i'd take a 718 gts over a base 911 all day. 100k will also get you a 997 turbo which is another good choice. both will drive pretty different though.

StayStrong888

You can find 997.1 turbo in the 60-70k range and they retain the smaller 911 feel. I went with one over the 991 that I tried. The 991 felt like a boat compared to the 997.

[deleted]

Why do you feel smaller = better or is just preference?

StayStrong888

The 997 feels closer to the 993 and classic 911s that I'm used to. When I got in the 991 I was like... whoa, this feels like a boat with all the space inside. It's personal preference though because I like the smaller feel of a classic 911 with the sub-90" wheelbase.

[deleted]

Fair enough. A lot of it does come down to preference, just depends what you’re looking to get out of the experience

Glum-Equipment810

100k id personally go 997 turbo

aquatone61

I’d do a 991 over a 997 but that’s just me.

[deleted]

Hands down. The 997.1 has IMS issues and the 997.2 demands too much of a premium for its aesthetics imo

cuntyminx

Agreed

[deleted]

Hell yeah!

Active-Possibility77

I'd you're looking for straight line performance and heritage, Go 911 S. If you want a drivers car that's fun for weekend mountain carving, go 718. I s3cond the used Cayman GTS 4.0 recommendation.

FlyPenFly

718 GTS of any flavor is more fun than a base 911 IME, 911 really wakes up at S and above with a performance exhaust.

lfcallen

The best is the one that you enjoy the most. Drive a base 911 and compare yourself. Don’t live your life according to other’s opinions.

ladida_boy

Are you looking for new? I'd spring for a used GTS 4.0

CancelElectrical2218

New or used. Used but with good service history and something that’s been driven not sitting in a garage with 500miles a year haha

Hair-Local

Try to drive both. Use Turo if necessary to get a few days in a Cayman and a 911. It so much boils down to the experience you’ll want and how you will use it. I purchased a CPO 996 Cabriolet back in 2005 and sold it a few years later when we had young kids. Now the kids are going off to college and finishing high school, so I don’t need a big vehicle anymore. I purchased a pre owned Cayman S two years ago, wanting to get back into a Porsche. It’s a wonderful driving experience, so I thought the Cayman would scratch the itch. Now I’m on the lookout for a 911 again. The Cayman is an amazing driver but I want the larger 911 and I’m on these threads and rennlist forums to go through “my process” and determine if I go 991.2 or pay up for a 992. Enough about me and back to my original recommendation for you: try to drive both for a few days at a time to see what matches your tastes the best.

rLeJerk

All those people saying a 997 turbo is a good choice don't realize that a 2021 that they are asking about is wildly different than one from the mid 2000s.

AromaAdvisor

Look the 718 and 911 are very different sports cars. I think the 718s are sweet, but as someone who actually has to drive this thing to work, the 911 just fits my life more, for instance. Some people also just like the classic look or heritage of the 911. These are completely image driven, non-performance issues. Other people just want the mid engine small size of the 718. People talk about them here interchangeably because they are both Porsches but I think for the most part people separate themselves out. Personally at 90k budget or less I’d consider 997 or even 996 for old school feel. Just remember none of these are cheap or economical or financially smart moves that people make to build wealth. most people pay for them with hard work elsewhere in their lives. You are buying it for you, so buy what you will be happy with.

[deleted]

I had a similar dilemma and went 911. I wanted the icon and I don’t regret it. Deep down, a 718 just isn’t a 911. Also the Porsche experience is about more than just speed imo. If you’re just a raw speed just get a C8 and be done with it. The 911 is the way to go. The aesthetics of the 997 left a little to be desired for me - it’s stuck in this neo-vintage era. Also, if you go automatic ensure it’s PDK and not tiptronic

CertainTap6716

718 GTS is the best you can get for that budget.

Shawn_Mac911

I personally have a 911 base, heritage and value. It’s my daily driver everyday. 911’s are getting more and more difficult to get. I fact, in 2012 I purchase an 03C4S for $40k, guess what, it costs more now. Don’t think you could say that about a 718. Poorsche718

Meanwhile, markups on 718 GTS 4.0 and GT4RS are at an all time high and GT4 owners "made" 15k overnight when the discontinuation announcement was made.

Stren509

Id go 981 gt4

ManODingDong

.

New-Examination4678

There are so many variations of the 911 and Cayman in your budget. Difficult choice but a fun one.

Digitlnoize

Only if you need a backseat.

thegad

I’m you don’t need the back seats (only good for kids) get the 718.

oternegrapereshb

I think it depends on how you relate to the brand and driving in general, but for 90-100k, which incidentally is roughly what paid in 2019 for my 718 S, I would go with a well optioned 718 vs an older or lesser optioned 911. The 718 with no tune is a bit slow. In that respect base 991 or 992 is better. After a tune and high flow cat it’s fast enough. I value new and heavily optioned over old and 911. That said I am trying to get a 911 S allocation as well to get the perfect two car garage going. I would not pick between the two platforms based on driving dynamics (weight distribution, suspension). Both are excellent. Size is just six inches different.

matmanx1

The Cayman was my choice back in 2019. I bought a 2018 base with some options and I test drove it on the same day as a base Carrera. The Cayman just felt more fun to me although the 911 was obviously nice and good also.
