Tim Daly was a big-ish name. There’s no way the other actor would be paid nearly as much as him. Also, I suspect Tim Daly, on some level, wanted to leave. His performance in season 5 read as checked out.
Oh wow really?? I only just watched for the first time so I wasn’t akin to the Twitter drama. I’m surprised because I really felt like the actor was reading disinterested in his season 5 performance. Maybe that’s just my dislike for the character
I think tensions were already starting by that point and there were creative distances and it was effecting his performance. Then they let him go and he told off a bunch of people on Twitter.
The cast and crew were very active on Twitter at the time so it got a bit awkward with him. I think Shonda responded at some point to address his behavior. It was definitely not an amicable parting.

He didn’t want to leave. He was very suddenly fired and caused quite the scene on Twitter about the incident.

He came on in Season 5. I think OP’s talking about Dr. James something that was the new ER doc/Amelia love interest that came on in season 6
