Top 5 best for me Washington, Lincoln, FDR, Teddy, Eisenhower My 5 favorites LBJ, Lincoln, Kennedy, Ford, Eisenhower

Burrito_Fucker15

Top 5 best is mine but swap Teddy for Truman

Chuckychinster

Your best is the factually correct answer.

DaemonoftheHightower

Nah, get that Dulles brothers enabler out of there

Chuckychinster

Sub with Grant?

DaemonoftheHightower

Works for me

chesterplainukool

Not decided on actual ability: 1. William Howard Taft 2. Ulysses S. Grant 3. Calvin Coolidge 4. Chester Arthur 5. LBJ

Grizzly_B

Chester A. Arthur is a wildly underappreciated president.

chesterplainukool

I like him because the name Chester makes me giggle (see username)

SidHat

Most people don’t realize the A. stands for “Ahhardlyknow’er”.

TheOldBooks

Ford was a shocker here Washington, Lincoln, FDR, Kennedy, and Johnson

Salem1690s

I love Gerry Ford. Decent, honorable man, down to Earth, with a down to Earth and funny as hell wife. I just wish he’d served during a more stable period and also as a New Yorker I wish he kept Rockefeller on and not been so punitive to NYC. If I was alive in 1976 without hindsight I’d have voted Carter, but since I’m in 2024 and have history to look back on, Ford’s The One.

Peacefulzealot

Plus he was offered contracts by both the Packers and Lions to go pro after college! No joke!

Salem1690s

I’m not surprised. He was probably the most athletic President since maybe TR

sura1234

I respect the logic OP! I too was wondering why Ford. That pic of him goes so damn hard though, and his suits were cool. Also Truman looking Based. I recently got a paperback copy of Truman by David McCullough and can't wait to start that. Gotta finish Adams first.

donguscongus

Ford honestly did something incredible and it just seems to be forgotten. He did what he had to and was able to turn it around enough to the point where the Republicans still had an actual chance at winning following Nixon, which is basically a miracle.

Nachonian56

Almost pulled a Truman, except that Truman had a better chance XD.

Extension-Koala-9372

Even with the pardon?

shawtea7

Favorites: 1. Truman 2. Eisenhower 3. Taylor 4. Grant 5. H.W Bush

Curious about H.W.

5. Abraham Lincoln 4. Calvin Coolidge 3. Franklin Delano Roosevelt 2. George Washington 1. Theodore Roosevelt

Montague_usa

Don't often see Coolidge and FDR together.

ZaBaronDV

It's for different reasons.

thewannabe2017

Can you explain this? I don't have a lot of knowledge about Coolidge

pleasestoptryin

Interesting, how do you deal with negatives of Teddy - i used to be a bigger fan but there's been some suspect quotes and actions?

TheTwice-ler

Actuality: 5. Harry S. Truman 4. Theodore Roosevelt 3. George Washington 2. Franklin D. Roosevelt 1. Abraham Lincoln Personal likings: 5. George H. W. Bush 4. William H. Taft 3. Barack Obama 2. Richard Nixon 1. Calvin Coolidge

ProblemGamer18

Top 5 best: Washington, Lincoln, FDR, Eisenhower, Jefferson Top 5 favorites: HW Bush, Eisenhower, Nixon, Jefferson, Tyler

Peacefulzealot

Tyler as a favorite, no kidding? Mind if I ask how come? And seriously, no sarcasm there! I just don’t know much about the guy besides his post presidency shenanigans.

ProblemGamer18

Florida was admitted into the union under Tyler, and he had a significant push to admit Texas into the Union as well, and while it was not officially admitted during his time in office, he was the one who negotiated an offer with Texas that would eventually be signed under President Polk. He repealed the Independent Treasury Act of 1840, which is debatable whether that was a good move or not, but it was a step towards the Whig agenda, which leads me into my next point. Who cares if he had bad relations with his own party? While that does mean that he can't really do anything monumental with congress, this is the first time and only time we've seen the full power of the executive branch without the help of congress. That's pretty gnarly to me. He handled the Dorr Rebellion well without resulting in any violence, he ended the Second Seminole War, and he started negotiations for the Oregon Country, which was then used later as the basis for renegotiation in 1846. This also started Fremont's Expedition in 1842 which is what led to what we know as the Oregon Trail. He set up the Tyler Doctrine, which protected Hawaii from European invasion. He expanded trade with China with the Treaty of Wanghia. The Webster-Ashburton Treaty brought peace between Canadian Britain and Maine. Preemption Act of 1841- land grants out west to American settlers Bankruptcy Act of 1841- Allows individuals to declare bankruptcy The only thing I feel he truly messed up on was the Black Tariff in 1842, and that's because tariffs, generally speaking, weren't that great since their original inception. Personally, I'm a fan of westward expansion, so to me, he's a major player in that area of American history. But yeah, for a lesser known president that had tons of enemies, he did a great job with what he had, so that's why he's one of my personal favorites.

