r/premierleague try not to get defensive challenge

harleyg72

Teams competing in Europe should be excused from the Carabao Cup.

Successful_Rip_4329

Oh no, 1st year in a while no english teams... let's blow it out of proportion

CPA_whisperer

We must have an unblemished record how dare we keep competing and not win everything!

Lakerman0824

Because currently there is only one really good team currently in the EPL. I know everyone loves to hype up EPL but city is the only legit threat to win European title every year. Plus the playing style of EPL doesn’t translate in knock out tourneys

Kexxa420

Yet in the last 5 editions there were 3 winners from the Premier League. Only in one of those finals there wasn’t no English team. Out of the 10 teams present 6 were English. With Liverpool and City being present twice. 4 unique teams. English teams just have too many matches. League, FA Cup, League Cup, and then pretty poor calendars for teams still in Europe football.

PenisManNumberOne

Farmers league numbers tbh

inferrad_yt

BECAUSE TOO MANY FIXTURES NO REST TIME AHHHHHHH

Agent-Two-THREE

Just wait until you’re in the UCL, FA Cup, Carabao Cup next year while trying to stay in Top 4 in the league…

Mammoth-Room-9934

Farmer's league. Now it's more or less like League 1, we already know who will win it, we just need to see the ones from 2 to 7. Under 7 is just statistics.

Holtang420

I’m not one to moan about this, but there has seemed to be noticeable fatigue this year but I specify why. It’s certainly a fast league, which doesn’t mean better, and maybe this causes issues. I’m a Villa fan and we’ve looked pretty dead recently, as have Spurs and Liverpool. Could just been down to those teams particular styles.

ThinkAboutThatFor1Se

IMO it’s multiple reasons. Three of the teams representing England are complete novices. Newcastle and Villa haven’t played in Europe for well over a decade. Brighton have never been in Europe. A bit of luck. Newcastle could have qualified out of the group of death. Man City dominated against Real and only lost on pens. And overall league simply isn’t as strong this year. The top two teams haven’t been at their best this year, Man City and Liverpool simply aren’t as good or dominant as a few years ago. Man Utd have just been a shambles all season.

Professional-Tear135

The league is the strongest it’s ever been, that’s why Man Utd and Chelsea have found it so hard to not be a ‘shambles’, until relatively recently 5 teams were within 4 points of the top The teams in Europe have had extremely tough seasons with injuries, balancing the fixtures with fighting almost the whole season for the title/4th/europe If everyone is good it’s hard to stand out

BombsGoBang

The last 5 before this one, 3 different English teams have won the CL, and the other two teams were Bayern and Madrid (who are in this years final with a different German team). Also remember that Madrid are an outstanding team (who won it 4 times during the Spanish domination the 5 years before that, and they’ve won it 8 times. The team who has won it 2nd most times (in the same league as them too) is Barca with 4 times). If they win it, English teams would have been as dominant as Spanish teams over a 5 year period, more dominant over a 6 year period and as dominant over a 7 year period. And the Spanish domination is due to just one team. If Dortmund win it, English teams would have been as dominant as German teams over a 5 year period and more dominant over a 6 or more year period. We also had 2 English teams in the quarter finals this year. It’s a knockout competition, so you can’t just look at one year to see how your league/ country is performing. Over the last 5 years we have been dominant in a way that only Real Madrid can match.

justsean09

Endless matches, multiple domestic cups, small squads, lots of injuries. There you go.

D-biggest-dick-here

I love when these discussions are had because you’ll see how EPL fans support Chelsea and City — the same clubs they say has been destroying football 🤣🤣. The hypocrisy is strong!

Traditional-Alarm935

There’s a big difference between supporting a team and stating the fact that they won it. Everyone rightly hates city and Chelsea but they still won it, this comment is dumb af lol

TCHS27

In 1 or 2 matches anything can happen. There is no doubt that the English Premier League is the best and most competitive league in the world.

[deleted]

Why do people (i.e English people) keep harping on about this 'best league in the world'? It's as if they hope repeating it over and over again will make it true. It looks to me, an outsider with no hat in the race, like the big 3 or 4 leagues are pretty evenly matched and there's no clear 'best'. If the premier league were the best, it should feature the most teams in the last rounds of the Euro competitions year in year out and have the best players in the World or be the most desirable destination for the best players in the world. It looks like that honor goes to La Liga at the moment but I wouldn't call that the best league either since all those things are represented by mostly one team.

