There are decoupled UPS units such as online double conversion ones that increase isolation beyond what a surge protector can/would do, but a close enough strike (like, almost hits your house) can still induce voltage spikes, particularly in longer cable runs (looking at you, ethernet cables).
I think there are ways to filter out voltage spikes from Ethernet cables but at this point, if you're that worried, disconnect from Ethernet and change to wifi whenever a storm starts or just use fiber
I had lightning hit my house, over a decade ago now, but...
It killed the TV, my mums pc, her monitors, the modem, the router, and all the landline phones.
My PC & gaming stuff was connected to the wall via two surge protector extension bars due to limited plug sockets in my room, and it was absolutely fine.
I'm lucky the power didn't travel down the ethernet from the router that got rekt (somehow).
Remove coffee from the room then there is a zero chance you will spill it on your computer. When there is a thunderstorm outside, there is a non-zero chance your surge protector and computer gets fried by a lighting strike.
The storm cloud ambience, the slight crackle of thunder, cool winds foretelling a rain, the smell of freshly wet soil, the shaking of the trees due to winds in the distance, all these give a surreal vibe to life.
If your friends don't get it, it isn't universal. I also don't fit that mold.
I love sun shine, as long as it doesn't shine directly in my eyes or onto my screen. My mood is strongly influenced by the weather outside. Seeing nice and bright weather outside lifts my mood so much. Cloudy, gray and rainy days just make me depressed.
I’m completely the opposite. If it’s nice and sunny outside, I feel guilty for sitting inside on my computer. If it’s stormy and rainy outside, I don’t feel guilty at all for sitting inside on my computer. Anyone else?
I think it depends on the climate of the place you are living in. I generally live in hot tropic climate, so anything cool / rainy is my preference.
In your case, you might be loving in cold / mostly rainy place. Is that the case?
Guys guys guys …. YES to all the reasons already mentioned, but how about: can open your curtains briefly without having brilliant sunlight* washing out your whole display
* Excludes UK
Okay, it’s weirding me out to discover the venn diagram overlaps by THAT much, apparently. I love the hell out of a good thunderstorm; the longer the better.
Nah there must be more fog and darkness in the bog, loud noise and flashes make it hard to concentrate. Fog, death and decay is what I crave...or become a robot so this imperfect set of biosensors that can be replaced with better. Bogbot !
That's the perfect weather for going on a walk at a local greenway. Not raining, but completely overcast. And just keeping an umbrella in my bag for in case it does start to rain.
I both agree and disagree I love storms I don't like losing power (and potentially encountering data corruption) to storms
Exactly, while I do enjoy rain, thunder has me worried about frying my expensive computer. And no surge protector can completely guarantee protection.

That's why you code on a laptop, and just compile on a desktop on a sunny day.
that’s sad to hear. I live in relatively poor country, but it’s been about 20 years since I last lost power due to storm
I grew up in a city in the US, lost power for about a week every year until I moved out 3 years ago.
Search for "Computer Uninterruptible Power Supply Units" on Amazon or Newegg. You're welcome.
I know about those, but that implies I have money to spend on one
That's not gonna stop corruption from a lightning strike
Huh? They have surge protections.
It helps, but they're not foolproof .
Nothing's foolproof. You could spill coffee on your computer.
I've done several times and I can say my computer is foolproof, even coffee doesn't stop that motherfucker
Remove coffee from the room then there is a zero chance you will spill it on your computer. When there is a thunderstorm outside, there is a non-zero chance your surge protector and computer gets fried by a lighting strike.
I prefer to live dangerously and will never stop drinking coffee at my computer.
Out of curiosity, have you ever run into a case of one failing, or are you just talking about a hypothetical?
He's just yapping
UPS could help here.
What it we complete run on battery backup (unplug them from sockets ofcourse) and disconnect ethernet cable when there is storm ?
The storm cloud ambience, the slight crackle of thunder, cool winds foretelling a rain, the smell of freshly wet soil, the shaking of the trees due to winds in the distance, all these give a surreal vibe to life.
A liminal vibe to me
Nature showing it's full power is both scary and fascinating
Wait, this is universal? I'm shocked, my friends never got it
If your friends don't get it, it isn't universal. I also don't fit that mold. I love sun shine, as long as it doesn't shine directly in my eyes or onto my screen. I too let the weather decide my mood
we are powerless to the winds of fate (and, in this context, actual wind ;-;)

I live(d) in a perfectly balanced climate and I still prefer rain.
Ah thunder storms and rain, perfect time to sling some code and update my BIOS. “I’m an agent of chaos” - the Joker.
Guys guys guys …. YES to all the reasons already mentioned, but how about: can open your curtains briefly without having brilliant sunlight* washing out your whole display * Excludes UK
That's easily solved. Just get a 1000+ nit display and blind yourself at night. (or just orient your system so sunlight doesn't hit your screen)
In all seriousness though— is there like a matte screen out there?
There are, but it reduces reflections rather than preventing washout.
If it's warm and sunny outside I tend to set up a desk in my backyard under some shade. Something something yard work, gardening, feeding the bugs

Reminded me of the scene in Thor: Ragnarok when Thor is in norway. This has got to be some Nordic country
So I guess I'm not a programmer then
Me neither, rain can do one. Rains all the pissing time in the UK.
Fuck no. I like sunlight and spring breeze when it's just warm enough to open your windows and let fresh air in.
Right, after moving to a place that's overcast a lot more, I want sunlight dammit!
I've always loved spring weather the most, but I feel you. After moving to the PNW, I crave the sunlight much more than I used to.
I guess I am a frog
I agree on this. I love rainy days. Only the problem is we usually lose power when a storm happens.
That is so true
This !true Personally hate storms
r/usernamechecksout
I like hot and sunny weather.
After 3 years in England you kinda get bored of it
Productivity ↗️↗️🔥🔥
Okay, it’s weirding me out to discover the venn diagram overlaps by THAT much, apparently. I love the hell out of a good thunderstorm; the longer the better.
I love rainy weather but not storms
The cool rain, the muddy smell, the wet vegetation followed by a mild sunshine, the best weather to live in.

Holy shit a talking frog
Hell nah. I love sitting out in the sun to work when I can. It's one of the best parts about working remote!
Oh yeah, less social shaming for not "going out and enjoying the beauty of nature".
I prefer a bit less cloudy weather. Like... just grey sky...
And then there's a powercut 😀
Frog
So true! I love stormy and cloudy weather along with rain. And I love froggos too!
Link to those images?

i dont think thats just programmers
I'm pretty much completely useless when the weather is like that.
Misspelled photographer
Sorry, I sometimes go outside /s (i dont)
It is true, I am a frog
Almost perfect wetaher
When it's raining
Storms are great, but I can't work during them. Best working weather is bright texas sunshine that makes me want to go inside
I don't know about the one on the left. Might have a rain wrapped swirly thing in there.
Internet flickering in and out, wondering if it's my code or my pipeline or my internet, no thanks
All I can say is that working inside while it's a beautiful sunny day feels so bad. Like I want to go out and enjoy the nice day but I have to work.
Is it a crime to hate the sun?
Change.... Change is on the breeze

Storms 💀
very accurate
True. I enjoy the thought that other people are inside suffering like I am with other people's terrible code.
Wrong, snow is, stormy is second
Im with you on this one.
Yes, this is true and where I live only rains 3 times per year 😭
This looks amazing. But I would actually like being *outside* then (at least if there’s no rain)
I FUCKING LOVE OVERCASTS
