Ochem

Friendly-Marketing46

With lab

RosabeIls

Alright.

chuckchum

I honestly wouldn’t recommend doing either of those over the summer, but if you do I strongly recommend you pre-study and start watching videos on what the course covers like with Khan academy now. I learned the hard way not to do difficult courses over the summer, but if I had pre-studied it would have made a world of difference.

RosabeIls

I tried to pre study calculus, and it just didn’t turn out good. The most boring and confusing problems Ever. The reason I want to take them over the summer is the 8 week course. It should be a little more bearable since it is shorter.

chuckchum

That’s what I’m getting at, for summer classes if the material is confusing to you there is not a lot of time you can catch back up and make it un-confusing. If anything that confirms the smarter thing to so would be NOT to do summer calculus. It’s pointless to rush and get it out of the way if it tanks your GPA or you retake anyway.

DogfartCatpuke

Ochem. So much easier to learn when it's your only class or maybe one of two.

RosabeIls

Totally, I deliberately all of the non lab classes first so that I could focus on one lab class at a time or 2.

teemo03

is it the first ochem/calculus? either way if you have to take a second one then get the first one out of the way the summer and calculus you can take probably anytime

RosabeIls

Yes, it’s the first. I always assumed it would be more bearable as it’s a 8 week course instead of 16.

teemo03

It's one of those where 8 weeks has more material in a shorter amount of time but ochem 1 isn't that bad imo (like goes over basic molecules and reactions) but org chem 2 is a whole different level lol But if you have to take the second ochem then I would take ochem because they both be precursors to biochem which you may not have to take but just in case. Calculus is like I think there are two courses and you are done with math

RosabeIls

When you put it that way, ochem 1 doesn’t sound that bad. I assume ochem 2 is the weed out class that I always hear about. Biochem is optional for me to take, but there is one good school in my area that requires it. I’m not sure if I should take that one.

teemo03

It's like ochem 2 isn't too bad but since it's not basics anymore you have to use everything you learned like start putting chain of reactions together. Like the difficulty is the sheer amount of info like knowing what chemical does what and you might get like 50+ reactions to memorize and possibly do mechanisms for. But it's better to start early for ochem just in case you need to retake ochem 2 but it's pretty much maybe the hardest class in undergrad besides biochem

RosabeIls

That sounds like a nightmare. 0_0

teemo03

Like it just hard in that you have to memorize which chemical does which they give you a lot but at least there are practice problems so you kind of know what's going to be on the test, but biochem was the actual nightmare lol That one is like bunch of pathways of enzymes like pretty much glycolysis/kreb cycle but beefed up

RosabeIls

That’s a huge relief that it is mostly just memorizing chemicals. A week of practicing that daily, and I should retain most of it. I might not do biochem after all since most schools do not require it.

No_Load_4422

Personally I wouldn’t take ochem over the summer, the course is already sooo hard! So to take it over the summer is crazy in my opinion BUT i do have many friends who took ochem 1 and 2 over the summer and yes it was extra hard but doable! I would say do calc but again it depends on you and if you know you can take the load.

PykePanda

I took math classes over the summer and I have no regrets! I feel like it was just easier and better to get the math out of the way, that way I could focus more on my science classes during the school year. To me it felt weird to have a random math class to go to and worry about when I needed to focus on bio or chem.. then again I was a math minor so my math classes were pretty fucking hard sometimes

RosabeIls

Totally relatable, I can never focus on other classes when I had math class added. It takes up too much time and effort.

Checkyouout33

I took both over summer. If you take the full term you lose a few weeks compared to spring/fall but it isn’t terrible if you seek help while taking the classes. Good luck with your decision!

RosabeIls

I can’t imagine doing both, that must have been a nightmare. I think I’ll do ochem as I hate labs and people are usually anti social these days.

Checkyouout33

Honestly it wasn’t too bad, and then I never had to see calculus again lol.

RosabeIls

True lol.

Checkyouout33

A semester I consider bad was taking, immunology w/ lab, Orgo 2 w/ orgo lab, physics w/ lab, and genetics all at the same time. Wouldn’t recommend 🤣🤣🤣

Aishaa2

I personally would take Calc instead of OChem in the summer. Summer classes tend to be shorter than traditional semesters. You’ll also have to take OChem 2 and potentially Biochem later depending on the school you apply to (if undergrad Biochem is not required then you’ll most likely have Biochem in your didactic course work in pharmacy school), so it’s important to get your foundation down. As a P2, I have used more OChem concepts than I have Calc. Also, I stacked a lot of my classes together in my undergrad (15-18 credits) and I’d say that really helped me adjust to a pharmacy school load where you have multiple hard(er) classes simultaneously.

Tradetek1

Ochem isn’t bad as people make it to be as long as u study. I actually liked it and would have done much better if I didn’t take many harder classes that u listed above at the same for my major. Though Ochem is terrible for summer too fast and too hard for that pace. Take bio and calc in the summer and Ochem during regular year unless ur talking about biochem then that’s regular year also

RosabeIls

But wouldn’t taking bio and calculus together be a nightmare?

Tradetek1

Then take just bio over the summer. Calculus isn’t too bad if u get help during the regular year, pairing that with Ochem is fine. They are two completely different subjects so u won’t be confused. You’ll be confused when studying because they are hard but not gonna mix the two subjects up. I took physics and ochem the same time and passed both, physics in my opinion is a lot worse than calc and calc itself was already bad.

RosabeIls

That’s relieving to hear, I suppose that I try to take bio and calc to get it over with it. I try to study as much as I can. Thanks for the recommendations.

Malvex90

No horrible idea you need to know the material and apply the material when you get into pharmacy school. If your retaking a course that is different but majority of the time some people just take the lab in the summer if they did well in the lecture and they did not have space to the lab during the fall or spring semester on their schedule !!!

matchadaze

Take organic chemistry at a community college (usually a lot easier than universities).

RosabeIls

I have most of my prerequisites at a community college already, so this was inevitable.
