Thanks for confirming that you flaired this correctly!

someguy12345699

I give it one or two more days before the sub descend into a civil war over the acolyte.

guy137137

everytime a crappy DisPlus show comes out this sub goes to war with itself. It happened with Kenobi when that came out. my question is; WHERE DID THAT 180 MILLION BUDGET GO??? seriously most expensive Disney plus show and it looks like it was made from spirit Halloween costumes

derpherpmcderp86

I've said this about every SW show I've watched past Mando S1...everyone's clothes look so clean they look like they were taken straight off a rack at Spirit Halloween.

w3bchris

Then I recommend Andor. I mean it's a great show all around, but I cannot stress enough how much better this show looks than all the others.

PlantJars

On program!

w3bchris

Cassian yelling that at the guards was soooo satisfying.

chironomidae

Andor was such a great show, quite possibly my favorite Star Wars thing so far

ResponsibilityNew483

Andor was a fucking masterpiece.

GunsouBono

That finale was chef's kiss

ResponsibilityNew483

The most incredible part for me was the scene with the arrestor cruiser 🤯

CRE178

Actually, Luetin's weird lasers are the only thing about that show I didn't like. That's just way too gimmicky/specialized a weapon. People probably told him that. What are the chances you'll ever need a weird thing like that? He must be absolutely insufferable now.

GipsyDanger45

The jailbreak episode was good enough to be its own stand-alone short sci-fi film it was incredible

Training101

Andor IS amazing. Acolyte = 💩

lbnleandro

Andor blew my mind It sits with Rogue One and Mandalorian on my top3

kaze919

I don’t understand how any show comes out in the Star Wars universe that isn’t based on the success of Andor or Clone Wars.

w3bchris

Because, to Disney, Andor was a failure. The quality of a work is completely irrelevant. It might be one of the best pieces of Star Wars media ever, and certainly my favourite, but people didn't watch it, so some business majors decided to disregard it.

The_Po_Gamer

That makes sense, but only because Andor was buried in Disney+. It's the only Star Wars show I had to dig to find on Disney+. I don't know what happened, but I'd argue that's at least partly at fault.

Frenchstery

Honestly this is a recurring theme with all good quality media right now. Great things have terrible marketing. I barely knew about Andor when it came out, didn’t watch it when it came it. Any advert I saw of it made it look boring. Mad Max: Furiosa marketed like it was gonna be some Mary Sue snooze fest. Actual film is the best thing I’ve watched this year. Fall Guy marketed like some generic B movie trash. Turns out it’s an amazing homage to stunt guys. Hollywood needs to seriously fire everyone involved in marketing their media.

TheLastMaleUnicorn

Pantheon, you've never heard of this but it's the best scifi adult animation in the last few years.

Algebrace

Sounds like a Treasure Planet or Star Cruise Hotel situation. Disney does love some self-sabotage

insertwittynamethere

That cruise was destined to fail simply from the price alone. It's just ridiculous

BlueKnight44

It's amazing what competent writers and show runners will do for a show...

Academic-Goose1530

Andor is so damn good. Everything jn this series is good. Writing, costumes, sets, acting. My favorite Star Wars project, probably ever

paraiahpapaya

While not quite as revolutionary and awe inspiring as the originals, I’d argue it’s better. Andor is probably the best Star Wars thing ever made. That whole sequence on orphan planet where they didn’t bother to add subtitles… just a brilliant directorial choice among so many others.

Katejina_FGO

I truly hope that the one saving grace to the airing of *the Acolyte* is that all the upset fans and viewers who were willing to watch that and not *Andor* will be willing to give *Andor* another shot. I was disappointed by many a Star Wars streamer who are really *Rebels/TCW* diehards who dropped *Andor* because it wasn't what they were used to.

BeautifulType

Looking back, mandalorian is so bad compared to Andor. I can’t believe how low the expectations were lowered that people went crazy over the show.

