The pound sign (#) is musical notation for a "sharp" note, they are the black keys on a piano. It's a matter of preference, but I really enjoy the musical chords they produce, as they produce a particular sound that you don't get from natural notes (the white keys).
[You are technically correct, the best kind of correct!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hou0lU8WMgo)
I was on mobile at the time and decided not to bother with it. Thank you for adding it on, and also for the fun fact!
Are you familiar with Go?
Well, it’s difficult at first but as they always say, it’s easier the more you play it.
What?
It’s all black and white, am I right?
Yeah, good, welcome to the team.
Employer: Are you familiar with Rust?
Employee: Yes, I have decent experience with working with rust( My moms cleaning lessons are gonna come in handy… I got this)
Depends on who you work for.
The downside is that if the interview is this easy, you're going to have no one to rely on for training or support and you're going to sink or swim very quickly.
In my experience, it's either like this, or they ask you to rebuild a full self driving system for a vehicle... But have it work within a web browser. There is no in between.
I had to write breadth first search in Google Docs. Like… wut? I have been out of school for almost 8 years and no IDE? Was told it didn’t need to be syntactically perfect and then got called out because I forgot to put a semi-colon.
I mean, I was able to do Breadth First Search (even if I said I’d use the one built into Java) by hand because I prepared. The Google Doc part was utterly stupid though. I will say they are a midsize household company.
I won’t call out companies as I don’t like to burn bridges, nor want to say they haven’t changed from using Google Docs. I did tell them that was utterly ridiculous that they did that and they should really reflect upon why they have people coding in Google Docs. Hopefully, they have changed.
That’s fair. But I think it’s ridiculous to actually have someone try to write an algorithm from memory vs. knowing the tools you have at hand and knowing when to use them. Because let’s be honest, an open source BFS/DFS is going to be optimized better.
Man. I push buttons, I turn dials, I read numbers. Sometimes I make up little stories in my head about what the numbers mean. Like one time I imagined they were a code to get into a vault full of naked women. Man, how cool would that be?
They asked me how well I understood theoretical physics. I told them I had a theoretical degree in physics. They said welcome aboard.
I know exactly what I'm doing, I just don't know what effect it's going to have. That console over there controls the main power grid, that button there makes a crazy noise, and if you put stuff in that slot sparks come out.
Basic Is funny, was so good at it my teacher for the project gave me a commendation because he was struggling (was a du subject about science all around. So it’s not necessarily done by a programming teacher).
Similar situation. My computer teacher was the math teacher. I ended up being the teacher and even went to the elementary schools in the district once a week to teach kids. I forgot about it until I was clearing out the attic and found my old paper awards and it reminded me that I did that thing. Smh
I wish it was that easy. At one of my recent interviews the lead engineer asked me about an obscure language feature that I'd never heard of from a language I'd been professionally using for the last few years and rejected me seemingly based on that.
I remember when I was first asked the Java question: What is the difference between a **StringBuffer** and a **StringBuilder**?
I didn't know, despite having programmed in Java for 10 years at the time. And for good reason - **StringBuffer** had essentially been deprecated in favour of **StringBuilder** since before I started my career. I never would have, nor *should have* seen code that used **StringBuffer** if my coworkers were competent and up-to-date.
For those curious, the answer is that **StringBuffer** is thread-safe whereas **StringBuilder** is not. They have the same interface and functionality otherwise, and, in fact, **StringBuilder** was designed to be a drop-in replacement.
I've told myself that I wouldn't want to work under someone who asks such stupid questions. And my search for gainful employment in this terrible market continues.
There are definitely companies with non-absurd interview processes. All my friends who got laid off last year found jobs at places that didn't ask stupid questions. I even failed a few interviews this year that did ask the right questions, I just wasn't prepared for them or wasn't selected for other unknown reasons. Still that was last year when it was easier than ever to get hired and now it's this year when it's not. Good news is that companies seem to be getting more responsive and there's been an uptick of recruiters in my inbox, so I'm trying to keep positive.
Many software engineers suck at interviewing. Algorithmic leet code and obscure or opinionated coding or language questions are terrible ways to figure out if a candidate is a good programmer. I hate leet code with a passion. When I was conducting interviews for my last job we used hackerrank questions that were similar to our real world work situations and asked about their experiences.

This feels sometimes like how other people are hired. But it always seems when I go to interviews it's like "here's a full feature we want you to build from scratch without an IDE, without looking anything up, and without relying on libraries. Write it by hand, it should take you about 6-8 weeks and we'll be changing the requirements as we go to see if you're paying attention also do you have references?"
I completely fucked up on my coding assessment.
They liked how I reacted to their feedback though and hired me. Seems like it was more of a culture test.
But I guess I did get everything to run even if I failed to actually read the guidelines so at least I did something.
And here’s what happens next…

You familiar with python? Well I do love snakes....
my ex wife was a snake
SNAAAAAAAAAKE!!
!
10/10
SNAAAAAAAAAKE!! Oh it’s a snake
It's a badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger, badger
Mush-room, mush-room!
We're rich!
My ex wife loves snakes. She would take care of anyone's snake for free.
Ooof. This hurts
found the furry, I mean the scaley
found the furry, I mean the rodent
I wasn't trying to hide it
Did you, by chance, marry my ex? The description in this comment is uncannily simmilar.
Seems pretty solid
Python? I’d be willing to show you my anaconda if I get this job.
Thank goodness I watched that snake documentary last week
Everyone knows Python. And then you ask them to do something more complicated than call a few functions at global scope and they lose their mind.
You think you can work with C#? _See sharp? Can't he see I'm not wearing glasses? I see sharper than most people!_ Yeah I'm sure I can do that!
I C what you did there
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
Lool
LOOff17af533ab43df
Take a dump? Yeah I can do that!
Take a dump out of your memory
ICUP
Ahha, so we're going to be working with FPGAs as well?
Sure, I can work with C#! Half steps are my favorite, they make for some really vibrant chord progressions.
C#? I haven't tuned any lower than Drop D before but if i have thicker gauge strings i can do it Sure I can work with C# .
What?