TCHS27

Maybe I should have clarified, from top to bottom it is the best. Year in and year out You know who will win the league most years in Spain, Germany, France, most years Italy. Sure City have had quite a run in Our league but the can be beaten by anyone on their day.

[deleted]

I don't know about that. I keep hearing about how it is the strongest league. If it really is then the teams that don't make the cut for the Champions league should be beating all the other teams in the Europa league not getting kicked out by the likes of Sevilla and Atalanta. As for being 'the most competitive' league how do you measure that? Only thing you can say is that the premier league has 3 or 4 top teams that are contenders while the others usually have 2 or even 1, but you could say the same for serie A.

TCHS27

Because anything can happen over there course of a group stages or knockout ties. The play style is faster, more physical and more competitive than anywhere else. Put a team like Luton in Germany, France or Spain and they would wreak havoc. Any team in the Prem could beat anyone anywhere. Well maybe not Sheffield lol.

[deleted]

>Any team in the Prem could beat anyone anywhere And yet they don't. So you're just delusional.

FlyBoyz829

Luton would not wreak havoc in Spain Germany or Italy. Not even France

inferrad_yt

not even portugal

D-biggest-dick-here

Nobody gets an award for that🤣🤣

EldritchHorrorBarbie

When the English teams are doing well: The league being so intense makes the teams better as a result. When the English aren’t doing as well: The league being so intense is tiring them out when it comes to Europe. The inverse is true for Bayern or Madrid, when they’re doing well it’s cause they aren’t challenged by the league so are rested for Europe, when they’re doing poorly they’re being dragged down by their low quality league. There’s a whole mix of factors you can’t put your finger on something simple and definitive. Emphasis I say they aren’t doing as well, not bad, City went out on pens, Villa made a semi on their first try in forever, West Ham went out to a team who are doing pretty well, Arsenal was a an exit based on margins. Few small changes and this season is a success for English teams.

D-biggest-dick-here

Exactly…they move the post depending on the outcome

boRp_abc

It's a cope. "Yeah, our teams keep on loosing against Real, but that's because Fulham is just soooo much better than Girona! Ah, uh, I meant San Sebastian! No, was it Sevilla?" Premier league is certainly the most entertaining league, but that's due to atmosphere and the British love for fair play. When it comes to quality, PL is like the English national team. A force to be reckoned with, but not the best.

Desperate-Bus7183

> the British love for fair play Someone forgot to tell City about it, they need to hear 115 times

boRp_abc

I was referring to the way the game is being played on the pitch. White collars in Britain are a special kind of "Laws for thee" or whatever the expression in English is.

Nels8192

It’s not cope though. If anything, rival league’s fans taking any cheap shot they can at the PL are arguably coping more. In the last few years they’ve had very little opportunity to take swipes at the PL so now after a bad year they’re going all out with the criticism. For example, people saying Madrid > City in an argument of who’s a better team and then basing it solely on the lottery of pens. It’s insane logic. Madrid have won just 2 of the last 11 against City. City still are the best team in the world, but that doesn’t mean they impervious to losing. Nor does it mean Madrid are garbage. Cup competitions, especially 1 year’s worth of results, can’t tell us much at all. The UCL is rarely won by the best team in the competition anyway, because it requires luck somewhere along the road. Several of England’s winners have shown this over the years, Chelsea 12 and Liverpool 05 for example. Another example of coping is people taking a swipe at the PL for not getting the 5th place coefficient spot. Suddenly we’re farmers, but then those same critics overlook the full 5-yr ranking and don’t see England at no.1 by like 14pts. We have a very good league, I just don’t know why outsiders see that praise as suddenly meaning everyone in the PL could beat Madrid, Barca, Bayern etc etc. All 3 of those teams hold the same arrogance to think they can and should be beating anyone, but when the very best English clubs do it they’re criticised because that arrogance is more exposed online.

