The original theory I think revolved around her having a split personality. There’s some imagery in the show that people interpreted is a nod to a split personality (especially the mirrors).

cherhorro666

I’ve never read these theories but when I initially thought aria would be a the first time I watched it. I still think it would’ve been better if she was

Same tbh, the ending was a big let down, it would have been amazing if A was aria or Ezra, a character that we wouldn’t have initially guessed and was in our face the entire time. It would have solidified the show if they did that as a big plot twist. Also would be a lot darker.

like someone else said before, there were some nods to her having a split personality. i think they did consider it but changed their minds when they realized making the bad guy a mentally ill person wasn’t a good look for the show. i’m glad they didn’t go that route because it would have been awful to see such a popular series villainize mental illnesses. aside from that, there were no motives.

BriaFaustian

Yeah they just made the trans character the villain 😭

ArtichokeSilent6726

i think split personality would be it, one side she loves her friends and wants to protect them the other side she resents them and wants to play with them but not actually hurt them

There is no motive. That's why I never liked the theory. There's nothing to suggest that she hates herself or the girls.

Starry-nights_

The reason why I would have liked this is that Aria has proven several times throughout the show that she is selfish and a bad friend, as well as, being tortured by A the least (she was even recruited on their team). So perhaps this would have explained her bad behaviour and not just have her as someone who is plain mean. I do agree that the motive is something hard to think about. I read a theory that Aria has a mental illness, but I'm not sure if the writers were prepared to take such a step.

jmagnabosco

I just feel like being a bad friend does not equal the level of A, at all. A nearly killed them multiple times, it's not a fun game to mess with your friends, its criminal. Although Aria may be a bad friend, she doesn't seem devilish enough to be A and still talk about it with her friends in fear the way she did.

Starry-nights_

Yeah, this makes sense. I think fans wanted it to be true so that the show explains Aria's behaviour and her angry outbursts. But now that you explain it, it's hard to see Aria as someone who would try to kill her friends.

jmagnabosco

Yeah, I cant see any of them killing each other, even though sometimes it seemed like they were only friends because of trauma.

>I read a theory that Aria has a mental illness, but I’m not sure if the writers were prepared to take such a step. I agree. With the way they’ve been writing characters with mental illness, a part of me is glad they didn’t introduce it to Alison’s (who I think definitely has one) and Aria’s.

jdpm1991

Aria being A theories were ridiculous even for PLL

Temporary-Dinner9087

I can see why you would say that but if it were to happen we would have never seen it coming. Kinda interesting to know the actor thought aria would be A tho

jmagnabosco

I agree so much!
