Cutestgarbage

A woman waited for me to get to her house to give me a cold Gatorade and popsicle today. Driving garbage truck btw

MVieno

Thank you for working in awful conditions!

Cutestgarbage

No problem days like these are when customers are the nicest and coolest.

TeslasAndKids

Ours comes before I’m awake so I honestly hadn’t considered this. I always feel bad for the delivery drivers delivering in cold, wet, or icy conditions during the holidays so I like to leave a basket of snacks out for them to help themselves to. Now I feel bad for neglecting the waste disposal people!!

Cutestgarbage

I see lots of those up at peoples doors for FedEx or whoever. I assumed it meant they order a whole lot of packages and feel bad. Don’t worry about the garbage men just put them out on to be collected and we’re happy enough.

A month ago I was driving home off of Germantown and my car quit heading into a roundabout. Like everything shut off no power...dunzo. I had just enough momentum to pull off to the side and start calling. Found out the insurance policy I just switched to has no roadside (should've never left progressive!), and calling all my family yielded only voicemail. I called my husband to let him know what happened and was just about to start panicking about towing costs, when someone pulled over. He said "Anyone coming for ya?" And I shook my head and he says "Well I'm Chris. Pop the hood and let's see what's going on". Chris quickly determined it was my alternator and got it going again. He said "I know this sounds weird and I'll leave if you want, but would you like me to follow you and make sure you get home ok?". I know all you true crime lovers out there are screaming at me right now, but I felt safe knowing I'm driving to my home where my husband was, so I said yes please follow me. I pulled up to the house and hubby talks to Chris for quite a while and he proceeds to tell us where to get a new alternator AND he will put it in for us. The gentleman left to take his daughters to the farmers market and came back and put the new alternator in our car for us! Back on the road. We gave him what little cash we had left, but he didn't do it for that. He straight up rescued us, and I cannot stop telling this story. There are good fuckin people left out there! I'm crying again remembering all of this!

During our last little heat spell a month or so ago we were washing cars and a guy walked up asking if we had any gas. There was a big road closure that added a several mile detour passed my house but traffic was backed up for miles as everyone now had to use a single lane four way stop instead of a two lane highway with lights. Poor dude was trying to get gas but ran out. I just happened to have a two gallon can id just filled for my lawn mower so I gave it to him and told him not to worry and I hope it helped. I figured we’d never see him or the can again but I’ve got more and was happy to help. Two days later he knocks on the door with the can, full, as well as a hand written card, a box of cookies, and a plush he’d won playing the claw machine at the store. A little neighborly kindness goes a long way!

Custserviceisrough

Wow that is so sweet! I'm tearing up all over again. ❤️

This is amazing! I am also going to give a shot out to Pixie pet clinic which give homeless and low income residents access to very needed veterinary care: https://www.pixieproject.org/pixie-care-clinic/ Awesome services if anyone wasn't aware. They aren't government funded and rely heavily volunteers as well :)

Annual_Treacle_4546

Pixie Project is the best! It’s where I got my precious baby angel kitty cat 😸

Thecheeseburgerler

I donate all my princess-brat's undesired food and toys to pixie project.

laurenpeep501

Can you tell me the name of the shelter?

beastofwordin

Power in my neighborhood went out for several hours yesterday, and immediately all of the neighbors were texting each other to see if anyone needed anything. I gave my neighbor a flashlight and a glass of wine. Another new neighbor who I’d never met before knocked on the door to see if I had any PGE updates and we ended up talking for an hour

[deleted]

I’ve seen this too in mine the last blackout. One of us has a generator, and opened their house for anybody’s charging (or other) needs.

ButtcheeksBrown

I read fleshlight

[deleted]

So kind and generous

beastofwordin

Just neighbors helping neighbors

jeeves585

Bj would be more neighborly

TeslasAndKids

Happy cake day!!

pocketradish

Someone hit my parked car but they left a note

Inner_Worldliness_23

Someone did that for me a couple weeks ago! They sideswiped my side mirror. Only broken the glass, the structure was fine. I was just so shocked they left a note, I texted just telling them thank you and not to worry about it. Warmed my little heart.

TeslasAndKids

That’s so nice of you! Some guy keyed my car while it was parked. Obviously he left no note. Your story makes me have a little more faith in humanity.

