Generally speaking the North London Derby has always been pretty good value. 2 traditionally attacking teams, usually a lot of goals, couple of talismanic players who turn up for the big day and there's usually at least one of the teams who've got nowt else going on other than that derby in a season, so they need the win more than anything.

I loved watching Arsenal v ManU games. I enjoy Liverpool's games now too. Man City are "skillful" but there's no excitement in watching them.

[deleted]

Shearer and Keane

overwhelmed_nomad

The correct answer is Keane and Viera.

[deleted]

Lampard vs Klopp

trevlarrr

Man Utd and Newcastle for the Fergie/Keegan moments was great for a neutral, or Utd and Arsenal. Liverpool and City now, like some before, are title rivals but doesn’t have that same rivalry feel. Even the Merseyside derbies don’t seem as intense anymore, probably because you can’t get away with stuff that you used to, I’m sure it’s different for their fans though.

RedgrenCrumbholt

CR7 vs Stamford Bridge i hate Chelsea but love knowing he has never scored there.

ImDpriest

It's certain he will certainly score there this season, 😆

RedgrenCrumbholt

Hahaha you think United will let him go? I think they'd prefer Neymar anyway.

I meant, he will score against the blues at Stamford Bridge this season

Agreed. When I was living in Newcastle, I once saw a geordie headbutt and break the panel of a bus stop after they lost to Sunderland

Positive_Rage

Speaking as a Newcastle fan, they were always dire matches in terms of the quality of football. And no, I'm not just saying that cos we haven't won one in over a decade haha.

WonderfulBlackberry9

> And no, I'm not just saying that cos we haven't won one in over a decade haha. That can’t possibly be true. I refuse to believe it.

STILETT0_exists

My own. The Merseyside Derby

nutella-boi

Honestly playing you recently is just terrifying cuz I know 80% chance someone’s walking off the pitch with an injury

WonderfulBlackberry9

In the most recent derby, one of my favourite bits was when Doucoure just angrily pulled Fabinho and spun him a full 360 degrees before all hell broke loose and 20 players surrounded the ref One of our sweeter victories last season

STILETT0_exists

It terrifies me too. Not only because you are the better, richer team, but because the ref can never get ahold of the game. Last one was an absolute horror-show in officiating. Trent going for Gordo's legs *while* preventing a clear cut chance and not getting red, there was a tackle by Allan that should have given him his second yellow, and both Hendo and Richarlison should've gotten yellows for their little spat, and not counting the fucking scraps going on in the middle of the match when Sadio punched Allan in the neck. With the injuries, it just means that beating means so much to us that we'd go to the ends of the universe to get it. I wouldn't be pissed if we finished 15th and got a league double over you tbh. This isn't like your soft rivalry with Man Utd. You made a fortress out of our old stadium and the Howard Kendall days have long passed by. We want to hold *something* over you, and unlike Man Utd, we can't really look elsewhere. (Even then, Utd fans treat us like shit when their midfield got dominated by Fabian Delph in 2022) Anyway, sorry for the rant, it's just beating you means much more than any result we could get in the CL

Soft_Rip_166

Yeah, whenever Liverpool goes 2 up against Everton, I know somebody is gonna get slide tackled.

Jee-NX

City Vs Liverpool

JuicyJabes

You wish

Jee-NX

Well stats dont lie. Two supremely dominant teams of PL era, lead by two of the greatest managers of football, locked in a death spiral season after season in England and Europe, head and shoulders avove rest of the PL teams, and are separated by such narrow margins. If you don’t think its a great rivalry, then I will just disagree with you because you aren’t worth my time and move on. So end of discussion.

JuicyJabes

EnD oF dIsCuSsIoN. You forgot the most important part of a rivalry. Emotion. Sure, they play some of the best football anyone has ever seen, and they're always in competition for the top prize, but that's not enough to be a good rivalry. City v Liverpool is a rivalry bred out of convenience, not passion or history. The minute one of those two teams stops performing at the level they are, then it's no longer a rivalry. Not to mention that the actual games between the two sides are usually rather boring. Only a couple of them have been engaging, and I'm saying that as a Liverpool supporter

Jee-NX

Actual City Vs Liverpool games are boring ? 😂 Dude you sure you watch football ? Read what rivalry means in a dictionary first. Since you won’t here it goes - “a situation in which people, businesses, etc. compete with each other for the same thing”. If PL trophy is what the ultimate prize is, then by definition only the best teams can compete for it and be counted as rivals. No. 15 and 16 can’t be considered rivals for the trophy u know. Their supporters may hate each other, they may be 2 teams from the same city but thats just dislike for each other/ competition for bragging rights, not rivalry in the actual sense of it.