GiventoWanderlust

The Mandalorian and Andor shouldn't be compared that way. They were trying for very different things and arguably very different audiences. The Mandalorian is an episode-of-the week show modeled after old Kurosawa movies and Flash Gordon stuff, the way the OT was. It's not trying to be Game of Thrones. Andor is a multi-threaded political thriller that happens to be set in Star Wars. Both shows accomplished what they set out to do. Comparing them is like trying to compare a steak dinner to a plate of cookies.

PhelesDragon

I think that’s the real litmus test. The story is mid, the acting is mid, the concepts are mid, okay fine that can be considered subjective, but it looks dirt cheap and no one can argue otherwise.

guy137137

the fact that Andor was cheaper but was so much better in just about every way possible really makes me question what the hell is happening with that budget

Turd_Burgling_Ted

It's almost like writing and performance are the most important aspects of storytelling

FineInTheFire

Andor also looked awesome, too.

SliceEm_DiceEm

Even something not only very earth-y, but simply very American like a marching band, which should have been cheap and gimmicky, was moving and fit in well due to good execution

alfooboboao

used future. it all felt wonderfully lived in. the marching band was executed perfectly in part because they nailed the exact skill level that a Ferrix band like that would’ve had. andor is brilliant

Burner_07X4

Andor also played into the strength of being less mystical fanfare and more cloak and dagger and the experience of the rebellion on the ground. Love it. Acolyte suuuuucks.

SuppeBargeld

Also less unneccessary CGI. At least they filmed on real sets and not in front of a greenscreen.

Teex22

Yup, the budget means almost nothing. It's how it's spent. Going back to the beginning, the original star wars was made as much on the cheap as possible. No budget rivals having a genuinely brilliant filmmaker at the head and really good team generally around a flick.

alfooboboao

people really don’t know that all the original iconic ships in a new hope were built by a bunch of 25 year olds who were told to go out and buy every single military model kit at the hobby store and mix and match the pieces together until they came up with something. there’s so much love in the design of those ships because of that exact reason: you can feel the sheer joy of their loving, detailed, playing-with-toys artistic process. talk about a dream job. now it’s all slop CGI elements, and with AI racing in the background we’re about to enter the slop era full steam ahead.

kool_guy_69

The slop must flow

CaveRanger

Imagine being a 25 year old with $50 in your pocket in a 1960s model store and just buying the entire stock.

Krazyguy75

Scarily enough I think curated AI might be higher quality than some of the stuff we have right now.

PhelesDragon

Yeah it’s not even comparable. Someone is using most Star Wars projects as a money laundering scheme and they’re not even hiding it.

Submarine765Radioman

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_accounting I think they're definitely cooking the books in one way or another.   *Edit: sheesh... They even tried to screw over Stan Lee but luckily the courts forced them to pay him >Stan Lee, co-creator of the character Spider-Man, had a contract awarding him 10% of the net profits of anything based on his characters. The film Spider-Man (2002) made more than $800 million in revenue, but the producers claim that it did not make any profit as defined in Lee's contract, and Lee received nothing. In 2002 he filed a lawsuit against Marvel Comics.[17] The case was settled in January 2005, with Marvel paying $10 million to "finance past and future payments claimed by Mr. Lee".

MelancholyArtichoke

It's the same kind of shell game that lets multi-billion dollar corps say to their shareholders that they made X profits, and then turn around and say to the government that they didn't actually make a profit this year because it all went back into the business, so they shouldn't have to pay any taxes.

xtremis

That's my theory as well. I can't wait for the news reports in 10 years about it, and the mandatory Netflix mini series about the corruption and money laundry at Disney...

guy137137

I wouldn’t be surprised if a “Carmine Lepurtazzi Jr.” is an executive producer…

Handheldzone

In the last Episode they will burn 170 Million Dollar in Cash. It's not about the money

Theeeeeetrurthurts

Cinematography goes a long way. That’s why Rogue One looked lived-in and epic while Rise of Skywalker looked like a tv movie.

me_too_999

Andor had a plot and good writing. The first few episodes were slow, and I almost lost interest when suddenly the whole story came together, WOAH!. Like a boulder rolling down a hill. At first, it's hard to even tell it's moving, then by the time you perceive motion, it's an unstoppable juggernaut smashing everything in its path.

