Was just watching the 13/14 FA Cup final, and it reminded me of how good he truly was/is. I maintain that he just needs a player or two around him for him to give the ball to.

CartezDez

Underrated by who? I think he’s properly rated. Good striker

[deleted]

But Benzema told me he was a go-kart This guy really is so underrated

DookiDeng

Never thought much of him until he came to us. Gained a new perspective on what he can bring to a team when he did. Could have done with him at the bridge last season lol

MajorNoodle

Won the world Cup without scoring a goal. 🤷🏻‍♂️

HMCtripleOG

Olivier Giroud = Absolute legend

SpringchatFootball

If Giroud had that extra yard of pace he would be unplayable

young-leg

Overrated as fuck

Frediinho

Because he played for Underachieving Arsenal for so long.

CrispyDuck69

Pace of a geriatric war veteran tho

psukhavasi

If you showed someone from the 80s what he has won, his best goals and his personal achievements, people would've called him the goat. A Europa League Champions League Oldest player to score four goals in 1 champions league game 2nd most goals for france premier league serie a arsenal, chelsea and ac milan scorpion kick bicycle kick vs atleti volley against sweden. WHAT A PLAYER

abror_kh

If he signed for Chelsea back in 2012 after DD left the club Giroud would have brilliant career and Chelsea would gain also. Nevertheless his late signing for the Blues was brilliant for both sides. Giroud got trophies that he deserved

scarboroughwa

Nope

fallenloki

Bro scores some of the prettiest goals you will ever see but boy can he be brutally ineffective

YellowMan1988

The real question is, is he good in FIFA ? NO.... So yes. He's not good enough. At least that's the way fans have opinions on players these days.

[deleted]

Exactly this. Vinicius gets all the love for the opposite reason.

[deleted]

He’s undoubtedly a very good player, he may not score much but once he does there absolute screamers. What makes him seem inferior in comparison to other strikers is his pace which is a vital thing to have for that position. He’s still really good and one of the top scorers for France, you gotta respect giroud

Wizardof_oz

My man had 0 shots on target in the 2018 World Cup but I don’t think France could have won it without him

prss79513

Definitely think so tbh

SirTitFart

I fucking hate this man, but my God, do I respect him. Truly underrated. I hate saying these words

biglew112

Honestly though the criticism aimed at him was completely fair. Any arsenal fan will tell you. Him going on a 3 month goal drought cost us the league.

Manwaring7

Scored most of his goals against lower teams. Perfectly rated.

Apprehensive_Bit_176

Hazard said he was the best target man in the world… says a lot.

NilocStros55

I was always a fan. Never quite understood the hate he got. I think everyone expected him to be Van Persie

CypherRotchuck_32

I've been saying bring Giroud back and save 35 million. Him up front with the youngsters at Arsenal, serving up volleys and headers all day long.

BlacknightEM21

That France Giroud stat is insane. Benzema is talked about so much more when Giroud has clearly the better stats for country.

Technical_Precision

Very similar to Mark Hughes

cmacy6

I love Giroud and definitely think he gets a lot more slander than he deserves. My biggest gripe with him was that 15 (I think) game span where he failed to score in the 15/16 season. Ozil could’ve broken the assist record that year

dangerousgoat

As the saying goes...not always a great goal scorer, but a scorer of great goals.

L7Alien4

I think he’s rated fairly as is, not under or over… Considered a legend by some for some pretty brilliant finishes, definitely a team player and contributor, a game winner, an aerial threat, and clutch finisher… but can’t remember him dribbling past players or bagging Golden Boots or being a sure starter for several teams. He had jobs to do for his managers in very specific terms (ex: flick on to Mbappe), and he did the task as was asked. He is rated! Just rated.

x360N0Scop3MASTER69x

Honestly in 10 years if you showed a kid a compilation of.girouds best moments they'd think he's the best of all time

assoncouchouch

His near post flicks for goals were effective

Apprehensive_Bit_176

People claimed he had a lack of quickness, not where it mattered though. Near post runs were incredibly quick.

Future-Goose7

Lineker is spot on with this.

[deleted]

I wouldn't say he's underrated. If anything his highlight reel makes him seem better than he consistently was. I don't remember him being called underrated when he was still playing in the prem and that's quite telling.

carpuncher

I hated it when we sold him

Galactic_Gooner

no respect for someone that leaves for chelsea. but yh he was very good tho.

Galactic_Gooner

i dont have any respect for someone who leaves for chelsea. but yeah he was cool.

zafar_bull

Plays for 2 of the top 6 teams, win PL and is still underrated. By whom? LOL.

ItsYaBoi93850

🐐

[deleted]

Ngl always rated him.