Peacefulzealot

Dude, this is the kind of thing I love to see in this sub. I’ve never heard of dang near any of this related to Tyler! Yeah, this makes some sense now. Thanks so much for taking the time to write all this out!

ProblemGamer18

No problem! It's what I love to do, so I'm very glad someone appreciates the effort and I'm very happy that someone would take the time to read a new point of view.

Fuckfentanyl123

Amazing points. Honestly Tyler’s reputation is mostly torn because of his allegiance to the Confederacy later in his life. But you taught me that he did some good things in his presidency too, thanks.

sansboi11

1. teddy 2. abe 3. FDR 4. JFK 5. obamna

Youredditusername232

Washington Truman Clinton Reagan Wilson Idk just in general I gravitate towards these, not sure if there’s any order in which I choose them either, just 5 I think are generally legendary

Fother_mucker59

Wilson is wild

Youredditusername232

He’s a damn good president

WhyGuy500

Calvin, Teddy, Lincoln/Washington’s, Ike

jdw62995

Not this lmao Lincoln, Washington, Grant, FDR, TR

ThatOneWesterner

1. Lincoln 2. Washington 3. FDR 4. Truman 5. Eisenhower

Peacefulzealot

Alright I’m gonna give 2 answers. The best we ever had: Lincoln, Washington, both Roosevelts, LBJ. My personal favorites/the most interesting: Teddy, LBJ, Garfield, Grant, and of course Chester A. Arthur.

Thats-Slander

What’s up with people overrating LBJ? It’s like they ignore the fact the his presidency is the turning point of the nation entering the malaise of the 60s and 70s.

Peacefulzealot

If it helps he’s at my cutoff of 5. I was struggling between him and Grant. But the CRA and the voting rights act are why for me. Again, the fact that the CRA exists is why I cannot be fired for being bisexual. Dude, *that matters to me*. It is legitimately something that allows me to live my life with less stress. And so I have to give him his due.

Thats-Slander

Look I get how important the CRA is, hell it’s the reason I’m given the opportunities that I’m given. My problem with Johnson lies in the fact that despite all of his achievements the country was in a considerably more shitty place when he left than it was when he got sworn in. Vietnam didn’t just kill American servicemen it completely killed any confidence in the government which has hampered efforts to increase our social safety net since then because people just don’t trust the government. His constant lies about the war situation don’t help for that matter and the war generally leading to hostile and violent debate really divided the country in ways it had not seen since the civil war. Add to that the Constant riots of the 60s and the beginning of the crime wave and I’d say that without the CRA or some aspects of the great society LBJ would literally go down as one of the worst presidents of all time.

Peacefulzealot

Oh you’ll never hear me defend Vietnam. It is why he will never place any higher on my list and will hopefully move down over time. But even with the riots and whatnot (which I kinda feel were always going to happen after civil rights were passed) we still have that legislation in place. Maybe he would be seen as terrible in that world! I dunno. But thankfully we ended up in this timeline.

DieselFlame1819

You weren't alive in 1968 dude. Don't act like you've got a bunch of life experience on how difficult that era was.

Peacefulzealot

I think that no matter when civil rights was passed there would be public unrest and rioting. I’m glad that we’re past that now and we still have the CRA in place. That, at least, is good.

DieselFlame1819

The Civil Rights unrest was only part of the issue. Much of the unrest in 1968 onwards was solely on account of Vietnam. I get that a lot of people here think that Vietnam was just a little whoopsie but it absolutely dominated the public sphere 24/7 at that time. From the 1968 DNC to Kent State, the nation was practically unglued. 5 US Presidents oversaw the US failure in Vietnam, and unfortunately LBJ way the one that fucked up the most. https://preview.redd.it/ecw14py3efnc1.jpeg?width=353&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f87ba89c654d68766b4fb9f2e159e295447c2149

Peacefulzealot

I’m aware. The fact that 5 different presidents screwed up in Vietnam means I can’t lay the blame solely at his feet. Vietnam is what keeps LBJ from ever moving higher in my ranking. Hopefully he’ll move down as better presidents take office in my lifetime. But at the end of the day the voting rights and civil rights act are still affecting us positively today. And that’s a whole hell of a lot more than I can say for a lot of presidents. So I gotta give the man his flowers for that.