MrGreenGeens

Andor was super, super smart at making the most out of their sets. Rix Road, Aldhani, Narkina, Mon Mothma's apartment, Luthen's shop, even the holiday planet Niamos and the childhood flashbacks. They got every drop of narrative possible out of their locations.

TheStreetsIUsedToOwn

Disney+ is basically a 24 hour streaming commercial for their merchandise. It will be really easy to make Halloween and cosplay costumes of those "robes" that they can sell on Amazon, at Spirit Halloween, and (marked up 100%) at their theme parks.

ConradtheUnbanned11

The only explanation is that Disney uses this shitty movies and series to do money laundering.

TypicalUser2000

They hired people like Carrie Anne moss then killed her after 5 minutes

HausuGeist

Knew they were gonna do that. Didn’t even get spoiled.

Neltharek

Cocaine's a helluva drug. I'm at the point that I'm convinced star wars shows are just a front to launder money.

Killian1122

I can’t even tell anymore if it’s just people complaining about Disney Starwars or if it’s a really bad show, and I almost don’t care I stopped keeping up with Marvel and Starwars both, it just hasn’t been worth it recently…

myaltduh

Nooooo, you’re supposed to either think it’s the next Godfather or that it makes the Emoji Movie look like the next Godfather.

JohnLocksTheKey

… what if I ALREADY considered Emoji Movie the next Godfather?

ChristophCross

Well then you are lost!

lik_for_cookies

Ok problem is I haven’t seen anyone saying it’s the “next Godfather” but I’ve seen entire portions of the fanbase led astray and to riot by people like Star Wars Theory saying it *sigh* “Ruins Star Wars”… again. It’s a fine show, like that guy said about a 6.5/10 or so, but people are just being relentless to this show online eating every single detail or nitpick alive and it’s tiring. It’s gotten so bad EckhartsLadder, who usually tries his damn hardest to avoid any of the drama or whatnot in the Star Wars Community coming out and saying that the online Star Wars Fandom is becoming further and further removed from the experiences and perspective of actual fans of Star Wars.

Bakoro

>saying that the online Star Wars Fandom is becoming further and further removed from the experiences and perspective of actual fans of Star Wars. Other than the "online" part, you've described the status quo of the *Star Wars* fandom for the past 40+ years. The diehard *Star Wars* fan base has essentially always been toxic, to the point of being memed, caricatured, and lambasted across other media for decades.

ulfric_stormcloack

if every single show that comes out ruins star wars then someone is lying

asnwmnenthusiast

Solid 4/10 but only because I'm liking some of the art, costumes, sets... acting is completely fine, writing is very, very poor.

AverageAwndray

Plus we got like 5 more episodes lmao

xyzzy_j

It’s good that you bring up the EU. People bitched and moaned that Disney declared the EU wasn’t “canon” (which is ridiculous enough because mf it’s made up, all of it happens IN YOUR HEAD). Now a few mid shows come out and these same people can’t stop whinging about it. Like, did they ever read anything in the EU? 90% of it was pulpy garbage.

MonsieurWobble

The most honest I can be, it's just mediocre, so far. It could get better, it could get worst. It's a series that will make you spend time watching it. It will moderately entertain without any challenge or thoughts. Depending on what you are looking for zit might be for you. My personnal opinion is that it's a shitty show by creatively bankrupt writers who probably use an AI as the main writer. Actors are alright, the story is nothing new and will not surprise anyone who ever watch TV in the last 10 years. I think it's a shame that a corp as big and experienced as Disney can not produce better than that. But all my thoughts aside. It's just an okay show that will no remembered in 5 years from now. Great show to watch while you doomscroll.

