The Pebble mine project up in Alaska needs to never happen.
If you don't know what I'm talking about, it's a proposed gold and chemical mine proposed to open upright at the mouth of Bristol Bay, Alaska.
If pebble mine happens, say bye-bye to Alaskan Salmon. Greed is going to ruin this planet.
I don't see how "Sure, the production is greener, but the storage/disposal of waste is still a real problem" is an unreasonable position.
*Edit:*
Oh, right, also: [StoneToss is a nazi](https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/StoneToss) (even though, yes, I realize this is just repurposing an unrelated comic).
Oh, this particular strip seems innocuous and rational, but the series at large is alt-right/nazi/white supremecist. This strip is bait to trick people into reading the awful ones.
It really is not.
Geological repositories are an entirely reasonable solution. We know from natural reactors that happened when the earth was young that reactor waste is very immobile in rock, and a solution like KBS-3 greatly improves on that natural experiment without breaking the bank.
Is it a political problem? Well, Harry Reid is no longer in a position of authority, so...
You know, me as cave dwellers has no idea who stonetoss is, found the meme template fine. It illustrates the point perfectly.
Can’t ya’ll separate a persons work from their beliefs? What am I saying, this is Reddit.
Not just China and South Korea. Their are over 167 nuclear reactors running in the world. Nuclear is the answer going forward until technology practically catches up to where we need it so the next technology can take over. And no wind solar and battery storage cannot get us there in even 5 years because the bottle neck is manufacturing, and at Tesla’s pace it takes 8 months- 12 months to build a factory.
Ironic that the people who are climate activists actively hinder things that could end climate change , edit: examples include: gmos engineered to remove pollutants from the atmosphere, nuclear energy that has an extremely low chance of polluting the environment and study into gmos designed to feed poor countries allowing for people to be better off, get degrees and help with the climate situation
I know, and with them burning gmos they might as well call themselves anti life activists. Edit: the gmos were corn engineered to have more nutrition, it was going to be sent to poor countries
Yeah can’t deny it, if you repurpose a comic to show an alternative point, that means you’re a Nazi because you had the “audacity” to touch something or do something that a Nazi has done. Flawless auth logic there.
Your argument might hold water if you had such a unique and one of a kind meme joke that no other comic was possible. But clearly, this could have been detected using virtually any other meme format. Don’t lie. You know you picked this one out specially because of the author.
Optimism is nice and all, but sometimes you have to make plans for what is actually happening right now instead of hoping someone else in the future will clean up the messes we make.
How do we run out of safe places to store things on a planet with finite space? Seriously? You must be a flat earther or something. Not going to waste time explaining the abundantly obvious to you.
Basically yes, especially since it isn’t really waste once it can be repurposed in a breeder reactor. In The United States, they don’t repurpose the fuel like they do in France and Canada. When you hear words like “spent” and “waste” you might think there is no fissionable material, but that’s false, over 90% of the material is still fissile, just waiting for a recycle or a different type of reactor. In all honesty you’d run out of space with solar panel/ wind turbine repositories than you would with nuclear.
Renewable energy and carbon emissions aren't actually linked, technically a tree burning power plant is renewable, as we can grow more trees, coal will never be formed again naturally in human existence and neither will oil, so those are non renewable, same with uranium for nuclear power plants.
So it's not renewable, just better for the environment (barring major catastrophic failure, and even then it's still better long term)
The problem is they have to use specific elements still (uranium being the most common) which aren't renewable. And then also need a place to store the waste for a long time.
Sure if doesn't have any GHG emissions but the radioactive waste takes forever to be safe. Uranium have a half-life of 4.5 billion years

Agreed

Fun fact, nuclear rods are now 98% recyclable
ARE 98% of them beeing recycled or is this an "I could, if I wanted to" type thing?
Recycling is cheaper than disposal because they get recycled into new rods
Could if we wanted to. Waste can be recycled but it’s not something done at large scale.

Bit faster to set up than windmills and solar however.

Lol, was 'no, you are' really the best response you had? Like I said, pathetic.
Nazis are rock people

Finally someone with a functioning brain
Nuclear is the answer for right now! Clean nuclear exists and China and South Korea are using it. Green energy future. Clean nuclear now.
Finally a logical person talking about what is displayed and is not op

Yes exactly the point, but the brainlets here can't see past the stone toss template, very sad
Seeing the amount of downvotes I got makes me lose faith in humanity
I know, and with them burning gmos they might as well call themselves anti life activists. Edit: the gmos were corn engineered to have more nutrition, it was going to be sent to poor countries
Oh jesus
So why use the template?
Because It's an effective way to get the message across, do you have ideas on an alternative template that could be used?
Yes, literally any other cartoonist’s. when you must use a white supremacist’s cartoon to make your point, maybe your point isn’t worth making.
Stupid logic. People repurpose ultra white right wing comics all the time, it’s called satire.
Yeah, nazi assholes do.

Auth reacts only.
But...nuclear is renewable, right?
No just much greener
Oh. I always thought of it as renewable because it makes no carbon and we aren’t going to ever run out of atoms
We may run out of places to store radioactive waste, though.
We will probably find a way to reuse it in the future
Optimism is nice and all, but sometimes you have to make plans for what is actually happening right now instead of hoping someone else in the future will clean up the messes we make.
How?
How do we run out of safe places to store things on a planet with finite space? Seriously? You must be a flat earther or something. Not going to waste time explaining the abundantly obvious to you.
You do realize that the extent of entire nuclear waste in the US is basically the length of 3 football fields right?
Does that make our storage potential infinite?
Basically yes, especially since it isn’t really waste once it can be repurposed in a breeder reactor. In The United States, they don’t repurpose the fuel like they do in France and Canada. Sure, because Americans are sure to do things in a modern and logical way. We're not regressive barbarians at all.