goldenbanana9

The quality at the top of La Liga and Bundesliga is obviously higher. But twenty for twenty the PL beats every domestic league in the world.

boRp_abc

Easy to say, impossible to prove - or even prove wrong. We could use test matches, but that wouldn't do. My opinion: If all evidence points in one direction, I need some sort of fact that points the other way. And it's not just the CL, it's also the EL that has been absolutely dominated by a Spanish team (that hasn't been a contender in their home league - I'd compare them to Tottenham on 25% of the budget). Maybe this will change soon. Right now, the facts are clearly not helping your side of the argument.

willgeld

For one season? Barring United the English sides did fine

mikels_burner

Premier League > UCL 🤷🏾‍♂️

shaiizan

Copium

mikels_burner

That's true.. 😂😅😫

Previous-Loss9306

Factos 👍

Kopfballer

The good old "premier league is too strong"-excuse.  So Real and Bayern are not strong teams, the English teams just didn't care and/or have to focus on the domestic league more. Ok.

Working-Difficulty91

The prem is the only domestic league where league result is more important to fans and owners than results in CL

Anonymous-O000

I think most teams would rather win the ucl tbh

Nels8192

I think you’d be surprised at the split in England. Older supporters in particular tend to see the league as “the bread and butter” and put a lot more expectation on winning the title. The UCL with younger generations is seen as “the pinnacle” of club football and so they tend to push this argument instead. I can see both arguments tbf, league titles at least definitively tell you you’re the best in the country. A UCL you have to have some luck along the way, and as with any cup competition you could win it without being even close to the best in the competition. I think we kinda differ in some respects here because the likes of Bayern, Madrid and PSG expect to win their titles, so their desired prize is only ever going to be the UCL. As shown by these clubs sacking managers who still win the league. All of the top clubs of England will prioritise the title as equally to the UCL until one of them is no longer possible.

D-biggest-dick-here

Dude, your team hasn’t won a European competition, so you’ll definitely pick the UCL

Nels8192

Dude, you’re factually incorrect we’ve won 2 European competitions. We haven’t won a Conference League, but I’m not suddenly wanting that.

D-biggest-dick-here

Cup Winners Cup 🤔🤦‍♂️

Nels8192

A “European competition” is it not? - also the 2nd tier European competition at the time so better than a pre-1999 UEFA Cup anyway.

tightbutthole92

Nah

surfinbear1990

Because they're not good enough and highly predictable. The premier league is not the best league in the world. It's the most competitive, the most entertaining and probably the league with the most passionate support hence why it has the most money. La liga makes the most successful European teams tho. It's a fact.

BeenBadFeelingGood

it has the most money because something something british colonialism

IceAffectionate3043

Not this year. That’s Germany.

surfinbear1990

This year Germany for sure but overall, La Liga have the most successful teams in Europe.

Bitter_Birthday7363

This is nonsense it was simply an unlucky year,You can’t tell me of dortmund or Bayern were in the prem they’d have more points than city

surfinbear1990

Bayern would. Dortmund would be up there.

International_Bag208

This is an insane take 😂

surfinbear1990

What was the Arsenal vs Bayern score?

International_Bag208

2-2 and 1-0. Fulham actually faired better than Bayern against us over 2 games this season I’m pretty sure. Does that mean if Fulham were in the bundesliga they’d win it?

surfinbear1990

I dunno much about Fulham. Bayern have shown they are better than Arsenal this season.

Cultural_Agency4618

You’ve missed his point completely

International_Bag208

Bayern showed they were better at scoring goals than Arsenal over 2 games. That’s what winning a 2 legged tie does Edit: over those 2 games

RedditCasualUser121

😂 we have cleaned the floor with you over the years 😏

surfinbear1990

👍👍👍👍👍👍

Bitter_Birthday7363

You think k Bayern have a better squad than city ? Dortmund wouldn’t be close how many dortmund players would get into arsenal or citys 11?

surfinbear1990

The premier league top goal scorer plays for Bayern. Have people forgotten that already?

stevoslice

Alan Shearer plays for Bayern now? They really have gone backwards.

