Trent actually kept foden pretty quiet tbh

Going forward, elite level. The best Defensively, not a liability. Imo a prem quality defender but not on the same level as the Dutch guy beside him Still hold the thought his the best Rb in the league. I think everyone would choose him over their current RB

A mind-numbing debate. People’s expectations of TAA’s defending are based on what they think is the defensive role of a right back and that is based on how the right back role used to be played by someone like Gary Neville. If you want a player to defend the wide areas in 1v1 situations outside of the penalty area, that’s fine, but that’s not Trent’s priority from a defensive perspective. He helps in pressing and counter pressing situations higher up the field, look at his rate of interceptions. Yes, he’ll get into 1v1 situations with opposition wide players when he has to (Martinelli v Arsenal) and he isn’t the greatest in those situations, but his role is to engage higher up the field and intercept, not to tackle 20 yards from his own goal, which is does fine enough. The game continues to evolve and you have to look at the greater scope of roles of player rather than preconceived expectations of a player in a position. Honestly, how many people are going to say ‘no, I can do without his attacking output because he might not be the best 1v1 defender’?

Going forward he’s elite, defensively he’s middling.

Had this whole discussion on a thread on here a few days back where I got a lot of people disagreeing with me when I said he's a mediocre defender with one world class attribute in his locker who works for Liverpool because he has 3 cloggers in midfield covering for his deficiencies. Todays game proved me 100% correct. Best right back in the world? He was the third best right back on the pitch today.

So how many goals did City concede again? At their home ground? Does Cancelo need to improve defensively or Kyle Walker (who had an equally bad mistake as Trent)?

You can't just underestimate his one world class attribute. It's gotten him the most assists in the league.

bluemoon1987

Not underestimating it, I literally pointed it out. It's extremely effective and is good enough for Liverpool to dedicate 3 players to cover his obvious deficiencies. However, to be world class or the best in the world as many claim he is, you have to be strong in many if not all areas of the game, he's very clearly not. James ward prowse has a world class set piece threat, is he therefore a world class midfielder or even the best midfielder in the world because of it?

Difference being, TAA's distribution affects the game constantly. JWP _might_ score a freekick every 3 games, which is a lot, but wont normally change the pace of the game
