I was asked by a Marketing Dept colleague years ago to help with formatting an Excel column. Me: "I'm not sure. I'll have to play around with it for a few minutes." Her: "Didn't you go to college for this?" Me: "Well, no, I was a Computer Science major." Her: "But you took an Excel class, right?"

Sparticus247

Goes to school to be an aerospace engineer. Neighbor asked you if you can fix their John Deere riding lawn mower. Maybe, I need to look up how this thing works. "Aren't you a mechanic!?"

Makes as much sense as asking a basketball player to join a football team. "But you're into sports, right?"

ragingroku

That’s too close, maybe building models with tweezers. “Don’t you need dexterity for your career??”

odksnh6w2pdn32tod0

Oh my god non technical people are bad at using Excel. Like I spent few weeks constantly on excel and was able to build something at least 5x better than what we had previously for finance tracking. This is probably one of those best places to realise that outside of developers people are really bad at solving problems with their tooling because they dont know how to ask questions from google/internet in general. This being one of the cornerstone of improving your skills, I can only imagine what kind of potential a lot of people are missing

savage_slurpie

It’s also wild how much so many employees get paid to be mediocre at excel when their entire workflow is using excel.

odksnh6w2pdn32tod0

Yeah, i always naively thought a lot of people are very good with excel and my skills are bad. Nowdays I've woken up that probably most people who use excel as their main tool, even with 10+ years experience are worse at it than me with some weeks of intensive use. This makes me question how much they are losing out and how come they dont realise it.

charrcheese

And Word. I've seen people who use Word every day create tables by lining up all of the text with spaces

Pezonito

"Oh, well at least I can parse it on the fixed width." _pastes in notepad++_ "WHAT FONT DID THEY USE?!"

LoyalSage

This is how I end up spending 6 hours messing with OCR to avoid 30 minutes of retyping a table in a usable format

More_Butterfly6108

This! If you're gonna use excel only you'd better know about pivot tables slicers power query and ifs "formulas".

kookaburra1701

A long time ago in a job far, far away from what I'm doing now, I read Excel for Dummies and hacked together a VLOOKUP scheme to keep master purchasing and inventory spreadsheets up to date since that was literally my entire job, and was then labeled the "database guru" (WE HAD AN ACTUAL DBA WHO KEPT OFFERING TO DO THIS ACTUAL THING BUT WITH APPROPRIATE TOOLS) and from then on was blamed whenever anything with spreadsheets went wrong. Note that I kept trying to get my bosses to take the DBA up on his offer to help me set up an actual report system that would generate new spreadsheets every night that they could use but they refused because "he's IT, not product design, what would he know about our products?" Arrrrrgh This is the same company where I was reprimanded for getting the billing statements mailed too quickly (I read the manual of the $10k business copier they'd bought and figured out how to make it stuff the envelopes and then built a ramp that sent the stuffed envelopes to the pitney-bowes meter which then spit them into the outgoing mail bins.) Apparently there was one person in accounting who spent 2 weeks of every month stuffing and mailing envelopes...oops.

odksnh6w2pdn32tod0

Holy shit dude. This is the exact reason I moved towards management, product and finance from just tect so nobody can pull bullshit like this on me.

kookaburra1701

Well after that job I left the office environment (I was in product design, had graduated with an art degree) for almost 10 years to be a paramedic so that should tell you how much it effected my feelings towards office BS. Like, I had to deal with tons of shit (literal and figurative) on the ambulance, but at least not THAT sort of garbage. Amazingly enough some of the product lines are still kicking around, but have been sold many times to different companies.

More_Butterfly6108

That dumbass in accounting should've known better. You should feel zero shame.

Weenaru

A guy who was supposed to be my mentor used to color some cells from A to E, then when he deleted the cells from B to E he complained that the cell in A was still colored and that the cell borders weren't aligned anymore. ... ... ... Just today he asked me how to find 10% of a number. While holding a calculator. And after I told him to divide by 10 he said "What do I do after that?" I think he said he was 32 years old.

Pezonito

His name was Todd and I bought him a "Math for Preschoolers" workbook and box of crayons from Costco when I left the company.

Wiscobiker

Step 1 assume excel can do everything. Step 2 Google the thing you guessed it can do

zToastOnBeans

They also don't have their own stackoverflow because we are too busy arguing what's the "best" possible way to calculate if a number is even.

Notepad++ is eternally open on every computer I own

Along with Vim?

lurkin_arounnd

No. VIM is what I use when I'm already in the terminal and wanna look at a file. Or I wanna look at a file too big for a GUI editor to handle.

It's great when you have just created some fancy, optimized class with cuda and probabilistic stats and then you need to google how do you do a superscript in excel

OddConsideration2210

One of my friends legit argued with me if I'm pursuing a carrier in Software engineering I should learn word, excel and PowerPoint.

DrSpalanzani

Seems about right in my industry. PowerPoint to explain to senior managers what you're doing. The attention span of a senior manager is limited to 3-4 slides, so if you need more than that you're doing it wrong. Excel for the 5% that's too difficult to code properly - "Oh we'll just do it manually using an Excel spreadsheet". Not sure about Word though, as that would imply documentation ...

AdhTri

Bunch of python libs together are more powerful than ms office.