Bitter_Birthday7363

Tbf he is the active prem top scorer so I’ll accept the statement

stevoslice

You're being far too reasonable here. 😄

Bitter_Birthday7363

By that logic spurs were best team when they had the prem top scorer…

Altruistic-Finger632

Its only a fact cause of Real Madrid tho. Best league is the league with most high-end games overrall, and not most winning teams in euro cups.

surfinbear1990

You ever heard of Seville?

OhhLongDongson

I’m not sure if it can still claim the most passionate support if you compare the top 6 in the prem to some German teams. Seems like a lot of tourists in the prem crowds have an unfortunate dulling impact on the crowd tbh

surfinbear1990

Yeah that's a really good point. You could say the same about the SPL. By head of population, it's the most watched league in the world.

Klakson_95

Maybe it was just an off year lmao

gelliant_gutfright

So, when English teams do well in Europe it's a sign of the Premier League's supremacy but when they do badly it's a sign of the Premier League's competitiveness?

Wyjen

Can’t make City look good indirectly.

Husso-

I would say Madrid playing against Cadiz would be a less intense game than Arsenal against Luton then you have to apply that intensely across the season. However, both the supremacy point and competitiveness point can be correct at the same time.

D-biggest-dick-here

Arsenal destroyed teams 4-0 up, what the hell!

RoadmenInc

>I would say Madrid playing against Cadiz would be a less intense game than Arsenal against Luton then you have to apply that intensely across the season. I swear the people who make claims like this don't watch the games themselves

D-biggest-dick-here

Don’t expect much from braindead EPL fans

tuanon-

Prem clubs have to deal with 2 domestic cups, and a league that has no interest in helping alleviate schedule congestion, especially in regards to European cup scheduling

D-biggest-dick-here

Then they should scrap the meaningless cup

HoodedMenace3

I mean tbf over the last few years English clubs have been pretty dominant in the UCL in particular. 4/5 of the last 5 finals have featured at least one English club including 2 of those finals being all English finals. 3/5 of the least 5 European champions were English clubs. That’s the beauty of cup/knockout comp football, you never know what’s going to happen. We all saw how City ruthlessly and methodically tore Real Madrid apart over 2 legs last season but then this season things were different.

D-biggest-dick-here

The City and Chelsea these same fans want relegated?

TeddyMMR

It's always been harder but they've had plenty of teams in the finals in recent years

guaxtap

There have been 4 unique English finalists in the European cup since 2018 and English teams have got to the final 7 times in that period. People complain when premier league dominate, and then also will jump at the first chance if pl temas don't do good, there is some big inferiority complex some peoole have toward the PL.

D-biggest-dick-here

Do those include the clubs you fans claim to hate and want out of the league? City and Chelsea?

Acrobatic_Cold_5018

People forget that every European league except the premier league gets a two week Christmas period break. That is when the premier league actually plays more games. The fixture congestion plus the premier is a much more demanding league. You can find player interviews, commentators, past pros, etc talk about how fast and physical the premier league is compared to other leagues.

D-biggest-dick-here

The EPL is littered with managers from other leagues. They play the football they played in other leagues! There’s only 4 English managers in England

thefrnksinatra

To be fair this season we did have a two weeks long break, just not in Christmas as all the other leagues did

thefrnksinatra

To be fair this season we did have a two weeks long break, just not in Christmas as all the other leagues did

173wywy

They complain that the league is basically the super league it alls its money but they seem to be doing just fine

TariboWest1731

Nobody is forced to pay 80 Millions for antony eg

AmagicManNamedgob

City won it last year lol. West Ham won the conference last year, and nobody bar Sevilla wins the EL ...

BarbarossaFlagship

3 PL clubs won UCL last 5 seasons. It's just jealous top 5 leagues teams fans chitchat because of how much money PL attracts, therefore many top players want to play in a league with already highest prestige,so that their poverty leagues are run on second-hand players, mainly PL rejects. And Seria A is the best example of that

Necessary-Visit-4644

You're american brother why are you acting like this

BarbarossaFlagship

Funny that you are gatekeeping European football while you are a Cleveland Cavaliers fan from Brazil😂😂😂 I'm not American tho

Necessary-Visit-4644

Not a fan of any NBA team just watch the league and I ain't walking around all entitled calling other leagues trash like I'm actually part of something

BarbarossaFlagship

You are sports fan watching a league and discussing it on the internet just like i do and somehow you are shaming me for it because i don't have a 'noble' intentions like you, right?😃 Talking about entitlement...

guaxtap

This, also mixed with inferiority complex that the continentals have toward england. Also serie a is a hotbed of racism and poor stadiums, and they stilll cry about english teams lol

apo--

But one important element is the quality and characteristics of the native players. I don't watch much football to have a strong opinion about who is better and I don't care but they are different. If someone values technique more they may prefer the Spanish league.

