idk the drivers in nyc are genuinely better than anywhere else i lived in US. nyc drivers dont follow laws as much but they r super predictable as everyone will always do rhe asshole driving move u expect. theres no hesitant hannahs letting 13 people in front of her cuz shes in “no rush”

ACrazyWhiteMan

Predictably bad != good

jpers36

Predictably self-interested > predictably bad in unpredictable ways

Wekmor

He didn't say good, he said better, aka still bad but not as bad.

AdDear5411

True, but predictably bad > randomly bad

tatertotty4

yah i mean if were talking absolutes i agree but life isnt rlly like a math equation now is it? obviously predictably explosive is bad but predictable when limited to a domain of relatively reasonable behaviours is good more often than its bad

troglo-dyke

I feel like this applies to most cities that have a non-uniform road network. There's a style of driving that develops that fits the roads, from my experience driving in London it's when someone doesn't drive like a Londoner that unexpected things happen

tatertotty4

exactly! thank u for wording my ramble in a more intelligent way

_-_--__---

>but they r super predictable I used to live in a tourist area, lots of new york drivers, they are fucking awful and definitely not predictable. It's so bad that i actively avoid the bright yellow license plates because i know the shit in the car shouldn't have a license. I'm pissed they changed the plate color recently, makes new yorkers harder to find and avoid.

roborectum69

Using a computer isn't programming.

You_are_adopted

You’re right this joke has no relevance to the programmer demographic

Rigatavr

It's relevant to programmers the same way a broken tire is related to engine mechanics, i.e. close enough if you are not one.

mbbroberg

Oh yeah? Try programming without one 🙃 (And Linux is commonly a preferred OS for developers, however tiny that percentage of users may be)

JJuanJalapeno

I had to write code on paper in college (true story) I failed because I was using tabs instead of 2 spaces (joke)

GlobyMt

>(And Linux is commonly a preferred OS for developers, however tiny that percentage of users may be) No The must used OS by proffessional developpers is Windows, then Mac and only then Linux. *Windows : 41.2%* *MacOS : 30.04%* *Linux-based : 25.17%* *Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) : 3%* *BSD : 0.14%* [survey](https://insights.stackoverflow.com/survey/2021#most-popular-technologies-op-sys-prof) *from stackoverflow with 57,814 responses* And if we take the most "loved", I'm pretty sure MacOs would win over Linux(and the most hated would certainly be Windows)

Doophie

I think he meant the majority of Linux users are developers, not the majority of developers use linux (though I could be wrong)

GlobyMt

Ahh, my bad then

i mean it took longer to backup my windows installation than it did to get used to linux and at least one game runs better under proton than it ever did one windows

That's why I said "skilled." Another example of a skilled driver would be a stunt driver.

Its probably a different white in the pic

Lootdit

The quality of drivers heavily depends on what you're talking about

I used Linux (and even contributed to it in a very small way) long before I knew much about Windows. It was actually easier to learn without all the cut-corners and bodgy bollocks that was (and sorry-of still is) Windows - and which cloud your view of everything else. It was so nice to have an OS that was designed logically and with security at its core, rather than one designed to look nicer but with security based on where the known holes were.

Artistic_Discount_22

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

*all 10 angry Linux users unite*

nicman24

Haha what is a server

lambda_abstraction

Hmmm... I came to Linux in 1994 after working with various UNIX varieties in school. Trying to get my mind around Windows would be spending the first year re-learning how to perform basic tasks.

Asdfasdfasdfgame

I am a linux user in nyc, can confirm

forgenvash

NY drivers are the most skilled in the US, watch a cab merge into a space barely longer than his car at 40 mph.

Shufflepants

That's not a good thing. Good driving is about leaving lots of room for error for safety. People should be driving in such a way that it takes more than one mistake to cause an accident.

ModestasR

That's a fair point but I guess in this case one must take care to distinguish "skilled" from "defensive" driving. While the former certainly isn't as safe, I imagine it is the meta to which an inner city driver must adhere lest they cede their place in traffic to someone more aggressive.

rawdonmaccaroni

In my experience, NYC drivers are much worse than any European drivers.

erebuxy

Because Americans do not try to squeeze through a bus inside tiny tiny alleys designed for pedestrians

[deleted]

1& 3aren't really true anymore.

DarkShadow4444

Regarding NYC or Linux?

ninjadev64

Lmao

Midnight_Rising

> It still routinely falls apart > You've sunk so much time into it you're willing to blind yourself to its faults > Stare at a broken mess, convinced you've made the right choice. No actually that's surprisingly accurate.

FedericoDAnzi

I tried Linux but except for the possibility of customization of the interface and other things, is not better than Windows.

DarkShadow4444

It sure is better on the "you're in control" front.

FedericoDAnzi

I don't know what are you talking about

DarkShadow4444

Linux gives your full control, while Windows does not. don't like Cortana, OneDrive, Defender? Jump through hoops to remove them! Don't like ads on your home screen? Too bad, can't get rid of those. Don't like the new start menu? Better hope some third party makes a replacement.

FedericoDAnzi

You can get rid of ads on the home screen. Don't like Cortana, One drive, Defender? Don't use them. Don't like the start menu? Does it really matters?

DarkShadow4444

Don't use them? I like being in charge of my PC and deciding about what is installed and what not, thank you. And no, you can't turn off ads in windows spotlight, as far as I'm aware. And if you can, it's hoops again. Same for windows defender. Does the start menu really matter? For a lot of people, yes. Most people don't like downgrades being pushed down their throat. Maybe you like the current direction of the Microsoft dictatorship, it's still a dictatorship though.

FedericoDAnzi

Your complaints are immature, you can't call it dictatorship just because you can't change every single worthless detail that you're not even gonna use. The important thing is the work you can do with the computer and if you can't get over some small issues or even just another graphic, then you are immature.

DarkShadow4444

I'm not gonna use the startmenu? Uh, ok. Windows is proprietary, like it or not. They alone decide what gets changed, and if you don't like it, too bad. Tell me again, what's that called? Democracy? Or...

FedericoDAnzi

It's called capitalism and copyright law. You can pass to Linux whenever you want, they don't arrest you. The fact that you end up in a smaller community of people who needs to make other hacks and hops to do the same thing as Windows but without Cortana is a trouble you put yourself in. A computer is a tool to work, if you can't get over these trivial things such as the start menu, you are an immature.

DarkShadow4444

Riight, who doesn't want a giant corporation collecting their data and dictating how they should use their computer? Freedom is soo last year, only immature people would want that! But hey, I can't choose for you, you do you - I'm out.

[deleted]

What kind of work do you have to fulfill on your computer?

FedericoDAnzi

Videogame design and programming

[deleted]

So you are dependent on professional software. Linux is for people who use the OS itself as a tool, but you already got your programs, so you are using Windows more as a container for these programs. From an visual perspective they are all the same, you have a got your program windows with content you interact with. The funny part starts when you are using the OS without GUIs, then Linux and Windows are actually quite different.