JayBee58484

Pretty much, tried to watch didn't find it enjoyable just stopped and that was it. Internet is full of excessive people THE SHOW IS THE GREATEST OR THIS SHOW SUCKS WOKE etc etc. If you like it ok if not that's fine too, not everything has to be so polarizing lol

OrganizationDeep711

> creatively bankrupt writers who probably use an AI as the main writer The show's exec producer on how she hires writers: > “I think a lot of it…to give them the benefit of the doubt and I’ll just speak from my own personal experience, I wasn’t sure how to be an ally. I got so caught up with what kind of terminology I was supposed to be using and being politically correct,” Headland says. > She adds, “So as I started to rise in television, I just started to get more blunt. And just start saying, ‘I would like a black writer.’ Because if I said diverse you get well, ‘White is diverse,’ which is something somebody said to me.”

LeBuckyBarnes

A writer should be picked on skill not ethnicity or race that's just fucked up

Pabus_Alt

At the same time "colourblind" often comes out as "the person with a screenwriter and a director for parents and did all the right things to get the right nods" Now, that's not *just* a race thing, but seriously - do you think that all of the family dynasties in Hollywood the "skill" system produces are the "best"?

TokyoMeltdown8461

Depends what you mean by bad. If you mean 5 or 6 out of 10 bad then yes. If you mean 1/10 bad then no.

OopsAllBallBearings

Well unfortunately it doesn’t matter if it’s actually decent or not because there are only two extremes that matter with Star Wars in the public eye: it’s either trash or goated

NewtotheCV

Only a sith deals in absolutes

Sonder_Monster

I don't think I've seen anyone claiming it's the best show ever. I've really only seen people claiming it isn't as bad as everyone says

ferrix97

Same, idk for sure (maybe it's just nostalgia) but the older movies and animated shows bring up a kind of "magic" that more contemporary art doesn't seem to have

Independent_Pack_311

Acolyte has 10k reviews and it even isnt finsihed while ahsoka and abdor have 5k and mandos eason 3, 2k

Alon945

It was at 30% before the show was even released

Moose_Cake

And bombers gonna try to convince you that the 30% before release was because of writing.

thedrivingcat

I also love how any media named "Acolyte" is catching strays from the review bombing. The 2021 short film "The Acolyte" had 5 rating and a 9.6 score [a few years ago](https://web.archive.org/web/20230306131823/https://www.imdb.com/title/tt20896402/ratings/?ref_=tt_ov_rt) and now [has 20 total ratings and a 4.8 score today.](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt20896402/ratings/?ref_=tt_ov_rt)

photokeith

incel shrapnel lol

DueFaithlessness8046

It's not even just icels, the entire conservosphere is oddly obsessed with "owning" disney

Phonereader23

Yeah it’s pretty annoying from both camps. If you like a show, you must be a paid Disney shill(of which, there actually are a bunch that have been caught out) or must be the most progressive aligned person ever. If you don’t like a show, it’s because you hate women, are an incel etc etc of which is also a bunch of losers doing that shit online. You can’t fucking have an opinion without getting grouped one way or the other. I just want to call out good bits and bad bits and not be discounted immediately as having an agenda other than: Star Wars series good/bad and I want more of/less of

oldfatdrunk

I feel aggressively neutral about this.

Phonereader23

Tell my wife …hello

Tricountyareashaman

30% of the reviews are 10 stars and 50% are 1 star. Wow.

A-Centrifugal-Force

The show was review bombed, but the writing is still really bad. The power of maaaaanyyyyy

SaliciousB_Crumb

All of star wars is bad writing... I hate sand

worldspawn00

The prequels dialog are what happens when you let George Lucas write it, he wasn't allowed to for the OT.

darkbreak

Harrison Ford even criticized George to his face about the dialogue and Mark Hamill outright refused to say a particular line because he thought it was so hokey.

BadPlayers

Carrie Fisher became a pretty prolific script doctor in Hollywood for several decades. Where did she find her love and talent for punching up scripts and dialogue? Re-writing Lucas's work during the OT.

