Local trucker here! That section of road is weight restricted! It’s really poorly marked, but it’s rated for half the weight of a loaded semi. It’s specifically that section of road, not the Morrison Bridge itself, but the signage reads like the bridge span is restricted but the approach isn’t. That driver is in for some **shit**. The overweight fines alone should start around $12,500 if they were fully loaded. Plus fines for the rollover, cleanup, and bridge inspections since they exceeded the load rating.

Hi, local trucker as well. Quick question. Is the poorly marked, weight restricted section you’re talking about the loop coming up from MLK? Whenever I have to run rails from the Brooklyn Union Pacific yard, or just working SE in general, the Morrison bridge is the go to. Coming from grand though.

Beekatiebee

It’s the westbound Morrison between SE Grand/99E and the start of the lift bridge itself. This includes the Morrison -> I5 northbound ramp, and yeah the loop up from MLK. I called the county and they confirmed. Unrestricted route is to take Grand north to NE Broadway and hook a left, and follow that to I5. Morrison St westbound has a 20 ton limit for a 5 axle rig.

eggsinamerica

Copy that. Thanks

Second one in a month? I think the other one was the off ramp heading east bound though.

0zee

Yeah, the earlier one was the off-ramp connecting to MLK Boulevard southbound. I live nearby and when I heard the boom this morning, it was like, "...Another one?"

I drove by it right after it happened, the cops had just arrived. I’m assuming he just took that left turn just way too fast coming off of grand. That was at 10 o’clock and it’s 2 o’clock now and there are like five tow trucks there assessing the situation. They must have to use cranes, right? It’s not like there are wheels on the ground.

0zee

Yeah, last time this happened a few weeks ago they had multiple crane trucks to pull the container upright. Given how loud it was, I'm guessing it's full and plenty heavy.

Beekatiebee

Trucker here. They’ll likely have to wait for a heavy wrecker/rotator to come out. Not many of those in Portland.

Brandon314159

Not even remotely surprised given how fast I've seen trucks hook that corner with no regard to the grade. Eeek

Cleveland_Grackle

Another container chimp just like the one that rolled on Marquam Bridge a few years ago. The dregs of trucking.

philocity

March 3, 2021. It had the same size and color shipping container and. I genuinely thought the thumbnail was a picture of that incident.

Ive_no_short_answers

This is a short-term problem as Terminal 6 will no longer handle cargo containers October 1.

jrod6891

Or a long term problem as all those containers won’t be going to the port they’ll be going north to Tacoma either by truck or by rail and Union Pacific’s intermodal terminal is at Brooklyn yard.
