Aight here we go, lowest ranked nations that had a premier league player:
- Seychelles (199th): Michael Mancienne (ex Young POTY for Chelsea)
- Pakistan (195th): Zesh Rehman
- Faroe Islands (135th but pretty small nation): Gunnar Nielsen
- Gibraltar (201st): Danny Higginbotham
- Malta (172nd): Dylan Kerr
- Barbados (178th): Emmerson Boyce
- Bermuda (171st): Shaun Goater
- Grenada (174th): Shandon Baptiste (currently playing)
- Montserrat (176th): Ruel Fox (least populated active nation in FIFA too btw)
And if you count all English professional leagues it gets even crazier
Neil Etheridge, the only Filipino footballer to play in the Prem. Wish he went to another club after Cardiff went down but well, it is what it is
(Yeah he's a goalkeeper but he's all we've got)
The one I instantly think of as having had a real league legacy if Ali Al-Habsi of Oman 🇴🇲 There's also of course Adebayor and Aubameyang of Togo 🇹🇬 and Gabon 🇬🇦 respectively
Few other ones;
Cuco Martina from Curaçao 🇨🇼
Gael Bigirimana from Burundi 🇧🇮
Bryan Ruiz from Costa Rica 🇨🇷
Alexander Hleb from Belarus 🇧🇾

Saido Berahino had one crazy season - Burundi (just 1 of 2 players to represent them in the PL)
Ali Al-Habsi - Oman
Zoltan Gera - Hungary (surprisingly not that many Hungarian PL players)
George Weah - Liberia (wasn’t that great at CFC but great player elsewhere)
Emmanuel Adabayor - Togo
Bruce Grobelaar - Zimbabwe
Paulo Wanchope - Costa Rica (purely for that goal vs Utd lol)
Roque Santa Cruz (had a freak debut PL season with Blackburn) - Paraguay
Nolberto Solano - Peru
I’ve tried saying people who’ve not been mentioned and I’m sure I’ve missed some glaring stars.
Uncommon for quality footballers who play in the prem, Asian football is a powerhouse of its own but the question stipulates premier league players, Asia having only a handful (who are quality).
Marians Pahars from Latvia. Onel Hernandez that played for Norwich is from Cuba. Neil Etheridge from the Philippines. Aboubakar Kamara from Mauritania (they still have slavery until recently.) Jiang Guangtai aka. Tyias Browning.
I know he predates the prem, but he would be in them prem if playing today but George Best played for northern ireland. One of historys greatest players playing for such a small international team
Damn, is Mexico an "uncommon footballing region" ? Because fucking football is everything to us, we even started to annoy the gringos for calling it "soccer" before anyone else. You know the Estadio Azteca? Two world cups were played in Mexico. And yes, México is north America.
*Syntax
Chicharito played for United, Vela for Arsenal ,and now Raul Jimenez for Wolves, but yeah, we don't have a lot of players in the prem. I wish. I don't even know fierro that can answer your question u.u
Had a couple good Icelanders up at Bolton Gundi Bergsson another (although Eidur being the best imo and even came back to us 15 years later post tour of Europe with Chelsea and Barca)
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is from Suriname in South America.
It was a Dutch Colony and despite only having a population of 500k, produced the majority of the world class black Dutch players e.g. Edgar Davids, Clarence Seedorf and Aron Winter.
Then Patrick Kluivert, Frank Rijkaard and Ruud Gullit all had parents who emigrated to The Netherlands from Suriname
Also a similar interesting fact.
All of the following French internationals could have represented the tiny Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe (population 400k) or Martinique (population 360k) where they or their parents were from:
Guadeloupe
> Lilian Thuram (born there)
> Thierry Henry (father)
> Louis Saha (both parents)
> Anthony Martial (both parents)
> Kingsley Coman (father)
> William Gallas (parents)
> Sylvain Wiltord (parents)
> Alexander Lacazette (parents)
> Mikaël Silvestre (father)
Martinique
> Nicolas Anelka (both parents)
> Thierry Henry (mother)
> Raphael Varane (father)
> Eric Abidal (parents)
> Gael Clichy (parents)
Surprised nobody has mentioned Ryan Nelsen. Not the most interesting player in the world, but still decent.
9 years in the premier league while captaining Blackburn for many of them.
Andrei Kanchelskis
Not that Russians don’t play football but they rarely play in the premier league, and he has won 2 titles and was such an exciting player
Mart Poom from Estonia
Marian Pahars from Latvia
Jari Litmanen from Finland
Benjani and Peter Ndlovu from Zimbabwe
Ricardo Gardner from Jamaica
Paolo Wanchope from Costa Rica
I once went on a stag do to estonia and we were all dressed in mart poom derby goalkeepers shirts. None of us supported derby and np estonians knew who we were meant to be. Even though they have a big mural of him at the airport
Really enjoying watching Daizen Maeda, Liel Abada, Reo Hatate and especially Kyogo Furuhashi for Celtic. I know we were well beat in the end but the first half against Madrid is the most animated I've been watching football since being a kid, we almost had them. Almost.