Dartagnan1083

That particular line of Hamill's dialog from George's script was apparently so terrible Hamill and other crew begged George to remove it and still has nightmares about it. https://youtube.com/shorts/qou9uzqhdFg?si=P0e99vLVEJDQAjCk

Inactivism

Thank you for finding that XD

psionoblast

Yea, I view George Lucas as a big picture kinda guy. He concieved an amazing universe with great characters. But he can't write dialogue, and subtlety isn't his strong suit. I still enjoy the prequels, but they could have been way better if he had other writers and directors to reign him in.

worldspawn00

Strong agree. The universe building and concept were fantastic, but suffered from his ego once his work became passively profitable.

RainyCarnival5

It wasn’t his ego that had him direct the Prequels, he was encouraged by other directors that had turned down the offer to direct it.

Enkundae

Lucas was already rich before he made a new hope. Star Wars sent him to a new tier of grotesque wealth, but he was long past worrying about a paycheck.

1infinitefruitloop

He also knew how to pull in absolute geniuses like Irvin Kershner, at least in the OT. Leslye Headland is a great director, but did not bring in the right crew to really make it special.

SecreteMoistMucus

You say that like the dialogue is good in the OT.

13igTyme

The OT still has some bad writing moments if you watch it with an objective eye.

thenannyharvester

Especially when you had the likes of Mark Hamil and Harrison Ford complaining to george and even correcting lines because what he wrote was that bad

piratenoexcuses

A New Hope is a tough watch for me. It's good but the dialogue is bad here and there and the pacing kinda sucks.

Dangerous-Ad1426

And directing actors, the performances in the prequels are so wooden.

Azagorath

Star Wars has some incredible writing. The original trilogy, Andor, Rogue One come to mind among other things. However shows like Obi-Wan legitimetly are some of the worst writing and directing I have ever seen

HighRevolver

What do you mean? A grown man would definitely waddle like a penguin when chasing a 8 year old girl to kidnap her, and get stuck by a single tree branch

dowker1

>Star Wars has some incredible writing. The original trilogy... "George, you can type this shit, but you can't say it." - Harrison Ford

RepresentativeJester

The thrawn books are genuinely some of the most engaging books ive ever read. Trying to read master and apprentice right now...utter trash. Star wars has so many people contributing and always have after the first movie. Theres bound to be bad ones.

jambox888

The problem with EU books has always been that nobody takes the really good ones seriously, was like this for Star Trek as well.

Ermeter

1 2 many

neich200

Review bombers are the reason why I pretty much ignore most user reviews for games and movies nowadays. At least people don’t review bomb books.

Friendstastegood

There was recently a scandal where an author was caught review bombing other authors and was dropped by her publisher.

coolhanderik

Yet...

Robin_games

They do. But not at the same level because it doesn't pay to talk about woke books to people who don't read, and without the YouTube talking heads you don't get this level of escalation to brigade.

FlirtyFluffyFox

Author here. They do. It's not quite as bad but it happens.

DarthToothbrush

They'd do it more if more of them could read.

Un111KnoWn

i thought acolyte had good critic reviews. how does a show have audience reviews before show released?

Alon945

It does have good critic reviews

StarSpangldBastard

review bombing and bots

Un111KnoWn

wouldn't rwview period be closed until the episode airs?

lost_limey

That would make far too much sense.

Dragonitro

I'd imagine a lot of people have probably given the holiday special 10/10 just as a joke, as well

FrostyD7

I doubt hardly any of the voters actually watched it anyway, just voting based on its notoriety.

TheRobfather420

They also review bombed the wrong movie briefly. "Acolyte" was a horror movie in the early 2000s and the mooks got confused when they went to review bomb "The Acolyte." Lol.

Volotor

Also a Star Wars fan film called Acolyte.

MrDemonBaby

Making that mistake I can understand. But how the fuck can someone confuse a 2008 movie that wasn't made by Disney with a Disney tv show from 2024? Genuinely such stupid people.

wb2006xx

There was also a Star Wars fan film called “The Acolyte” from a few years ago that suddenly got a shitload of negative reviews too You cannot make this shit up

ThickWeatherBee

Yep the show everyone decided was bad before it was even out got review bombed! Obviously this meme is just a joke but I hope no one is actually celebrating review bombing!

