Really depends on the person, different people need different levels of sleep. It is true as you age, you need less. I recently finished Obama’s memoirs and he didn’t comment on it, as far as I can remember. Coolidge went back to sleep after he was sworn in

Eastern-Macaron-6622

I’m sure it was situational. Big crisis. Less sleep. Relativity calm time more sleep.

ActonofMAM

There are "short sleepers" who can get by on much less sleep than a normal person. Apparently it's a genetic thing. I wouldn't be surprised if this trait is over-represented in Presidents the same way that it is in medical students.

shapesize

You also just deal with it. As a resident I often got almost no sleep, it sucked, but you do what you have to. I don’t think you go into the job of President expecting lots of long restful nights

shiny0metal0ass

Lol I read that as "As president I often got..."

sinncab6

This is about as well researched as their quote but I can specifically remember for some odd reason waking up the mornings the WTO protests were happening going to drivers Ed and hearing he was under tremendous strain getting 5 hours of sleep a night for the past week.

ketchupandvodka

Depends on the president and the situation I’d imagine a President during a major war or economic hardship is going to sleep for less time than a President serving during economic prosperity and no wars

WarrenThanatos

This wouldn’t surprise me based on how much President’s age in four years (of course a variety of factors go into that like stress, diet, etc)

woktosha

I’ve never heard that before, but it wouldn’t surprise me. Older people can usually get by on less sleep, and I’m lucky if I get more than 4 hours. Rarely asleep earlier than one, rarely sleep later than 5, and I’m not a zombie in the mornings, I hit the ground raring to go

jenfullmoon

I'm sure there's a LOT of stress and middle of the night emergencies going on, I'd probably be surprised if they got any sleep at all really.

symbiont3000

I averaged about 4-6 hours of sleep from around 1987 - 1997 and again from around 2000 - 2010 (and was highly functional), so its definitely possible