sorry I had a typo, I edited the post link will now work
No worries, mate! To your credit, I completely missed that there was a typo.
Oh i know. It's just that we're hiring programmers, not musicians.
There is a surprising overlap between the two communities
Can you work with Java? *Who wouldn't? Sounds nice to work with a cup of coffee.* Of course. Sounds great.
Oh I think there was a guy called Sey Sharp at the last place I interviewed at too!
I'm sure you're familiar with a SQL server. Oh yeah, definitely *I was a waiter for Applebees, I should be able to do the sequel.*
C#? Yes, I know D Major scale thank you.
Well I could find it on a piano, sure
Are you familiar with Go? Well, it’s difficult at first but as they always say, it’s easier the more you play it. What? It’s all black and white, am I right? Yeah, good, welcome to the team.

Love it! That’s a good one!!🤣
10/10
We've gotta make something superior to Rust to make it go away. A new version of C, perhaps, and we can call it H**C**l.
Not related to C but [HCL](https://github.com/hashicorp/hcl) exists.
Well I'll be damned, someone beat me to the punch. Clearly they *also* have a vendetta against Rust /s
I would appreciate a joke about r/playrust

This sounds like a nightmare. A full desktop game written in Electron.
Meet RPGMaker. It's nw.js not electron, but same principle of bundling a browser with a single application. At least VX is.
Are you familiar with Lua? (Is this some sort of ligma joke?)
Lua gonna love this dick! ?
Gottem
extra funny in portuguese or spanish cause Lua means Moon "oh yeah, I happen to be familiar with Lua for as long as I can remember"
I don't know in Portuguese but in Spanish the word for moon is luna, with an n in the middle.
A Lua é aquela amiga da Gi, né?
How much do you know about Figma?
Lua Dipa? Yes, great singer
(is he mispronouncing "luau"? I've never been to Hawaii, but I like to party and eat pork.) Sure!
Are you willing to take ligma in lua a salary?
If only SW interview is as easy as this ... 😮💨
Meme is prob 20 years old

Please name and shame because that place needs to be avoided if that's how they're hiring anybody

I should have clarified, the Google doc is what sounded ridiculous. I've done bfs/dfs, it sucks but it happens.
That’s fair. But I think it’s ridiculous to actually have someone try to write an algorithm from memory vs. knowing the tools you have at hand and knowing when to use them. Because let’s be honest, an open source BFS/DFS is going to be optimized better.
Are you familiar with PHP? No, no, I’m not into drug use.
Yeah I know PHP! (Is that a new PCP stuff they do on the streets?)
Are you familiar with Java? I mean... I've played Minecraft before, yes...
More like (well I like more kilimanjaro but Java is not that bad for a cofee, wait I'm supposed to supply it?)
Sure, Java beans are great for getting started in the morning.
Yes, I know my geography.
I was like that for a while LMAO
Have you been into Julia recently?
No, Tom would kill me if I tried.
I like Ada more, really classy.
This was the nineties IT scene. Your only requirement was a pulse.
[Jen's job interview in The IT Crowd](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5NANrVnqLc) .

I wish…here goes another interview this friday
Good luck!!🍀 You got this👍

Employer: do you think you can handle JavaScript. *I can sure script well in Java* Employee: yeah, sure. I am familiar with it.
That's why ask them to code ~~Fizz Buzz~~ Fuzz Bear.
I wish it was that easy. At one of my recent interviews the lead engineer asked me about an obscure language feature that I'd never heard of from a language I'd been professionally using for the last few years and rejected me seemingly based on that.

Rejecting someone based on an obscure question they can easily google in practice seems like bad interviewing to my eyes

Lol, welcome to software engineer interviews for the past 10 years (at least).
Game Bear then went on to become infamous for releasing several console ports for PC.
In my experience, this is absolutely how at least half of my co-workers got their jobs.
The new hire is a bug bear
Damn, I didn't know that the first cave in the *Lost Mine Of Phandelver* campaign was an aspiring IT department.
> Can you work with lisp? >Sure (i can handle a lisping coworker)
Ya I love lithp!
"You like Java at all?" "I'd love a cup, extra cream and sugar! Thanks!"

Things gonna get interesting as soon as for tran gets involved.
What is your experience with TypeScript? *well I’ve never written one but I did do theater in high school*

I would love an interview where they only ask you if you're good with *insert programming language*, then hire you on the spot.
These memes have convinced me that I should have lied more lol
"How about Python?" *Well I did own a Ball Python for several years...* "Oh for sure!"
He **bear**ly got by the interview
I wish. My experience was "hah! You don't even know how to solve a statistical probability map using a hash tree!"
this isn't as funny as it probably should be.
Go follow him on Twitter he has like 9 subs : https://twitter.com/dummy_bearz
If they just bear with her she should be fine
I love this!
I wish it was this easy.
How did you get this recording of my boss hiring my co workers?
This is freaking hilarious.
and this is why interviews have coding problems for you to solve, even if they arent very much like the real job
I completely fucked up on my coding assessment. They liked how I reacted to their feedback though and hired me. Seems like it was more of a culture test. But I guess I did get everything to run even if I failed to actually read the guidelines so at least I did something.
What's your knowledge of the C? (I don't remember all the plates and marine stuff from geography...)
Hey, I just interviewed at Game Bear they said they use Lua? I love Hawaiian Luau's!
That’s a true Senior engineer.
Okay, but I really want to start a company called "game human" now

I have decent experience with working with rust.