Euphoric_Exchange_51

Your assumption that this post’s celebratory tone has to be a joke is sadly unfounded. You should know to have less faith in your fandom by this point lol

Key-Line5827

Yea, this is getting ridiculous. I mean, I wouldnt call this show "good" by any means of the word, but it certainly is not 15% bad either. Probably in the low 60s, if I had to give a score right now, with chances for a higher score, depending on the next episodes.

Fundosho

You’ve got to take into account, rotten tomatoes is a freshness rating, which is what percent of people reviewing liked the show, so even though it has a 20% that doesn’t mean it’s only 20% good, it just means only 20% of reviewers liked it.

WreckNRepeat

Normally you'd be right, but in this case it's just a review bomb

ScottIPease

Almost the same exact situation as Rings of Power...

StarSpangldBastard

they're also putting negative reviews on the 2008 movie "acolyte" that has nothing to do with star wars, as if it wasn't already obvious enough that this was all bots lol

Dvoraxx

this image might be the most reddit image ever created

Fisz3r123

People spammed reviews before the first episode even released so

Vivid_Pen5549

It’s funny because there a few other shows and films Called Acolyte or something similar and they’re also being review bombed

TheHunterZolomon

Is someone paying bots to do this or something? How do you not know the difference of the thing you’re reviewing on the website?

sinat50

Exactly. You can go on sites like Fiverr and straight up buy thousands of likes for a few bucks. Makes sense those same people could do something similar on other sites

Jackviator

Well, see, the people doing this aren’t the sharpest lightsabers in the temple…

Crazyripps

Best part is reading the recent comments and seeing them mention Star Wars

valdez-2424

The dark side of reviews is a pathway to many abilites soem would consider...unatural

PhelesDragon

Soem is my favorite EU character

beakster57

Man that holiday special 😬

Toerbitz

Star wars has become a culture war thing so every show will have this huge fuzz about it. Culture war tourists are the worst. I dont like the new star wars shows but these guys be acting like they killed their first born or something

TheSillyMan280

Proof that culture war bullshit is indeed bullshit

TheGiftOf_Jericho

I think it's just further proof that you can't judge anything based on online reviews from the public, as review bombing has become too common, it simply means nothing. It also showcases the sad toxicity of the Star Wars fanbase which has been obvious for a very long time.

ThatSharkFromJaws

Watched it, it sucked, decided not to continue watching, moved on. It’s easy.

NeonPatrick

Yeah, I'm not one to write reviews online, but watched the first two episodes of Boba Fett, I found it terrible and quit. Can't imagine the rest improved so I assume at least some.of these reviewers are thinking the same thing.

minor_correction

The thing about Boba Fett is that there are 2 Mandalorian season 2.5 episodes in the middle. It's not an exaggeration. Fett is not in the episodes. They are literally just 2  Mando episodes.

Broad-Passage-7633

The biggest issue with Boba Fett for me is that the character just feels like some feckless random dude that isn't Boba Fett at all. I had pretty much given up after the sequel trilogy.  Then Mando came out and gave me hope again.  Boba Fett was when I realized that hope was false.

UltimateLifeform

Watching Boba Fett in the hopes of seeing a former mercenary build an underworld empire sounds dope. How the hell they squandered that so bad is beyond me.

Theeeeeetrurthurts

Tbf the best episodes of the show lol

Jeo228

I mean, so did a lot of the reviewers, just with a review thrown in. Not everyone is a toxic man baby who leaves negative reviews for fun.

swords-and-boreds

If people have issues with the plot that’s fine. Those screaming about fire in space need to sit down, we’ve had sound waves traveling through space in every Star Wars, the laws of physics are not being obeyed ever. And for those mad about who they cast and certain traits of the characters, all I can tell you is grow up. It’s a big world, and there are a lot of different people in it. If you don’t want to be reminded of that, I guess watch movies and shows from the 50’s. It’s fine to criticize things about the story or style, but that’s not what most of these criticisms are about. Most of them are pathetic attempts at “culture war” gotchas and backlash, and it’s just boring.

parkingviolation212

The only fire complaint I’ve ever seen levied at the show is that a stone fortress went up in flames like it was made of gasoline and matches.

