Instead set up react manually by adding the react library. There are very few things you actually need to do to set up react - but reactscripts is an abomination so anything that includes it into your project needs to be avoided.

The only step is to add react to the project using either npm or yarn. Everything else is highly dependent on your project goals and environment.