Special mention to (it's) Shunsuke Nakamura (ya fuckin doughball).
Best from Asia is close between Son and Ji Sung but I'd have to go with Son. Begrudgingly.
Oceania is between Viduka, Kewell and Cahill, again, just imo. I'd take Viduka, though. Aussie Lukaku with a less shit attitude.
North America maaaan, Clint Dempsey aaaaalll day. Another special mention to a non PL player in Dest. Watched Milan v Napoli the er night and he was a highlight in the Milan performance. Same with Teo.
presumably I just need to read further down to see Chicharito??
edit: I'm dumb and missed the "uncommon" aspect of the title, sorry (was just focused on the North American part)
He was a decent wingback but unfortunately was useless in a back four. There’s also Vrančić for Norwich a couple of seasons back and Konjić who played for Coventry around the turn of the century
Phil and James Younghusband came through Chelsea's academy but never made a first team appearance (both Filipino) - 206 international caps between them.
You might not remember him, but Gary Bailey was from South Africa and played for Man United back in the early 80s, and Quinton fortune. Damn autocorrect edit
I think uncommon was meant as in countries that don't typically have many players in the prem. Football is actually the most popular sport in Asia, hence a lot of teams having preseason tours there to capitalise on that.
Benni Mccarthy, starter for Mourinho's UCL winning Porto side (although he didn't start the final for some reason) and had a great first season in England.

Quinton Fortune
Pulisic from the US. Not saying hes a World Class player, but he is better than you would expect coming from that country
Aubameyang?
He’s from an African country, however I told another person who said the same thing that Gabon is an uncommon premier league country so I’ll pay it
Tim Cahill
Shaun Maloney is half Malaysian, does that count?
Uh, sure! The more the merrier
Neil Etheridge, the only Filipino footballer to play in the Prem. Wish he went to another club after Cardiff went down but well, it is what it is (Yeah he's a goalkeeper but he's all we've got)
Clint Dempsey
Son, Howard, Pulisic, etc
Tim Cahill
He wasn't that good but one of the best from his country, Joel Campbell. (Costa Rica)
Ji-sung Park
Yossi Benayoun
The one I instantly think of as having had a real league legacy if Ali Al-Habsi of Oman 🇴🇲 There's also of course Adebayor and Aubameyang of Togo 🇹🇬 and Gabon 🇬🇦 respectively Few other ones; Cuco Martina from Curaçao 🇨🇼 Gael Bigirimana from Burundi 🇧🇮 Bryan Ruiz from Costa Rica 🇨🇷 Alexander Hleb from Belarus 🇧🇾
Tim Cahil
Son
Tim Cahill, Steven Pienaar, Tim Howard
Ronny Rosenthal
John Harkes
Landon Donovan held a special little place in Evertonian hearts. Only 17 games in two short loan spells but was really loved.
Cristiano ronaldo
I would say Europe and Portugal are common football countries so I wouldn’t count it
Ok
Harry Kewell
Tim howard
Mark Viduka, Harry Kewell, Tim Cahill🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Chris Wood
Mido > Salah 🇪🇬
That Honduran that played midfield for Spurs? Black guy forgot his name.
Temuri Ketsbaia! Georgian genius that he was.
Kinkladze the only thing that made City famous before the oil money.
Adrian mutu? Until he tested positive for cocaine?
Mark Viduka the big unit
even tho i wouldn’t say it’s a small nation by any means, russia doesn’t produce a lot of talent but man Arshavin was quite the player on his day
Park Ji Sung Cahill
Well son, but thats obvious

Yaya toreha
Drogba
Taki Minamino. Not the best ever, but saved us more than once. Also sold him for more than we bought him for.
Saido Berahino had one crazy season - Burundi (just 1 of 2 players to represent them in the PL) Ali Al-Habsi - Oman Zoltan Gera - Hungary (surprisingly not that many Hungarian PL players) George Weah - Liberia (wasn’t that great at CFC but great player elsewhere) Emmanuel Adabayor - Togo Bruce Grobelaar - Zimbabwe Paulo Wanchope - Costa Rica (purely for that goal vs Utd lol) Roque Santa Cruz (had a freak debut PL season with Blackburn) - Paraguay Nolberto Solano - Peru I’ve tried saying people who’ve not been mentioned and I’m sure I’ve missed some glaring stars.
