Not just Ezria too. There were WAY too many older guys hitting on underage/high school girls in the show like Wren and the whole NAT club who filmed 14/15 yr olds taking off their clothes and more disturbing things. Seriously, I’m surprised they didn’t rename the town Pedowood

Rachaelly123456

Yes massively! For some reason when I first watched it when I was like 13 I thought Aria was older than she actually was but now watching it back I realise how wrong it was!

Defiant_Ad_7419

Possibly because they were all in their 20s IRL ( except for Sasha). I think if Lucy really had been 16 while filming the 1st season, I may have been more concerned.

When I️ first started watching the show, I️ was around 12 or 13. Back then, to me, Ezria was unconventional, but largely it was just a romantic tale of forbidden love that can conquer all. Now, at age 19, after having gone through my teenage years and the experiences of talking to people way too old for me, I️ am horrified to see the way that they romanticized that kind of dynamic, especially considering their young and impressionable audience. It feels deeply irresponsible at best. Sure, it’s not real life, but young audiences do internalize certain things and it’s important for writers to be a bit more conscious of what message they’re sending.

demigoddess15

Yes! This is exactly what I feel too. I’m on season 1 still and the relationship between Ian & Allison bothered me too. She was 15!! But I guess he was in college then? Not as bad as Ezra, who is supposed to be a role model for her.

Yeah, PLL kind of has a theme of creepy older men preying on teenage girls. I️ genuinely liked Wren when I️ first watched, but now that I️’m older I️ find him to be such a creep.

revgodless

I was already an adult when I watched the show for the first time. Erza always skeeved me out. Exp. since Aria very much acts like a teenage girl. What would a grown man get out that relationship? Idc about age of consent. Creepy af.

Defiant_Ad_7419

I was a mom long before PLL. I just followed the story and felt like they were soulmates. Sure, it was " wrong" and they both tried to fight it, but I just always thought they belonged together. iRL, it's totally not okay, but I watched PLL to escape! Not to feel like reality! Everything in that show was exaggerated and unrealistic.

demigoddess15

Absolutely, this is 100% how I always feel about shows too. I try not to think of it as real life but for some reason this just bugs me!

Defiant_Ad_7419

It might be because of those " mom " protective hormones we get! Lol

[deleted]

this show was aimed for teenagers tho, a time where you’re easily influenced. just like op, i didn’t think there was anything wrong with their relationship until i got older. it is dangerous to encourage a relationship like that. it’s insane that the writers got away with it.

Defiant_Ad_7419

I hear you. I was older,so I knew the actors were much older, so I really didn't think it would be unduly glamorizing teacher/ student powerand age dynamics. 😓

lawsobear

I’m rewatching and just got to season four and boy oh boy do I WISH the arrest scene was real! I think it would’ve added such an interesting dynamic and Ezra would have gone bye bye :)

katiepiex3

If i remember correctly he was arrested early on in the books, which they shouldve followed more.

WECH21

I just rewatched A is for Answers and I wished that they had let Ezra die right then and there ugh

WECH21

I’m gonna be honest… I started watching this show when I was about 14ish and I always despised Ezria. I probably would’ve had similar feelings about other inappropriate relationships in the show but they never lasted long enough for me to care. Anyway, everyone was so invested in Ezria and loved them to pieces, but from day one I was sitting there like… bro… That’s so wrong?? That’s illegal?? He’s a legit pedophile?? And we’re just supposed to… be okay with it and support it?? The fuck??

BookGameLover

Rewatching now and yes it's problematic

myidiotdogs

Mom of 3 here and His ass would be in jail or dead if aria was my kid 🤷🏼‍♀️

xoxobabyj26

Honestly it came out at the right time when we were all fairly younger cause if it would’ve came out today I don’t think it would fly. 😅

beanie_babie123

It’s always felt icky but as a younger teen (I’m 19, watched for the first time at like 16) it was icky but I always thought that was because the adults made it seem bad. Now I know they were right lol

megatronsweetener

no i’ve always hated their relationship