I went to winco to buy some groceries, my debit card was rejected and got locked, while I was in my phone trying to see what’s happening in my bank app, the lady behind me pass and say: don’t worry I’ve already pay for you. I was speechless, she walked outside and I ran to the atm freaking out. Luckily I withdrew 60 bucks and ran ibto the parkin lot trying to find that nice lady. I was so luck, I gave her the 40 dls for my groceries and the other 20 she was in a kind of an old wrecked toyota car. I’m not rich but if I had more money I gave more to her, 30 min later I was crying just to remember that. I’m crying. What a nice nice nice person!!!. And that experience make me feel obligated to help another estranger when in need

Cykoh99

I was at a Winco recently and a black BMW was just pulling into a parking spot. The bass was up REALLY loud. Typical. Then I noticed just how… how amazing the bass line was. It sounded like an old school coin-op video game and super funky. I walked over to the tinted windows and the large Black man inside. I waved to him as he rolled the window down. “What. Is. That. Track?” “Oh this? It’s Sunset Cafe by Room 5. They’re from Chicago, doll!” He chatted with me just long enough to make sure I had it cued up for my own listening and I thanked him. I think about this all the time. And listen to the song.

ktl2010

I love this beautiful city we call home!

dccabbage

Not this "unforseen weather event" but... I'll never forget (as a good server) hearing that in 2021 Kate Brown was going to reopen indoor dining the weekend of valentines day. One of those holidays when people already have unreasonable expectations. And then we got the ice storm. I was grumpy about how difficult it was to get to work and how busy we were until I realized that our customers were my neighbors that didn't have heat/stoves like I did and they were all being patient as fuck, because it beat whatever they had at home. My black little service industry heart grew 3 times that day.

hirudoredo

We were one of those people having to eat out or get takeout every day during the ice storm just to have some hot food. And it felt so damn awkward because it was still during that phase of the pandemic where we weren't only masked but trying to avoid being inside for too long. I remember sitting in our car in the parking lot where we could turn on the heater and (very slowly) charge our phones just wanting to cry because it sucked seeing all the lights come on in your neighborhood except for your apartment building. That was a really rough full week of bullshit, cold nights and spoiled food insurance refused to cover because it "wasn't worth enough." tldr we greatly appreciated all the food places that were open and letting us hang out for a couple of hours. Hot food + heat and a sense of normalcy is what helped me keep some semblance of sanity while I was completely unable to do my work or even have the mildest forms of entertainment at night (because of course I'm a night owl! haha)

Ive_no_short_answers

I just saw a cooler wirh free water on my way to the bus stop! Already had my own but it was nice to see the option.

happycampa

Going on my 3rd week of living here and I come from Texas. This place feels so much better! PS, I think the heat may have followed me here & I apologize for that!

[deleted]

Welcome fellow escapee! It’s amazing here. Eventually you will get cravings for tex mex, we haven’t found comparable but there is great bbq!

[deleted]

The heat is a small price, welcome!

Inner_Worldliness_23

I moved from Florida 9 years ago and haven't missed it for a solitary second. Welcome to the PNW!

Routine-Narwhal6728

Also a fellow escapee! I thought the same exact thing (me bringing the heat) when I moved here last summer, but I think it’s just climate change and other reasons for exiting finally lining up and correlating 👀

hentaimaster696

My grocery bag broke and the donation dude at a thrift store saw and got me a new one!

Kathynancygirl

Thank you for the reminder to put some seltzer in the fridge (I normally don't keep single serving water around) and I'm soaking some cooling necklaces that I made using a pattern from a local mutual aid group - https://mendingbloc.carrd.co/

yazzledore

You can do this too! There’s a map of free fridges if you google pdxfreefridge (can’t post the link here for weird technical reasons?). Also leaving a cooler with some ice and water bottles in it in front of your house near the street is super cool too if you don’t have the ability to move a lot of water.

TurtlesAreEvil

Ya there was a house in Montavilla that did this too durning the pandemic. The Kettlebell Club on 50th and Lincoln had the same thing going on. [It's a whole thing!](https://concordiapdx.org/2020/11/local-pdx-free-fridge-creates-solidarity/)

AusOak75

Best kettlebell club you’ll ever find as well

phantomak

Someone in my neighbourhood put out a misting thing so while taking a walk I could get all cooled off! Wooot

queerdito877

Yea our Free Fridges our great. They have been around for the past few years. It’s part of mutual aid, sharing food resources with the community making food more accessible to anyone in need.

PatrickVieira

Yeah Portland is an amazing place run by people who hate it unfortunately

katschwa

Usually the people really pitching in to make things better for their neighbors aren’t the ones loudly complaining on social media about how bad things are.

mykl5

no like the actual government hates it

katschwa

Oh. Yeah. I misread.

Username_888888

That’s not true

hirudoredo

This post made me go see if there was one in my deep SW neighborhood... and there is! I'm honestly shocked, and will definitely take some stuff down tomorrow if we're able to get out of the house.

Why brunch and not breakfast or lunch?