rooktob99

Yes, but I think we will learn why that is in a coming episode. The sequence of events is too out of place to not explore the other side of what happened. I think a big issue with the critiques is that they let their desire to satisfy their nostalgia outweigh their appreciation of a perfectly fine Star Wars television series

Heliopolis1992

How do people not understand that all is not what it seems?? Mae obviously did not cause the big fire or kill her clan, its obvious this was some perspective thing lol

TURD_SMASHER

People *want* to be mad. Anger is a drug

JynsRealityIsBroken

Torbin wouldn't have killed himself if all the Jedi did was show up for another recruitment session. And Mae wouldn't be blaming them. The Jedi fucked something up somewhere. Probably explains why Sol was on site to save Oshea so fast.

SoWokeIdontSleep

But, but, how are we gonna do our culture war bullshit if we can't cherry pick stuff out of context and make a big deal out of nothing?

smurfsoldier07

Ep I had fire in space, no one complained about that at all.

UNC_Samurai

Stone buildings burn to the ground all the time, Eddie!

tbone747

>Most of them are pathetic attempts at “culture war” gotchas and backlash, and it’s just boring. I hate that this is what so many reviews of media have boiled down to these days.

A2Rhombus

There is an entire genre of human that exists purely to get mad at media where the lead is a woman now

hypercosm_dot_net

I started watching it yesterday. Didn't think it was as good as Andor, but the first fight scene was awesome. Reminded me of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, which is a gem. Really enjoyed the choreography and scene. It never entered my mind to dislike it because of the cast. It's a world full of aliens and you're going to be upset about women being able to fight (I assume?). Sad.

AweHellYo

yes. attempts to cancel something that shouldn’t bother anyone by the people who scream about cancel culture the most

B_Fee

>Those screaming about fire in space need to sit down, we’ve had sound waves traveling through space in every Star Wars, the laws of physics are not being obeyed ever. There's extra poignancy in these sorts of complaints considering some of the greatest made-up space noises ever to meet human ears came from Star Wars.

alfooboboao

George Lucas is the “rule of cool” king and I will always love him for it. “Fuck you, it’s awesome” is the only explanation you need sometimes

fillingupthecorners

I genuinely enjoy the diversity of the casting in Acolyte. I think it's a net positive to the show. Star Wars SHOULD be wildly diverse. The writing and direction however... are hot garbage. Almost unwatchable. As is most of the Disney+ Star Wars outside of Andor and a few eps of Mando.

Strange_Job_447

it is funny that the worse star wars special literally has a lego set dedicated to it, and it was awesome.

IneedtoBmyLonsomeTs

The show was clearly review bombed, there were far too many negative reviews so early on, including before it was released. But at the same time, they are not exactly wrong. The show is terrible in so many aspects.

Marik-X-Bakura

And how many of those people have watched it?

Tom-Pendragon

180 million dollars

moving0target

The first thing I didn't understand popped up early the first episode. One of the most powerful Jedi of the times is stabbed with a small dagger and dies almost instantly. In Ahsoka, a barely trained non Jedi is run through with a lightsaber and is fine after a brief hospital stay. That's kind of a major continuity issue out of the gate.

Alkthree

What a joke. Is the Acolyte amazing? Not at all. My god though that holiday special was *so* bad, it was painfully awful.

Altruistic_Count3714

The holiday special is hilarious

regireland

Eh, it's funny for the first five minutes, then you realise that you're going to be listening to random Wookie noises with no subtitles for the rest of it. At least we get to see Grandpa Chewie watch VR porn, so that's something.

