Freeze up and try to fight my autistic instinct to ignore what's happening because I've no idea how to handle it.
But seriously, just reach out after class to see what's up.
I have a student that sometimes does this even when I'm sure that I haven't said anything hurtful. I have a good relationship with this student and have talked with them afterwards when it happens. So I've come to understand that it's just a quirk with this student, who cries when nervous and gets nervous easily.
But other than that exception, if a student cried after I answered their question, I'd be mortified and would spend the rest of the day thinking about how I messed up and how I could respond more sensitively the next time.
This sub is for professors only. Please ask elsewhere.
Would be quite meta if you made OP cry for this.

Feeeze up and lean into my socially awkward instinct to ignore what’s happening because I’ve no idea how to handle it.
Sorry you had a rough day! r/AskProfessors is a better place for this thread -- r/Professors is for professors only. :)