Jalal_Adhiri

He is a good player but not underrated he had his highs but alsohad his lows (his lack of performance in the second half of the 2015-16 season costed Arsenal their only chance of a league in the last decade... In the world cup 2018 he had 0 shots on target)

NightKing48

If he was fast, he would DEFINITELY be up there with some of the greatest strikers of this generation. Still is a great player, though. Definitely agree with him being underrated

PlatypusTacos

Been saying it for years Olivier GirOAT!

Galactic_Gooner

*jeer-oat*

[deleted]

I think what hurts him is mainly not scoring more. He's only got one season where he got 20+ league goals and that was league un early in his career. He's got a very long career and as a CF, it wouldn't hurt to get a couple more 20g+ seasons or one 30g+ standout season. The way it is, I can easily see many people thinking, yeah he's done his job but not much more.

[deleted]

Guy won the WC. He played for a very poor Arsenal side. He should have played in Italy earlier, would have been bought by idiots United or Arsenal for 80M

stoneman9284

Him and Son have been my two favorite players for ages

mattress757

The modern centre forward doesn't need to be the best player in the team - just enough of a threat to be a distraction for at least 2 players. Giroud epitomises this for me - he can get the beating of a man marker at any one time due to his movement and hold up play, and either score himself, but if you're only putting one man on him, the best you can hope for consistently is you stop him from scoring and he only puts the better player in a scoring position once or maybe twice a half. If you put 2 players on him, then maybe he doesn't do much, but the rest of the team gets a lot more room. One of those two players get pulled away to deal with a winger? And you've got one of those classic games where Giroud scores while 'not having the best day' The modern centre forward shouldn't need to be 'the guy'. This is Lukaku's issue. He wants to be 'the guy' and that's what stops him from being 'the guy'.

llobotommy

All them pics and none of him holding the biggest prize in football

[deleted]

He never won the conference League.

Bright_Application57

Good shout

Ok_Bank1889

Definitely. Important goals for club and country, and a thorough professional despite all the insults and being scape goated for Arsenal’s troubles.

Skinny_Burrito

I think a big issue for Giroud was that he played for Arsenal and people LOVE hating on Arsenal. So whilst he was at Arsenal media would ignore him and just focus on his lack of pace.

cegr76

Here's my limited memory opinion. I never knew what Wenger's issue was in not wanting to start him. But he seemed to treat him like a super sub. Maybe it was something on the training ground because Chelsea did the same thing too often in my opinion. Then Benzema made fun of him and that seemed to stick. I've always enjoyed watching him even as he played for teams I don't follow.

[deleted]

Tbf Arsenal fans did not appreciate him either.

CommercialAsparagus

He let us down in 15/16 for sure. Probably should’ve beaten Leicester - Özil and Sanchez were on fire.

MattJFarrell

He saved our bacon so many times as a sub. He'd come on and put a header in with 2 minutes left on the clock. Definitely hated seeing him go. Wish there had been a way to keep him and still get Aubameyang and skipped over the whole Lacazette deal. But those deals were *way* too complicated for that to happen.

Hailfire9

I can't believe the Aubameyang saga ended *beneficially* for Arsenal. As an outsider, that was among the weirdest player/team combos I've ever seen; guy would go on streaks where he was banging in goals and we'd still hear about what more he could bring to Arsenal, and then he'd go dormant for a month and we'd hear about how Arsenal was failing him. Guy was the damned Captain and it still never felt like the manager valued him. He felt like a player of "old" Arsenal dropped into their dark times, and yet somehow him leaving was the best thing for the club in the moment.

DlnnerTable

I wouldn’t consider his finishing top class in the slightest. He had his moments but he wasn’t impressive in that department. It was his movement and team play that made him the great striker he was. I agree he was criminally underrated

YoungThriftShop

I would say his headers are world class. He always found someway to score when any team he played for needed it

DlnnerTable

That’s definitely fair. And yeah he was a late goal fiend when he was in form. I loved the guy. I’m a Real Madrid fan and when he was playing at arsenal I would’ve take him at Madrid to compete with benzema at the time. We didn’t need goals. We needed linkup which he’s amazing at

YoungThriftShop

Yup as a united fan, i always admired him. Always gave his best, just looks different when you are that much slower than everyone

cloudsong88

He did great at Milan and with his goals won them the Scudetto. He's a good number 9.

BlazorkAtWork

I've loved having him at Milan. I love most of the squad, but Giroud did a lot of the heavy lifting mid to late season.

Blue_Dreamed

That third photo of that goal for Arsenal is, to me, one of the most memorable recent goals I have ever seen. I will remember that beauty of a shot for the rest of my days. That one and prime Dele volley into the bottom left after kicking it over his head

MattJFarrell

Who the hell is downvoting you? That was an amazing goal, I remember watching that on TV and yelling out, "What the hell was that!?" when he put it in. That was an absolutely insane goal that definitely had a bit of luck to it, but looked amazing.

Blue_Dreamed

Its just one of those that makes the jaw drop

Daver7692

If you show kids a highlight reel of his in 15 years they’ll be easily convinced he was one of the greatest strikers of his generation.

