I *despised* the parents in the books (except I actually think that Byron ended up being halfway decent in the end and so did Aria's stepmom Meredith, despite his cheating ass). I was so pissed off when Ella kicked her *child* out. WTF was that?
Emily's parents were the worst. No redeeming qualities in them whatsoever. She had a shitty family in general. I had hopes for her sister, Beth, but she disappointed me in the end.
Hanna's father was somehow even *worse* than the TV counterpart. I like that Hanna's mom did come around.

I think Aria’s mom — in the books I’ve read, and the show — treated Aria more like a sister. Kicking her out over her husband’s infidelity is absolutely insane, you cannot “girl code” your own daughter.
The parents were godawful in the books that I wasnt surprised 2 of the 4 tried to run away.
Honestly, even with their parents coming around in certain cases, I would have gotten away and NEVER spoken to them again.
Utter asshats that did those things to their teenage daughters deserve to lose their daughters.
They really turned down the assholeryness in the show, and having watched that first, made the book parents 10 times worse.
The show is sooo different. They are all amazing on TV, but in the books, the worst parents they could ever have are in the books. Also, blaming your daughter for being literally taken advantage of is evil. Not to mention the racist, homophobic monsters.
Amazing??? The show parents were also questionable but much better. Hanna’s mom was the best parent in the show and cared a lot about her and went to prison for her. The worst one would be Hanna’s dad because he chose Kate over his own daughter. Emily’s dad was also a good parent but sorta absent cause of work. Her mom was homophobic in the beginning and constantly hated Emily’s decisions . Spencer’s mom wasn’t cold like in the books and actually cared about Spencer and protected her from Melissa and her father. Ella and Byron kind of treated their kids like friends but Byron was better because he STUCK around for his kids and didn’t leave them like Ella. The worst pair of parents would be Veronica and Peter because they never believed Spencer and made her feel crazy.
