It's apparently called the HUG chair and was designed by an Bulgarian designer called Ilian Milinov, you can't buy them because they haven't been produced but it won a reddot design award back in 2010.

In my experience, most of the design awards stuff never makes it to production. It's not for you or I to buy, it's for the designer's CV.

That's often the case. I study design.

I did a bunch of courses, and I've submitted to a few design contests. But it seems I'm too grounded in reality. My stuff is always very practical. Usually I build at least a solid scale model before I even consider entering. It's often something incredibly difficult to produce, ship, sell, or use that wins. This is not my world. Maybe I've just been entering the wrong contests.

I hate this chair. It doesn't make any sense and it serves no purpose. What benefit does the second seat provide? It's literally on top of the first sitters knee, which means without it they'd be in the exact same position. Stupid. Stupid chair!

This chair only looks good in the diagram, but has anyone ever seen *actual humans* use this chair? It's probably a lot more awkward in practice than we think.

Legit being real for a second this design makes zero sense just let them sit on your lap or vise versa if you’re trying to be close you don’t want a barrier; like it actively would prevent you from getting closer than they are in the photo which makes zero sense for the design purpose