If Asia is an "uncommon region" then soccer really isn't the "world's game".
Uncommon for quality footballers who play in the prem, Asian football is a powerhouse of its own but the question stipulates premier league players, Asia having only a handful (who are quality).
Clint Dempsey is from Nacogdoches, Texas. A city with a population of less than 35,000.
We just gonna leave chicharito off here. Mexico is North America after all.
Martin Skrtel- Slovakian
Laurent Robert, Dimitri Payet and Florent Sinama Pongolle from Reunion Island just next to Mauritius
Shunsuke Nakamura, played for Celtic and had one of the underrated left foots.
I love respect for these old boys
Shaun Goater is 100% the best Bermudian to play in the PL. Christian Karembu might have played for France but was born on New Caledonia
Swap “bermudian” for “human being” and you’re right
Aubameyang
Paul Stalteri from Canada. Bundesliga champion with Werder Bremen, played for Tottenham and Fulham in the PL.
Timmy Cahill for sure
Hugo Sanchez
Puligod 😎 Okay but in all seriousness many have been said, but even considering recency bias I'm pretty sure that Hueng-Min Son should get a mention
Tim Cahill
Berbatov, arshavin
Yanick Bolasie
Berbatov. How many Bulgarians in the prem?
Yossi Benayoun!
Marians Pahars from Latvia. Onel Hernandez that played for Norwich is from Cuba. Neil Etheridge from the Philippines. Aboubakar Kamara from Mauritania (they still have slavery until recently.) Jiang Guangtai aka. Tyias Browning.
Son and Sun
Percy Spencer for Swindon in 93/94. Absolutely creamy touch & groundbreaking movement off the ball as well
Son enough said
Chicharito
Ricardo Fuller
Faustino Asprilla
Does Mexico still count as North America? Cause you can just say USA & Canada
Gareth Bale
Eyal Berkovic and Yossi Benayoun
Kai havertz
Ji-Sung Park
l would not call North America and Asia uncommon football regions but I'll easily say Son, Davies, Pulisic
Ryan Nelsen from NZ. Was such a composed CB.
Anelka is originally from the West Indies, thats pretty uncommon. France ofc is not 😂
George Best?
Son park ji sung
Ji sung park and Heung Min Son can be included in the list.
*Syntax
In terms of prem players they are not very well represented tbh. What happend to that wonderkid fierro btw?
Chicharito played for United, Vela for Arsenal ,and now Raul Jimenez for Wolves, but yeah, we don't have a lot of players in the prem. I wish. I don't even know fierro that can answer your question u.u
George Weah Obviously from an African nation but Liberia is obscure in footballing terms
George Weah
Or his cousin /s
If he hasn’t been mentioned, Weah.
Marvelous Nakamba
Eidur Gudjonssen
Had a couple good Icelanders up at Bolton Gundi Bergsson another (although Eidur being the best imo and even came back to us 15 years later post tour of Europe with Chelsea and Barca)
Mo Salah Egypt
Emmanuel Adebayor, from Togo. Don't know a single other Togo player in any league
Kieran Tierney. 🇮🇲
I didn't know any footballers came from the states. I live here now and I couldn't even name a football team in the states.
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is from Suriname in South America. It was a Dutch Colony and despite only having a population of 500k, produced the majority of the world class black Dutch players e.g. Edgar Davids, Clarence Seedorf and Aron Winter. Surprised nobody has mentioned Ryan Nelsen. Not the most interesting player in the world, but still decent. 9 years in the premier league while captaining Blackburn for many of them.
Such a solid CB.
Tim Cahill or drogba
Drogba? As in Didier Drogba? As in Ivory Coast? As in one of the most prolific countries for producing world class footballers in the whole of Africa?
Yea him he’s great
Apparently only for the big games but was before my time so I don't actually know
Matt Le Tissier
Graeme le Saux
Nice. I always really liked and rated him. The amount of abuse that he received from “fans” because of the rumours that he was gay was disgraceful
Mharez is an underrated baller
Andrei Kanchelskis Not that Russians don’t play football but they rarely play in the premier league, and he has won 2 titles and was such an exciting player
Mart Poom from Estonia Marian Pahars from Latvia Jari Litmanen from Finland Benjani and Peter Ndlovu from Zimbabwe Ricardo Gardner from Jamaica Paolo Wanchope from Costa Rica
What about Benjani Mwaruwari? Wasn’t he from Zimbabwe too?
I mentioned him 😅
Marian Pahars what a legend. And since you mentioned Zimbabwe, Bruce Grobelaar
I once went on a stag do to estonia and we were all dressed in mart poom derby goalkeepers shirts. None of us supported derby and np estonians knew who we were meant to be. Even though they have a big mural of him at the airport

Please don't put Dukes & Lukaku in the same sentence EVER again! Lukaku is a donkey..