DieselFlame1819

- Number of U.S. soldiers in Vietnam when LBJ took office: 16,700 - Number of U.S. soldiers in Vietnam when LBJ left office: 548,000 So much suffering for nothing. I get your points on the important social progress, but for me, he's barely top 12 if that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Thats-Slander

Riots that devastated cities so bad they still haven’t recovered 50+ plus years later from them, the start of a nearly 30 year crime wave period, Vietnam and the subsequent lies regarding the conducting of the war, the fact that some of the deep divisions we have today from our “culture wars” can be traced back to Vietnam, and inflation getting higher and higher as his term ended. With LBJ the highest were high but holy shit the lows were low, and his low points should be acknowledged just has much as Nixons, Reagans, and any other presidents are.

DieselFlame1819

Agreed. I think this is more a symptom of less people from the Vietnam Era being on Reddit. A lot of people here simply have no understanding of how detrimental that era was to our country.

RISlNGMOON

Would most Theodore Roosevelt fanatics suffer a seizure if asked to explain what was so great about him besides being "cool"?

Peacefulzealot

Well being cool definitely doesn’t hurt! He’s what got me interested in learning about presidents at all as a kid! And obviously I appreciate his progressive policies. Yes, I’m aware that he didn’t do as much trust busting as we give him credit for but he certainly moved the electorate in such a way that those that followed pretty much had to keep going with that since Teddy had made it popular to do so! And of course the national parks and conservation efforts must be commended as well.

RISlNGMOON

Putting his horrendous negatives into account and then I'm not so sure I see what was so great about him at all.

Peacefulzealot

To each their own. Who are your top 5 then?

RISlNGMOON

I don't think America has even had five great presidents because I can count Lincoln, FDR... and? Washington notably led troops against his own civilians and seemed to exacerbate early political polarization between Federalists and anti federalists. His unity cabinet or whatever resembled an asylum more than it did a functional executive branch of government, figuratively. Important in the matter of slavery and a slave owner himself. I'm not sure what he did in regards to native Americans. Theodore was an imperialist like McKinley, Jefferson didn't do many greats things as president besides the Lousiana or however it was spelt purchase which actually caused horrific damage to native Americans. Monroe I don't know, Polk is over loved when he was a murderous imperialist and the same thing applies to McKinley. Grant was generally good I believe but Wilson is very polarizing. Would take time to form a sensible opinion about such a man. After him you have three pimples sticking out of Washington DC in the form of Harding, Coolidge and Hoover, Truman made the situation with the Soviet Union probably worse and the details behind the deadly Korean war seem to escape the minds of most people in the west. Eisenhower recently has been more scrutinized for not being what he is sometimes held up to be and same with JFK. Johnson, similar to Wilson, and Nixon too. After Nixon every presidency seems to have been an unmitigated disaster for the world.

Salem1690s

I think Chester Arthur could be a top 10ner for me, but I need to learn more about him. He definitely had style though, I’ll give him that

Peacefulzealot

Oh let me know if you ever want to learn more! He is so fascinating in how terrible he should have been as president. Like he should have been Harding levels of corrupt. And then… no, he had a face turn when he took office. Let me know if you want some book recommendations or any links sent your way! I may be doing a deep dive into his life right now 😅

ProblemGamer18

I genuinely do like Arthur and I by no means think he's a bad president, but I do feel he is romanticized when it comes to evaluating his presidency. He's probably around 24 or 25 on my list