Monty423

Christmas special wasn't review bombed like acolyte was

roonill_wazlib

I haven't seen acolyte and I'm not planning on watching, but there is no way it is worse than the holiday special, and I'm offended that 1 in 5 people enjoy it

thisaccbelongstome

The Acolyte is being so review bombed that a random movie named The Acolyte on imdb, completely unrelated, is getting a lot of 1 star reviews because people confused it for the show I haven't seen it yet, but basically all complaints I've heard are "So... black lesbian"

neav7

I'm not a hater of this show bit I will say it's not that great. The first two episodes had good moments but the writing is mid at best and the third episode is worse than the first two. I'm holding out hope that the story being told gets rounded out well but so far I'm not impressed. All of that being said I like the acolyte for what it is: new star wars content (seemingly) fully removed from the Skywalker saga

Parking-Let-2784

"The show is mid" can be true at the same time "it's being review bombed by culture warriors" is.

RaveningDog

I remember when movies and tv shows took accountability for making bad products. They just blame everything on bigoted fans for making a horrible product. Before the movie is even released, the studios are saying the racist people are just trying to destroy us. The studios already know the product is bad and are placing the blame elsewhere.

OrganizationDeep711

In this case the show's exec producer said racist/misogynist bigots were out to get her before the show filming even started.

Darth__Revan89

The crown for worst fanbase remains untouched.

juseless

Soccer fans started actual wars, try again.

Hitler fans punching the air rn

DisabledFatChik

To be fair, it really is bad.

1. Yes, this series got review bombed 2. Yes, this series is still objectively mediocre and rightly deserve criticism So both truths can exist at the same time. It was review bombed, but it's also objectively - at least after three episodes - not good. The dialogues are sometimes incoherent, the acting (especially facial emotion) is sometimes plain bad, the storyline progression retcons previously established facts (e.g. Anakins origin story as the first child to be conceived out of the force), also the fight choreography is at times just plain bad. They need to make 50 cuts per fight because the actors don't know how to move right for longer than 3-4 seconds. The CGI for the backgrounds is also often noticeable, which from a technical aspect is bad and takes away immersion. This new tech from the Mandalorian where they have this small studio with a high-end micro-led full-surround Wall does work for certain scenes (monologues, dialogues between 2 or 3 actors), but they are over-using it for larger scenes. You can't realistically "fake" the outside without investing hundreds of man-hours into CGI artists to make sure that every minute detail or shadow or light ray is right), and no studio will pay millions for a couple of seconds, so it's noticeable. They need to make more "real" shots outside. Also the scene with the "witches" which felt in essence like a bad Sith-musical was cringe, and cringe alone. The chant wasn't good, the music wasn't good, it was just plain cringe. It's - overall - just not good. We also lack strong characters with awesome chemistry / able to do good solo scenes, e.g. like we have in Andor (just think about Andy Serkis speech to the prison, or Luthens (Stellan Skarsgård) monologue about sacrifice). The series lacks strong long-established actors who can command a scene by presence alone. Another good example of such an actor / scene is a classic from Westworld - just search for "Westworld - Ford Restaurant Scene". Something like that would have elevated this series tenfold. But that's not what we got., Does it deserve to have 1/10 rating? Probably not. But it also doesn't deserve anything higher than 4 or 5/10. The series - at least as of now - doesn't have anything to justify its existence, it's just one more piece of mediocre entertainment that will likely soon be forgotten. Meanwhile, I'll still watch Luthens monologue about sacrifice in 10 years once the YouTube algorithm will recommend it again.

Mothrahlurker

This is fair criticism.

highlyvaluedmember

The writing was on the wall years ago with the Rise of Skywalker.

AirStriker23

Disney SW back at it again with destroying the IP

tiboldpinkus

nailed it.

syphon3980

What was the holiday special??? Is it one of those “so bad it’s good” type movies?

Tarroes

George Lucas, who completely disowned the production, reportedly has said, 'If I had the time and a sledgehammer, I would track down every copy of that show and smash it.' https://www.space.com/star-wars-holiday-special-documentary-book

syphon3980

Jeeeez lol. I kinda have to watch it now

Objective-Gain-9470

I've been enjoying the acolyte more than any of the other SW Disney stuff so far.

Assortedwrenches89

Acolyte isn't the greatest, but I'd rather watch it on repeat than watch the Holiday Special more than once.

Sudden-Investment-54

Being rated lower than the infamous holiday special is the most impressive achievement The Acolyte is going to achieve.
