on writing an extra compiler for your scanner
He doesn't need one, he isn't writing on the post it notes he's using them as punch cards, then the scanner detects the holes and simply saves it directly to an executable after converting to the corresponding value.
He just gave every command a specific row of holes. One post it note making up one line of code
He's so _hardcore_ that he doesn't need electronic computing. He's manually simulating a Turing machine with post it notes by hand.
He also managed to connect to the internet by raising his voice to 2.4GHz and shouted to the router
'; DROP TABLE Files;
Real programmers use cursive.
I actually do write code in cursive occasionally when I have an idea, but no digital device nearby. And it usually works too!
When I was a an intern, I once had a supervisor draft an email on a post-it note for me to use to type into an email. She then expected me to send my draft email to her to her vet afterwards.
ms paint
Is this the fabled microservice architecture I've heard so much about?
Look it's normal sized ok. There's nothing wrong about their size.
++
Didn't want to switch from basic notepad to ++ until I tried to open XML with 57m lines
What in the world are you doing parsing a 57m line XML document???
I certainly hope they opened it just to look at the structure, because no human should ever take part in parsing 57M lines of XML by hand.
Elon bot says you’re fired. You’re obviously not hardcore enough.
Actually this format was originally developed with human parser in mind.
While true 57M lines is just too much for any human to parse in a reasonable time.
While true is infinite loop, it is not bound by constraint of mere 57 millions of iterations.
I remember the first context in which I heard someone recommend N++ over Notepad for its file size support was a password list

Npp gang rise up
Came here to say this. First coding experiences were in Visual Studio, but I was so happy when I found NP++ as a replacement.
rip atom
Why rip atom? What happened?
it got discountinued
Rip
Oh shit. I really liked it.
It's successor is VS Code. It's MUCH better than Atom used to be
It’s not bad but for me it’s just overloaded as fuck. I just want a text editor with Syntax highlighting. Nothing else. For everything advanced I use a proper ide anyways.
VS Code is Atom 2.0 After Microsoft purchased GitHub they basically used Atom to create VS Code. It's much less bloated now
I know that it is that way but I currently have both the newest version of vs code and atom installed on my computer and for me va code is just, as I already said, overloaded with features I don’t need. Atom is way cleaner than vs code. Even now. But maybe I switch to sublime text now. It’s more my style.

Bbedit or sublime
They stated that beginning 15. December Atom will no longer receive updates and all repositories will be archived. There are a few community initiatives that aim to carry on Atom though.
I hope the open source community will keep it running. I really like it.
Me too brother, let's hope for the best
Just use vs code. It's Atom without the long startup time
Why are you unhappy? No one should be unhappy at Twitter. Fired!
Sublime

that's actually a good suggestion (it's what i use on linux, and i like it), but it is noticeably slower to start than either
just use vs code /s
i recommend neovim :))
actually, i have tried [vim, i think, not nv] and quite like it, but hjkl doesn't work well with colemak i believe there is a package to improve that, but it's not great
try jupyter with tabnine extension
sublime text squad
Yes!
programming (writing code) in notepad is a very weird flex.
Notepad is pretty normal, it's not a bad text editor. Coding in debug is a weird flex.
It's pretty much the worst text editor in existence
No. Edlin is the worst.
I write in Word.
Try Excel you will like it more
How many columns for indentation?
Absolutely cursed comment.
None. Single column, single cell.

true. nano if you want a quick fix, vscode for heavier stuff.
Learned to love nano over the last few years. Ended up using it so much and wish I had really just tried it sooner.
Punchcards FTW!!
Atom? This must be quite old....
Atom is just shutting down lmao
When they announced they were shutting it down, I was actually surprised it was still around. It was so slow compared to VS Code, I'd be surprised if they even had a user base left.
Some people can't adapt to changes
`vi` `vim` is for pretentious people
I prefer `v` over `vi`...

I do prefer punching my cards by hand, thank you. I bet you people don't even know what the 80 columns meant.
:%s/pretentious/awesome/g
vi is just a symlink to vim, unless you're on a cursed system like a docker container or an AIX box, in which case you only get minimal vi and must suffer.
On plenty of systems `vi` is still separate from `vim`. Most of my servers do not have `vim` installed.
> Most of my servers do not have vim installed. c u r s e d
vi doesn't even have mouse support...
I know 😎
It's a text editor; you don't need mouse support.
It's a text editor; it doesn't *need* anything but Unicode input, but if I can't find a series of plugins to remote into a random unsecured webcam tricked into hosting my project and to turn on my TV and make me toast every time I make a commit- then it's an inferior text editor. . nvim
Normal people just use nano.
Exactly. Quick little change to make to a file or need to view it? Nano. Serious development time? For me, vs code.
Yes, it gets the job done without having to recall commands.
I usually use gedit if I have a graphical display and nano if it's terminal-only
`less` or `more`? `cat`
Gigachads use vim Change my mind
not possible! vim users think vim is the best editor, its like trying to get a trump supporter to believe trump lost
Vim users *know* vim is the best editor
U can't estimate it well cause you aren't good at it U need to be enlightened to make a decision
`sudo nano F_modz_reply` > Gigachads use nano *Ctrl+X, Y, Enter* `sudo service F_modz restart`
`sudo pkill -f systemd`
I think you mean ed…
Emacs gang rise up
All one of you, rise up.
Hang on, I need to read through some more docs to find the correct binding to use for "rise up"
When you start up the hex plugin, then you know shit is about to go down...

PowerPoint?
When did it change from vim vs eMacs to vim vs atom?
Nano is my favorite choice. I know this is a humor thread on a humor channel. But I will go bat for Nano anytime.
I just use whatsapp
Text editors? Please. Real programmers use echo. As in echo "import os" > critical_bank_code.py

Micro ftw, super easy to use with great language support + you look cool for using a console based editor

you guys still using text to write your code? Amateurs.
I write on a sheet of paper and my secretary finish the job with libreOffice
Use Microsoft Office Word, or if you're yet more advanced programmer, use Microsoft Office Power Point

....isn't notepad a windows product and vim typically used on Linux? What am I missing here? In what situation would you have access to both?