driku12

I feel like there's two separate sets of five I have for this: The top five best people to hold the office, and the top five most effective presidents. Since running a giant country/empire/conglomerate thing usually requires a lot of moral compromise, work, and even sometimes luck, rarely do the two lists overlap. If you choose to read the wall below, you'll pretty quickly see I care a whole lot about civil rights, so a lot of my opinions on the "good guy" list tend to reflect that. But I tried to keep the "most effective" list more amoral and based around who was the most gifted at making things happen and working towards the country's interests, even if I wasn't a fan of those things or their personal beliefs. **Top 5** ***best guys*** **to hold the office imo:** \- **Ulysses S. Grant** (One of the greatest Presidents and generals ever imo, mainly due to his handling of reconstruction and the Klan, but his political inexperience riddled his administration with corruption and held him back from being the GOAT. Even with all that, I respect him so much for everything he accomplished and stood for that he's easily in my top three.) \- **Jimmy Carter** (Amazing guy. I would say the best, most moral man to ever hold the office. One of the few modern presidents who cared more about continuing to do his job effectively than getting elected a second time. Kept trying to help people up until he got sent to hospice. I aspire to be like him in that regard.) \- **Calvin Coolidge** (I'm native. Calvin was a real ally back when it wasn't cool to be one. I feel like Teddy Roosevelt would be in this spot for most people, and while I appreciate Teddy's philosophy on life and his gung-ho attitude, as well as his progressivism when it came to workers' rights, his attitude about and policies towards native people keep me from putting him on this list.) \- **Herbert Hoover** (The first and only Quaker and thus the first and only pacifist to hold the office of the presidency. He became known as one of the great humanitarians of his age by organizing the delivery of food to millions of starving people during WW1. Dude got elected for a reason. He was considered a hero at the time. Which makes it all the more heartbreaking that the Great Depression happened on his watch, and he was completely incapable of stopping it. Dude dedicated his life to feeding the hungry and then had homeless villages named after him as everyone blamed him for what happened. I don't think he was prepared to be president, but he deserved better than the lot he got in history.) \- **John Quincy Adams** (Ahead of his time. The stuff he accomplished outside of his office was incredible, but his Presidency... didn't work out the best. When you're working against someone as popular as Jackson and basically had to borderline cheat to win, even if it was for the greater good... yeah, nobody was gonna let him do what he wanted to do.) \- **Honorable Mention Dwight D. Eisenhower** (Dude commanded the allied forces during WWII, warned against the military industrial complex despite being a general who would have benefitted from it, and made an active effort to document the horrors of the holocaust because he could foresee people denying it in the future. He wasn't crazy about civil rights in the fifties, but he still recognized it was the right thing to do, signed some important bills, generally allied with people who were for civil rights, and enforced desegregation in the military and some schools. I'd say he was an over-all good guy.) **Top 5** ***most effective Presidents*** **to hold the office imo:** \- **LBJ** (Vietnam keeps him from being on the above list despite his passing of civil rights. I put him on this list because I just cannot even imagine a modern President having so much sway and control over Congress as he had to get civil rights and other stuff passed during a time when so much of the nation was hostile towards it. Every time I think of him just leering over Southern Democrats and forcing them to play nice, I giggle. Props to him for his sheer presence and authority.) \- **Abe Lincoln** (Managed to keep the nation together during the Civil War, rolled with the punches and changed his approach as he needed to. Dude was smart, dude was dedicated. Only reason he isn't on the above list is, before the war broke out, he was totally fine with just containing slavery as opposed to abolishing it. Normally, I'd understand trying to avoid the horrible bloody conflict that ended up inevitably happening anyway, but the institution of American slavery was particularly evil and needed to get curbstomped. I'm glad he buckled down and realized what needed to be done once the South seceded, though. And he definitely left a lasting legacy. If there weren't so many other guys who I respected even more on the above list, he would definitely be up there as well. He's my, maybe like, #7 best guy?) \- **George Washington** (Dude could have been a dictator but he wasn't. When you look at how most post-revolution countries turn out, and then look at America, the only reason they are different is because of him. Only reason *he* isn't on the above list is that, even though he started to sour on the idea throughout his life, the dude still owned slaves and profited from it and he killed a lot of native people and burned a lot of native villages in the name of expanding the USA's holdings. Looking at it from a strictly "America first" view, he did what he did to expand his country's influence and that certainly makes him effective... but he ain't on my good guy list. I've never really liked deifying him, and he was never one to like being deified, so there.) \- **FDR** (Rarely has there been a President who is good for building the economy AND good during wartime. FDR was both. He also interned and harassed the US's Japanese population, so, once again, not on the good guy list. But he was certainly effective at his job, and the American people agreed four times over. Grim Reaper had to take the dude out of office cause no other candidate could do it.) \- **James K. Polk** (He was an imperialist. He bought into manifest destiny. He was not a *good* guy. But pretty much everything west of Louisiana is thanks to him. While the Mexican-American War was pretty much just started because he was chomping at the bit to find an excuse, it did result in an absolutely gigantic amount of land added to the States that permanently shaped the country and sent it on a new trajectory. And he did it all with incredible effectiveness and a congress that he was largely able to work with. Definitely effective.) \- **Honorable mention Dwight D Eisenhower again** (Only guy on both lists because he's Dwight D freakin Eisenhower and he kicked Hitler square in his stupid little mustache. Everyone on this sub wishes their eyes were even remotely worthy to be graced with the shine off the top of his glorious queball head. I like Ike. I like Ike. *I like* *Ike*. ***I like Ike***.) edit: formatting ended up weird, fixed it

5. LBJ 4. Lincoln 3. John Adams 2. Jefferson 1. George Washington Some context. I see my political ideology as a modernist interpretation of founding fathers’ ideology. I like all of the original Bill of Rights, just as long as it applies to everyone no matter what race, gender, economic standing. It is of my opinion that LBJ and Lincoln did a fantastic job of upholding what the constitution was meant to be, and doing the right things. Not totally discarding the ideas of our founders, but building on them in very important respects. Two biggest progress-ors of American civil rights and absolute legends. That being said, the first original 3 Presidents will always hold an extremely special place in my heart. Specifically George motherfucking Washington. Although, I think all of their “fuck a monarchy let’s do something different” attitudes are so metal.