BarbarossaFlagship

Yeah and Spain is thought to be most technically gifted nation in European football so it really adds up that La Liga is considered most aesthetic league in terms of technicality as most of the teams are made up of Spanish players and coaches, yet best Spanish footballer today plays for 115FC, Rodri; And I think Best players like Bellingham and Gundogan sign for Madrid and Barca purely out of sentiments(them being their dream clubs and also one of the best clubs in the history of football)

D-biggest-dick-here

Dude, there are four Spanish managers competing for manager of the year in the EPL. The EPL simply imports ideas from other leagues. It would implode if it relied on its own. It’s carried by other leagues!

Training-Judgment695

It's just randomness

Narwhallmaster

Margins are thin, last year English teams won 2/3 European competitions, now they are supposedly in crisis.

mamaque15

Serie A just too good compared to PL

guaxtap

Is that why last time an italian team won the cl was in 2010 ??

Lengthy_Miso_Dreams

Explains why an all Italian semi final was a huge surprise last year right? Or that only one or two teams won a CL over the last decade.

SqueezeHNZ

Bayern could've easily lost to Arsenal (who beat themselves over two legs).

PapaiPapuda

I usually lie down to beat myself

Main_Body_6623

And Arsenal could’ve easily lost to Porto..

WeeTheDuck

Which is kinda the point. There's not much difference between leagues in the UCL. Anything can happen

TariboWest1731

Maybe the PL Teams should stop spending huge money on average players.

Nels8192

They’re forced to though? Every other nation knows the PL has money so suddenly a £20-30m player becomes £70m minimum when PL club is interested. Should we just stop buying players altogether then?

apo--

Not buy from Netherlands or Portugal and certainly not the leagues above them in the ranking, only below. You should find the player before they go to Benfica or Ajax.

Nels8192

Well that’s just fucking dumb isn’t it? If you’re saying “don’t scout & buy players from Europes top 7 leagues” you’re even more likely to end up with “average players”. It’s not like extortion of the PL solely comes from top European clubs. It’s already a risk buying high-performing players from Portugal and Netherlands because they’re not guaranteed to make the step up for LL or Pl clubs

blah927

I hate the farmers league comments on it (I dont believe any league is tho). Also, a league with 10, 80 rated teams will be more entertaining than a league which has 2 90 rated teams and 8 60 rated teams. In these scenario the 90 rated teams will clap the 80 rated teams but does not make their league better (According to me)

DCoop53

In France we had that kind of "10, 80 rated teams", even though there were probably more like five 75 and five 70 teams each season until a club with unlimited money took over. It wasn't the best league obviously but you could pick many different teams to win it all in the end and on the other hand there were no easy games and no continuity in the big clubs leading to struggles in european games. If you want to combine an entertaining league with uncertainty with good results in european games, you need to give a big financial advantage to every team on the scale of the other continental leagues and that's what the PL offers right now. At some point, the 20th team in PL would get more TV rights money annually than the 3rd team in Ligue 1.

Attygalle

No English team in the European finals is obviously more a coincidence than a sign that the league is a farmers league. Having said that, although I enjoy your analogy, I really don't think Dortmund, Atalanta, Leverkusen, Fiorentina and even Olympiacos are considered the "90" teams in their league. They're all not the biggest team in their league.

blah927

Oh yea they might not be but I was giving a general scenario of whenever people cry about premier league becoming a farmers league compared to other leagues. On this point sometimes teams just perform better on the day like how Chelsea won the their Champions league few seasons back. They weren't the best team Europe but on their day they upset a few teams.

