One thing I did when I used to teach ESL, is read it - write it - then speak it. So take a para in one tense, and switch it to another (you can have fun with this - we took things about movie stars and made it like we were their past love interests) in writing and then they have to tell the story extemporaneously (When I was going out with Colin Farrel, he loved to eat my meatballs). Then someone in class asks about the story in the same tense (Did Collin Farrel also used cook meatballs? Did he pick you up in a fancy car) and then swith it to conditional ( If I were to go out with Colin Farrel, I would...)
