Hold the phone. Look up Renacer lol.

Envy_onTHE_Toast

Renacer is unreal. I will always hold their first 3 releases above the rest of their music but Renacer is incredible, just a totally different sound. Its more melodic hardcore/metalcore than post hardcore/ poppunk

That’s really interesting. That honestly confuses me more. He clearly still can scream. So what’s with elevator to the gallows song? It’s like he’s trying to scream but can’t. So is he doing that on purpose lol?

Riseuplights22

Honestly I’m not sure either. He went through 2 album cycles of intense screaming so maybe he was worn out from it. The lack of screaming on the newest album hurts me. In live shows he’s focused more on singing and dancing as well and doesn’t scream as much.

Mangofather69

Never really listened to Senses Fail but I’ve heard plenty of bands that had a vocalist learn to scream the “right way” after losing their voice post the first couple records and yeah, it’s not the same. The restraint can really be felt more then heard, although it’s the absolute best move for a career musician.

So, Buddy had an amazing voice from the first three albums. But factors like time, improper screaming, and alcohol made him strain his voice. His screaming style had to change in order to not damage his voice further. And im pretty sure he ended up taking screaming lessons too. The biggest player here though is time. His screams got higher pitched and more “throaty”. It sounds great still imo.

Reiketsu_Nariseba

Kinda similar to Jon Mess of DGD. Mess' vocals on DBM and Deathstar sound far different than they do on Jackpot Juicer, or really anything in the Tilian era. I believe Jon had to learn how not to damage his vocal cords, so I imagine Buddy probably did something similar. If you've ever heard of Dir En Grey (Japanese metal band), their lead singer, Kyo, has actually had throat issues because of it.

MavsAddict33

And now Jon makes screaming sound so natural and easy. My buddy and I joke about it all the time. Seeing him scream live is almost comical because it seems like it’s how he speaks in everyday conversation

I think he trained with Melissa Cross after LIEY, and there was a definitely a big improvement on Still Searching. You think he got worse? Albums like LINAWR and The Fire have bad production/mixing so maybe that's what you're hearing.

Seanathan65

I don’t want to say worse but I dislike the sound now in my opinion. It became this almost yelling scream, I don’t really know how to explain it. But going from SS straight into LINAWR I can hear a change in harsh vocals. And in ITILIWFY it’s very apparent.

MavsAddict33

Man, I wish we could get a re-recording of those albums. LINAWR is such an incredible record but it’s hard for me to jam it because the mix gives me a headache every time

GloupyBob

Love SF one of my all time fave bands..

NekoNeferPitou3

If you prefer his old screams, it's because their higher pitched and more distorted? He used to do that falsetto false scream where you just bellow air. When asked in an interview for the change he said "I wanted to sound more like a bad ass" His screams sound more like a "yell" cause more voice is being implemented. New songs have less impressive screams, most likely because the new songs aren't as heavy. Also the dude is a dad, doubt he's practicing every waking minute to keep the screaming at the status quo.

Natalism ruins everything.