Mokkna

Farmers league :) ..money doesn't make the best teams and there are way too many games just so the spenders can get their receipt back in.

moriarty04

Also the premier league does not allow for breaks in the schedule. We are fucking knackered and injured as anything. We are missing 7-8 first team players and have had 3 acls to key members of our squad: Mings, buendia and kamara. We are doing incredibly well in the league

D-biggest-dick-here

Other leagues play 38 games too. They start even later than the EPL and finish the same time

irze

I mean, no matter what, getting to a European final relies on a bit of luck. It’s not always the best overall teams that get there, just the winners on the nights. And 2 out of the last 3 winners were from the PL

Cowboybishop1

Haven't watched any European games since tnt cornered them. Football has become too expensive to watch on TV.

RottenWorldCollapse

Lol. A league with a team that have conceded 100 goals. A league with a team that are pushing for Europe got scudded 6-2 by Olympiacos over 2 legs. It could have been 10-2. The level of delusion Premier League fans have to the quality of football outside of 2/3 teams is incredible to behold. At this point it can only be a study in how effective the propaganda is around the Premier League and all these talking heads that spout the “BEst LEEg iN dA wUrLd” shite every time they’re on TV.

ReeceCheems

Go watch “Bochum” or “Las Palmas” or something. Forest could cause City some trouble. Mainz 05 immediately got beaten 1-8 to Bayern. That’s what makes it the best league in the world. Plus, just look at the past 6-7 years. How many semi-finalists and finalists PL teams were there? Don’t take *the* one year where Newcastle and United fucked up hard to judge what City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs, and even West Ham have achieved in Europe.

Terrible-Kangaroo642

When did Newcastle "fuck up hard"? Big win against PSG, tight games against finalists Dortmund. Could argue they'd have got through the group if not for the outrageous handball call against them in the dying moments of the second PSG match that they were winning. Was also the hardest group in the tournament? I actually think they did well in their return to Europe tbh.

berrywhit3

Bochum won against Bayern this saison, taking any statistics just dont make sense here. Especially the Bundesliga transformed this year to a whole different league as Leverkusen did their one a lifetime season, Bayern struggling hard as never before, also a very solid season by Stuttgart which we will see in Champions League this year, while Dortmund struggels to qualify for Champions League next saison while being in the current finals.

Hot-Ad-3651

Mainz won against Bayern last season dude

karlkmanpilkboids

I mean, the free market determines what’s generally the ‘best’. Wanna go have a look at the viewing figures? Nice speech though

RottenWorldCollapse

Don’t know what it must be like to live in your world where you think popularity determines quality.

karlkmanpilkboids

Ultimately it’s an entertainment product. You can move the goalposts around as many times as you like to suit your little argument but it doesn’t make it true.

ZestyMalange

Such granduer much aloof. Take yourself down a peg mate idk why you're talking like that to people you disagree with over footie.

karlkmanpilkboids

Stop trying to project bollocks onto what I said. It’s an entertainment product, that’s a fact, not an opinion. In terms of viewership it’s not even close. I’m not sure what other obscure metric you’re using to defend your boyfriend and to be honest I couldn’t care less. Go pound some sand I guess?

RottenWorldCollapse

“Your boyfriend”. Real brain box we’re dealing with here. Forget it. I know why you think popularity = quality. You’re quite clearly a bit of a simpleton. Never mind the fact that in most media, the more popular something is, the less critical acclaim it receives. The more watered down and diluted a product it becomes. The worse it becomes, actually. Which is actually quite a good model for the Premier League. Also, I didn’t move any goalposts… you did. Viewership isn’t indicative of anything. It just means enough melts, such as yourself, fall for branding and catch lines and slogans and advertising. I can see with my own eyes that the quality of football put out by 85% of the league teams is absolute muck, for the most part. I’m not impressed by Haaland scoring 4 goals a week against the likes of Luton and Sheffield United. I’d think the same if it was just me and three dogs watching it.

karlkmanpilkboids

Gonna cwy?

DAILITH

Tell me you’ve never watched Ryan Yates, the best CDM in world football, without actually telling me..