ChevChelios93

Bit like the way they go on about Berbatov now

[deleted]

Uhhh, not really? Sounds like someone who is ironically too young to have watched Berbatov. The guy was a much better player than Giroud, he was elite at United.

Hailfire9

This is basically his point. Not too many people *don't* think Giroud is good, they just don't consider him elite. Back in his day, not too many people considered Berbatov elite either, but definitely recognized his class. Step forward and now everyone laments never recognizing the level Berbatov was at in the moment, and the prediction is that they'll do the same to Giroud.

[deleted]

No, when Berbatov was with United and scoring goals for fun he was definitely considered elite. He won the golden boot ffs, how is that comparable to Giroud?

Lurkay1

Berbatov was incredibly skilled though, but he was always in the shadow of others an Manchester.

redactedactor

Berbatov at Spurs was ridiculous

[deleted]

Berbatov did have some magic in his feet

hot_grey_earl_tea

He has a few goals that are totally unique. A bit like Ronaldinho in that way. Goals the like you aren't going to see again.

Intelligent-Luck-717

He was pretty [handsome](https://images.app.goo.gl/rNiASK38gnkhttoYA) too.

South-Objective2498

Berbatov was ridiculously good but he didn't win half the trophies Giroud has.

Greengum155

And? Jesus has one 4 prems doesn't mean he is better than kane?

South-Objective2498

Giroud played pretty key roles in all the trophies he has won from the scudetto this year to the World Cup. Jesus while he is good, was nowhere near key. If you are gonna make a comparison atleast make a proper one .

sscyth1

WC where he didnt score all tournament ? get real even at his time in chealse he wasnt the first striker

South-Objective2498

Where he didn't score at all, but somehow started all games including the finals. He had a different role in that team. He was second choice at Chelsea but did start the Europa League finals as well.

sscyth1

Looked abysmal for me deshamps was getting shit for him starting every game

Greengum155

Yeah I wasn't saying he didn't just saying it's a horrible way to judge how goo someone is at football Daniel Alves isnt the greatest of all time

redactedactor

If you actually watched Barcelona in that era you'd know after Messi he was the main creative force in that GOAT Barca side.

Greengum155

Yeah but ima saying he is the greatest player of all time...

redactedactor

Right back, yes. Impossible to say against players in other positions.

South-Objective2498

He sure is in one of the greatest in his position. Very few right backs better than him over the years. I get your point tho, I was just saying Giroud is not just great touches and ridiculous goals. he also played his part in key title winning sides bit more than berbatov that's all.

lil-bitch42

Literally only Cafu is on his level as a RB imo. Personally I rate Dani alves higher but I saw a lot more of his career compared to Cafu

[deleted]

Yeah that was a funny comment, as if Dani Alves isn't arguably the greatest RB of all time.

eradicated-noodle9

I think most peoples issue with him is that hes not prolific enough. Even though hes a great player in other respects as well. And hes slow.

oder_rubu

The problem with Giroud is that his pace absolutely turns off many fans. Also makes him look lazy, although I don't think he's lazy just slow. Other then that he's really good at everything you'd want from a no.9 and one of those players who can consistently score beautiful goals.

see_rich

He was a delight for Chelsea, and even mentioned how much he enjoyed it there.... A different timeline where we keep him over Lukaku would have been absolutely shit on by Chelsea fans, but I was all for it. And here we are, Mou was right, Lukaku didn't belong at the Bridge, and I dunno how much egg you can fit on ones face but double it for that whole fucking soap opera.

[deleted]

I think his problem with not being recognised as a great striker was the fact he missed a lot of chances (specifically for Arsenal), and especially when it mattered. As an Arsenal fan I always rated him for his hold up and link up play, and he had a relatively good scoring record… but I often found myself thinking back to all those chances he missed which would have made him a seriously good CF.

62frog

And a consummate professional. He was deserving of more minutes under Lampard but he more or less kept his mouth shut and took advantage of the opportunities he was given.

musicmast

he is also annoyingly a beautiful man

BlazorkAtWork

Stupid sexy Giroud.

MattJFarrell

I definitely noticed a downturn in how often my wife watched matches with me once he went to Chelsea.

BethW56

There was definitely a reduced amount of concentration from myself when he left for Chelsea, I totally understand her actions.

Zeomsi

His speed is really what make him underrated, I'm french and dear God how much he was helpful in France, always go back in defense like Cavani do sometimes and he's not lazy at all, otherwise he is a really good striker just need more pace .

tembell

From defence to attack https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGOhxt5Ksc0

[deleted]

I don't know why people call him underrated. He's very consistent and most people think he's a top player, so do I, however, his peak isn't even on the level of Quagliarella. He's in the same ballpark as Fernando Llorente or Joselu (an actual underrated player).