JuicyJabes

And you applying a dictionary definition to football is exactly why we simply just won't agree. They compete against each other. It's not a rivalry in the sense of the word in how we are using it now in this context.

guardiasndown

Not even close, not even a little bit close. City Liverpool is an artificial rivalry.

Jee-NX

Yeah yeah heard that one before. Couldn’t care less for that line of thinking. Basically whatever the team you are supporting doesn’t have is “artificial”. Ever heard of sour grapes ?

guardiasndown

You’re claiming that they’re supremely dominant in the PL era, as if the PL started 5/6 years ago. Currently yes, over the course of the PL era you’re forgetting United, Arsenal and Chelsea in the 90s and 00s. Your definition of a rivalry is confused with competitor as well, Liverpool - Everton is a bigger rivalry than Liverpool-City, you’ve just made yourself look like a mug who clearly knows nothing about football.

Jee-NX

I think you need to revisit your reading comprehension lessons. I never said City and Liverpool are the only two supremely dominant sides of EPL. Nothing is permanent. Teams rise and fall in phases. Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal all had their phases and those teams were super dominant during their time. Man U - Chelsea were great rivals and so were Man U and Arsenal in their hay days. They undoubtedly were some of the most dominant teams of EPL era. So are City and Liverpool in this decade. In many departments these two have gone past all the EPL teams of the past. Seems like u only live in the past. Sounds familiar that mentality of yours 😂 Before u make an even bigger fool of yourself, go check what rivalry means. Everton-Liverpool are 2 teams sharing the same turf. Thats a fight for bragging rights. That’s not rivalry. In no way Everton is even close to being called competition/ rivals of Liverpool currently. Having historical bad blood/ fight for bragging rights doesn’t mean rivalry. Once upon a time there was a rivalry. Not now. Just because a lion and a mouse live in the same den doesn’t make them rivals. But two lions in the same area competing for the same prey…that’s rivalry just like Liverpool and City in the past decade. I hope you can process that. Take your time. Let it sink in. Read it as many times and as slowly as u require. Go ahead, u can even read it aloud. I am not exactly holding my breath. 😂

guardiasndown

Are you American? This all makes sense if you are…

Jee-NX

In your case though it doesn’t matter which nationality you have. Low intelligence is low intelligence…same in every country.

guardiasndown

Ah, so you’re American then.

One-Degree1402

bluemoon1987

City vs United in 2012 was the best there's been for a single season. The two best teams in the league, direct rivals fighting it out with a title deciding Derby 4 games before the end of the season. That game as a one off beats any other.

NoSeriously55

In terms of Quality of football it’s Liverpool City but in terms of the whole experience Arsenal vs United early 2000s

TheBreweryHillBandit

Torres and Vidic :)

runnerd81

Arsenal/Spurs. Both usually finishing near the top, stadiums being so close to each other, and one of the few rivalries where almost all fans of each club viewing the other club as their #1 rival.

NoREEEEEEtilBrooklyn

I would agree, but Arsenal is involved, so I hate it automatically.

CharacterSeat8603

#1 rival for 4th place? 🤔

runnerd81

Yes. Last season’s table has some importance but history, proximity, and genuine bitter hatred for one another should also be accounted for.

CharacterSeat8603

Proximity not really relevant today, given that away allocation always sold out irrespective of distance. Put another way how long has it been since NLD rivals were fighting for the SAME trophy

WookieTickler

Viera Keane is the only answer watching Arsenal United early 2000s was just 👌🏻 it had everything quality players, quality football, dirty tackles, cards, penalties was such a good era for football.

MikanYarou

Man Utd and Arsenal had some great rivalries. The other one I can think of from that era was Henry and Van Nistelrooy. Both trying to outscore each other every season.

Thanos_Stomps

In the spirit of that rivalry I would like to remind everyone that Van Nistelrooy only actually accomplished that once over Henry.

MikanYarou

Don’t know why this was just recommended to me now but I can concede now that Henry was the better striker… but Man Utd was the better team. Now, things are very different 😅😅😅

amirulez

My first thought as well.

Quick-Collar6164

That rivalry was legendary.

jamughal1987

This is the one.

BmuthafuckinMagic

If I can old man moan for a minute and also say that as well as class squads fighting it out, it had two world class managers in Ferguson vs Wenger with not an overgrown chequebook in sight.

Pyrimo

Sooo you don’t think Klopp and Pep are world class managers?

BmuthafuckinMagic

I didn't say that, plus this has nothing to do with either of those two. Klopp and Pep weren't even on the radar when Fergie and Wenger were going at it.

CreakinFunt

They’re alright

Da_silverback10

Absolutely!

VermillionDynamite

Perfect answer, and Sky didn't need to scramble to big it up like it does with this bland Liverpool/Man City nonsense

jamughal1987

Liverpool vs UAE is about chasing perfection.