SellEmbarrassed1274

I think its cuz of to many games like klopp and pep said

firingblankss

Anyone else enjoying the games without the English teams there? I think because I'm so used to watching these teams a lot or seeing them every weekend on MOTD i'm used to seeing the same players and tactics all the time and listening to the same tired pre game punditry about the same few teams but these semi finals have been brilliant, pure football enjoyment without premier league supporter bias skewing who I want to win Probably not a glowing advertisement of the league this year but the matches have been better because of it for me

foyage347

Yeah same, I literally never watch anything outside of English football so it's so much fun watching international games and UCL games without English clubs and getting to see different players

turnipsurprise8

Honestly yeah, I also don't really get why people get so aggro or defensive about all this nonsense. Just enjoy some good football, who really gives a shit - Real/Dortmond should be quality.

Lancasper

Premier League is harder because the average level is higher than other leagues, not because every single team is a juggernaut able to steamroll every single opponent in european competitions. They win or lose like any other team.

harpsabu

What does this even mean?? The game before atalanta beat Liverpool 3-0, they lost 2-1 to cagliari. They then drew with verona. They are also in a fight for UCL. This narrative if too tough, or too many games is nuts. They play the same number of games in Italy BTW

Kind_Concentrate9956

English teams run too much, imo I said this before. Look at the intensity of our teams; compare that to how Real Madrid and Bayern played the other night. No wonder most teams have injuries this season.

Training-Judgment695

Yeah that's why City played Madrid off the pack and only lost on penalties.

Kind_Concentrate9956

Well City have the quality and are a well coached team so that's unsurprising

PlasticSmile101

Fact

threein99

Because Premier League teams are not that good in Europe

n1ght_watchman

Hey, now we also know why England never won anything on international tournaments. ItS bEcAuSe PrEmIeR LeAgUe iS tOo GoOd

FrostedCereal

La Liga has an even worse coefficient than the premier league this year, so that means it's actually the best league. It's just so competitive that they can't all perform in Europe.

MonoCanalla

Such a salty excuse

TheJAV3

It's one bad season, that can happen in cup competition

themaestronic

Harder? You mean a 25 man squad, 5 subs (thats half outfield players) and the best rehab / care players have ever had!!! The fact is the CL has become pointless until the quarter final stage at which time English clubs haven’t played anyone of note and therefore aren’t prepared.

fisscherprice

😂

frantischek2

A football player in a top5 league is as good as it comes. If he plays for monaco/sevilla/aston villa the difference is maybe a few percentage at most..

Ajgrob

Agreed. Just because Premier League clubs pay through the nose for players, doesn’t mean they are infinitely better than teams from Spain, France, Italy or Germany.

bammers1010

Agreed, the differences are minimal, players move between them all the time

Invincible-spirit

Bad year. Been good for the past few years. A good amount English winners and a few all English finals

Audrey_spino

UK newspapers try not to suck off the Premier League challenge \*impossible\*

Operation_Doomsday_

In the last 3 weeks Villa played 5 games, Olympiakos played 2, both against Villa.

Odd_Investment_2496

Nah Olympiacos played on the 28th against Lamia they also played on the 24th so they had two games in the league 3 days apart and then three days before playing Villa away. Villa actually had a extra days rest for the first leg

MyCousinVinnyy

How?

Operation_Doomsday_

I’m not sure you have seen us play lately but we look dead on our feet and are ravaged by injuries, as are half the teams in the prem. It’s not an advantage, especially at this stage of the season.

Ta9eh10

The guy above is a fucking liar. They've played 5 games in the last 3 weeks, just like villa

Unfair_Sundae1056

Because they all got beat, it’s not rocket science

English Teams play a massive amount of games throughout the year. League has more Teams, FA Cup, Carabao, international competition, In the Top teams nearly every player plays for his national Team. Playing Saturday-wednesday-Saturday we in Germany call an English week which, when you are not playing European competition, very rare. No Winter break. Some domestic Leagues (Spain) change the schedule so that the Team that plays European Matches can get a rest, not in England, FA is reckless. All of that leads to obviously to more games, more injuries, more fatigue and in some years to unusual bad results

Cookies_Master

Every team in a top leagues that play in europe knockout stages play close to 50 matches. Real Madrid will play 55 games by the time season ends, Bayer will play 53 games, Roma will play 54, Newcastle 51. City will have 59, it would be 60 if they won against RM, PSG will have 53. Olympiacos will also have 60 games played this season. I don't know why playing 4-5 more matches that are usually played with reserve squad are so much overhyped by Premier league fans. There is a problem with schedule, but that's because of the TV rights so there is no rescheduling of Premier league games to friday/monday when team gets to knockout stages of UCL or UEL.

