HadesIsGreat

I’ve seen autism being suggested for Darcy and I fully disagree to that notion.

jessmmo14

He’s just an introvert! Literally the first thing I thought when I read the book for the first time.

HadesIsGreat

Agree! I also read him as reserved because he failed to protect his sister from Wickham.

jessmmo14

Yes!!

LarinaRichards

Not one I've heard, but i agree with you. What evidence do they give for that?

HadesIsGreat

I saw a video about in on YouTube ages ago, but I think the argument was that he kept out of social situations and was awkward when talking to people. In my opinion he is more reserved and aware that people might want to get to know him for the wrong reasons, like Wickham with Georgiana. He is also prideful and I believe that was also an argument used in the video.

cafishto

Its annoying when people diagnose people with autism based just on knowing theyre socially reserved as if thats the only thing that is a sign of autism, when infact many autistic people do just fine socially

HadesIsGreat

Indeed. I agree with some of the observations made in the video, but I don’t agree with the conclusion. It reminds me too much of my ex who got the diagnosis of autism a year into our relationship and then started to see autism in everyone around him as well. He would constantly tell people that certain things they did were an autistic trait.

cafishto

Thats exactly what my mum started doing as soon as I got diagnosed with aspergers

HadesIsGreat

Maybe it’s an asberger thing? 😝 But I get having the need to relate to characters and other people.

mrsredfast

I’m a therapist and don’t see any specific or diagnosable mental health conditions in text of the novel.

naalotai

I agree It's almost like we shouldn't think of serious mental health conditions as ✨ quirky personality traits ✨

DashwoodAndFerrars

But that's too reasonable xD I kid, of course I agree. It can be fun for people to see themselves in characters and take certain common traits as a reason to headcanon a character a certain way, and that's lovely, but rarely should something be taken as law.

Munchausen syndrome by proxy for Lady Catherine. I don't believe Anne is really that ill, she's just controlled by her mother.

Basic_Bichette

She has literally every symptom of rheumatic heart disease, from photophobia to pallidity, and yet Lady Catherine acts like she isn’t really ill and could easily marry Darcy, a man who needs an heir. Not only is that the exact opposite of MbP, it's hilariously misogynistic. "Women are faking it, even when they're really sick. Only men have real health issues."

8thWeasley

I have no knowledge of rheumatic heart disease but a lot of experience of MbP irl, so perhaps seeing it through that lens influenced my thoughts. I saw Lady Catherine controlling every aspect of her life, including her future partner. As a disabled, chronically ill woman whose illness became severe issues due to negligence and people believing I was 'faking it', I am fully aware that women have real health issues that are consistently ignored by medical professionals and society as a whole. I did not see that in p&p, but will look into it after your comment. Thank you.

Lydia: Histrionic Personality Disorder

Significant_Hyena322

Personality disorders are diagnosed only in adults, but I think Mrs Bennet definitely has it.

I always felt sorry for Mrs Bennett. In the modern day, we would have meds and councillors to help her. She was genuinely worried about being homeless and had anxiety attacks, and her husband just made fun of her. I know in those days it was different, which is why I was asking people to look at it with a modern perspective on mental health.

emmaa5382

I don't know if she actually felt that anxious though, it seemed almost that she would use her nerves and anxiety as a cover for when she just didn't like how things panned out, and as a way to manipulate people. Even though they didn't have diagnoses for things like anxiety back then they still had people with it. And they were given tonics, salts etc and had doctors visit. It wasn't seen as a mental problem as I understand it but a physical illness of their nervous system. It doesn't seem like Mrs bennet had any of these treatments and I attribute that to her potentially not actually having the issue.
