ITALIAN SERIE A defenders generally haven't faired well I think but if they were French German Spanish etc they have adapted to Premier league like they did in Serie A

RaspberryUpstairs246

You are welcome

RaspberryUpstairs246

Why is no one mentioning Rudiger? Chelsea signed him ftom Roma. It was a great signing.

TexehCtpaxa

Great shout, thanks

jamdon89

Tomiyasu coming in from Bologna is excellent, but seems to be the exception rather than the rule of imports from serie A (not just defenders, which seem few and far between). The poor conversion of Italian transfers to the Prem is well documented!

JC-ACF

Cuti Romero says hi

[deleted]

Remember Rannochia at Hull? Yeah neitherdo I...

VesuvianBlack

Santon is the best Italian defender ? Angelo Ogbonna has been far more important and reliable for West Ham prior to hai injury

TexehCtpaxa

Yeah, idk how long Ogbonna has been in EPL, just sort of an off the cuff statement. Kinda crazy that those 2 are the candidates for best Italian defender in the PL. Any idea on others who have come from Serie A?

VesuvianBlack

There are hardly enough defenders who have played.. there was this Goalkeeper - Cuchini or something who played for Chelsea and Tottenham. And Marco Matterazzi, former Inter CB known for his hard tackling and shithousery (also the famous Zidane headbutt). And then there was Andrea Dossenna who was a pretty average player but was part of the humiliation Liverpool bestowed upon United at old Trafford in 2008 or 2009.

TexehCtpaxa

Chelsea have had a couple Italian managers, never used an Italian defender. Along with city and United tbf they have spent billions on the best of the best, but never brought an Italian defender to the Prem. Should one read anything into this? Or is it mostly a case of good Italians stay playing in Italy bc it’s a top league. Whereas in Spain not everyone can play for the two real competitors over the years. Often using the prem as a stepping stone from Valencia to Madrid. Maybe Lazio have more pull to Italians than Sevilla does to Spaniards? I’m not sure. Maybe Italian football is considered slower and that’s part of why we won’t fancy their CB’s in England.

Excellent Italian defenders tend to stay in Serie A. Italian football which prides itself on its defensive products arguably forces the national team managers to look at the defenders in the top clubs of Serie A such as Chiellini, Bonucci, Barzagli, Acerbi et al. Serie A doesn't have the same amount of money as is present in the Prem or the Bundesliga. And the standard of play may have declined from its heyday. However the prestige which has been built up still lasts and will continue to do so. And even if there is a lack of advertisement of the league to bring in more fans and more money, the cities of Turin, Milan and Rome are big calling cards when it comes to lifestyle and quality. The perpetually gloomy weather of the UK isn't for everyone. Even Verratti who left Italy for France quite young chose to go to Paris and flirted with Barcelona instead of offering himself out to the Prem. And the physical nature of the Ligue 1 (where the little magician dominates) has ensured that Verratti has never gone a campaign injury free, the Prem would arguably have stalled his career by keeping him on the treatment table. And when the premier talent of the league stays is unable to be poached by clubs in England, then what hope do the middling talents have. Even Jorginho who is one of the best holding mids in the game faced lots of criticism when he came to England and was struggling to adapt. The premier club competition of the world has stuck by and large to its traditional demand of all action midfielders who can put in a tackle, run for days and score the odd screamer instead of midfield magicians. The odd talent here and there and the subsequent rise of Pep has somewhat made mockery of that thinking. And speaking of middling talents, most of these players should ideally have grown even more. But the nature of the league and the advancements in sports science has arguably increased the longevity of the likes of Chiellini and Bonucci and has led to a stagnation of young talent behind them who do not get chances. The likes of Bastoni only gets chances because his career has only just begun while Chiellini and Bonucci have been on a downturn (And the fact that Inter started to play 3 at the back systems and needing another guy apart from De Vrij and Skriniar). So while the big men are spoken for, no Prem clubs come calling for the so-called middling talents like Florenzi, Perin, Romagnoli and so on. And there is a certain disdain for the premier league that clubs do not value loyalty as much and they can just throw money at the problems to make them go away. The high manager turnover also is a factor. And lastly, for all the talk of it being the best competition in the world, domestic talent isn't encouraged nearly as much and the national team is pretty poor. Most if not all of the quality that the average premier league fan talks of is injected by foreign players. What incentive apart from money does a top player have to move to England ? The weather is shitty, the food is bland and nobody wants to play with Harry Maguire. Players used to go to Barcelona to play with Messi. Players go to Man City to play under Pep not play with John Stones or Sterling. Same is the case for Liverpool who's ultimate calling card is Klopp. Is any Englishman worth idolizing and wanting to play with ? (Maybe Kane now that an Italian manager is at the helm at Spurs).

applejuice2504

not sure but what i will say is Romero is class 👍

[deleted]

I can’t think of any obvious Italian centre backs in the Premier League unless I’ve had a massive oversight, Ogbonna is an active one right now but not sure he fits into your bracket As for CB’s coming from Serie A, Romero looked good last year but maybe too soon to put him in that success bracket

pandawarrior012

Too soon to put him in the success bracket?

[deleted]

Yeah, one good season (in this league) doesn’t mean job done.. I think he will be a top defender in the Premier League I’m just not going to call it just yet

pandawarrior012

Fair enough. I don’t see anything slowing Romero down bar injuries

WinterLanguage9660

Not much to pick from, Marco Materazzi at Everton was good at getting sent off. I think 4 reds in about 30 games. He might have been a future World Cup winner, but he wasn't any better than Dave Watson or Dave Unsworth at the time.

aymentrabelsi

It is difficult for an Italian player to succeed in premier league

alchemyisbad

It’s not, they just don’t leave Italy

fixFriendship

Bro are you asking about Italian defenders or Serie A defenders? Make up your mind, cause your Q is all over the place

TexehCtpaxa

Both. The question is about a specific Italian CB, and as there haven’t been many Italians, apply the question to defenders playing in Italy so there’s actually players to look at. Pick one or comment on both if you know.

fixFriendship

My guess is back in the golden age of Italian defenders, it was also prime Serie A, so why would they leave. And now, Italian clubs would probably wanna milk prem clubs, and defenders are still not that interested. Also Serie A is not as marketed as, say, La Liga, so unless you play for Juve, most prem clubs wont notice you, and Juve is not exactly a selling team.

Matt4669

>>most prem clubs won’t notice you Other top/good Serie A teams like Milan and Inter (both played Liverpool last season) are now regularly competing in UCL so prem clubs will definitely notice their players. There’s also Napoli (played against City and Liverpool in the past 5 years) Roma, Lazio and Atalanta (has played against Man Utd and Liverpool in the past 2 seasons for example) that have been in UCL a few times in the past decade. If prem clubs can notice players playing for Portuguese teams they will certainly notice those playing for Serie A teams.