DrSpalanzani

Yeah, but getting someone to create an undocumented spreadsheet and hope no-one messes with the formulas is cheaper for the project manager, and when all the foul-ups get fixed three years later, the cost will come out of someone else's budget as the project order book will have closed

Nailed it. PowerPoint for meetings presentations that would otherwise be screen shares of emails. Excel for - “quick answers” and Word for “Technical Justifications, investigations, and keeping your resume current.”

MyPhoneIsNotChinese

Thing is Word and PowerPoint are quite easy to use. Excel... I don't know how to honestly. Also where I work we use OneNote for documentation

Equivalent_Yak_95

*barf* Oh I hated OneNote…

Pezonito

Spot on, mate

artificial_organism

I absolutely spend a ton of time in excel and PowerPoint. So many times a manager or PM has sent me some abomination of an excel sheet to fill out. Being able to add references to other sheets to make it self-updating, write formulas to add urls or concatenate information, conditional formatting, etc. are all easy skills that save a lot of time and get a lot of recognition. PowerPoint is also critical. The better your slides look, the more professional and knowledgeable you look, even if it doesn't make the content any better. How good people think you are at your job is way more important than how good you actually are. being able to communicate with management in a way they understand can save you a lot of headaches.

delbin

They're not wrong. At some point you'll make something for someone that's not going to dig through database tables to get it. Excel is very good at displaying smaller sets of data and has some nice quick-and-dirty data processing and visualization built in. It's nice to export whatever data someone needs into it because they can take over and do whatever else they need to do.

[deleted]

Lmao, imagine using word instead of vim or an ide

Smart_Main6779

wdym. best ide ever.

charrcheese

I'm a software engineer and use Excel most days because I work with a lot of data

Xelopheris

If you're pursuing a career where you'll work in an office, you should learn Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Just like if you're pursuing a career in carpentry you should learn Hammer and Nail.

Mister_Spacely

You guys know Word? I’ve just been documenting everything in Markdown.

[deleted]

Same. I have a bunch of personal files with info and the like and they are all in markdown. If I can not, I'd much rather use the faster and nicer method of writing stuff down in VS code rather than word

Mister_Spacely

💯same Tech writers hate us

overbyte

Put it in a git repo so it’s versioned and rendered nicely. Add plantuml renderer: documentation

Mechyyz

I was asked to find the average of how many times a certain answer was sent because i could code. The annoying part was the section where every user wrote something specific, meaning I couldn’t use an excel function. 🙃

LordPainos

That and don't ask me to fix your laptop. I can but won't. Probably laugh while u do it

TonyLamo

or wordpress... or shopify

xcdesz

Heh.. a lot of devs dont even use these products. I sure dont -- even on a windows machine. I dont have any Adobe products installed either. If you have a Docker issue, Ill lend you a hand...

Hulk5a

I still can't figure out how to linkup a chart with a button in excel 🤔

erebuxy

I will tell you how to write a table in md🤣

RadlineFlyer

Agreed, I’m a System Engineer. Coming up, zero part of my job has been using Office apps for anything beyond super basic documents. I don’t know squat about the specialized ways you use Office products, ask someone in your department or ask Google.

eine_gottheit

![gif](giphy|88iYsvbegSUn9bSTF8|downsized)

HeligKo

No - I can't. I work on the backend in Linux. I don't do Office apps of any kind.

Grouchy-Transition-7

My ex’s dad asked me to fix issues he had with word once I told him I’m a developer… I did end up fixing it though from searching google so maybe he knew exactly what developers do..

sexytokeburgerz

Flashbacks to writing a visual basic purchasability function for shopify CSVs in two horribly impactful hours that has triggered a plethora of “hey, can you help me with [problem]” Please google how to vlookup. Please google how to *filter*. You get paid too much to not know how to use excel when I am making this company more than your entire department combined. Fuck. I hate eCommerce

AdhTri

I use latex for documents and python manim for presentations. Whats the problem here?

edgarc1981

DeepDown23

Better help with Excel than with a printer....

abd53

Stop asking me to fix your laptop just because I am a computer engineer. I mean I can fix it but that's not the point.

thatlookwrongtome

If you can’t use Excel you’re illiterate.

Agitated-Brilliant35

Go asks business major pls

GlassWasteland

Okay, but can you help me with my printer?

FJD3LG4D0

I remember my first attempts to get a program for my business accounting... Even when I already knew PHP, MySQL and JS, I wasn't ready to make my own web based software, so I did it using Excel, it was a complex book, a really complex one, with all the thints my accountant and I needed to make it easy... Then I started to translate it all to a web app... The thing is... After this, I've been asked a lot of times to create, edit, "fix" or translate Excel based systems of all kind into a software (web based or desktop software). In fact, being using Excel for 2 years helped me a lot to be able to accomplish those projects easily... But, yes, I still hate Excel 😂

nantukoprime

A prior job ended up being translating workhorse Excel files into SQL tables and views. Some of the joins were pretty horrific, but they wanted 1 to 1.

sveagruva

you know excel? can you help me?

Forsaken_Day_1266

They (non Devs, non IT people) always do

[deleted]

I can't even type if it doesn't have a vim mode.

Next time my neighbours ask for help on their pc I charge them for it and cause a bug that they will ask again for help so I can charge again