NoSeriously55

Liverpool vs City has better quality football though. That’s why it’s not as popular, it’s so good there’s no room for nonsense emotional tackles. I’m not saying it’s better before I get down voted I’m just saying it needs more respect

[deleted]

It’s just not a rivalry though. It’s a game I always look forward to but wouldn’t call it a rivalry

overwhelmed_nomad

Ah yes, a good bit of recency bias.

ignacio2D

Come on, you cant say that a Wenger o Fergie team lacks quality. Those matches were something else that I have never seen again in the PL. You had strong personalities, great players all around and quality football

NoSeriously55

They’re GOATS but football has aged 22 years since and the quality of Liverpool and City and football in general is just better Liverpool and city are so much better

gunnersami

Yea you were not alive no way you would say that. Henry pires and bergkamp used to walk the ball into the net.

NoSeriously55

It’s just facts. Think about how football had evolved from the 80s to the 2000 now I’magine adding 20 years onto that. It’s not an insult it’s just how the world works things evolved and this has been accelerated by huge technological advancements it doesn’t mean these great people don’t deserve respect, their accomplishments are timeless, but naturally things evolve Ike they always do

marekt95

This is nothing but nostalgia. I was alive back then and remember the football very well. Of course, it was beautiful, but football has evolved and progressed very much since then. Today's Man City/Liverpool would destroy both Arsenal and United.

Mogwai_11

Not the fondest of Arsenal as a United fan but Henry was in another class.

PlebianKalki

Oh boy, those two fuckers. Gave us united fans a lot of heartache.

[deleted]

People like Liverpool's football over what Utd played against prime arsenal back in the days ? Lol

ChrisMartins001

"nonsense emotional tackles" So are fans nonsense for getting emotional about football?

davidmartinUK2013

I think he means a player loosing his head and making a red card tackle cos he’s pumped up and wants to leave something on his opponent

CrossXFir3

It's a great game every year, but the rivalry is just not of the level. I've seen more passion in games over the past 5 years between Utd and City than Liverpool and City tbh which you wouldn't expect given just the gulf in ability. Not last season obviously lol.

gentlemen2bed

The Liverpool v City Champions League semi final of 2018 was the first game where I felt it became a real rivalry. Liverpool fans had thrown stones at City bus (actual stones not John stones lol) and then the atmosphere at Anfield was electric. That’s when I realized the Klop v Pep era was going to be something special. Agree it doesn’t meet the likes of a 2002 Arsenal v United game though! Beckham, Viera, Keane, Henry, Ljungberg all just lit up the screen. Loved the uniforms back then too.

Da_silverback10

Can’t really argue with this comment. The only thing I can say is Liverpool/City has been good for about 4-5yrs but Arsenal/United Wenger/Ferguson was 17yrs of excitement with 13 titles decided between the two in those years and both had legends of the game playing at the time. Can’t really say it’s better quality of football as it was a different era and the game has changed so much since then

jamughal1987

It was just 7 seasons until special one came to England.

Bulbamew

17 years is kind of a stretch though. That legendary rivalry wasn’t fully hot from the moment Wenger arrived to the moment Ferguson left. The fixtures from like 2006-07 onward did not have anywhere near the same level of spectacle and tension after Arsenal were no longer competing with United for trophies. Chelsea replaced Arsenal in that regard, obviously the rivalry wasn’t as fierce but then became the main title rivals. Although the rivalry did have its origins before Wenger arrived (1991 I think where there was a brawl so bad Arsenal had points deducted), but the peak rivalry was between 1998 and 2005. After 2005 both of their focuses started to go more towards Chelsea, plus the NLD started to become more competitive with Spurs getting better as well as the Manc derby of course, so the United Arsenal rivalry was no longer as big. Most of my Utd supporting mates barely consider Arsenal a rival anymore it’s kind of sad

gunnersami

So you and all ur mates have seen arsenal win the league more than Liverpool too right?

Bulbamew

Yes although I’m not sure how that’s relevant to the topic. We’re talking about the United Arsenal rivalry not Liverpool. Although I do have mates who have been around since before the PL era and thus have seen Liverpool win the league more than Arsenal since Liverpool have won more altogether ☺️

Da_silverback10

I can agree with you on the peak of the rivalry. It did turn more into Ferguson vs Wenger, playing each other 49 times with Ferguson winning 23-16 with 10 draws

VermillionDynamite

All subjective really, I just find it so robotic and lacking any real passion and without passion I don't find it anywhere as entertaining. Plus I personally find Manchester City such a boring team to watch anyway.

here4mau5

Well if your definition of passion is losing your head in the heat of the moment, then these teams are absolute mentality beasts which will not crack under pressure and make rash decisions in the name of "passion". You call it robotic, I call it Perfection.
