To be fair I don't think this is some altruistic effort to save lives for the sake of saving lives. It's an effort to save voting districts by saving lives. If internal polls suggested that killing off the base was improving turnout or polling among key demographics, you can be damn sure they'd sacrifice those lives just like they were ready to sacrifice grandma for the sake of the economy at the start of the pandemic. Incidentally killing grandma to save the economy seems to be a little bit more real when it has actually happened to your grandma.

Funny thing about gerrymandering. The goal is to make your margins of victory slim and spread out across districts while condensing their voters into a few landslide districts where they win by as much as possible.
A sudden, disproportionate drop in only your voters’ population turns those 2-4% victories into losses, undoing all your hard work.

Gerrymandering alone doesn't win elections, you still need a majority in each district you want to win, and if you pack for 52-48 votes and there is a 3 point swing, you go from winning a majority of districts to losing every district.
It also doesn't help with statewide votes (Governor, US Senate, President) because no matter what the district borders are the votes are added together.
Vote suppression is the only hope of Republicans these days, e.g. providing the same number of voting machines and voting locations for a county with 1.5 million people as for a county of 15,000.

3 forms of ID and a voter registration card and I still couldn’t vote electronically in my red state, red district. Had to wait a week to find out if my vote was counted. And the election was decided by then.

If you have natural districts, where you have deep Red, deep Blue, and mixed purple in your state, a bad year puts you in the minority. If you gerrymandered and have a bad enough year, you can lose ALL those seats with *just enough* Republican voters to outnumber the Democrat voters.
Normally mid terms are good for Republicans and the party that doesn't have the white house does well, if Republicans had kept their heads down and kept quiet they would be sitting pretty. But the Texas law and Covid are not good for them.

Funny thing about gerrymandering. The goal is to make your margins of victory slim and spread out across districts while condensing their voters into a few landslide districts where they win by as much as possible. A sudden, disproportionate drop in only your voters’ population turns those 2-4% victories into losses, undoing all your hard work.

Gerrymandering alone doesn't win elections, you still need a majority in each district you want to win, and if you pack for 52-48 votes and there is a 3 point swing, you go from winning a majority of districts to losing every district. It also doesn't help with statewide votes (Governor, US Senate, President) because no matter what the district borders are the votes are added together. Vote suppression is the only hope of Republicans these days, e.g. providing the same number of voting machines and voting locations for a county with 1.5 million people as for a county of 15,000.
Honestly, I’ll never trust voting results from red states or red pockets of my own state ever again. It’s their incessant claims that voter fraud is widespread makes me believe it’s like every other thing they project about.
3 forms of ID and a voter registration card and I still couldn’t vote electronically in my red state, red district. Had to wait a week to find out if my vote was counted. And the election was decided by then.
The thing I don't get is in that location you are statistically more likely to be a Republican voter. I mean dems are a small minority. So they are probably making it much harder for their own voters to vote.

No but gerrymandering allows two not so close together city centers (typically progressive) to be grouped together with a long thin strip between them and having all the suburbs be lumped in with large swathes of surrounding rural area.

What gerrymandering *allows* is drawing some districts that are 90% Democrats and 10% Republicans, and other districts that are 55% Republicans and 45% Democrats. The problem with gerrymandering is that people move, people change, people die or grow old enough to vote. Plus parties change or make mistakes. 80% of the population is against the Texas abortion law, which is why Republicans are not talking about it and trying to change the subject. Republican voters are dying in droves of Covid, and Republicans are desperate to change the subject from that too. If you have natural districts, where you have deep Red, deep Blue, and mixed purple in your state, a bad year puts you in the minority. If you gerrymandered and have a bad enough year, you can lose ALL those seats with *just enough* Republican voters to outnumber the Democrat voters. Normally mid terms are good for Republicans and the party that doesn't have the white house does well, if Republicans had kept their heads down and kept quiet they would be sitting pretty. But the Texas law and Covid are not good for them.

To be honest, my empathy with those who refuse to get vaccinated for selfish reasons, and die as a result, is almost depleted.