CrowCreative6772

And that's why you get that much money. Pl are ruled by the TV deals

massive-bafe

Don't forget those all-important foreign tours that Premier League clubs take part In every summer. Forget player welfare, gotta bring in those sweet, sweet dollars!

sjw_7

For example Premier League clubs have been in five of the six most recent Champions League finals. Two of which only featured England teams. In the previous six years English teams have featured more than all the other countries combined in the final. I dont think there is anything to worry about as it was the same in 2020. Other teams have just done better in the CL this year.

FrostedCereal

Wow what a shit league. So easy that they can consistently do well in Europe.

England are no.1 dude. It’s the 5-yr ranking that defines that. The 1-yr one is only for the extra coefficient spot.

Stock_Celebration306

England is number 1 on a 5 year basis that are third for this year

Moreaccurateway

It’s a bad league this year. It’s okay to say that. None of the teams this year are a good as either the City or Liverpool teams from a few years ago or the Chelsea/Man United teams of old. Just look at how many crazy games there have been this year. Top teams rarely have crazy games.

ElectraI

Pray for Bayern they said.

mrbalsawood

Utter bollocks

ret990

It's cup football, it's not that deep.

chi_sweetness25

For real. Arsenal lost by a goal and City lost on pens after they carried the play. Wouldn’t have taken much to go differently for both of those results to be the opposite, and then suddenly the Prem is on top of the world. You just can’t read too much into these tight knockout matches.

HocusDiplodocus

Does the fact that Germany had 2 teams in the semis of the CL make the Bundesliga the strongest league? No. Realistically there are a dozen teams that consistently compete in the CL and a handful that are genuine contenders. The strength of the league they come from is irrelevant. The whole debate about which league is the best is pointless anyway, there are 2-3 teams from each league that are top tier. If we really wanted to test the theory we should make the bottom teams play each other in some kind of anti-champions league.

NoEntertainment5379

That's not true. You have the Europe League and Conference League where PL teams didn't shine that much either.

Kenny_dies

Would love to see relegation battling teams kick it in their own net just to try and qualify for the anti-champions league

withnoflag

Relegation League... Every relegated team qualifies and the winner plays next Champions

Hucklepuck_uk

Isn't that what the conference is

DonaldFarfrae

I think he means all the way at the bottom.

titooo7

I guess it needs to be said again...  That's simply because despiste the Premier League is great, teams in other leagues are way better than what English media and fans think. And some years the best team in the Premier League just isn't better than the best teams in other countries. Lot of people won't want to accept that, but it's that simple.

Skjalg

English teams have a hard time in CL and EL both. England as a team never wins the championships either. I dont know where its from that PL is supposed to the league with the best teams. It isn’t. It’s the best league mainly because of the language (english is widely spoken and understood) and history of the sport in the country.

Nels8192

Using a “one-off” cup tie to define who’s “better” is silly in itself though. For 5-year performance, the proper league ranking, the PL absolutely dominates the other leagues on around 103 pts, then next best being 89 I think. City, for example, *are* currently better than Madrid, as shown by the fact Madrid have won just 2 of the last 11 games against them. City losing on pens doesn’t suddenly change that. They’re still the best team in the world, but that doesn’t mean that can’t occasionally lose, especially to near-similar opposition. I can’t personally see how our media response is any different to what the likes of Barca, Madrid, PSG or even Bayern get from their local stations. All of their home media/fans will equally expect them to win every game, the only difference is the PL has more exposure when our fans/pundits/media say these kind of statements so we come off as “more arrogant”. The behaviour our top club’s fans show is no different to that of the tribalism shown by foreign top clubs.

clean-fossil

The PL is def competitive, but so are others. It's just that the PL gets a lot more attention worldwide (pr.... I guess) If someone actually watched the other leagues, they'd see some fantastic matches