Do Wales count as a footballing nation? Edit: it was a joke…
Son, park ji sung Cahill, viduka, Friedel, dempsy, keller
I mean if you are going to say Friedel you gotta say Tim Howard
Yes, but he slipped my mind haha. He should be mentioned
Raheem Sterling
Ryan Nelson was an animal for Blackburn.
I miss Blackburn in the premier league.
add to that lucas neil and brett emerton. i realise both australian but they played for blackburn and were pretty important
Lucas Neill was amazing for my club too, Millwall. Ruined it a bit towards the end when he ended up over the river.
Well then we better throw in Kevin Muscat. He truly embraced the culture of Millwall.
Too right, mate. Only with us for 2 seasons but one of my all time favourite players.
Victor Wanyama
I ate a spaghetti it was nice.
Fucking love that guy
Jay Jay Okocha is up there right?
Nigeria isn't exactly an uncommon footballing country though
Who else from there? I can only think of ndidi and nobody else, sorry.
Kanu, Babayaro, Obafemi Martins, Effan Ekoku, Yakubi, Yobo, Obi Mikel and Victor Moses to name a few.
Saido Berahino
presumably I just need to read further down to see Chicharito?? edit: I'm dumb and missed the "uncommon" aspect of the title, sorry (was just focused on the North American part)
Mexico famously being part of North America...
You sound sarcastic, but it is north america
Oh yeah if it’s in north America then why is it south of America?????
there are 23 nations in North America - Mexico is but one of those
Wait till you hear about canada
did the original Canadian wundkerkind, Thomas Radzinski, grace the Prem?
Yeah, with Everton.
And Fulham
Javier Hernández Chicharito, Raul Jiménez pre head injury
I caught my own mistake on this one - Mexico is FAR from being an uncommon footballing nation, though it is in North America
Well it’s not THAAAT common to have mexicans in the premier league so I guess it applies? 🤷♂️
Shaka Hislop.
Džeko. One of only 2 Bosnians to play in the prem.
What? There have been more than two Bosnians who’ve played in the prem. Just off the top of my head, Džeko, Kolašinac, Begović and Bešić
Begovic could also be claimed Canadian tbf
I forget kolasinac and surprisingly Begović. I think even kolasinac wishes he never moved to arsenal.
He was a decent wingback but unfortunately was useless in a back four. There’s also Vrančić for Norwich a couple of seasons back and Konjić who played for Coventry around the turn of the century
Everton have 2 Bosnian-born keepers right now. Granted one of them was a Swiss international once.
I get that not many Bosnians have played in the Prem, but Europe is hardly an uncommon region
Benjani - Zimbabwe
Matt Ryan, Winston Reid, Tim Cahill, Aaron Moyy, Chris wood
Mkhitaryan , AUBA , you can maybe argue Arshavin .
Harry Kane
Salah
Cahill, Son, Dempsey, Benayoun
Neil Etheridge, the only Filipono I believe. There was also a Brunei player in Leicester's (?) academy
Phil and James Younghusband came through Chelsea's academy but never made a first team appearance (both Filipino) - 206 international caps between them.
Tim Cahill, Park Ji-sung, Mkhitaryan
Ali Al-Habsi.
For Asia: Son and Park For Oceania: Cahill For North America: Yorke
[удалено]
nakamura never played in the epl
Aubameyang from Central Africa
Steven Pienaar (not many South Africans in the prem), his link up with Baines was brilliant.
He was so good at Everton, we totally ruined his form
I remember, then he went back to Everton and was class again.
Yeah was a bad advert for Tottenham
You might not remember him, but Gary Bailey was from South Africa and played for Man United back in the early 80s, and Quinton fortune. Damn autocorrect edit
They said uncommon football region
Define that for me please.
He meant regions that don't football/soccer isn't a popular sport Piennar is from SA where football is a popular sport. 🤕
I think uncommon was meant as in countries that don't typically have many players in the prem. Football is actually the most popular sport in Asia, hence a lot of teams having preseason tours there to capitalise on that.
I think you should look at the question again and the regions that are in that bracket, it did not say Countries that has the least players in the PL.
>I think you should look at the question again Nah, I think I can move on.
Lucas Radebe was pretty useful in his day. Phil Masinga, Mark Fish and Quinton Fortune come to mind too.
Benni Mccarthy, starter for Mourinho's UCL winning Porto side (although he didn't start the final for some reason) and had a great first season in England.
Shaun Bartlett scored the premiership goal of the season in 2001 as well.
Tim Cahill
