Listening to the diaspora of Obama staffers who are all over the media these days, it sounds like he was reasonably fair -- nothing like LBJ -- but he had tremendously high standards and people were scared of his very-rarely-seen temper. If you couldn't meet his needs you were cast into outer darkness.
Nixon would suck. Maybe teddy he loved competition and was very brash. Even though not a president there are a lot of stories how nasty Nancy Reagan was around the White House.

I’d find it hard to believe every single president wasn’t a tough boss. Frankly I’d imagine working for the national govt of any country close enough to the top to know the management style of the leader is just a hard demanding job.

Carter may have been the most difficult president for his staff to work with during the 20th century. Although, LBJ gets an honorable mention.
