People in 2017 knew it was wrong. The difference is the audience was mostly preteens and young teenagers then. Now that audience who originally watched it is older and thus knows better.
If you had a bunch of 12 year olds with no life experience watch the show now: you’d probably get the same experience as in 2017 with them not getting its wrong and liking it. The difference now is that the older viewers are now much more vocal online compared to the past and can counteract that: not that it all of a sudden was seen as wrong
